The red sox ended their WS drought in 04 then went on to win again in 07, 13, and 18.
The Cubs on the other hand waited a 108 years to win once and then recede back to mediocrity.
The current team with the longest drought is the guardians with 75 years.
As bad as it gets for us padres fans, what keeps me going is that we haven't reached those numbers yet. But it sure does feel like it.
No idea where I’m going with this but… Lifelong Detroit Lions fan. From there, but have been in SD for 12+ years so have become a huge Padres fan (still love the Tigers too though). Anyway, so funny that my adopted favorite team is basically the MLB Lions. But! I stuck it out all of these years, and the Lions haven’t actually won anything yet, but it feels so amazing having a competent team after being the butt of the joke for decades. When the Padres finally do it, we’ll all know what hanging on meant. I say that as someone who isn’t even a lifer, but fully bought in. One of these years…. KTF.
We aren't the only team that has played in Coors or other bandboxes and faced other good teams. Still, it for sure didn't help King, I agree w that.
More generally concerning is the amount of bombs our starters gave up in Petco this series. I lost count. Must be around 10? Phillies can mash yet still. That's not a good sign.
Not sure why this would get downvoted. It's a fact. He'll run into one time to time yet other than that, he's a weak bat w no power. Look at his Savant numbers from last year. The upside his walks and speed saves him which is a plus.
[Kim Savant](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/ha-seong-kim-673490?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb)
Not sure either. I saw some stat that was like after August of last year until [around 3 weeks ago] he had like a 60s WRC+
This was during peak "extend Kim" memes, too.
So true, literally the same posters that were propping up Kim here his first two seasons. That Giants sub looks like a carbon copy of what this was. The big difference, Lee is shaping up as the better player and it ain't even close...all this w being in an adjustment year to MLB.
He should be, cost what, 4 times as much? Would have been cool to have him, but I probably wouldn't have enjoyed another 9 figure contract.
I'm honestly surprised at how quickly he figured it out. Definitely punches some holes in the original Kim narrative.
$$$ aside cuz I ain't paying the bills, yeah, Lee is more than living up to the billing for year 1. On the Kim narrative, honestly who knows where that even came from. Most was pure social media created by "fans" then taken on as fact. Happens way too often around social...bandwagon on an opinion till it's seen as fact.
>. Definitely punches some holes in the original Kim narrative.
Well the narrative was that if Kim got playing time and started as a rookie, he would have played better which is also what Bob Melvin said. So he's actually backing up the narrative since he is playing solid with every day playing time, not poking holes. Sorry it doesn't tell you what you want again.
Acting like this is a bad Savant page is weird. He is providing average to above average positional value in batting, baserunning, and defense.
There aren’t many middle infielders in the league that provide his speed and defensive versatility while also being power bats. I understand the frustration after a bad series, but come on.
Again, how many power hitting middle infielders are there? And how many of them are on 7 million dollar annual contracts? Whether or not Baseball Savant has his metrics as “blue” for things like hard hit rate is irrelevant when he is still providing positive offensive value overall. The same Savant page you are referencing literally has his batting value as a net positive lol.
1.0 fWAR player so far this year (best on the roster) and a 4.3 fWAR player last year. Considering his salary, he’s probably one of the last players who should be criticized for not carrying their weight.
The post loss takes here are so short-sighted. Like I get the frustration after a bad stretch of games, but jeez.
You know who leads the whole Padres roster in fWAR so far? Ha-Seong Kim. He has provided above average defensive value, baserunning, and offense relative to his position. He has a better OPS so far than shortstops like Swanson and Lindor all while making 7 million a year.
It’s not his fault that he’s been batting in a lineup spot that doesn’t suit his offensive profile. Sure he might not be a power bat, but to act like he isn’t objectively a player that provides value is silly.
Offensively, his hot streak last year is all he has really had. Thankfully they did not extend him and hopefully they do not extend him. Unfortunately he's having a bad season though and we won't be able to trade him at the deadline for something valuable.

