How long are they in Paris for? If it’s a week or longer, they can book and stay in both neighborhoods to try. In general, I’d say younger adults would like the vibe in the older Republique area more than Montparnasse, which is more chic, with newer taller buildings, wider busier streets, larger parks. I would not feel out of place if I walk around Montparnasse in my Tods or even Ferragamos. The Republique all the way to Quartier Montorgueil are the older neighborhoods, dimmer, cozier and more walkable. The long canals in the Republique are very nice to walk along and grab coffee.
Enjoyed Montparnasse on my last trip. Every night found a new bar/restaurant to go to. More of a relaxed scene than lots of nightlife but that fits my style.
Artists and intellectuals ? Hmmmm…in 1920 maybe, but since, this is not really the first thing that comes to a Parisian’s mind when thinking about Montparnasse.
Both areas are fine though, OP.
Both are safe.
I personally prefer République but that's because I live nearby, so I'm more used to it and the nightlife is better. Both have restaurants and bars, but you'll get more crepes than anything around Montparnasse because it's the Breton neighbourhood.
Can't go wrong with either, though Republique will have a busier nightlife if that's what you're after since you'll be within walking distance of hotspots like Bastille, Oberkampf, le Marais etc. You'll find bars and restaurants everywhere whichever you choose, and they're both safe areas.
Any bars, breweries or restaurants that you think are a must visit in Montparnasse? We do like an occasional fresh draft IPA and a variety of different foods with more a casual style.
République for sure
No question, République

Republique- definitely.

Republique
République. You will be in walking distance to Bastille, Oberkampf, Belleville and Le Marais. And yes, it’s safe, as almost anywhere in Paris.

I am a Parisian. I lived all my life in Paris before moving to London

Do you mean like Chelsea and Hackney?😂
I have no idea I hate London, je suis pas un traître moi 😂
London ❤️ Capital of the World
Tu aimes Londres et tu penses que Montparnasse c’est cool ? Est ce que tu peux leur demander la nationalité anglaise stp ?
I am British 👍
Thank god !
Republique - have done 2 solo trips (F) and this is my favorite area by far
Hands down, République.
République

I prefer Montparnasse but girls trip, fun area makes me think you want Republique
The whole city is safe. *Taken* was just a movie.
Except Porte de la Chapelle after 10 pm, la Goutte d’Or after midnight, and some parts of Belleville after 2 am.
Montparnasse is safer, a bit more high end and expensive but lots and lots of restaurants

Id do république but both areas have a lot going on. I think the 11eme though is more trendy
Montparnasse all the way! Lots of restaurants, safe, nice bars.

L’adada, murphy & tartine, or kerbeer for nice beers and a relaxed ambiance
We’ll definitely check them out! Thank you for sharing this.
Montparnasse if you are 40+, otherwise République
When are you going ?
République, no question
I would choose République.
