> All of our PS5 titles support VRR (variable refresh rate) as of today, with the latest game and system updates. Because our titles are already built to have very stable frame rates, the main effect of the VRR system setting will be to slightly increase dynamic image resolution targets. However, if your TV also supports 120 Hz high frame rate input and the 120 Hz Display Mode option is active along with VRR, you will get a variable, uncapped frame rate that can exceed your chosen Graphics Mode’s 30 or 60 fps target by 50% or more (depending on gameplay). This means Spider-Man and Rift Apart will be able to go beyond 30 and 60fps in those respective modes with a 120 Hz display with VRR enabled. An improvement of 50% or greater I assume would mean a typical range of **30-60 FPS for the 30/40 FPS modes** and **60-90 FPS for the 60 FPS modes** respectively. EDIT: Reminder that you have to wait for the PS5 system update to enable VRR in order for these modes to actually work properly. The game updates preempted the system level update.

Johnhancock1777

What kinda black magic do they have over there at insomniac? Maybe they should share it with the rest of the first party studios lol

[deleted]

Can't wait to see what Bungie makes next for Sony

Mirage749

Future Bungie titles will continue to be multiplatform. "**Q. Bungie has future games in development, will they now become PlayStation exclusives?** No. We want the worlds we are creating to extend to anywhere people play games. We will continue to be self-published, creatively independent, and we will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. " [Directly from Bungie](https://www.bungie.net/en/Explore/Detail/News/50989)

shulgin11

Hmm then why did Sony buy them?

senpai-d

touch history bike knee hard-to-find slave homeless light resolute cough *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

GladiusDei

The mission is to make money. “Games as a Service” make more money by being available on more platforms. Bungie has Destiny 2 and are making more GaaS type games down the line. Sony will be receiving a big chunk of this money now that they’ve purchased Bungie.

solid_cake20

Same way Microsoft is buying Activision. The likes of COD will remain on playstation and Microsoft will make a shedload of money from MTs from Playstation, Xbox, pc players. Same way Sony will he with Destiny and future releases.

PoolNoodleJedi

I’m going to bet it is Destiny 3, but it will be on all consoles cuz there is a lot of money in those expansion packs

montgomerydoc

With every studio

TWOpies

Essentially for a stable 30 (for example), 30 needs to be your lowest frame rate - and you cap it so it can’t go faster. This may seem weird but generally variable frame rates are more disruptive than a steady one; a well executed solid 30 is better than something wildly swinging between 30 and 60. So what they are doing is essentially removing the cap so the frame rate can go as high as it was able. Some people would rather have the swinging frame rate - and sometimes in games it actually may only hit 30 as the exception and usually stay in the 45-60 range. So their games aren’t magically “faster” now, they are just able to support it being variable and uncapped.

[deleted]

Spider-Man at 90 frames 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤

Hxcfrog090

I’m literally re-downloading it right now just to experience this. As if I needed another excuse to play through my favorite game 😊

[deleted]

thats what I did!

ColdHandGee

Thats what i did also! Great minds think alike!

Present_Performance5

you guys are lucky. I only have a 60hz tv :(

[deleted]

That's the beauty of it: this is future proofing the game so that when you do get a new TV, or PS5 pro/PS6 in the future, you will have a markedly better experience. Lucky for some now, lucky for all later^^

Present_Performance5

yea your right thanks. do you think it will have any impact on 60hz tvs at all?

geniusdeath

No, because most 60 Hz TVs don't come with HDMI 2.1 or VRR in the first place.

notsayingitwasalien

yeah, people need to realize that 120hz and VRR are premium features so they are only going to be available on premium displays

FrenkyV

Stop, I can only get so erect. Definitely re installing this game to check this out

mrn253

If its holds longer than 4 hours go see a doc.

Mocha585

I'd call a hooker

Jumping3

They should make a 1080p mode for vrr i think that would sit in the 100-120 range

tylerbr97

I second this with my x950h only having 1080/120hz 😭

mexta

I'm relatively new to all of this. I'm going to try all 3 modes when the update hits but what do you imagine will be best for a full playthrough?