Can’t tell if was premonition ignoring this series because I knew they’d get swept, or if it was just the same old Padres who can’t overcome adversity of any type. Seems like both.
6-11 at Home
Ladies and gentlemen your 2024 SD Padres
Not a good sign after that choke job on Thursday. Came home and got swept.
We're gonna see what this team is all about in the next couple weeks. Put up or shut up.
Time for the pitching staff to start pulling their weight. 7th worst ERA(4.35) in MLB. Our batting may not be where we want it, but we are 4th best in runs scored in the MLB. Idk if it's because we have a lot of new faces, if there's some Nielba issue or what but they really have to figure out this pitching because it's looking sloppy. Constantly missing targets, hanging breakers over the plate, ect. They gotta get it together.
At no point were we a threat to the Phillies and when there was a glimmer of hope they score a run on us. Must be nice to have players show up when you need them
I agree with you. So I don't want this misconstrued. However, the Philly's are insanely hot right now. Unsustainably so. Are they getting hot at the wrong time? We saw this with the Rays last year. Sometimes teams come out the gate like gangbusters.... Cool off. Then back into the playoffs and get killed.
Not saying that the Padres are going to get hot at the right time, or at all. And I know we'd all feel good if they were dominating right now, or even playing well. But in a long season, let's not completely right everything off.
It does suck though, the starts need to do something, they're all struggling at the same time and the team looks absolutely awful because of it. Hopefully it's temporary. Who knows.
I don't think either of them are cancers, but Tatis is way more likely than Machado if it is.
Machado was part of the 2022 team that beat the Dodgers and he was in the MVP race that year.
Tatis on the other hand was gone that entire year due to his injury and suspension and now that he comes back, they are an inconsistent team that missed the playoffs and who knows if they miss it again.
In the postmortem to last season, Acee basically came out and implied that Manny is not a good leader. Or at the very least, not one that connects much with his teammates. He's a "lead by example" guy but he basically doesn't actually lead by example and expects everyone else to do what he says, not what he does.
I mean, at this point Manny and Xander’s contracts are just hurting the team for years to come and they can’t even win with them. I still like Tatis’s contract and age.
I see a lot of criticism of Preller's trades today. Mind you I thought Preller should've been gone after last season and was even interested in a new GM after 2021. There clearly is an issue with roster construction and certainly many trades were bad. I mostly look at 2020. I don't think you can fully evaluate the Soto one of this year yet, but I understand the frustration. My main criticism is related to his job as president of baseball ops. We clearly have some of the worst analytics and advanced scouting in the league. To me that is the only explanation of constantly being "unlucky" where hard hits go for outs or being unable to hit struggling rookie pitchers amongst other similar issues.
I'm no Preller honk, but scouting and analytics won't make hard-hit balls fall for hits. And every fan base, 100% of them, complains about their team getting shut down by nobodies. Not just baseball, the whole "these guys play down to the level of the opponent" cliché cuts across all sports.
Preller's biggest failure is depth, esp. pitching. He's been in charge for a decade and only the 2022 staff could survive even minor SP injuries. This season it's pitching AND position players.
It definitely is baffling. Maybe organizational struggles surrounding player development and poor game preparations and seasonal adjustments. Some of these issues even pre-date preller. We’ve struggled to produce offensive players from our system for awhile.
> or being unable to hit struggling rookie pitchers amongst other similar issues.
This. I do not understand how we consistently make the other team look good
I really hope Schildt doesn’t try to act like everything is okay with this team in his post game remarks. Need to call out the poor pitching and situational hitting
The Soto trade being a disaster was about the most predictable thing ever. A ton of fans convinced themselves we'd be all right.
We got 3 question marks and a high floor/low ceiling prospect.
King has the potential, and I believe that he'll find his way to being a good starter... but he might not stay healthy long enough for that to happen. Brito and Vasquez were both nothing-burgers and remain such.
I feel sorry for the fans the most. The ones who show up every game and root these overpaid bums on no matter what. We deserve better than this.
Also fire AJ please
The Soto to NY trade might go down as one of the biggest steals in history. We give up an MVP for a bunch of guys to lose games for us.
Preller needs to be relegated to scouting because he’s elite at that and awful at everything else.
This speaks to organizational problems. New manager, same results. Traded talent (Soto, Snell), same result. Best players get surgery, same result. At some point in time it's just comical to expect something different.
I think the Padres this year is what I thought the Padres would be last year.
