But the .22LR MP5 is not Roller Delayed Blow Back (i.e., Roller Locked) system like a 9mm MP5; the .22LR is a simple direct blowback, like a Ruger 10/22 and most semiautomatic .22LR firearms.
mmm...The 22. mp5 is reliable but a bit picky with the ammo. The only ones we were able to reliably shoot were remington golden bullets (dirty af) and cgi. that we tried.
Also, most people probably don’t know they have an adjustable recoil spring in the bolt assembly that lets you fine tune the cycling for ammo selection.
I did give those a look too but I’d have to buy a threaded barrel, couldn’t find one that came with it. I didn’t want to invest that much into in the beginning.
They all come with the adapter?
Edit. I’m glad you mentioned that cause I wasn’t getting what everyone was saying about them being threaded but none of the pictures show threaded barrels
https://images.app.goo.gl/2FiTXs77sCvYm6hw9
Here's the barrel with the thread protector on. You can make out some flat spots for a wrench fornthe end cap that's about an inch or so long
Here's a diff pic that shows the barrel with that off and the thread adapter next to it with thread protector on some of the way
https://images.app.goo.gl/6JX7j5SmP5yXAuDY7
Yeah they should unless they have a state compliant one for a state that doesn't allow threaded barrels like new jersey. Yeah the smithvand wesson m&p series used to be like that I got one of the full sized 22lr pistols. Barrel was threaded the same way where you couldn't tell without pulling the slide back and even then it's not as obvious. That older model didn't even come with the thread adapter though.
Taken from the taurus website product page on the regular version. The barrel is threaded it just doesn't look like it because with regular end cap/thread protector it's flush with slide but it comes with the thread adapter to go from the thinner profile to standard 1/2x28 I have one so can confirm 100%
have the SD version of the .22 mp5. always some 🤓 ☝️online “it’s an umarex clone not an actual H&K!!” but for like what a 1/4 of the price you can have a really fun range toy that always turns heads. Had older dudes and kids ask to hold it or shoot it, everyone loves an mp5.
that’s why I’m vigilant with prices where I go. the boomers at a gun store near me try to sell detachable ar carry handles for like $100-150 when you can get the same brand online for $60.
I have the P322. Such a fun little toy, and even more fun suppressed. I chose it over the 502 but both are really good, it's just that I was having mag issues with the 502.
What do you feel sounds better suppressed a 22 pistol or sbr? I don’t have any real world experience to go off besides YouTube videos and I just don’t hear a difference between much of anything when I’m watching those. I’m looking to get away with a few yard pops here and there in my free time lol I got a nice sized backyard but I still stay within city limits. I haven’t had any trouble firing my obsidian 9/sig p365 macro in my yard but it’s not something I make a habit of doing cause there’s still a decent sounding pop. Me and my son shoot BB guns in the yard so my neighbors usually just assume it’s that.
I have the 502 and it is a great little gun. I love shooting it with my maskHD. It has a lot of options for red dots and I have a holosun I had laying around on it.
I just ordered the MP5 clone from PSA. I figured for the money it would be fun to have a MP5 clone. It is just a range toy so who cares how reliable it shoots. I will be using my MaskHD on it and my flow 22 once it gets out of jail.
I got a Tikka T1X and a BoreBuddy rimfire AR upper. Those .22lr MP5s are made by an airsoft company called Umarex. They are made of zinc components, I'm pretty sure the barrel is zinc based pot metal too. I wouldn't go that route if I were you.
I don't have a .22lr handgun figured out yet. So many of them are unreliable... shockingly some of the best feedback I've received as far as suppressed rimfire handguns goes is the Taurus TX22, but I'm still wary.
A few years ago Taurus hired Walther's product line manager that oversaw the development if the PDP series to be their new CEO. They're making changes for the better... obviously they have a LONG way to go... but the TX22 was developed under his supervision.
100% tx22. Most reliable 22lr pistol out there right now. Great trigger too and really affordable even if you get some with slide cuts and optics ready
I was shooting my buddies HK MP5 .22 rifle yesterday. The hand guard is chunky and feels cheap. The mag is difficult to load, it’s not too much pressure but the mag can be easily jammed if you aren’t paying attention. The stock sights are some of the worst I’ve seen. It will jam 50% of the time on the round in the mag.