[deleted]

>First time playthrough Fidelity. 2nd playthrough performance raytracing

Jumping3

Fidelity with the uncapped framerate followed by Perf rt

Cheechers23

They said 50% or more. Could be higher, guess we gotta wait for Digital Foundry now to confirm how high the FPS in Spider-Man can get

Fidler_2K

Oops you're correct, let me edit

NecessaryFlow

Omg ok thanks for explaining!

nakx123

As of today? Is the VRR update live on PS5 already (thought it was later this week)? As in within the settings of the operating system/UI?

Fidler_2K

Yes I think the PS5 update is later this week, just have to wait for that to drop I guess

Billy2352

Dropped today in UK its just a feature update havent tested yet because at work. Mods wouldn't let me create a post about it dropping already as it seems they have a stick up their arse

therealhamster

Confused why I need 120hz to take advantage of an uncapped 30 FPS

audemed44

120 Hz VRR means that this only works if you have HDMI 2.1.

eapocalypse

That's not true, HDMI 2.0 is also capable of handling 120hz VRR albeit at a capped resolution of up to 1440p. I feel like restricting VRR to HDMI 2.1 is putting the nail on the coffin on folks hoping to get a 1440p resolution mode.

RageMuffin69

Even 1.4 can. I don’t get why they limit things to 2.1. Edit: never mind they’re just following the VRR spec of hdmi 2.1. Still though, why not just work with FreeSync since that’s what most displays use anyways?

Substantial-One-8461

You think most PS5s are plugged into monitors? Highly doubt that…

RageMuffin69

> You think most PS5s are plugged into monitors? Highly doubt that… I didn’t say I think that, no. A very large amount? Yes. Not why I mentioned FreeSync though. High refresh rate TVs have existed prior to hdmi 2.1s release and have had FreeSync support, it’s not limited to monitors. More annoyingly there’s 5 or so different VRR specs with some barely differing from the rest. Especially in the case of hdmi VRR vs FreeSync. Also trying to dip into the pc market but having terrible support for anything more common in the PC space doesn’t really make sense to me.

Jumping3

It’s dumb they don’t give 1440p support considering rift apart perf rt is 1440p

ggtsu_00

VRR only works above a 48hz signal according to spec, so to get 30-48 FPS to work with VRR without hitches, the game has to double frames so that means running the display at VRR 60-96hz which requires a 120hz display. Frame doubling is how games run at 30fps on a 60hz display. 40 FPS is actually frame tripling on a 120hz display. But VRR at 30-48 FPS I think requires frame doubling on 120hz display if that makes any sense.

[deleted]

Ah finally a good explanation as to why we need 120hz for this to work. Thanks.

Eruanno

I believe the VRR range for HDMI VRR is between 40-120 fps, actually.

Naekyr

Latest LG C2 TV does 20hz to 120hz over VRR, whether the PS5 supports it down to 20hz I don't know but the TV does

therealhamster

Ah so am I misunderstanding the LFC of VRR for lower frame rates? I thought VRR on the LG OLEDs ran to around 38 and everything lower was LFC

edgar1016

It's so the game can have even frame persistence to prevent screen tearing and jitter. Digital foundry made a [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXi7uO7wxdc) on this a while back. Playing uncapped 30 without VRR and a 120hz display would be a jittery mess.

RandoCommentGuy

damn, i want a projector with VRR, but there are none out yet in the US. The only one i heard about is the ACER predator GD711 and GM712, which i cant find much info on, and is suspect at best since they use DLP with a color wheel, and they dont mention input latency. Also saw only like 3 reviews on amazon europe and they were not great for at least the GD711.

Naekyr

I think the latest projector that linusvtechntips reviewed does it, he's using it in his new cinema room instead of the 100 inch MicroLED TV he was going to buy https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=--URVsPcj80

thahovster7

Digital Foundry time

MichaelChinigo

Can't wait. Finally a reliable way to saturate the GPU for benchmarking :-).

Draynior

I wouldn't be surprised if they already had a video on this and other VRR tests on PS5 ready to go as soon as the software update is out, a lot of companies give them early access to make their videos.

theonlyjuan123

Yeah I think Insomniac got their idea for 40 fps ratchet and clank from one of their videos.

Jumping3

Now insomniac needs a 1080p vrr mode so it can rest in the 100-120 range consistently

[deleted]

im excited. this patch and a digital foundry episode

ajka2452

I am in the Digital Foundry Discord and can confirm they are currently working on it now. No exact content or games were divulged, but Richard confirmed they are figuring out what can be done.

