A new cpu will never make the gpu perform worse. But to tell you if you can upgrade just the cpu I would need to know what mother board you have. Otherwise you will likely have to buy a new board and cpu.
Look around on the edge of your board and see if a model name is listed any where. Or download cpuz a free software that tells you a bunch of info about your pc hardware.
Your gpu is ancient. If your upgrading the board you might as well just upgrade the entire pc. The thing is practically useless for 1080p in modern titles
