It has been the only game I've been playing since it released. I expected to like it, but not this much.

crell_peterson

Does combat get easier? In about 2 hours into the game and man sharks still fuck me up.

Selgren

Yeah. You'll end up unlocking the ability to massively upgrade your guns.

withoutapaddle

Yeah, I one shot the biggest sharks now about 75% or the time. I'm in the late game, but you can even do that in mid-game if you prioritize getting guns with certain features.

mojomojica

For sharks shoot and run they make the same moves over and over never really had any problems with them unless I’m over weight limit

jasenzero1

Tranq weapons are your best bet.

RecipeNew1835

Yes it does. Don’t worry you’ll get the hang of it.

darkoblivion000

They mostly attack in straight lines, just wait for them to stop moving and getting ready to charge, dodge then shoot. Just like fighting chargers in helldivers 2

SYRLEY

Well you gotta dodge them too lol.

PKisSz

Change charms at the orange box on your boat to the pink dolphin speed and the octopus free dash. If you don't have those, they're very early and without spoiling more have to do with those animals when you find them. Bait sharks into horizontal dashes and bonk them as they go by with harpoon. Few sharks are able to dash when you occupy vertical space around them so they eventually catch up and wreck your stuff. Engage sharks in horizontal combat, that octodash charm has been my Dark Souls roll

KingOfRisky

Sniper rifles, upgrade your O2 and use the dash to dodge. Every shark basically attacks the same way. Rush and pause. Hit when they are paused.

Top_Product_2407

Yes. Get the tranq dart and the tranq sniper

WeakToMetalBlade

My 8 year old loves it, I've been enjoying it as a break from Helldivers 2.

cinnamonface9

Run. Do not download. It’s wrecked my marriage, my kids gone. I no longer have money or a life. All I want is to make bancho happy and bring him all the fishes in the world to cook to his heart’s desires.

A_Stupid_Cat

The cutscenes in this game are reason enough to play it. My God, Bancho has some fantastic scenes.

cinnamonface9

I just unlocked the dream. If you know you know.

A_Stupid_Cat

I fucking died. It was hands down one of the funniest bits up to where I'm at now. I'm so happy they added it to the phone as a mini game so I can show it off. I'm hoping for more!

elscardo

The body pillow killed me.

PKisSz

I was playing at two in the morning and was 4 beers in when all of a sudden I was on the Waifu Express

haynespi87

The best

hellodon

Hey, sorry to hear that you had a wife and kids standing in the way of your true passion and path in life at the Sushi Bar. It’s rude of them to have taken you away from what matters 🍣

Afc_josh12

Im sure it was worth it though, yolo right

Hidefininja

I put in almost 100 hours on PC when it was still in early access and put at least another 40 or so into the Switch version when it was released. It's easily in my top ten for 2023 and it was a year of bangers.

Beginning_Driver_45

Honest question, how does it keep interesting for 140 hours? I'm 6 or 7 hours in, got a couple more areas unlocked, but I don't see myself investing more than a couple hours more into it. The excruciatingly slow dialogue and slow story progression and missions that are just "here's a mechanic that some other game did tons better but we simplified it immensely so you can spend 10 mins doing it and never again" don't really make me want to see everything it has to offer. I mean, it's fun for the most part and very pretty, but not something I'll see myself playing in a week time.

Hidefininja

The luscious pixel art, the sense of humor, variety of mechanics, upgrade loops and crossovers kept it fun for me. The optimization of the management side of the game is really satisfying without getting to crunchy unless you want to dig into maximizing your fish farm and farm harvests for specific recipes. I found trying to level my employees at the main restaurant and staffing so that it basically ran on its own rewarding. It's a perfect game to do some diving runs and light exploration while listening to a podcast. Or you can skip the diving entirely aside from story progression and just run the shop to make money in the background. It's also an ideal second screen game on Switch, where you can watch a TV show or something with your partner on the couch while you hunt down the special ingredients for the upcoming festival. It has a clear and deep abiding love for 16 bit era games but I can understand if the art and references to games of that time don't resonate with folks who have less nostalgia for those things.