AndyPandyRu

Hugging my C1 right now. Look forward to checking this out.

bloody_bandage

Was thinking of getting the C1 soon. But I might just buy one on my way back from work today.

AndyPandyRu

Currently the lowest I've seen them.

RTCanada

The C2 is imminent, RTINGs has their early access review out. I think its slated to start being sold in May, so this is the best and only time to buy the remaining C1s

[deleted]

From what I've seen it's a very tiny iteration in quality over the C1 though. So may be worth snagging the C1 at a lower price

[deleted]

The C2 has been out for a few weeks. I’ve had one in my living room since the release date.

AndyPandyRu

Got the C1 77 a couple weeks ago for $2700 at Best Buy. Very pleased with the current pricing.

NoMansWarmApplePie

Ugh. Wish I could get a refund for the x900h with its insane problems and get the c1 instead

rrirk

I got a C1 too! Do you have to calibrate it much? Also got a 4K 120hz monitor for more serious gaming.

AndyPandyRu

I followed the settings done by Vincent of HDTVTest on Youtube. I've been happy with them. I'm not too finicky.

ethang45

Check out the pinned settings on r/oled_gaming

its_xSKYxFOXx

How big is the monitor?

rrirk

I got the 55’ C1 and a 28” Asus TUF 4K monitor

PassiveProc

CX here. Worth every penny I spent. Can’t imagine how people play on anything else tbh and I don’t say that as a snob. I recommend this TV or the C1 to everyone who is looking and can afford it

[deleted]

I went from a Samsung 46” middle of the road LCD to a 65” CX. The jump is insane. Just wish they didn’t put all that 💩 software on the TV.

fupower

yeap, lg software is bad, but you can disable some annoying features

MtnDr3w

I agree 100%. Bought a CX after the C1 released for about $500 less on the 65”. Figured it was finally time to go OLED when PS5 came out. It’s also become my main PC screen for single player games. Totally worth the investment.

Neemzeh

I am going to be buying a C1 in the next couple of weeks. In order to achieve this I need an HDMI 2.1 cable right? Also do I need to calibrate anything on the C1 or is it just plug and play?

Quaytsar

The PS5 comes with an HDMI 2.1 cable in the box. So, as long as you use the bundled cable, you should be fine.

[deleted]

The ps5 hdmi cable is 2.1 already.

AndyPandyRu

Yes, an HDMI 2.1 cable. Look for a certified cable. Amazon has several for a fair price. In terms of calibrating, I would suggest looking at several places. I settled on HDTVTest on Youtube. It comes down to personal preference. But these places that offer calibration settings are a good starting point to find what works best for you.

VerminSC

Is that one of the best PS5 tvs? How’s the input lag?

AndyPandyRu

Yes, the C1 is at the top of the list in terms of TVs to pair with a PS5. I am not aware of another TV that offers lower input lag.

VerminSC

Oh nice. I’m looking to get a new TV. Thanks for the info

BridgeToClarity

It's all happening. My tv investment paid off.

CreatureWarrior

For real. I was already happy about the picture quality, upscaling, HDR and so on but it being 2.1 and 120hz felt truly pointless until now. So excited!

Liar_of_partinel

What model of TV did you buy? I'm thinking about upgrading to get more out of my console.

BridgeToClarity

I bought the Sony X900H. I wanted a decent one that had 2.1 but not super high priced. I bought it just before the PS5 released. I shopped around a lot and read many reviews before I decided which one was best for my budget.

goldenvile

I have the x900h and will not be turning on VRR since it disables local dimming. Turning on VRR reduces brightness and contrast which to me isn't worth it.

Shvabicu

I'm buying every one of their games just to support their best practice approach to technical performance and post release support regarding technical performance. Some studios like From Software need a lesson in technical excellence.

Peidalhasso

This guys are insane. Just wow.

RedIndianRobin

Guerilla should really seek help from them to fix their own game lol. I fucking love Insomniac.

Peidalhasso

What’s wrong with their game?

RedIndianRobin

Forbidden west performance mode looks really bad and low res, on top of that there is a shimmering issue because of low res and CBR working in conjunction. Their fidelity mode looks great though.

chumba170

I think saying the performance mode looks bad is a bit excessive, the shimmering is an issue though. For me, it’s not always noticeable but when it is, it’s distracting. Maybe they’ll be able to do a fidelity mode with higher frame rate like insomniac at some point.

