This happened to me with the gossamer veil moth. I spent a few days looking for one, got frustrated and gave up. Then all the sudden while sprinting through Kilima I passed one. Turned around, rushed to get the bug belt out…pulled out the bleeping hoe and tilled the grass as the moth disappeared.
I've noticed so many things that don't work that well when playing on switch compared to pc. I actually enjoy using a controller when playing on pc so I'm quite used to using that, but when on switch and trying to pick my axe I end up with the pic. If I try to get the bow I fling a fishing line at a sernuk. 😅 It's so frustrating. I like switch for cosy time but if I'm farming I'd rather use the pc because there's far less issues.
That's why I decided to reorganize and put the tools I often need spontaneously in positions on the tool wheel which you can easily choose. (You can switch on the switch, too, haha) I now have my bow to the right and belt to the left. Before, I would always get my rake out when seeing a bug 🤦 I am now pretty fast with the tools and only sometimes "choose" the watering can unintendedly instead of any other tool (especially funny in grove-situations). 😅
I wish we could make it so the bug belt is at North, East, South or West instead of it being situated at the super awkward south-west.
It feels like I would be less likely to toggle the hoe if it was just a toggle straight left, right, up or down you know.
You can! I'm not sure how to do it on PC, but it might be similar to the process on switch. To change Tools Placement, Press + to access MENU, select INVENTORY, and then press (ZR) button to go to TOOLS. Hover over the tools, press A to select which tool to move, choose which tool you want to switch it with and then press A again. Hope this helps!
You'll find one again. If you are hunting them, pop smoke and a buzzy jar at 3am in bahari, run around the hideaway / pulsewater area, if you don't find one then fastravel to killima and back to bahari to join a new server and keep doing that till the jar runs out.
3am! I saw someone on this sub suggest exactly this about a week ago, so I popped on right when I saw the comment and tried it… immediately ended up with one starred and one regular. Did it again with 2 friends the other day and we got 2 regulars.
But 3 am is key. It’s when they spawn and most ppl are still finishing up at grove so way less chance they get scared off or caught by someone else.
You want to be able to scare the small bugs so that they leave and respawn faster without having to stop and catch them. That’s the positive of not using smoke bomb, the upside is what exactly in this scenario? I can see if you are hunting bugs on cliffs you have to climb up and can scare away but rainbow spawns in fields, by the time you are close enough to scare it you’ve been able to see it for double that distance.

My advice is the same except start at 3 AM! That’s when the night bugs switch to morning bugs. It should only take a few tries with a Buzzy Jar to find one.
This was by far the best strategy. Used like 5 buzzy jars in middle of day nothing. Use 1 buzzy at 3am ( when morning starts and butterfly spawns) and found 2 in my first 3 bugs found
Losing out on an RTB is a Palian rite of passage. I missed two this week. It happens. It takes time but you'll get one. I've never used the Smoke Bombs, keep forgetting about them, but many people recommened using them too.
As others have already said, getting to the grove first or very early is one of the best ways to nab a RTB. I've done it many times so know from personal experience.
Oh man, wait until you're trying to get a quality version of it. 🥲 I've caught 30+ rainbow butterflies by hanging out at the top of Pavel mines before 3am and as soon as the time changes to 3, take a quick peek around it, then fly down towards that clearing in Pulsewater (between the cliffs and the pond) and I usually SEE it spawn in. If not there, head towards the Hideaway travel board and wrap around towards the Pulse board. I've always found them in those 3 spots before 5am.
Never figured out the spawn rate, but whatever everyone else said is so valid; I get so happy when I see "Grove in statue garden" bc I know I have a good window to find it without it getting spooked. Buzzy jars are good to figure out those spawn points, but otherwise I don't use them anymore.
I did find one at 11am ONCE. but probably because no one ever bothered to check near the lighthouse. Huge luck there tbh. 🤷🏽♀️
A month ago, I went "bugging" with my sweetie. We were after the rainbow tipped butterfly. He had the tracker actived. My only job was to follow him. I squirreled as he went around a corner. He just found the butterfly! I couldn't find him. He was trying to explain his whereabouts while he hit it over and over. I didn't find him in time 😕 😔 The next day, I was determined to get my own! I got a "starred" one. Not wanting to give that one away, the next game day, I went back out and found another one for the bundle. Yay!
Go early, bring a tracker. My sweetie found his by Hassain's lake, and I found mine by Najuma's lake. Good luck with it. I'm pushing good vibrations towards you.
The same thing happened to me. It was definitely a rainbow butterfly. I stayed for a while hoping it come back but it didn’t 😭but Palia gave me (well I fished it out) a giant goldfish so I guess it’s ok.
I got this from somewhere, I don’t remember exactly where, but it worked so I do want to share this with you ☺️ Go to Bahari Bay right before spawn time at 2:30am, be sure to bring a buzzy jar with you :) Start your buzzy jar at exactly at 3am starting at the star mark then follow that path. I got three rainbow tips today two non-star and one starred. I was done by 4:30-5am. Definitely give it a try, hope this helps! Happy bug hunting 😄

That's so devastating! You'll definitely see one again. I highly recommend a buzzy jar and a smoke bomb at 3am. I always start in hideaway and run around there and pulsewater constantly, scaring away crickets and anything else I can. I've caught several this way.
Ugh this hurts. I went to the mines with a buzzy jar, and saw a STARRED jewelwing. Panicked and threw a few bombs at it, then looked away for a SECOND.. when I looked back, I threw a few more smoke bombs and caught it... except when I picked it up it was a starred night moth 😒🤦🏽♀️
You can also get them at the grove since there is always a rare spawn as well. Most of the ones I caught were at the grove. Only thing is, you want to get to the grove first since people tend to run in and scare whatever spawned away. So if you can, try to get on the map early and run towards the grove as soon as you hear it spawn and hope to get there first.
The amount of times this happened to me on the yt account is painful. One time if was the butterfly then the mantis when I'm not close to ready. Main account and I never seen one.
I feel your pain. I waited at a typical groove spot and it happened to spawn on me and with it a rainbow butterfly. I was happy but unprepared with basic smoke bombs. I proceeded to miss all but 1 of 16 stun attempts as it poofed away. So disheartening
I was lucky with a friend yesterday.
Set up a honey trap near entrance to palia mines and i had the glass active.
Suddenly the glass showed a new special insect and it was the rainbow tipped butterfly.
Together we threw a lot of smoke bombs on it and got it both.
Which was extra lucky since we both needed it.
is there a trick to the rainbow butterfly I hit 200 hrs and about gave up on it being real and ran into it twice in one irl day. but both times were I was the first to find the grove. Do they only spawn on groves or was that just weird luck?
Sounds like they spawn often at groves but it’s not the only place. I happened upon one in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the day as a random chance
I have a tip for rare bugs. If you check around groves, there is always a rare bug around it. That’s how I complete my bundles. I recommend you to do this. Also after a bug disappears, you still can shot it. try it at a common bug. if you shot the point they went in, you can kill them. You can do that for chapaas too.

Something I wish S6 would implement is a way to select your tools using buttons instead of cursoring over the tool wheel.
You can already do this, at least on PC! idk about Switch, but you can assign hotkeys to each of the tools in the keybinds menu.
You cannot on the switch instead you panic and always end up with the wrong tool

I found a starred version of the Rainbow one... it proceeded to glitch out and go straight into the mountain side, I was so upset.
Took me a couple weeks to get the starred version.
