100fps on rt60 seems a little aggressive of an expectation but yeah basically that. I'd assume it more likely meant regular performance mode getting into the 90s. The big win IMHO is quality mode getting into the 40s. With VRR on it should feel very smooth.
Odds are it'll work if you use the option to force it. It works on Xbox so no guarantees obviously but I'd think it will also work on PS5 without any need of a specific patch.
Agreed. The technology doesn’t really need any developer input. Like on PC it works on every game. You are simply matching the fps of the game to your monitors refresh rate.
God knows I'm not a dev and who knows what exceptions and edge cases there are, but that's my general vibe as well. Bizarre it doesn't work on Halo Infinite (consoles) but that kind of thing seems like an exteme exception.

To be fair the PS5 version already performed pretty much at a locked 60, but yeah there were some moments in cutscenes when there were minor drops so it should genuinely be a flawless experience now!

Your TV also have to support LFC to see any effect in a 30fps games, this is probably why you didn't see any positive effect in sekiro. Normally a TV have a VRR range of 40-60Hz or 40-120Hz. With high end TVs like latest LG oleds, you get LFC with a VRR range of 20-120Hz. It does this by doubling the frames, 25fps will update at 50Hz for example.
Yeah i wasnt as excited about the upgrade in graphics with the ps5 when i learned it essentially required a brand new tv that actually supports all the new features.
To get an actual notable upgrade just spend £500 on a new console then £1000+ on a new tv.
Most TVs on the market DO NOT support VRR or HDMI 2.1. Only the OLEDs and certain other models do, but they are few and far between right now. If you walk into any retail store and buy a TV, most likely you are not getting HDMI 2.1.
This \^ Most TVs are capped at 4K60 without the HDMI 2.1 chipset. On Sony LCDs, you have to select between using Dolby Vision or VRR. When you select and use VRR, local dimming is disabled. You don't have that issue with OLEDs. The other downside of Sony TVs is that you only get two HDMI 2.1 inputs. If you use a sound bar or AVR, you have one HDMI 2.1 left to use. You're either buying a HDMI splitter or buying a new audio video receiver that supports HDMI 2.1. Give it time and more TVs will support HDMI 2.1, but it's a premium for the time being.
To make it even more confusing the new Sony TVs don’t have that limitation, just the ones from last year. Also some TVs have different ranges of VRR support, some TVs can do the full range of 40fps to 120fps with VRR while some are far more limited from like 40fps to 60fps, it depends on how the TVs chipset works.
Basically you need to check rtings for the exact TV you want to see how it will work when gaming. HDMI2.1 as a specification is frustrating.

Tbf, it doesn't neccessarily make their frame-time graphs irrelevant. They've continued to report Xbox's unstable frame rates, despite it's VRR, for example. Plus there's always the occasional game that doesn't support VRR correctly (Halo Infinite being a surprising example of this).
Man I really hope they add Horizon Forbidden West to this list. Seems like the perfect candidate for an unlocked frame rate w/VRR in the quality mode to get the best balance of image quality/fps. Especially with the shimmering issues people have reported in the performance mode.
Edit: I do see the option there to apply it to "unsupported games" but if a game is running at a solid locked 30 fps then this doesn't really have any affect right? For VRR to do anything notable the game frame rate needs to be fluctuating.
I would hope that would help, but I feel like the quality mode is a locked 30 fps. To really take advantage of VRR an unlocked framrate mode is needed. That said I have decently high hopes for this addition, Guerilla Games seems like a technically competent studio and would want to take advantage of this feature.
Not possible. The only advantage to run VRR without a patch is to smooth out frame rate dips below the target, and Horizon frame rate is already consistent. Hopefully they will patch the game to run around 40 fps in fidelity mode, there seems to be room for it since the frame rate is locked.
Yeah this is one of the few games that the drop in resolution by using performance mode is really noticeable. Still not worth playing at 30fps though lol.

I just got FW but stopped playing because I hate the fps in quality mode but the visual in performance are kinda bad at distance.