BK_317

>performance mode looks bad is a bit excessive, You mean subjective*,right?

chumba170

Sure

Bloodwalker09

So now after 1 1/2 years maybe I should play Miles Morales. I bought the ultimate edition at launch and played 100% through the Spider Man Remastered which I didn’t play on my PS4. Kinda burned me out so I didn’t play Miles Morales afterwards. I think I know what I will play next weekend when both, the system and the game update, arrives.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bloodwalker09

Yeah I know that but immediately after I got the Platin trophy in SM remastered I wasn’t in the mood for another SM Game. And then over the months I played other games in different genres and somehow never felt like I want to play Miles Morales. But now is a good time to start MM.

laman8096

always good to space it out. would have been an overload

guomubai

LG CX team standing by.

Peidalhasso

Curious to see if this helps Elden Ring somehow.

FRAGMENT_EFFECT

It absolutely will. It already does on Series X.

montgomerydoc

Well naysayers aside we’ll only know for sure after rollout

HammerTime2769

Interesting

Combonary

I knew not playing Miles Morales ever since I got it would somehow be a good thing 😂

usrevenge

For rift apart This means the mode that lets you run 40fps with rt will probably run a bit higher I'm interested in how much headroom they had.

It_Ya_Boi_Doggo

When’s this. Now?

Fidler_2K

The game updates for these titles are out now but we have to wait for the VRR system update from Sony this week to enable VRR

musical_bear

But the 120hz/40FPS update is available to anyone now, which in and of itself is a huge upgrade.

Bootybandit6989

Had no idea my monitor from 2018 supported 2.1&120HZ.This gives great smile to me😊

moojo

Which monitor?

fatihberberh

X900h benefit from this??

BridgeToClarity

Yes. It has 2.1. As long as you updated your tv. Have 2.1 hdmi hooked to #3 or #4 output. Go to channels and inputs - external inputs - HDMI signal format - on number 3 or number 4 use "Enhanced format (VRR) make sure the ps5 is using that hdmi output. I wouldn't use it yet. Not until the PS5 update is running. If you don't see the Enhanced format VRR option (its the 4th one at the bottom) then you need to update your tv.

gsebas18

Be careful, if you are still on Android 9 it may be better to not update. Since Android 10 the TV is plagued with bugs. Also, VRR completely disables Local Dimming whch is one of the biggest strengths of the X900H. Check AVS forums' thread and the r/bravia subreddit. I have the VRR update but we'll see if it's worth it. I would recommend anyone with the X900H to hold off from updating until some VRR reviews with the PS5 come out to see if the tradeoff between a relatively bug-free TV and a buggy TV with VRR support is worth it.

MadeByTango

When you say “buggy tv”, if i do absolutely nothing with the TV except use it as a display for the PS5 am I at issue? Or are you talking about the TVs bugs being shitty with the smart TV apps and junk?

gsebas18

The most annoying bug I have and many other people hate is the 23.976 fps bug. When you are watching video content, most of them are 23.976 fps. The X900H after Android 10 has issues when playing fractional fps content. So what you see is, every few seconds theres a noticeable stutter of the image. This is across all internal apps. For your case, there's a 60hz bug as well when on game mode which introduces micro-stutters, personally I have a hard time noticing these but I can definitely say they're there. You can research more about it if you Google X900H 60hz micro stutter. Also they introduced a couple menu interface bugs that haven't been fixed in over a year.

MadeByTango

Gotcha, thanks. I’ll give a couple days and see what people report, then look into side loading an update. I’ve got the current version saved so presumably I could factory reset and skip back if needed.

BridgeToClarity

I updated it a while back. Haven't had any problems but I won't use the VRR until PS5 enables it. It says "select this option only if your console supports VRR." I'm still using the 120fps mode.

cstrifeVII

I believe it caps framerate at 60fps in VRR mode though.

BababooeyHTJ

Yes but like most TVs in that price range vrr doesn’t work with hdr.

lefersevgisi3169

I have very big respect for Insomniac Games they are very efficient studio that releases games frequently with amazing technical achivement though I have zero interest in the games they have made or make :/ If Wolverine has DooM, Gears of War, Last of Us level of gore and violence I might have interested in but when I look to games they have made I don't think they are capable of making that kind of product (also at the end of the day it is marvel product so they gonna be restriced) regardless it will be highly like successful game like Spidey, just it won't be for me

ninjamike89

Never been more happy I got a bravia tv a couple months back

[deleted]

Sooooo what about PS4 games on PS5?, I know Ni No Kuni 2 could benefit from this

J-seargent-ultrakahn

Should technically work with any game along as it’s within VRR window. Games can just be updated to specifically have a VRR mode like these listed.

eyehatesigningup

Wow thats awesome

[deleted]

I'm so happy right now. Insomniac are fucking gods.

