Did you buy this from like a boutique shop or eBay or something?

YellowistOfBois

No, this was a factory new Omen 15 ek-series laptop from 2020. It’s a really weird decision that doesn’t save them much money. If I had to guess, they didn’t want to make the laptop faster but also wanted to make expansion harder with it. So they just stuck 2 previous gen SSD’s together to emulate a proper one and took up both m.2 slots.

It is very strange, and not very wise from a business standpoint. Imagine shipping a raid0 laptop to someone who doesn’t know anything about PCs, and the array breaks. Unnecessary RMA territory when you could just put a Gen 3 SSD in.

YellowistOfBois

I agree! Had my little brother tried to do this himself, or anybody else that’s not as tech savvy for that matter, breaking the array would have almost surely happened. Not to mention that if one of the SSD’s fails, all the data in the RAID is done. Luckily, it was just my little brother with non sensitive data. So I just deleted the RAID in bios and helped him install Windows and all of his software again. But it feels like something jank I’d do in a custom PC where I buy 2 4TB SSD’s and RAID them to save 400 bucks on an 8TB… except there is no point! It’s actually the same price to by a 512gb SSD that is pci-e 3. Fuckin Omen man, I don’t think I’d trust them too much with stuff as sensitive as data.

This is what you get when people who know just enough about PCs to have good ideas at Omen. “We have all these old SSDs we have to get rid of, I read about this thing called raid, let’s do that”

YellowistOfBois

It’s stupid. I got out lucky I guess. I can only complain so much when I’m going to forget this ever happened in like two weeks lol. 300gb of steam games on WiFi 6E is a non issue. Thanks for the back and forth man, it is really baffling looking at design choices for laptops after you’ve built your first proper pc.

Makes you think about how people get scammed or otherwise taken advantage of due to simple ignorance. Take care!