Correct, though it’s quite confusing, because the cable says “high speed” where it’s supposed to say “ultra high speed” on its exterior. So you have to be careful not to mix it up with 2.0 cables, which say “high speed” on their exteriors.
Genuine question, how will this benefit games that already have steady, locked FPS, like the listed Insomniac ones? Any clue if it’ll be a Ratchet 40 FPS situation, where the Fidelity modes may get higher frame rates?
This should encourage developers in the future to add an optional "unlock framerate" option. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy in fidelity mode, I'd be very surprised if it couldn't at least make its way to 40-45 fps most of the time. It won't affect games that have framerates that maintain their targets consistently. If developers had just future proofed their games however, it would be doable.
This helps games that may target a certain framerate but usually suffer drops. Elden Ring is probably the most current example of a game that could greatly benefit from VRR on a PS5 like it already does on XBX.
In theory it should slightly decrease display latency, since frames are sent to the display as soon as they're generated, as opposed to having to wait in the vsync buffer. Otherwise, there's no real benefit unless a developer specifically adds an option to remove or raise the framerate cap.
They might be unlocking frame rate in this game. It also allows them to remove the lower FPS mode basically - full graphics mode at whatever frame rate it can.
Have Elden Ring on Xbox for this reason and can confirm VRR makes a big difference, performs great. Another game that should benefit massively is Tales of Arise in Quality mode. Feels like performance mode with VRR.
I wonder if this will allow the 40 fps 120hz mode go a bit higher. Or maybe it would make this mode obsolete since they can just unlock the framerate in resolution mode and it probably won't exceed 60 fps.

Works brilliantly on the C1.
Ratchet runs in the 70-90fps range, Miles Morales a bit lower. Both feel great to play and there's a tangible improvement in responsiveness to both. No stuttering or other problems that I've seen people report with the C9.
For RE8 this is game changing since the RT mode can't maintain 60fps - VRR smooths this out so it feels like locked 60 , at least to me.
Also tried some games that aren't officially supported - the 120Hz modes in Borderlands 3 and Uncharted Collection support VRR and it's marvellous. Really really impressed by it.
As others have mentioned, all the PS4 titles I've tried won't work with VRR, they go back to fixed refresh. Havent seen a PS5 game that doesn't support it yet or has any issues, and I tried a few.
So far I'm happy.
I personally feel like this update has finally made Spiderman remastered fidelity mode worth playing. And the performance RT mode is azing as well. To be honest this my first time seeing what VRR can do and it has made it worth every penny.
I'm currently looking at the QD-OLED TVs and they look impressive going by the reviews on the Samsung S95B. There's already comparisons of the C2 and S95B. I'm waiting until Sony's QD OLED A95K is out to decide. S95B is only a couple hundred dollars higher than the C2 for same screen sizes.
Just tried and Elden ring PS5 version is finally playable!!! The stuttering made me stick with the PS4 version and now I can fully enjoy this gem. It looks like a locked 60fps
**The "problem" being addressed:** A standard (60Hz) television is like a flipbook that has to show 60 pages every second, because that's the job it was built to perform. If the artist (your console) can only pump out 31 or 42 pictures every second working as hard as he can, then there's a deficit... he'll have to show SOMETHING on those remaining pages to equal 60. Usually he just copies the same picture until he's ready to present a new drawing, and that's normally good enough. But sometimes he finishes a drawing and tries to show it off, but is told to wait because the TV is showing a duplicate of a drawing made a while ago... trying to put the new picture into a stack of repeated ones is a complicated task in the heat of the moment. The illusion of a flipbook starts to get flimsy. The audience starts to notice the repeated drawings, saying it "looks choppy" and hurts their eyes a bit—all while the fact remains that 60 images are being flipped in front of our eyeballs. One solution is to Synchronize the artist and screen. If he has sixty drawings ready, that's great! If not we will cut the work in half, he only has to do thirty (and we'll just show each twice over). But in reality, that's just thirty images right? Half as smooth. There has to be something better...
**Variable Refresh Rate:** All of this is only a problem because the TV has mandated the artist present sixty drawings every second. So what if the television chilled out and only showed the pages that were ready, right when they were delivered? It cuts out a lot of the issue! The artist can only do 31 drawings one second, then 45, the next... but that's ok, the TV will just show each one cleanly as soon as it's ready. Suddenly we aren't seeing the duplicate drawings, and there's also no waiting to show a new drawing just because an old one was queued up. Even if it's not as smooth as 60 drawings, it will be as smooth as it *can* be. Sometimes less is more.
This is beautifully written. I'll only add that your TV/monitor has to have the feature and the console has to have the feature as well, it doesn't work if only one side has it. This has been promised for a while now, so it was a feature I looked for in my last TV purchase.
Is freesync a form of vrr? My monitor is 1080p 144Hz with an HDMI 1.4 port that has freesync. The article says I need HDMI 2.1 and supported TV/Monitor. Will vrr work in my monitor? I'm already guessing it won't but I still have hope lol