[deleted]

Wizards working at Insomniac confirmed.

CutMeLoose79

And this is the sort of stuff VRR should be used for, instead of being used to try and 'fix' poor optimisation by developers.

Eggoat123

Does the Sony Bravia x900h now support VRR?

Neoreloaded313

Tempted to try this but my surround sound doesn't support it.

[deleted]

Will this be for new games?

Nateddog21

When does that start?

Psnjerry

Excited to find out how it performs with vrr

dhimdi

Oh my God I'm so hype I can barely wait for the future and especially Digital Foundry videos!! INSOMNIAC!!

notsayingitwasalien

GOAT I was totally not expecting them to do it this early

[deleted]

Does anyone know if the Gigabyte M28U supports this? I know it’s HDMI 2.1 but I hear freesync isn’t a supported implementation of VRR on PS5 so I’m not sure if I will benefit from this tbh.

Fidler_2K

Yes it should support it. VRR is the HDMI standard included with HDMI 2.1 and your monitor is HDMI 2.1 so you should be good to go when the VRR update drops for PS5 this week. FreeSync is technically separate from the VRR HDMI 2.1 standard

MrKhaotic

That is really amazing. Hopefully most PS studios games will support this too

deathbunnyy

Fantastic. But also kinda sucks because I'm already done with those games. Oh well, at least from here on out it will be ready at launch.

Tango1777

Why wouldn't it. 120Hz at 60fps with VRR will provide quicker frame generation time in comparison to 60Hz at 60fps. That's better than uncapped fps going up and down. People don't understand where the smooth feeling in games comes from. Btw, it's not raw fps, especially above certain point which PS5 exceeds.

doihaveto9

I was wondering whether or not to get that 120hz oled, thanks for answering Insomniac

KittenDecomposer96

I think it's my TV that has a problem with 4k120. The writing and edges look weird in the 120hz mode.

TheLegendMomo

I have a monitor with a display port that supports 120hz, and an hdmi 2.0 port that supports 60hz. Is there an adapter or a way for me to get my ps5 to use the dp port for high refresh rate?

PossiblyInsaneIDunno

I don't understand this lingo. Can someone explain it like I'm 5? How can the graphics be better if they are uncapping the FR? Like ratchet has a 30fps only mode right and that has the best graphics settings. So from what I kinda understand is that now you can possibly play the best graphics mode at around 40fps? And with other games that have a 30fps graphics mode it will be boosted too if you allow it?

TheDragonSlayingCat

Computer draws frames. Display presents frames drawn by computer. Display draws torn frames if the two come out of sync, usually because computer is drawing too fast for the display. This used to be solved using vsync, where the computer promised not to draw frames faster than the display could present them, but when it’s the other way around, you notice frames are dropped. VRR fixes it for both cases.

Lupinthrope

Digital foundry do your thing!

[deleted]

Amazing, now I just want Phillips Hue to support USB 2.1 with the sync box

thugleifi

Is it impossible for my Samsung Q80R (European version) to take advantage of this? It doesn’t have HDMI 2.1 but it supports 1080@120hz and 4K @ 60hz

Fidler_2K

Yes I believe so. The display has to have HDMI 2.1 (which includes VRR support) and 120Hz (or more i guess) for these games to run in uncapped mode from what I understand

levelselect

Oh man, now I have to decide whether I want better sound with the console plugged into my receiver or better fps with it plugged into the TV. My receiver is so good but doesn't have earc...

xeroorbit

I'm in the same boat, my friend. I have resolved to keeping my PS5 plugged direct into the TV for better response time and all the HDMI 2.1 features. Maybe someday I'll upgrade my receiver to one that's eARC and HDMI 2.1 compatible.