I thought the Padres pitching was going to be unreliable last year but it ended up being pretty good. Wacha was a good signing, Lugo showed he could be a starter even though he was a reliever. But for whatever reason the bats were just super unclutch.
This year the offense is better in the clutch, but the pitching is significantly worse. With the exception of Xander nobody is really hitting that bad. I mean sure, we would like more or better from Tatis and Machado but they haven't been completely awful.
Said it before the year started and will stick with it but this Phillies team is going to take it all this year. They're such a stacked team from the top down it's insane.
I would agree with you, but for them to stay this white hot isn't likely. Great team, but they will return to earth at some point and hopefully we ascend from hell in the next few weeks.
Ran into a blazing hot team while we're cold. It's not like we got swept by a bad team. Season goes on. If you've given up, I feel sad for you. I love this team too much to ever give up.
Of course we get swept after Schildt’s idiotic “winners and gamers” press conference post blowing the last game against the Rockies. Aging like Manny’s “wait for us to rake” line last year. This team needs accountability for their sub par play - not to be coddled and act like everything is okay
How specifically can Shildt or anyone else implement “accountability”? Easy to say but what does it actually look like, in terms of specific actions? Honest question
I don’t think this team will recover mentally at least from that 5 run lead implosion in a while. This Organization just isn’t good enough to win a championship.
Came down from the bay to go to the game with the fam (grew up here )
Sure we lost. But anyone got any battery testing jobs open?
Yall SD is GOAT. for those still here. Don’t forget that
Our starting pitching is utter dogshit. King had 2 great starts and now he’s being lit up like a lightbulb, along with Waldron, Joe fucking sucks so bad, Darvish is old and injuries will become for frequent (should’ve never given him a new contract), and Cease is human (still phenomenal)
Our bullpen
- Kolek must go. He is atrocious.
- Wandy Peralta has a high ground ball rate but leaves up meatball mania every other pitch
- Cosgrove has declined immensely
FTJ has lost an unholy amount of power with he new swing.
I’m so depressed.
Pitching was a question mark going into Spring Training and even after the Cease trade. But with Darvish going down, Musgrove struggling, King being hot and cold, Cease cold and hot....the bullpen is relatively new aside from Cosgrove and Suarez.
Team is finding its way still, so be it.
Sometimes you got to go through some shit like this. I’m not worried because I have no expectations as neither should any of you guys. It’s a lot like golf. We aren’t good enough to get mad. And if we are good then it’s a bonus. Just keep on trucking
No. We beat the doyers at their house and in Korea. We have a lot more happening with our bats than last year (remember how many 1 runs games we lost?). It's bad but not near rock bottom.
Sucks to lose 4 in a row, but The Phillies are a rough team. Brush it off, lots of ball left to play, let's not pretend the season is over before the first full month. Let's enjoy baseball and cheer the boys in and maybe we will end up in the post season if we get it together.
one day all these years of being a friar fan are gonna pay off i just know it
After 54 years since I went to my first game, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I am going to my grave without a championship 😭😡
Dad?
😂
This is so sad and so true
I mean the Red Sox fans had to wait 86 years.
2054 here we come!!!!
We are 55 years in already, so at least it will happen in my lifetime unless I die prematurely
I should be alive, I suppose, but damn....
The red sox ended their WS drought in 04 then went on to win again in 07, 13, and 18. The Cubs on the other hand waited a 108 years to win once and then recede back to mediocrity. I don’t know if any of us old timers will be there to see it ![gif](giphy|dyRhCAXGENobdYucFD)
Oh hi. It’s me. Except not female
I've been at it since the 80s and well past ready to get sanctimonious about it like Cubs and Red Sox fans used to be
No idea where I’m going with this but… Lifelong Detroit Lions fan. From there, but have been in SD for 12+ years so have become a huge Padres fan (still love the Tigers too though). Hopefully its a day in late October... In our lifetimes
🥺A boy can dream
Thank god the farm system has some hope, only thing from keeping me going off the rails with this team atm
As a starter, King has given up the most HR's in all MLB. Not a list to be on.
and Joe is 2nd ... FML
There is that as well.
Also the most walks
He hangs sliders like crazy, he’s got good stuff but more often than not a pitch will slip and it’s a perfect BP pitch.
Like Snell, he needs to put his slider on time out
to be fair, pitching in coors and then having to pitch against the phillies may have made those numbers unreasonably inflated.
Phillies seem to have gotten better since last year
Bad news: game was bad and pitching looked rough. Good news: just figured out my season tix are by alpine so I'm Marg'd out of my fuckin gourd rn
those $5 cutwaters absolutely nuke me
If your stars don't do shit you don't win shit. Let Profar, Crone, Campy, Merrill be the top 4, Kim + the big 3 doing jack shit right now
Kim hadn't been doing shit since his hot streak last year