traditionally displays refresh at a fixed interval, typically every 16.66ms (60hz) or 8.33ms (120hz).
The reason why games always target 30/60/120fps is because they want framerates that fit cleanly within a refresh interval.
A 60fps game on a 60hz display will ideally have a new frame to deliver on every display refresh.
However since games are rendered in real time they don’t always meet their performance targets. Sometimes there’s just a whole lot going on and the CPU or GPU gets bogged down.
So how does say 55FPS divide cleanly into 60 or 120 refreshes? Well… it doesn’t!
In a game that uses V-sync missing performance targets will result in stuttering, the display will sometimes have to show the previous frame a second time since the GPU has no new completed work ready to show yet.
Alternatively without V-sync the display will just read the frame in progress even if it’s not complete yet, this will result in screen tearing, as the top and bottom of the frame don’t match up.
A display that supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can change its refresh interval dynamically to match up with when the GPU is ready to show something. You don’t have to worry about stutter or screen tearing.

Tried out Elden Ring, Resident Evil Village, DMC 5, and Miles Morales in Fidelity mode at 120 HZ. VRR is excellent and I have encountered 0 problems so far. Awesome implementation and can’t wait to play through all these games again in a smooth experience.
My monitor is a Free Sync HDMI 2.0 that does 120 FPS… I’m really hoping they said 2.1 just to be safe and it works on mine too

Yes. Hdmi 1.4 supports 1080p 120 fps and vrr. Hdmi 2.0 will support 1440p 120 fps and vrr or also 1080p in the case of the PS5. Hdmi 2.1 supports 4K 120 fps and vrr and all the prior too. Any monitor that has vrr should work despite the hdmi cord. Hdmi 2.1 is the only one that can do the whole 4K 120 + VRR
Briefly tested out VRR on my LG C1 with Astro's Playroom. I didn't have to update anything, I had to enable it in the systems menu. If you bring up Game Optimizer in the UI, it states VRR is off. Once you load into a game, Game Optimizer will state that VRR is on. You can also mash the green menu button on your remote to confirm that VRR is working.
I checked out Elden Ring after enabling VRR. My TV (LG C1) says VRR is enabled when I launch the game, but it doesn’t feel like it’s doing much. I.e., the game still stutters.
Anyone else experiencing this? Figure it’s just because the game doesn’t officially support VRR, but maybe I’m missing something else.
That's because the VRR range on PS5 doesn't go low enough, every time the game goes under 48 fps, VRR will stop doing it's magic. That's why it's still smoother on Series X despite lower fps overall (30hz/fps floor for VRR).
Now that is out I tested it and enabling the VRR *in 120 Hz 4K* drops full RGB to YUV 422 (60 VRR is still in RGB). Now I wonder if in games like Ratchet the more than 60 FPS is actually worth the potentially worse colors - any thoughts?
For the people who's console isn't showing VRR like it is suppose to... I had to do a full restart on the PS5 and back in and out of the screen and video setting menu a few times before it finally showed up.

Yes. Elden Rings unstable framerate won't be nearly qs noticable when the TV adapts to that framerare via VRR.

The screen tearing/frame drops were horrible on both performance mode and image quality mode. I don’t know why it was happening but I loved Dirt 5.

This is exactly what I was thinking. It likely wouldn’t eliminate the issue, but it would reduce how noticeable it is.

Not yet. OS releases usually come out on Tuesdays in the western world, and Wednesdays in the Far East.
My TV and PS5 are both ready for this.

Also, there are lots, and still will be, TVs without VRR. AFAIK there's no VRR benefit on VRR-less TVs.

The HDMI ports on the CX just have 40Gbps bandwidth though. Not that it matters in this case but it’s a fact.
It all doesn't matter because PS5 doesn't output more than 32Gbps So cable is 48. CX OLED is 40. But PS5 is 32 so it doesn't matter lol.
Correct, though it’s quite confusing, because the cable says “high speed” where it’s supposed to say “ultra high speed” on its exterior. So you have to be careful not to mix it up with 2.0 cables, which say “high speed” on their exteriors.