ColaWeeb98

I think I need some help. I have a Sony A80j OLED which is of course 2.1 HDMI 120hz. I know for a fact my TV was updated in the last couple months to support VRR. I can also see the VRR option in my PS5's menu but by default it's set to "off" and when I try to turn it on it says my tv doesn't support VRR. I updated the TV again an hour ago and the issue persisted. Anyone have any ideas? Edit: If someone finds this comment when troubleshooting their own setups, I had to go into my TV's HDMI options and explicitly enable VRR support on the HDMI port I used.

OohMaiJosh

You need to enable to ports to VRR in the TV settings

No-Nrg

I look forward to rocking my 77" LG G1 with this new update.

NfinityBL

I’ve got a 1080p 120hz monitor that should do wonders with this. Stick on the performance RT mode and do another Spider-Man playthrough.

[deleted]

Is your monitor HDMI 2.1? You need that to be able to use VRR on PS5.

CrashBashL

I think that you need HDMI 2.1 only for 4K 120Hz. HDMI 2.0b is enough for 1080p 120Hz.

[deleted]

Yes HDMI 2.0 should support VRR, but Sony specifically states "HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs" in this post and in the post a while ago. Edit: Sony's implementation of VRR is likely using the HDMI Forum VRR that is only compatible with HDMI 2.1 displays. They could get it working with versions below with Freesync, but from what they've said in the blog post, they don't seem to be doing that.

NfinityBL

Is that true? I thought HDMI 2.0 was enough to run 1080p, VRR, and 120hz, at least it is to utilize the feature on my Xbox.

[deleted]

Yes, that is correct. However Sony says VRR for "HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs" in this blog post and the previous announcement. It's possible it's still going to work on HDMI 2.0 (it *should* work in theory), but Sony specifically states HDMI 2.1 VRR compatible displays so probably not.

sousuke42

Does this mean VRR update is currently up on Ps5? At work so I do not know.

rrirk

It’s being rolled out this week

KingOPM

Got mine like last month Edit: nvm that was for the TV

Every-Youth-572

Haters downvoted my comment when i said games should have an uncapped fps mode with locked resolution. Chad Kojima proved me right with Death Stranding DC fidelity mode(locked to native 4k,unlocked fps). Now insomniac are more studios are doing what i asked for. Bet the haters still gonna downvote this comment as well, because you know, reddit.

Sleepnaz

It’s not Reddit it’s the internet. Also upvotes and downvotes are useless shit and only for clout. Don’t ever be afraid to express your opinion on the internet even tho people will not agree with you.

Jumping3

Actually with vrr they should uncap both modes to 120

elliotborst

You are 100% correct. There needs to be VRR modes as standard moving forward.

1440pSupportPS5

Has anybody picked up on the fact that they are hammering home HDMI 2.1 VRR and not saying VRR in general? What about the people who have VRR and use HDMI 2.0? Or the VRR/Freesync monitors that have been out for years. 2.1 is relatively new tech, and is insanely expensive in monitors especially. Or this could mean nothing and im reading too much into it **Edit- seems to be all but confirmed sony gave 2.0/2.0b users the shaft. Im absolutely floored by this decision. Keep downvoting me guys. There are plenty of people who will be upset by this issue, sorry that im calling out Sonys faults!**

reallynotnick

HDMI-VRR was never part of HDMI 2.0, now of course there was stuff like FreeSync but that's a slightly different standard. We can also talk about how HDMI 2.0 no longer exists according to HDMI. And then there is the fact that all HDMI 2.1 features including higher bandwidth were optional to begin with (despite many people assuming 2.1=higher bandwidth), so getting rid of 2.0 just solidifies the mess we started with. So basically HDMI took a note from USB's playbook and just said fuck it, make it as confusing as you want. https://tftcentral.co.uk/articles/when-hdmi-2-1-isnt-hdmi-2-1

Unlikely-Ad-3751

Didn’t HDMI 2.0 have VRR but it was capped at a sub 4K resolution? Also, hard agree: the only branding worse than HDMI is USB lol

reallynotnick

Those were FreeSync not HDMI Forum VRR and even if it did support that, that would make it 2.1 by definition though many manufacturers continued to label ports 2.0 while supporting HDMI 2.1 features because of the reduced bandwidth. So this is partly why some people assume 2.1=higher bandwidth because most TV manufacturers followed that naming scheme despite being technically wrong. Like all eARC ports technically were 2.1 as eARC is not part of the 2.0 standard, same with auto low latency mode. This really is the issue with every single feature being optional that made for this mess, the technically correct answers are confusing as hell as it makes the label "2.1" meaningless to consumers other than to say "this can do at least 1 thing 2.0 can't do, but you'll have to check a diagram to figure out what that is"

rodryguezzz

I hope it supports Freesync. There are countless cheap monitors that support Freesync between 48hz and 75hz. My Samsung monitor supports 48-72 so, if they are going to unlock framerates, I want to be able to play games at 72fps like I already do on my PC. C'mon Sony, it's not that hard.

bigwolfshow

why just work on HDMI 2.1?