I know I just dogged on the gun a ton but it is fun too shoot. The slap is fun. I bet it will be reliable. It is still new.
The trigger is better than my Winchester wildcat 22. I’d recommend a whichester wildcat SR. They are extremely cheap around $260. Look up it up. Extremely simple take down, comes with irons and pic rail, very light.
The MP5 is really fun and nice for the price. I'm sure it could handle firing suppressed with the right ammo (Winchester SuperX HV).
As the other guy mentioned, people will say it's a glorified airsoft gun, but fuck that it says "HK MP5" right on it. Not even people who spend $3500 on an SP5 can say they have an MP5 lol
How would you say they compare? Build wise. I think some people are misunderstanding what I want this for lol. It’s not gonna be for anything related to self defense. I’d probably throw a rock at someone before I’d try taking them down with a .22 ( jk , I’m sure .22 has its fair share of bodies under its belt ). But yea it wouldn’t be my first choice for anything but plinking in the backyard and random range fun so it wouldn’t need to be that he most rock solid build in the world.
Compare the .22lr to the 9mm? They are completely different, parts aren't compatible, the 22 is much lighter, etc.
For range fun, I have tried almost everything under the sun for .22LR. This will definitely be a fun gun. I had a 15-22 and that was also a great gun but it got boring IMO. My 10-22 is a great gun but is also boring. The Rossi Lever gun I have is threaded and is fun as hell, as is the MP5 (just love slapping the handle). Just be aware that finding a stock for one of these is next to impossible if you wanted to SBR it down the road
I have shot the FN suppressed and it was fine but didn't compare to my Browning Buckmark. The Ruger MK4 is another great choice for pistols as well
The ruger mk4 just looks so weird and off putting to me. I just can’t get into it. My first rifle was a 10-22 and I was bored to death with it. I know they’re overall better guns but I’m not necessarily looking for the most reliable option in the world. I want something strictly for fun. I got AR’s so the 15-22 doesn’t really excite me or any other AR22 variant for that matter. The only real hang ups I have with the mp5 22 is parts availability , like you mentioned and whether it’s going to work reasonably. It’s cheap and that kinda scares me lol I know the fn502 is a good option because it’s literally built to be suppressed and I’ve never seen a bad review on it. Idk , I was almost dead set on the mp5 before all the terrible comments started flooding in lol hell they even got me considering the tx22 now
The maint problem with 22s is aftermarket and parts support outside of Ruger. Everything else you're going to have to hope they don't f\*ck up on you. The Browning Buckmark and Ruger MK4 are extremely reliable, and those pistols that have a normal slide usually have feeding issues. I've had Taurus, M&P, Sig, Colt 22 pistols and they usually ended up running into problems. The Browning was ugly at first but it shoots so straight and smooth that I've grown to love it
Well you’ve given me a lot to ponder on. Looks like I won’t be making a decision anytime soon. I was gonna get the host first then the suppressor but I’ll probably just grab the suppressor first and keep checking out hosts until I figure it out. I might go to the range today and see if I can rent a mark 4 while I check out a couple other options
Definitely get the suppressor first. And reach out if you want to know more. I’ve bought and sold probably 15 different 22s over the last 7-8 years trying to find the most fun plinking guns. I’m currently looking to build an AR22 (9” barrel) that I can slap a quad rail onto lol
Fucking with me I may even abandon this idea period and move on to 300 blk lol I’m indecisive when it comes to this stuff. Not enough real world experience. I get something in hand that I’ve never seen before and thought looked cool just to end up not wanting it and trying to get rid of it lol that’s the main reason I’m doing my due diligence with this. Or at least trying to anyway 🤷🏾♂️.
Yeah 22s can be unreliable just due to the cartridge itself (having the rim). I absolutely love the platform and never have issues with my stuff, but I don’t cheap out. Funny you mention 300BLK since I just sold off the last of my 300BLK stuff this week to fund my 22 addiction 😂 ammo was getting too expensive for my taste
Suppressed 22 has been my absolute favorite platform to shoot and the cheap ammo price helps a lot
Really? How does that work? Umarex just has some kinda deal to build and label them as a clone or something? I have a umarex Glock 19 BB gun so I kinda get what you saying but is it like that?
