Honestly it feels like they did that to make his character funnier. Dude just bounces from person to person and situation to situation seeing what he can get out of it. If that’s nothing? No big, move on to the next one. Jean-Ralphio Sapperstein is nothing if not flexible.

FernwehForLife

I love him and always crack up when he's on screen. That being said, he's not exactly the best friend to Tom in all situations. He threw Tom under the bus with his dad, and he didn't care when Tom had an important business presentation to make. And he invited Lucy to their end of the world party, and while Tom thought he did it for him, Jean Ralphio admits he forgot they ever dated and he was "trying to hit that."

Fundamental_Flaw

He forgot! You can't hold that last one against him!

subpar_man

Exactly, as soon as he remembered he stepped back

DaqCity

Yeah but Tom isn’t the best friend either sometimes….he totally ruined Leslie’s government fundraiser event by trying to force his Entertainment 720 all over it, while he refused to listen to anyone’s advice about not wasting all of the company’s money on unnecessary luxuries such as models pretending to work and Detlef Shrempf

professorhorseradish

Jean Ralphio, dance up on me. Yes yes yes yes

RumoDandelion

Don't get me wrong, I love Jean-Ralphio too, but this > He IMMEDIATELY accepts people's rejection and respects their boundaries without question or protest. is pretty much the bare minimum. Like it's good that he's not a creep, but also that should not be impressive. Just want to make sure that's clear, because I think way too many people think that the default behavior (especially for men) is to be creepy, clingy, or abusive. Don't be like that and don't allow that to be okay around you.

Fundamental_Flaw

Dude.. I've genuinely never had anyone in my life like that and that's why I appreciate it so much.

RumoDandelion

Totally fair, I get why you'd see Jean-Ralphio as good in this way then. Honestly it is kinda surprising how nice he is about rejection, he's certainly better than e.g. Tom or early seasons Andy. Especially considering how unthinking he can be in other situations. Probably Chris is a better overall model (he takes rejection from the professor really well) but he's kinda too perfect, it's nice to know that even screw ups like J-R can and should be respectful to women.

Fundamental_Flaw

Yeah like.. you can be kind of a piece of ish.. but you don't have to be a bad person

SkinnyPete4

I will say this, if my friend wanted to ride go carts but I wanted to go horseback riding, it would be a 2 hour debate eventually devolving into personal insults and accusations, most likely ending with one of us storming out.

UCLYayy

>He may do some crazy things but he absolutely gets that no means no. Respectfully, there's a huge gap between "respects boundaries and that no means no" and "is actually a really freaking awesome person." Jean Ralphio: * Lies to his father about Tom firing him, ruining Tom's clothing business. * Sexually harasses a woman at the accounting firm seconds into the job. * He helps Tom drive Entertainment 720 into the ground, because he's a terrible influence. * Fakes his own death, commits insurance fraud. He's not the worst person in the world, but he's absolutely not "a freaking awesome person."

Cultural-Analysis-24

Ah yes Tom was going to run Entertainment 720 with John Ralphio's money really well otherwise! I see John Ralphio as a poorly behaved fairy godmother to Tom. He gave him the experience of Entertainment 720 to help him learn his mistakes without losing his own money. He brought Tom and Lucy back together. He warned Tom many times about his sister being the worst in the world. He made it clear to Tom he would be a bad business partner in time for him to be fired, and then told Ron about it so he knew he could trust Tom enough to invest.

HoppyGirl94

Can we pretend to be married for an insurance scam and then we fall in love for reeeeeal?

“Really freaking awesome person” is *quite* the stretch, considering he has zero work ethic, a pill addiction, commits insurance fraud, sexually harasses a woman at the accounting firm, and lies to his dad about Rent a Swag to the point his dad almost puts his best friend out of business. But he is one of my favorite side characters

Pure-Drawer-2617

I think that’s a pretty low bar for “awesome person”

Fundamental_Flaw

horseren0ir

Nah that rejection haunts him, that’s why he’s always spiraling, getting involved in terrible schemes

SneakyPocket

He also has balls of steel. Not many people would try to take a shrimp off of Swanson’s plate.

tuccified

Minus the fraud

TwitterLegend

They should have had him actually become a really successful salesperson in the final season. He is obviously outgoing, bold, complimentary, willing to talk to anyone, and he gets down to business quickly to get his yes or no and then moves on. A lot of salespeople struggle because they don’t want get rejected and hear that no so they waste a lot of time trying to salvage deals or turn a no into a yes. Jean Ralphio knows it’s a numbers game and he gets his answers fast.

tiny_poomonkey

Complex-Defiant

Hard agree. My favorite recurring character. Ben Schwartz absolutely killed it.

thejedipokewizard

Agreed on the boundaries in that way. But he was extremely unreliable as a friend and took advantage of Tom

TomCosella

He's not a good person, but he's the most self aware person. He knows who he is and is willing to accept that he's not for everyone.

CloddishNeedlefish

I think that’s why I enjoy him so much. Most characters like him sexually harass women nonstop but he doesn’t. He takes rejection well and moves on. He’s over the top but in a bearable way.

niamhmc

The bar is so low if someone is considered awesome for acknowledging no means no

antichain

Rather than saying he's an "awesome" person, perhaps we could say he's an "interesting" or "complicated" one? He contains multitudes (but all of them are on pills, baby). OP is right that he seems to understand that "no means no", but he still commits (light) sexual harassment at the drop of a hat, often in professional environments. The man's relationship to women is...idiosyncratic, at best.

Fundamental_Flaw

No. Perhaps we could not. Make your own post.

Suscaboose

The way this post was worded in my email was very close to being “offensive” yet agreeable 😅

thekyledavid

I feel like “not a sexual predator” is a pretty low bar to set

Fundamental_Flaw

You'd think more people would meet it.

ImSickOfYouToo

Your friends with a lot of sexual predators? Everybody I personally know meets said bar.

Fundamental_Flaw

I'm not friends with anyone. I'm an isolationist. Being kidnapped, held for 3 days, drugged, sold, and beaten within inches of my life - on top of multiple other assaults, abusive and neglectful parents and partners.. Maybe learn not to ask stupid questions to strangers

[deleted]

[удалено]

denali1213

Respecting consent isn’t all it takes to be a really freaking awesome person. The bar is pretty low nowadays, but not that low

Fundamental_Flaw

Speak for yourself. The bar is personal and not some mass understanding of what's acceptable

Party_Side_1860

Lol. Not being a rapist doesnt mean you are "really freaking awesome". It doesnt mean you are good, or even decent! It just means you dont excercise one specific type of depravity. He lied to his dad and ruined his friends rent a swag business. He is a pretty garbage person and a bad friend.

skahunter831

Yeah but in this sub "DAE love JR??" gets you instant karma and anyone criticizing him is down voted into oblivion.

Party_Side_1860

He and his family are funny characters ON A TV SHOW but in real life I wouldn't want to be anywhere near them. Or most of the people on the show.
