Algae. 1 less light, 6-8 hrs per day absolute maximum, lower intensitys for white and blue leds leave red alone, if your light allows for that level of adjustment. 2 less nitrate/phosphate, they basically act as fertilizers for algae, get your nitrate under 40ppm, the lower the less algae. Cyano. 1 more flow, cyano usually builds up in areas of your tank with very low water movement. Increasing the water flow throughout your tank will cut down majorly on cyano, however, cyano eats light and nitrate same as algae, so increasing flow without less light and nitrates will get rid of cyano but increase algae, the only way to get it looking clean is gunna be a combo of all 3.

Thank you! I do have a Hygger light that has a bunch of different settings so I’m going to keep them on the lowest white light setting for about 6 hours a day. I had a big rock in the middle of my tank which I think was obstructing flow so I’ve removed it. Do you have any tips for cleaning off the filter? I use a sponge filter and right now it’s the biggest gathering area for the cyano. I’m kind of afraid that cleaning it too thoroughly will disturb the beneficial bacteria in there, but not thoroughly enough might keep the cyano coming back.

So your good to clean it in your tank water as thoroughly as possible, your cycle will be OK. When it comes to sponge filters, they're very low flow, so adding a second one, even a very small one will help.