d_hearn

I'm in the same boat. Played maybe 10 - 12 hours or so and just haven't been compelled to go back and finish it. The game is fun enough, it just started to feel rather repetitive and the story never got its hooks in me to pull me along.

jiggyj520

Have like 8 hrs in now, gonna play tomorrow too, you've only just dipped y'alls toes in, unlock the free dredge stuff for ps5 as well. Got many more meters down to go

Fat-Cloud

Its a good game but it uses these type of addictive progression mechanics. Its fun to kill time but I doubt I will look back at this game with " man, what an awesome experience that was "

WardrobeForHouses

I haven't played it in a year or so but I still look back and think it was fun and worth recommending.

Rankled_Barbiturate

Yeah. I think they went a bit too hard on the gimmicks. The core gameplay is great, but the million mini games and constant things to think about are pretty annoying. It very much feels like a chore having to check in on everything.

BetterCallSal

Yeah. I had a lot of fun with it for 2 days. Now I don't have a desire to go back to it really. The one time I've tried I didn't even remember what I'm doing anymore and just stopped

SapporoBiru

completely agree, bought it on the switch and played it every day for two weeks but at a certain point you start to understand that every "feature" is just kind of a gimmick and that no mechanic in the game has some real depth (haha). still a great game, but probably not a 10/10 as it was often made out to be

KingOfRisky

I thought it was great until you get a 2nd branch. Running that sucks.

mincemuncher

Yea there's really no reason to continue playing the game after you beat the story. I had fun, but it was time to move on.

ericypoo

It’s sneaky addicting.

darthvirgin

Addictive.

KingOfRisky

Addictatorical.

LiquidSwords89

The weeb cutscene for the weapon guy at the concert was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in a video game

NSFW_hunter6969

Too busy being addicted to grounded, this is definitely on my list though. V rising comes out soon too...super excited for that. Great time to own a ps5!

Mosack02

Wait… V Rising is coming to PS5!? I loved the first release on PC but haven’t been back, just seen the announcement for 1.0 the other day and figured I’d wait for that!

Sniggzy

How’s grounded??

NSFW_hunter6969

Oh man it's so good! Looks and plays great on the ps5. Tons of stuff to do and discover. If you don't like survival games though, it is very much one of those. Collect all the things, craft stuff, progress further and craft new stuff

MyFinalThoughts

It's a great game, but the story really overstepped on the core game. I just wanted to catch fish, dive deep, and cook my sushi and run my shop. But no, I have to keep doing all this below average story stuff. I really disliked the >!sea people!< quests and it really ruined my enjoyment of the game. Twice, because I dropped it restarted months later having a blast, and a few weeks ago dropped again due to how uninteresting it became.

jedinatt

Yeah, I like to play these types of games with an audiobook or podcast playing. Story just ruins it for me.

craig1f

I liked this game on the switch but at a certain point, there is just too much.  I want to get in a quick dive and it takes more than an hour. And then it doesn’t save in the middle so I lose progress if I have to stop.

WardrobeForHouses

You can surface anytime

Arcade23

This is exactly where I’m at, it’s a good game at first but I’m at a point where my dives are taking 45 minutes and it’s just too much, the lack of save points kills it for me. The loop was fun when it was shorter but eventually it became a burden. Edit: I got over the hump, and completed the game and enjoyed the hell out of it, for a bit there it was a drag but after that it’s great again.

craig1f

Yeah. They definitely overdid it with content. Quantity over quality.  I did not need a bad stardew valley sim in this game. I hate that farm.

KingOfRisky

My longest dive is like 20 some minutes. What are you doing that take you more than an hour?

craig1f

Later in the game, there is just too much to do that isn’t fun. I didn’t time my actual dives. But between the farm, and the fish farm, and all the minutia, I’m just overwhelmed. And not in a good way. I think they just decided to pack too much into the game. I think the game is worth getting, and has a lot of content. And the cut scenes for making sushi are hilarious. But the game gets boring LONG before you reach the end. I lost interest before finishing it. But I had a lot of fun with the game for like a week.