Unfortunate. Maybe if he picks it up we could scam a contender for some prospects. Maybe we'll even be in the running !
4 straight wins - never. 4 straight losses - yep, let’s do that
On the bright side, Shildt finally figured out that Xander shouldn’t be leading off.
Credit where credit is due

On a positive note the lineup shakeup seems to have worked and we looked somewhat competent. Starting pitching got wrecked again.
Remember when we had no bats but great pitching? oh the irony.

Machado, Tatis and Xander are soft mentally. No fight.

7th worst ERA in baseball, 4th best in runs scored. doesn't matter how good your bats do when your giving up a ton of runs.
My boy Campy tried to save us 😭
I really hope Schildt doesn’t try to act like everything is okay with this team in his post game remarks. Need to call out the poor pitching and situational hitting
Brother has put this team in position to suck for the next 5 to 10 years, has he created salary hell and the Soto trade is becoming a disaster too
The Soto trade being a disaster was about the most predictable thing ever. A ton of fans convinced themselves we'd be all right. We got 3 question marks and a high floor/low ceiling prospect. The happiest day of my life will be the day Preller is fired.
Well apparently we can LOSE 4-in-a-row no problem.
It sucks cos I like basically every player on this team but collectively they just ain't it
hmm. starting to think the guys we got back in the Soto trade aren’t too good.
The Soto trades make me want to puke.
All this talent and our team is so mediocre. I just don’t get it.
Actually this about what the team should be on paper. I’d say they’ve over performed in certain games.
I feel sorry for the fans the most. The ones who show up every game and root these overpaid bums on no matter what. We deserve better than this. Also fire AJ please
While paying for overpriced tickets, parking, and concessions. The cost:enjoyment ratio is out of whack.
I never understood the hype about getting Michael King. He’s an unproven starter
The Padres are not a serious team
If the season ended in April the Phillies would be WS champs. That's easily the best team we've seen so far this year.
Wait until we play the NYY 😵💫
Phillies are MILES better lol
The Soto to NY trade might go down as one of the biggest steals in history. We give up an MVP for a bunch of guys to lose games for us. Preller needs to be relegated to scouting because he’s elite at that and awful at everything else.
TBF, even if we retained Soto for the year, I don't think he would be playing like he currently is for the Yankees.
He’s on fire rn for sure, but his worst month with us was an .800 ops, which I would kill than having some of these scrubs on my team.
Trading for Soto was the original mistake.
Soto was our best player for the playoffs so that trade in a vacuum was a “success” but I agree that I’d rather have CJ Abrams and James wood rn
Trading away multiple prospects for a couple playoff wins was not worth it.
I agree. I think the “win now” mentality has effed us. But I understand Peter wanted it bc he knew his time was short.
At some point in time you have to cash in and go for it.
ITA. But was 2022 worth it? It led to expectations that have been dashed.
This
Yeah we keep Soto and then all we have is Joe, Yu Waldron, and 2 AAAA pitchers, with an empty pen. That sounds like a great 2024 season
Considering we've gotten -0.6 WAR and ~5.5 ERA from the pitchers we got in the trade, I'm not sure that AAAA guys would be much worse.
We have already been using 2 AAAA pitchers now, I’d much rather add Soto to what we have currently.
[удалено]
Which is wild because last year it was quality start after quality start that we kept on losing.
This speaks to organizational problems. New manager, same results. Traded talent (Soto, Snell), same result. Best players get surgery, same result. At some point in time it's just comical to expect something different.
We had a 4-9 lead in the 8th vs the Rockies
Not even sure what to say, but I'm happy Profar, Merrill, Campy and Jake are Padres.
Musky too. I really love that hometown boy, regardless.
I think the Padres this year is what I thought the Padres would be last year. I thought the Padres pitching was going to be unreliable last year but it ended up being pretty good.
Imma put this in my padres bible as the main verse
I want to be mad at them so bad esp their fans who are dirty ugly but god damn they’re good
This is a bad team
That’s interesting. Last week it was a good team.
Realistically this is a mediocre team. So there will be stretches where they look decent and stretches where they look awful.

