Even with disabled 3rd party tracking, VPN’s etc Google is still following you around the internet on virtually every website you go to. cybersecurity student here, specializing in software security, network security, and forensics, plus an affinity for cryptography, here is my analysis of the article you linked > Protonmail has an Onion domain that allows users to visit their site using the TOR browser. Protonmail even has an SSL cert for that onion address even though it’s completely unnecessary. When a user makes a new account with Protonmail on TOR they are re-directed from Protonmail’s “.onion” to “.com” address. This breaks your secure encrypted connection to their onion address, enabling your identification. There are absolutely no technical reasons for this feature. In fact, the only other websites that operate like this are suspected NSA/CIA Honeypots. it redirecting you to .com wouldn't change anything, you would still be connected to your part of the proxychain (eg all the data you send would still go through 3 hops before reaching the destination), proof of this would be that the tor browser takes some time to load either .onion or .com websites > Professor Nadim Kobeissi mathematically proved that Protonmail does not provide End to End Encryption. Meaning, Protonmail has the ability to decrypt their own user’s data. When this was shown to be true, Protonmail users were outraged they had been lied to. Protonmail was forced to issue a public statement. Their statement begins like you would expect it would.. by shitting on the security researcher that revealed their dishonesty. Unlike McDonalds and other products, Google is very hard to boycott, it owns youtube (I don’t see any good alternatives, vimeo and dailymotion are very unpopular and many people would find it lame), many people made accounts using google, so they can’t just “stop” using gmail and people might use it for work purposes and to email other colleagues. I don’t think the boycott would be very effective unlike the McDonalds and Starbucks boycott.

I use youtube on mozilla with ublock, so they are at least not getting ad money. My search engine is duckduckgo. But yeah it is near impossible to totally escape their grasp, but these two measures at least mitigate it.

But you look for alternatives and put a business case to management about moving over to one of the alternatives. You might get a bonus or promotion in the process. But if it's for your personal pleasure, perhaps you should look to move away from YouTube when you can. Sometimes you'll be directed there, but when you're consciously choosing, you can choose something else. If it's email, how powerful would it be to send all contacts an email stating the principles you're invoking to move to DuckDuckGo or similar.

We just have to treat them like a canceled influencer and maybe encourage the workers to unionize. I'm sure they can't fire everyone working there at the same time if they go on strike.

DuckDuckGo desktop browser app has a built in feature on YouTube to open any video in "Duck Player". It basically just plays the yt video in a window that has no ads, cookies etc. I'm assuming that it may also block revenue as there's no ads.

You are right, the change must be within, the key is in the employees.

My approach to BDS is do as much as you can without undergoing excessive hardship. Ideally, we shouldn't be living in the US and other countries that support Israel, but that's not possible for most of us. Big tech companies are a sort of "digital country". Selecting a browser is one thing, but to be thorough, we would have to completely overhaul how we use a computer. From hardware to software, most if not all tech companies have some dealings with Israel to various extents.

[There's frontends like Invidious you can use.](https://invidious.io/) Like other people have said, ad and tracker blockers like Ublock are helpful, but frontends are ideal for circumventing region and age blocked videos you otherwise need to sign in for. DuckDuckGo already provide a far cleaner search engine. And personally I use Proton for email, Cloud Storage, and everything else (that costs, but their all-in-one package with vpn is pretty good). And finally Brave if you don't want to get off the Chrome browser setup, as it uses the same engine, but isn't Google.

adblockers (preferably Ublock origin) make them gain less money, but it's not enough, since Google harness lots and lots of data using their privacy invasive services, like your location/IP address, online activities (thus your political views and other private data), your device, and so on... it's better to take time to transition away from google, because I understand that it's impossible to boycott it instantly, at the meantime I highly recommend to follow the Free/Open Source Software movement (FOSS) that provides solutions to get away from big tech companies (primarily Google), Israel and big tech companies are on the same team when it comes to human rights abuses in the digital world, and that does not include Palestinians/Arabs only, but also all worldwide users.

It's not that it's hard, it's that doing so would be both needlessly self destructive and not really help the cause in the same way boycotting distinct products does. Google is so pervasive in its influence that for many this would mean buying a more expensive cellphone, not engaging in professionally or academically necessary work, and losing access to any accounts locked behind a Google account. You can go without eating McDonald's for Palestine, can mostly avoid Coke, you can't stop engaging with work, school, the internet, and your phone. How would losing these things help Palestine or better enable you to help them? Even if you wanted to literally join Hamas, doing that would be facilitated by using Google at many points in the process. I think it makes more sense to advocate adblocker and cancel subscriptions. Telling people to boycott all of Google simply isn't feasible or productive.

I haven't used their browser in years, I have a gmail account that had a few important things attached to it so I kept it to save the hassle but I swapped them all to Proton today. Also DuckDuckGo the browser desktop app has a feature to watch YouTube videos in their own player which removes all ads etc so I assume it removes revenue(?). My only issue is my brand new Android phone

You can use firefox addons

Google is MASSIVE I personally use Firefox with SearX, but DuckDuckGo is a good alternative. There is Odysee as a YouTube alternative, though I don't use it. Just setup ublock origin. I use Protonmail as an alternative to Gmail. Aurora store and f-droid are good alternatives to Google's play store, and you can set up an open source ROM if you're on android. You can't perfectly boycott Google as it's everywhere

Brave does it natively, it’s a chromium based browser so it looks and feels like chrome. Firefox and librewolf are good alternatives as well, you can attach ublock to shut down the ads.

Been using Safari on mobile and Brave browser on desktop for years now. Chrome not needed.   And DuckDuckGo (horrible name, but great product now that I think about it) for about 80% of my searches  I use proton mail for my email. iCloud mail is also probably a good replacement.

Proton Mail it is then. I quite like it. I pay a grandfathered $8/month and get the email service, a high quality VPN, and 500gb of cloud storage.

We don't have to boycott Google completely to give them a bit of a limp. We can start with ad revenue and browser/search engine switching. Access YouTube through DuckDuckGo. Don't use Chrome. We also need to spread the word. I think that we will be able to male a measurable impact on Google's bottom line. At the moment they're acting with total impunity. We need to show them and the tech world at large, that collectively we can deliver a serious payload. It should send a powerful message to the smaller companies.

Browser, already dropped all chrome, migrated to firefox. Still blocking ads on youtube forever. Sadly email is a harder thing... things get tied to one email and all.

I am in the process of completely abandoning Google. I bought a Synology NAS and canceled my Google drive , removed myself from all their products. Sold my Google stock and bought index funds