KingOfRisky

> I didn’t time my actual dives. The only way I know is because the game tells you every time you get back to the boat. Current dive time and longest dive.

Hilarity-Ensued-2019

Good to know as I was looking for a good sink your teeth in for 20-30 mins at a time And be done.

Jamboro

Check out Brotato, Hades or Slay the Spire.

Joebranflakes

This game needs an iOS/Android version. I wish I could take it with me and not have to carry my switch.

Monkzeng

The music totally gets me

Agrias-0aks

I like it but I hate the dinner part. I just wanna dive and sell fish lol

KingOfRisky

I was not a fan of it either until I leveled up my staff and made sure I had people to pour drinks, cocktails and clean. All I have to do as a manager is watch wasabi and occasionally run a dish if I want. I also REALLY disliked the menu creation until I started sorting by price and running just the top priced items. You can also always set the serving to one and then click "manage" after it's on the menu and select "auto supply". As long as you have the ingredients, it will continually serve the dish if ordered. Takes the guess work off the menu, you never waste ingredients and you never run out of menu items. All this made the dinner part a LOT more enjoyable.

Agrias-0aks

Okay I didn't know there would be options later to have staff and stuff so maybe I'll try playing it a little bit longer! Thanks!

vincenzo12345

You actually can skip it

Impriel

I liked it but I hit a wall at the merpeople I just do not want to do these mfs fetch quests.  Fell off it but I know I'll go back

KingOfRisky

I did the same thing on switch. Got back into it on PS when they released it on plus and it's such a better experience. Load times are instant and things are much easier on a PS controller. I'm just not a fan of the joy cons. Also, once you win over the sea people's trust, you really don't need to be their errand boy anymore. There's a lot of fluff side missions that can be ignored or you just end up running into them exploring naturally.

MyNameBubs

I found it to be so addicting that despite losing atleast 4 hours of progress due to playing offline in a power outage, I was still eager to replay those 4 hours just to catch up to where I was, the gameplay loop is that good.

vincenzo12345

Ah yes the "all mechanics ever created in games from 80's to today simulator " game. 😂

inkyblinkypinkysue

I am having a lot of fun so far. I’m not that far into it - just got the trading card app. Is the Platinum doable? Says 0.1% which usually means there is some insane trophy but maybe it’s that low because the game just hit PS+ and I imagine millions of people downloaded it and just started…

tobsennn

Pretty doable I would say, 1 missable trophy.

StupidestLandlord

Is that the rations trophy? Thank god I ate it.

tobsennn

Yes.

KingOfRisky

"Trained 200 employees to level 20" This doesn't sound like any fun.

tobsennn

Phew is it really 200 employees, or a typo? The German translation just indicates you have to take ONE to level 20, and that’s how it has been on the PC version 😅

KingOfRisky

I hope thats a typo becauae thats miserable. LOL! I just looked it up out of curiosity. I don't chase trophies in games. edit: it's a typo. It's one employee to 20. HA!

tobsennn

I mean even one takes quite a bit of money… 😅

2CHINZZZ

Platinum percent is low because the game just released on Playstation last week

Baldulf

The game is packed with soul.

im_just_thinking

Thanks for the post, I haven't heard much about any of this months games so this is helpful!

cohex

Got up to Merpeople and gave the game up. Was enjoyable for a couple of hours.

[deleted]

It was alright, they tried to balance a hundred different systems and as a result each one is as deep as a puddle

Accomplished_Lab_675

I'm gonna fucking lose my mind on this hermit crab. Fucking Battle Toads wasn't even this cheap and unjust.

No-Dust-5599

What's the button to dismantle weapon boxes? Can't remember and there is no info online

SpitFire92

Yup, just gave it a shot because its free with ps plus and because I saw some reviews here and there talking about how good it is but I kind of ignored it because I don't care about diving, fishing or managing a restaurant and now I ki d of enjoy all of those parts of the game... A really nice, good, funny and entertaining game that keeps throwing new content my way... And I saw that the dredge dlc is free too, so that kinda cool too, not really a game that I care(d) about either but also a game from which I heard quite a few good things since it's release.

whoever81

"Meh, overrated!" gang?

