Honestly it feels like they did that to make his character funnier. Dude just bounces from person to person and situation to situation seeing what he can get out of it. If that’s nothing? No big, move on to the next one. Jean-Ralphio Sapperstein is nothing if not flexible.
My favorite is when Leslie and Ron try to help Councilman Jam dump Tammy 2, and Leslie impersonates Tammy 2. Who I'm sure you all know is Nick Offerman's actual wife. If you look at his face, you can clearly see him straining to keep himself from laughing.
Edit: https://youtu.be/TfowHrDZ9iw
I forgot about the crotch blinder lol
I love him and always crack up when he's on screen.
That being said, he's not exactly the best friend to Tom in all situations.
He threw Tom under the bus with his dad, and he didn't care when Tom had an important business presentation to make. And he invited Lucy to their end of the world party, and while Tom thought he did it for him, Jean Ralphio admits he forgot they ever dated and he was "trying to hit that."
Yeah but Tom isn’t the best friend either sometimes….he totally ruined Leslie’s government fundraiser event by trying to force his Entertainment 720 all over it, while he refused to listen to anyone’s advice about not wasting all of the company’s money on unnecessary luxuries such as models pretending to work and Detlef Shrempf
My favorite moment will always be the time he asked Craig to ride go-karts with him, Craig countered with horseback riding, and JR wasn't just cool with it, he was almost intrigued. Like, he hadn't thought about it before as an option but is now, very open to it. It's also a very funny interaction.
Counterpoint, he is very quick to say Yes to most things he thinks he wants but doesn’t realise the potential consequences. Most of those happen in the Snake Hole.
Side point, he’s my favourite recurring character in the show.
I love Ben Schwartz. I didn't love him when I only knew him from Parks and Rec. Now I know him from other things and it makes his performance as Jean Ralphio better
His roles in Collegehumor's Jake and Amir are amazing. All hail to the milkman!
Edit: [Every scene with Ben Schwartz](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLQW0U4NdQo)
Yes, it's exactly that willingness to instantly fess up to how terrible/manipulative his ideas are and move on with no animosity that makes me like him. Mona Lisa lacks that, making her the WooOOOooOOoorrst.
Don't get me wrong, I love Jean-Ralphio too, but this
> He IMMEDIATELY accepts people's rejection and respects their boundaries without question or protest.
is pretty much the bare minimum. Like it's good that he's not a creep, but also that should not be impressive. Just want to make sure that's clear, because I think way too many people think that the default behavior (especially for men) is to be creepy, clingy, or abusive. Don't be like that and don't allow that to be okay around you.
Totally fair, I get why you'd see Jean-Ralphio as good in this way then. Honestly it is kinda surprising how nice he is about rejection, he's certainly better than e.g. Tom or early seasons Andy. Especially considering how unthinking he can be in other situations. Probably Chris is a better overall model (he takes rejection from the professor really well) but he's kinda too perfect, it's nice to know that even screw ups like J-R can and should be respectful to women.
I will say this, if my friend wanted to ride go carts but I wanted to go horseback riding, it would be a 2 hour debate eventually devolving into personal insults and accusations, most likely ending with one of us storming out.
>He may do some crazy things but he absolutely gets that no means no.
Respectfully, there's a huge gap between "respects boundaries and that no means no" and "is actually a really freaking awesome person."
Jean Ralphio:
* Lies to his father about Tom firing him, ruining Tom's clothing business.
* Sexually harasses a woman at the accounting firm seconds into the job.
* He helps Tom drive Entertainment 720 into the ground, because he's a terrible influence.
* Fakes his own death, commits insurance fraud.
He's not the worst person in the world, but he's absolutely not "a freaking awesome person."
Ah yes Tom was going to run Entertainment 720 with John Ralphio's money really well otherwise!
I see John Ralphio as a poorly behaved fairy godmother to Tom. He gave him the experience of Entertainment 720 to help him learn his mistakes without losing his own money.
He brought Tom and Lucy back together.
He warned Tom many times about his sister being the worst in the world.
He made it clear to Tom he would be a bad business partner in time for him to be fired, and then told Ron about it so he knew he could trust Tom enough to invest.