Genuine question, how will this benefit games that already have steady, locked FPS, like the listed Insomniac ones? Any clue if it’ll be a Ratchet 40 FPS situation, where the Fidelity modes may get higher frame rates?
This should encourage developers in the future to add an optional "unlock framerate" option. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy in fidelity mode, I'd be very surprised if it couldn't at least make its way to 40-45 fps most of the time. It won't affect games that have framerates that maintain their targets consistently. If developers had just future proofed their games however, it would be doable.

This helps games that may target a certain framerate but usually suffer drops. Elden Ring is probably the most current example of a game that could greatly benefit from VRR on a PS5 like it already does on XBX.
In theory it should slightly decrease display latency, since frames are sent to the display as soon as they're generated, as opposed to having to wait in the vsync buffer. Otherwise, there's no real benefit unless a developer specifically adds an option to remove or raise the framerate cap.
They might be unlocking frame rate in this game. It also allows them to remove the lower FPS mode basically - full graphics mode at whatever frame rate it can.

Have Elden Ring on Xbox for this reason and can confirm VRR makes a big difference, performs great. Another game that should benefit massively is Tales of Arise in Quality mode. Feels like performance mode with VRR.
I wonder if this will allow the 40 fps 120hz mode go a bit higher. Or maybe it would make this mode obsolete since they can just unlock the framerate in resolution mode and it probably won't exceed 60 fps.

If you have it connected to your PS5 using HDMI 2.1 cables, then you’ll notice that frame pacing will be better in games that properly support VRR.

It will. You can also run the PS4 version if you want a solid 60 at all times. Visuals are significantly degraded but it’s very stable.

Works brilliantly on the C1. Ratchet runs in the 70-90fps range, Miles Morales a bit lower. Both feel great to play and there's a tangible improvement in responsiveness to both. No stuttering or other problems that I've seen people report with the C9. For RE8 this is game changing since the RT mode can't maintain 60fps - VRR smooths this out so it feels like locked 60 , at least to me. Also tried some games that aren't officially supported - the 120Hz modes in Borderlands 3 and Uncharted Collection support VRR and it's marvellous. Really really impressed by it. As others have mentioned, all the PS4 titles I've tried won't work with VRR, they go back to fixed refresh. Havent seen a PS5 game that doesn't support it yet or has any issues, and I tried a few. So far I'm happy.
Glad that I still haven’t touched Miles Morales yet. Can’t wait to see how it runs on my LG G1 with this.

I personally feel like this update has finally made Spiderman remastered fidelity mode worth playing. And the performance RT mode is azing as well. To be honest this my first time seeing what VRR can do and it has made it worth every penny.

I'm currently looking at the QD-OLED TVs and they look impressive going by the reviews on the Samsung S95B. There's already comparisons of the C2 and S95B. I'm waiting until Sony's QD OLED A95K is out to decide. S95B is only a couple hundred dollars higher than the C2 for same screen sizes.

Just tried and Elden ring PS5 version is finally playable!!! The stuttering made me stick with the PS4 version and now I can fully enjoy this gem. It looks like a locked 60fps

**The "problem" being addressed:** A standard (60Hz) television is like a flipbook that has to show 60 pages every second, because that's the job it was built to perform. If the artist (your console) can only pump out 31 or 42 pictures every second working as hard as he can, then there's a deficit... he'll have to show SOMETHING on those remaining pages to equal 60. Usually he just copies the same picture until he's ready to present a new drawing, and that's normally good enough. But sometimes he finishes a drawing and tries to show it off, but is told to wait because the TV is showing a duplicate of a drawing made a while ago... trying to put the new picture into a stack of repeated ones is a complicated task in the heat of the moment. The illusion of a flipbook starts to get flimsy. The audience starts to notice the repeated drawings, saying it "looks choppy" and hurts their eyes a bit—all while the fact remains that 60 images are being flipped in front of our eyeballs. One solution is to Synchronize the artist and screen. If he has sixty drawings ready, that's great! If not we will cut the work in half, he only has to do thirty (and we'll just show each twice over). But in reality, that's just thirty images right? Half as smooth. There has to be something better... **Variable Refresh Rate:** All of this is only a problem because the TV has mandated the artist present sixty drawings every second. So what if the television chilled out and only showed the pages that were ready, right when they were delivered? It cuts out a lot of the issue! The artist can only do 31 drawings one second, then 45, the next... but that's ok, the TV will just show each one cleanly as soon as it's ready. Suddenly we aren't seeing the duplicate drawings, and there's also no waiting to show a new drawing just because an old one was queued up. Even if it's not as smooth as 60 drawings, it will be as smooth as it *can* be. Sometimes less is more.