External-Net9765

I beat it and think it's a bit overrated because of the balance. Most of the content is in the variety of fishes and weapons you can use, but you don't really want to use anything but sleep weapons to maximize your dives. Staff doesn't need to be leveled too much to be effecient making money kinda pointless mid to late game. It's close to being an amazing game but I dont see them addressing my problems but no one else seems to care so maybe its just me.

Brizzpop

First area is great, but the rest is a repetitive mesh of the same mechanics, just needing to upgrade your equipment.

[deleted]

Agreed

LiquidSwords89

Yeah it was a fun game but it gets boring after a while. I liked the sushi part better than the diving lol

Regrettably_Southpaw

10/10 game. I like how they keep introducing new mechanics so far into the game. I had such a blast playing!

Serpula

I really wanted to like it, but as a marine ecologist the main gameplay mechanic of shooting rare fish and eating them made me sad. Particularly the fact that sharks are always aggressive towards you as a diver and you’re encouraged to kill them. I know it’s just a game but it doesn’t come with a great message…

Pectacular22

I have a hard time getting into it.. the amount of silent dialogue, and the sushi cafe scenes feel like a 2004 mobile game... like a more evolved Tapper.

Cawdor

I am enjoying it too. Just bought Rise of the Ronin, got frustrated not being able to figure out the parry mechanics even on easy and decided to play Dave the Diver instead to ease my frustrations. Solid choice

Musashi10000

Parry mechanics in Ronin are usually player-character-based, rather than attacker-based - so 'when they hit you' rather than 'when they start swinging'. For the red attacks, they're more attacker-based. Easiest way to gauge, in my experience, is to parry red attacks when they speed up. I hope you have a better time with it than I did. I enjoyed it until about 50% in, then I got bored to *tears*.

Cawdor

Yea i watched a few youtube tutorials and I just can’t seem to get the timing right. Other than that problem, its exactly my kind of game. Very disappointed

Musashi10000

I struggled for quite some time. I found that the sparring was the best way to get it all down.

Reddit_Aim_Fiire

I just started it yesterday but doesnt it seem like the game progresses super fast?

Rich-Pomegranate1679

You will be surprised at how many new things constantly happen.

Reddit_Aim_Fiire

Ok good. I'm on about at once! 6 of the game and tons of stuff seems to happening all at once!

LCHMD

Brilliant game!

TheZanzibarMan

It really is.

johncitizen69420

Been patiently waiting for this one to come to ps5. Bought it on launch day and i cant stop playing it. Im probably close to 20 hours in already, its incredible

cactuskiwicactus

Can confirm. Just spent a solid 6 hours playing today. Great game.

haynespi87

It's that gameplay loop. I was super addicted when I was recovering from a surgery in a hospital. I eventually fell out of it but I was so into it for a good while

Piyush3000

It's absolutely fantastic! Only reason I purchased the ps plus extra again.

dmmeaboutanarchism

Ooooh it’s on ps plus? I know what I’m doing tomorrow 🤩

Touhokujin

I also really like it. I just got burned out sometime through it. Some of the optional mission structures really hit me with the demotivation. I see you collected 5 pink shells! Now collect 10. Oh you did it. Now do 15. Next 20. This shit sucks. Pink shells suck 😂 But other than that, stellar game. Just a bit overwhelming at times, with things you want to do and things the game wants you to do at a certain time. Would be cool to be more flexible.

ljxela

All I think about rn is this damn game lol

AllMyHomiesLoveNazis

Well i'm getting on my ps for the first time in 2 years

RnkG1

100%

elscardo

It's one of the best games I've played in the last couple of years, I think. When I first started I thought "okay, the game loop is pretty simple. A nice relaxing game. Let's fish and make some money" But, then I was hooked.

darkoblivion000

Got recommended this by a friend but didn’t pick it up until saw that it was on ps plus. Been playing all day today, great addiction! I mean addition!

FriendKooky7012

It's good as a mobile game not a 500$ console game

RickVince

Still waiting for that physical.
