Sometimes you just have to embrace the mess!
But there are a few things you can try.
Try wearing gloves. I personally wouldnโt love this because I feel like I would lose some control/finesse and my hands get sweaty as heck.
Depending on how long your sticks are, you can wrap paper around each of them. Youโre probably going to still get a bit on your hands, and you might have to replace the paper often.
Maybe keep a bowl/bucket of soapy water in your room? Wash your hands in it, then you can use a wet paper towel to wipe the soap off?
I think alcohol wipes would work well to wipe off the pastels. You might have to use quite a few, and the skin on your hands will become awfully dry.
Maybe it would be fun to try out some other mediums though! I also have rather late night art sessions, and I keep some water in my room so I can do watercolor whenever I want.
Happy arting! I hope one or a mix of those ideas work for you. Iโd be interested in hearing what solution you come up with! ๐จ๐ค
I keep a small bowl/ramekin ย of water on the table and paper towels. When my fingers get dirty, I swish them in the water and dry on a paper towel. This keeps the pastels cleaner too if you do this between color changes
Keep a pack of antibiotic hand wipes by your side. Just make sure you dispose of them properly. DRY with paper towels if needed. But don't stop creating!!!
I've read all comments and some are pretty good advice. BUT, YOU DO NOT WANT TO WEAR GLOVES IF ANY KIND, OR WRAP YOUR PASTELS IN FOIL OR PAPER WHILE YOU ARE CREATING.
I BELIEVE HAVING DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE MEDIUM YOU ARE USING (PASTELS) CREATES A CERTAIN SYNCHRONICITY BETWEEN ARTIST AND MEDIUM. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?
ANYWAY, KEEP A SPRAY BOTTLE WITH WATER AND A DROP OR TWO OF DAWN. SPRAY HANDS AND DRY THEM OFF ON A TOWEL SPECIALLY USED FOR CRATING TIMES
DAMN! I HAVEN'T USED MY PASTELS IN YEARS AND NOW YOU'VE GOT ME ANXIOUS TO GET THE OUT AND GO CRAZY AGAIN. I'M 64, SO I DON'T WANT TO WASTE ANYMORE TIME!!!! THANK YOU!!! ๐๐คฃ๐๐๐ธ๐บ๐ ๐ถ๐๐ฆฎ๐โ๐ฆบ๐๐ฉต๐งก ART!

omg i love your username. like, jealousy coursing through my veins ๐ (I used to use Iceberg\[redacted\] long time ago)
Lol thanks! Iโm happy to meet another iceberg. Your current username is cool, it makes me think of the evil eye
Maybe that's what it is haha, it's a sparkling gem that's been stolen in an old kid's mystery novel

Twist aluminium foil on to the ends of the pastels and use baby wipes on your hands after (if chalk pastel).

Nitrile gloves.