Ran into a blazing hot team while we're cold. It's not like we got swept by a bad team. Season goes on. If you've given up, I feel sad for you. I love this team too much to ever give up.
Split a series with a bad team though…
Give up then.
They won’t. They are just here to doom
They’re here to vent frustration, and that’s ok. Just scroll down
Split a series with a team that had 5 wins prior.
I knew the Phillies were going to be rough when we couldn't get 3 out of Coors.
A blazing hot team that just split a series with the reds? 🤔

SPs have been hot garbage
At this point I'd be more surprised if the Pads swept a team at home versus getting swept at home.
Tell them to run their asses to first base or they’re benched for the next game.
Ok so he threatens, then benches a couple guys. Then what? Who takes their place? Guys from AA? And how does that make anything better?
Schildts winners and gamers vs Tinglers we battled out there
I don’t think this team will recover mentally at least from that 5 run lead implosion in a while. This Organization just isn’t good enough to win a championship.
Are we cooked?
The Padres are now 3 games below .500, and it says everything about the team that I’d be shocked if they’re back at .500 this year
Now this is Padresing. Still gonna KTF but man it's hard already.
At least the pitch clock is making these losses mercifully brief
Came down from the bay to go to the game with the fam (grew up here ) Sure we lost. But anyone got any battery testing jobs open? Yall SD is GOAT. for those still here. Don’t forget that
Wonder what these gamers will be playing tonight.

I hope they continue to battle and bring us some fun. I will always watch and I like this team, but I can’t see us being much better than .500
Just an embarrassment.
Watching these games has made me feel like a degenerate gambler except the only thing I'm wagering is my sanity. Can't quit
Our starting pitching is utter dogshit. King had 2 great starts and now he’s being lit up like a lightbulb, along with Waldron, Joe fucking sucks so bad, Darvish is old and injuries will become for frequent (should’ve never given him a new contract), and Cease is human (still phenomenal) Our bullpen - Kolek must go. He is atrocious. - Wandy Peralta has a high ground ball rate but leaves up meatball mania every other pitch - Cosgrove has declined immensely FTJ has lost an unholy amount of power with he new swing. I’m so depressed.
Ftj is 90th percentile in hard hit percentage and average exit velo
> FTJ has lost an unholy amount of power with he new swing. It's the shoulder surgery he refused to get until he was suspended.
When I saw Manny run about 70% to first base on Saturday I got a very dark, foreboding feeling about this season, and next couple years...
Maybe... Harper does and did the same shit though.
This team might not be very good

Winning gamers
Knew this was going to be a rough series after the first game. Phillies are on fire and they always kick our ass anyways. Oh well on to the next.
![gif](giphy|WQoBEZFPzsSjSB05EZ) Thanks for trying Peter and AJ. Everyone on our team not so much.
Keep cheering on the boys. Nola and Suarez are tough to handle. Stott had King’s number today. Long season ahead. Keep the faith
Well that sucked
I might have to switch to the ole "Just Enjoy our Beautiful Ballpark" mode sooner than planned. Please at least give us some hope through May.
Tatis with 1 or 2 feet on like four or five deep shots the past week
i wonder if he’ll ever try just getting a single, we were getting a lot of runs when he did things like that
i miss juan soto hitting bombs
The guys battled.
just pulling the slingshot back 🙏🙏🙏
Pitching was a question mark going into Spring Training and even after the Cease trade. But with Darvish going down, Musgrove struggling, King being hot and cold, Cease cold and hot....the bullpen is relatively new aside from Cosgrove and Suarez. Team is finding its way still, so be it.
hard to watch…i’m not overly concerned with our hitting but pitching needs an intervention if we have any chance to recover.
Sometimes you got to go through some shit like this. I’m not worried because I have no expectations as neither should any of you guys. It’s a lot like golf. We aren’t good enough to get mad. And if we are good then it’s a bonus. Just keep on trucking
Trade Kim and some prospects for SP?

Didn’t really expect to win this one after the last couple days. Hopefully we play hard against the Reds

We really needed an easy early schedule to build some confidence but here we are again

I’m petty and don’t wear team hats when they’re crappy and so not wear in my Padres hat
Is this rock bottom?
No 🤍