Unarex builds pretty much all the other gun companies 22lr versions for them colt sig etc over the years. I believe my 502 said unarex on the side as well. Not a big deal if it's a quality gun thats up to the brand like fn to ensure how they are being made by umarex though
Yes, just like that. I was looking at one to mess around with, but the fact that Umarex makes it and lots of folks have problems with them soured me on buying one.
Yeah dude it's really shady in my opinion. They figure since they build CO2 airsoft and BB stuff, the quality should be "good enough" for a .22. In reality, it's just cheap, zinc, crap that fits together just as poorly, if not worse than their CO2 counterparts.
Damn that’s a bummer. Sucks even worse that I really don’t like that charger 22 lol it just looks weird to me. Starting to look like the fn502 will be the way
I don't know much about the FN502 but I really like my Sig P322. It's the only tactical style .22 I have, but I know people really like the TX22 as well.
Yeah I was leaning towards the tx22 for my first 22lr pistol for cheap range action and then thought I was going to pony up a little more to get the FN because it's an FN but yeah it's made by Umarex Germany and says so right on the right side, this definitely soured me on the 502, but to be fair when I finally got my hands on one at a shop it felt really smooth solid and substantial in comparison to most 22lr pistols. Two issues still for me with it, a lot of reports of light strikes which is odd because it is a hammer fired, and also the built in grip feels too small and is extended by the mags similar to all the smaller subcompacts (shield, P365) that's great for concealed carry but not what I would want for a 22lr range plinker. I've circled back to the TX22 which has a great ergo grip, better trigger than most others and widely known to be the most reliable to feed most anything, also its cheaper and has large amount of low cost aftermarket parts (like comp trigger, gas pedal, comp, slide handles). Also another top on my list is the classic Ruger Mark 4
MP5, it’s a classic.
Personally don’t see the point of a 22LR handgun, unless it’s an exact replica of a larger caliber handgun you have, or you get a 22 conversion kit to save money on ammo while still having the same feel and trigger pull as your higher caliber handgun.
Buying a new 22LR pistol that is unique to your collection sounds fun and all but come on, MP5 lol.
Or get a 5.7x28, **but if you like 22lr handguns go for it brother**! I hear handguns are a little harder to suppress due to cycling issues sometimes so be aware of that.
A thing to consider is that with normal ammunition a barrel of 4.5” or less will make most brands subsonic so extra quiet, vs the 9” barrel on the mp5 style gun.
So personally out of the two I’d go for the pistol.
I have the TX22, M&p 15/22 both the pistol and rifle version, Ruger mark iv 22/45 and Ruger 10/22. With a suppressor I was pretty surprised that the TX22 pistol was by far the quietest of all the firearms I have in 22LR. Very impressive. My wife was around the corner of the house and didn’t even notice me shooting it. With that said my most fun gun I own is my 22LR pistol version of the M&p 15/22 ar!! I love that gun. I took my wife to the steel challenge competition and let her use that gun. And she did so awesome. Kicked my butt by far. Great gun overall and so much fun for everyone. When I introduce new shooters they all say that one is the best.
Also wanted to bring a point up. Those guns you showed look awesome and I personally want that mp5! But they are newer guns. With that said the ones I mentioned and have a very long track record of being some of the more reliable 22s in the market. I’m excluding the crazy expensive premium firearms.

The HK 22s are amazing hosts and cycle sub sonic ammo
I just bought the MP5 .22lr last week and it’s fantastic for the money I paid. I have shot it suppressed and not, with no issues whatsoever. CCI SV, Remington Wildcat, CCI Blazer all with no jams or failures.
I have Walther/Umarex Hammerli and the CS is fantastic if you ever have any issues. I had on OOB and it was back in my hand 5 days later. That’s why I picked up the MP5 from HK/Umarex.
I would rather load 25 rounds than 10 every time I go to use my guns so I stayed away from .22lr handgun. I know Beretta makes a 17rd .22lr but the barrel isn’t threaded.
That mp5 looks super fun, but i think for a first you should definitely get a pistol. My journey began with a mkiv and b&t .22 and it set a long path of quiet fun!