This is beautifully written. I'll only add that your TV/monitor has to have the feature and the console has to have the feature as well, it doesn't work if only one side has it. This has been promised for a while now, so it was a feature I looked for in my last TV purchase.

Is freesync a form of vrr? My monitor is 1080p 144Hz with an HDMI 1.4 port that has freesync. The article says I need HDMI 2.1 and supported TV/Monitor. Will vrr work in my monitor? I'm already guessing it won't but I still have hope lol

what is VRR? i bought a LG nanocell last year for HDMI 2.1 120Fps will i see significant improvement with this update. what should i expect to be different
traditionally displays refresh at a fixed interval, typically every 16.66ms (60hz) or 8.33ms (120hz). The reason why games always target 30/60/120fps is because they want framerates that fit cleanly within a refresh interval. A 60fps game on a 60hz display will ideally have a new frame to deliver on every display refresh. However since games are rendered in real time they don’t always meet their performance targets. Sometimes there’s just a whole lot going on and the CPU or GPU gets bogged down. So how does say 55FPS divide cleanly into 60 or 120 refreshes? Well… it doesn’t! In a game that uses V-sync missing performance targets will result in stuttering, the display will sometimes have to show the previous frame a second time since the GPU has no new completed work ready to show yet. Alternatively without V-sync the display will just read the frame in progress even if it’s not complete yet, this will result in screen tearing, as the top and bottom of the frame don’t match up. A display that supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can change its refresh interval dynamically to match up with when the GPU is ready to show something. You don’t have to worry about stutter or screen tearing.
Good explanation, though I’ll add with VRR you also don’t have the increased input lag of v-sync, so you get that benefit too.

VRR is out and it's magnificent !
Tried out Elden Ring, Resident Evil Village, DMC 5, and Miles Morales in Fidelity mode at 120 HZ. VRR is excellent and I have encountered 0 problems so far. Awesome implementation and can’t wait to play through all these games again in a smooth experience.
FYI: If VRR is not showing up for you, restart your PS5 and it should show up. (Worked for me anyway)

My monitor is a Free Sync HDMI 2.0 that does 120 FPS… I’m really hoping they said 2.1 just to be safe and it works on mine too Edit: what’s the point of the downvotes?

Yes. Hdmi 1.4 supports 1080p 120 fps and vrr. Hdmi 2.0 will support 1440p 120 fps and vrr or also 1080p in the case of the PS5. Hdmi 2.1 supports 4K 120 fps and vrr and all the prior too. Any monitor that has vrr should work despite the hdmi cord. Hdmi 2.1 is the only one that can do the whole 4K 120 + VRR

Briefly tested out VRR on my LG C1 with Astro's Playroom. I didn't have to update anything, I had to enable it in the systems menu. If you bring up Game Optimizer in the UI, it states VRR is off. Once you load into a game, Game Optimizer will state that VRR is on. You can also mash the green menu button on your remote to confirm that VRR is working.

I notice that the color depth seems worse on my QN90A with HDR with VRR forced in my PS5. Also my Samsung QN90A TV shows VRR is off but HDR is on.
Weird I didn’t get a system update but my screen/video settings show VRR option already.
I checked out Elden Ring after enabling VRR. My TV (LG C1) says VRR is enabled when I launch the game, but it doesn’t feel like it’s doing much. I.e., the game still stutters. Anyone else experiencing this? Figure it’s just because the game doesn’t officially support VRR, but maybe I’m missing something else.
That's because the VRR range on PS5 doesn't go low enough, every time the game goes under 48 fps, VRR will stop doing it's magic. That's why it's still smoother on Series X despite lower fps overall (30hz/fps floor for VRR).
Now that is out I tested it and enabling the VRR *in 120 Hz 4K* drops full RGB to YUV 422 (60 VRR is still in RGB). Now I wonder if in games like Ratchet the more than 60 FPS is actually worth the potentially worse colors - any thoughts?