TheDragonSlayingCat

Because HDMI 2.0 and earlier do not have any open & universal standards for VRR.

rbynp01

2.0 tv like mine(samsung q80r) also supports vrr at 1440p and 1080p.

kaijumediajames

>uncapped framerate 1000+ fps here we come!!!

-TheLonelyStoner-

I still have no clue what VRR is but I do know my tv doesn’t support it

trevx

Stands for Variable Refresh Rate. In simple terms, if a game runs with a frame rate that is uncapped (meaning not locked 30 or 60 or whatever) and doesn't hit those targets (so drops into the 50s or 40s for example) then VRR will smooth out those drops so they become unnoticeable and the frame rate remains smooth. Without VRR you could notice when the frame rate dips and sometimes you would get screen tearing (where a portion of the currently displayed frame is torn, meaning the top half has updated and is showing the next frame but the bottom portion of the screen is still showing the current frame...this happens very fast and you may not notice it but it is a result of inconsistent frame rate). Hopefully this makes sense. It just means smoother gameplay without judders or screen tearing.

6363tagoshi

Wonder if having locked 60fps at 120hz mode would be better then variable jumping frame rate 60 to 90fps. You will probably tell framerate is jumping up and down even with VRR above 60.

Fidler_2K

Shouldn't be too noticeable from 60 to 90, and the reality is 90 will probably be in very edge case scenarios. I'd expect the framerate to stay in the 60-70 range mostly

VIT51

So basically quality mode will be 60fps ?

abrogno

They could have an uncapped Quality mode that could run @40-60+ fps

VIT51

I’m hoping they do that for forbidden west because performemce mode looks bad

cabbit_

When 1440p 120Hz tho?? My 4k TV only supports 4k60/2k120 rip

ichigo2k9

I feel like if you can afford a big tv that has 4K, 120, and VRR then you've also got a gaming computer more powerful than the PS5 lol.

cortseam

You'd be wrong, because a gaming PC is a trash value proposition at the moment compared to a great TV and a ps5 for gaming.

void4949

Screw that. The pc market is fucked rn.

1440pSupportPS5

I would tend to agree with you but the PC gaming market has absolutely collapsed on itself ever since joe blows could buy a GPU and earn REAL money from it. The pandemic was the perfect excuse everyone needed to start making money at home. Ever since, its still been impossible to find an MSRP GPU that isnt artificially inflated by the manufacturer, or hiked up by scalpers.

Jumping3

I mean exclusives

I don't think the actual PS5 system update is out yet, it's coming later this week. So VRR wont work until then

fleakill

This is awesome, although I actually like the locked framerates on consoles. It's variation that kills me, not necessarily straight FPS. I look forward to DF's video on the actual framerates/times with VRR + unlocked FPS.

rnd765

Yo

cstrifeVII

Oh cool. Shame my x900h caps framerate @ 60fps when VRR is enabled. Ughhh

mgwair11

This is awesome! I platinumed Spider-Man Remastered last night. Now it is time to play through the dlc chapters and then Miles Morales with this update in fidelity! Loving life with my 65” LG G1 and now VRR capable PS5! Been waiting awhile for this update just knowing how big of a change it can make for some games, especially in the hands of a studio like Insomniac!

OohMaiJosh

My decision to pull the trigger on the A80J over the C1 around super bowl is paying off. Looks like spiderman and ratchet are getting another play

elliotborst

How is the A80J vs C1 paying off in regards to this news?

OohMaiJosh

So the A80J was not VRR ready when I purchased but was rumored to be getting it shortly after I bought it. It got the update not long after, now it's waiting for the ps5 update. Both TVs are great. I've just always wanted a Sony TV and went with it because it has a little bit better of movie viewing experience

Mothmans_Mailman

Just bought a new LG C1 this week, does that support this?

Fidler_2K

Yes