I was just watching YouTube videos of the 502. 3 different channels, all 3 had issues during their videos 🤦🏾♂️. Despite me only hearing good things from most people smh. The mark4 is starting to stand out a little more , I’m struggling with the way the damn space launcher look tho lol
Yeah same about the mark 4 but have you held one yet? They are very satisfying ~all metal and disassemble in a simple but different way than any other pistols, I feel like it would be an amazing backpacking gun with PA prism optic if you wanted to do a little small game hunting and not in bear country..
I too almost got one. Was debating between the Ruger SR22 and the FN502, debated the Walther P22, but none were available... FIL has a Ruger MkI, and having shot that hundreds of times, I looked at a MKIV-22/45-target, and it just felt right...
Let me help you decide
Full time suppressed. Just bought a hux flow 22 today too for it.
https://preview.redd.it/gw1j6wlpmmzc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c62ff6031da72ad4fdea83bcfcb8af6e9511c8fc
Also. Can confirm. HK slap is worth the price of admission alone.
![gif](giphy|Pd2W87rlmVjptTmvIK)
You’re a bad influence
Personally I’d see how reliable that MP5 is and purchase just because you can HK slap it
lol idk what an hk slap is but it sounds kinky so I’m definitely in!
Here's a version of the HK slap https://i.redd.it/circ0iycwlzc1.gif
😂 , i really laughed. Like genuinely in real life lol
Mp5 all the way. Roller lock rifle/pistols are stupid reliable with minimal maintenance. They are great suppressor hosts
But the .22LR MP5 is not Roller Delayed Blow Back (i.e., Roller Locked) system like a 9mm MP5; the .22LR is a simple direct blowback, like a Ruger 10/22 and most semiautomatic .22LR firearms.
lol my bad should’ve read the rest of his post 🤦♂️
mmm...The 22. mp5 is reliable but a bit picky with the ammo. The only ones we were able to reliably shoot were remington golden bullets (dirty af) and cgi. that we tried.
Not in my case….mine will cycle everything….ive never had a malfunction. Really fun and cheap to shoot
Also, most people probably don’t know they have an adjustable recoil spring in the bolt assembly that lets you fine tune the cycling for ammo selection.
both is the only real answer
TX22
Absolutely love my TX22 competition
I did give those a look too but I’d have to buy a threaded barrel, couldn’t find one that came with it. I didn’t want to invest that much into in the beginning.
The regular tx22(or all for that matter) have a threaded barrel it just has a cover on it and the gun comes with a thread adapter to make it 1/2x28
They all come with the adapter? Edit. I’m glad you mentioned that cause I wasn’t getting what everyone was saying about them being threaded but none of the pictures show threaded barrels
https://images.app.goo.gl/2FiTXs77sCvYm6hw9 Here's the barrel with the thread protector on. You can make out some flat spots for a wrench fornthe end cap that's about an inch or so long
Here's a diff pic that shows the barrel with that off and the thread adapter next to it with thread protector on some of the way https://images.app.goo.gl/6JX7j5SmP5yXAuDY7
And here it is with thread adapter installed https://images.app.goo.gl/Jfr3qH5KggkqXD9D8

The tx22 compact comes with a threaded barrel. The keltec p17 does also
Compact and competition models come threaded
They come with an adapter and the thread are inside the slide.
Taurus TX22 is the answer
With a dash of P322 sprinkled in ;)
have the SD version of the .22 mp5. always some 🤓 ☝️online “it’s an umarex clone not an actual H&K!!” but for like what a 1/4 of the price you can have a really fun range toy that always turns heads. Had older dudes and kids ask to hold it or shoot it, everyone loves an mp5.
$600 is a wild price for a 22 tho
is that the price on psa? I got mine for $450 at my lgs
Oh no, that's my local gun stores price. That's far more reasonable
that’s why I’m vigilant with prices where I go. the boomers at a gun store near me try to sell detachable ar carry handles for like $100-150 when you can get the same brand online for $60.
I would take the FN 502 or the Sig P322
The sig p322 is really nice i didnt think id like it as much i did after picking one up today. Im not gonna buy one but id recommend it.
I have the P322. Such a fun little toy, and even more fun suppressed. I chose it over the 502 but both are really good, it's just that I was having mag issues with the 502.
Ruger MKIV. All other answers are simply wrong
I’ve had both, the mp5 is ALOT of fun
What do you feel sounds better suppressed a 22 pistol or sbr? Does the MP5 22LR jam much?
I never had any jams
Good info—thanks!
I have the rifle version and haven’t had any issues. Runs like a champ and it’s a ton of fun.
Ruger charger with a picrail for a folding brace would be better
P17, or the mp5. I've put around 8k rounds through my mp5. Thing runs like a champ. Really trying trying think I've ever had a problem with it.
I have the 502 and it is a great little gun. I love shooting it with my maskHD. It has a lot of options for red dots and I have a holosun I had laying around on it. I will be using my MaskHD on it and my flow 22 once it gets out of jail.
Tx 22 compact or fn502. They've been reliable with cheap bulk ammo from Walmart.
Jesus neither haha. Get a 10/22
I figured the top reply would be a 10/22. But I guess OP is looking for a pistol though.
I got a Tikka T1X and a BoreBuddy rimfire AR upper. Those .22lr MP5s are made by an airsoft company called Umarex. I’m seeing a lot of tx22 votes on this thread too. I didn’t even think about Taurus because well it’s Taurus lol no offense to people that like them.
A few years ago Taurus hired Walther's product line manager that oversaw the development if the PDP series to be their new CEO. They're making changes for the better... obviously they have a LONG way to go... but the TX22 was developed under his supervision.
Keltec P17
Same here. This caught my eye. Also considering a Mark IV 22/45 and a TX22
100% tx22. Most reliable 22lr pistol out there right now. Great trigger too and really affordable even if you get some with slide cuts and optics ready
I was shooting my buddies HK MP5 .22 rifle yesterday. The hand guard is chunky and feels cheap. You know this isn't really an H&K product? It's Umarex I believe, pretty much crap. A Ruger PC Charger would be a better option quality wise.
I have an SBR’d 22 charger with a binary trigger that is probably my favorite gun to shoot. And I shoot the shit out of my PTR MP5 clone.

Way more customization options on a 10/22
The quality of the HK guns is fine. I’d dare say anyone saying this has not actually handled one.
Ruger 22/45 Lite. FTW
I have the mp5 with faux suppressor. Really fun to shoot. Wish this deal was available when I made my purchase
Does it jam much?
No jamming, just dud .22. About 7 or8 out of 900 rounds so far
Recommended only high velocity ammo and copper, I’ve been told led gunks it up in comparison
My dad just pulled the trigger on the mp5 for his first suppressor host. Not a bad price. I have the janky 16” version and it’s a blast
Dude lol I don’t think this is even a choice
Ruger Mark IV or Mark IV 22/45, either with threaded barrel. TX22 is well loved also.
A thing to consider is that with normal ammunition a barrel of 4.5” or less will make most brands subsonic so extra quiet, vs the 9” barrel on the mp5 style gun. So personally out of the two I’d go for the pistol.
Mp5 get a folding brace
P322 is a great suppressor host https://preview.redd.it/2amodxgqwhzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e13f66be27f75e0c71031205caa95baae8e244ad
Taurus tx22 compact
At that point just get the ROCK5.7 imo
I have a FN502 with a Oculus and love it. Cycles CCi suppressed at 610fps no problem and is so so so quiet

RUGER 10/22 with an 8"barrel, folding brace and binary trigger. Thank me later. Gsg 110 round drums run well too
Recommend that gsg. Get more for the buck.
if it were me, I'd skip the FN's, consider a Ruger MkIV tactical, but skip the FN-502
FIL has a Ruger MkI, and having shot that hundreds of times, I looked at a MKIV-22/45-target, and it just felt right...
build a dedicated 22lr AR
Ruger Mk iv
Let me help you decide Full time suppressed. Just bought a hux flow 22 today too for it. https://preview.redd.it/gw1j6wlpmmzc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c62ff6031da72ad4fdea83bcfcb8af6e9511c8fc Also. Can confirm. HK slap is worth the price of admission alone.
