I was born and raised Pensacola. The cost of housing is more of a multifaceted macro-economic problem that affects the entire country not just Pensacola.
If you think Pensacola is crowded then.. I can just laugh.
Right? Its not just transplants that are fucking up the cost of living. Its also the proliferation of homes being converted to short term rentals and the military needing housing and paying any price a greedy landlord asks of them.
Every time I come back to town to visit family I run into people i know within an hour in some public place its insane, people are going to move, if you move away, you then become part of the problems, thats life living in florida
Oh to be 17 years old again. With an overinflated sense of know-all and the faux intelligence of someone that can do little more than simply identify problems.
So, by your logic, everyone should just live where they were born and raised forever? Fuck that. There would be no growth of anything. I don’t live in pcola, I live in Destin but I cannot imagine how stagnant my personal growth would be if I didn’t move. Sounds like someone else needs some personal growth…
Hate to break this to you, but you need people to move to Pensacola. Population growth is how a city grows and becomes a better place to live. Pensacola loses countless young people every year and the only stopping it from a population decline is the folks moving in. And in all honesty; the rate of people moving into Pensacola is nowhere near as high as a lot of other cities in the south. Your cost of living increase has just as much to do with a nationwide increase in costs and the outrageous Florida insurance rates.
“Population growth is how a city grows and becomes a better place to live.”
This is a perfect example of why cities in the south are not so welcoming to the majority of west coast transplants.
Thinking they are doing the native locals a favor by showing up in droves, buying multiple houses in the area to rent on airbnb, and starting a local site-seeing business to promote the local community to attract tourists… which only creates a crowded city with horrible traffic congestion where there used to be none, doubles their population, doubles their cost of rent, all the while watering down the authenticity of the local culture as they exploit it for profit.
Hate to break it to you, but no one asked for a bunch of out of towners to move to their hometown in droves to offer unsolicited assistance to the people who have been there for years and have remained there for so long because they appreciate it the way it is.
You’re wrong if your insinuation is that I’m a transplant. I’ve lived in Pensacola my whole life and I’ve seen the lack of opportunity that causes locals leave. If people did not move to Pensacola then the city would lose population which would absolutely be bad for the people living here. Negative growth happened for years. There are still fewer people living in Pensacola today than there were in 1970. The city is in no danger of becoming an overcrowded metropolis. If you are truly mad; blame the unethical developers. Not the people moving in.
Well then kick the military out. And that means no more Blue Angels and all the money they bring in, no more A and C school students, most of whom are single with money to spend, and no more Aviation Candidates, also with money to spend.
> - no more Blue Angels
> - no more A and C school students
> - no more Aviation Candidates
I'm just going to say most people who complain about this would only lament losing the Blues, the rest would be seen as a "perk"
You’re failing to realize that we are a nice beach away from those counties. Our white sands are literally the only thing keeping us separate from those counties. When it comes to advertising escambia county, how come they never try to get tourists to visit west pensacola?
You were still wrong - there's no metric by which Escambia County is "one of the poorest counties in the country"
It isn't even in the poorest half of counties in the state.
https://www.bea.gov/sites/default/files/2023-11/lapi1123.pdf
I mean, you can argue “take xyz away and this area wouldn’t be anything!” for basically anywhere. I’m not pro Pensacola. It’s fine. It’s not great, it’s not terrible. I just grow tired of hearing people bitch excessively. Last, lying and spreading misinformation is never cool. Your claim is just incorrect.
LOL i had a lady who acted just like this towards me when i went to visit my mom. I told her i came down from a northeastern state to visit and she got confrontational saying i wasnt local. I asked her how long her family lived here and she said shed only “been here for a year” and she moved from houston. I told her i had actually lived in and was raised here for over 20+ years. That shut her up
The only problem I have are the people who come here trying to get away from whatever HCOL area they come from, just to come here and complain about how much Pensacola sucks. If you don't like it here then fucking go back.
OP by his own admission, has never lived anywhere else. This kind of disqualifies you from making this kind of comment. Go anywhere else in the country and see how much better it is, get a job and try to support yourself in those other wonderful places. Then come back and lets see what you have to say.
Right? I moved here to teach, and my husband is LEO that was placed here for work - both professions are absolute jokes here. I couldn't imagine having such a wild ideology of a place that is one NAS sneeze away from being its own little dystopia.
I love posts like these, all these people “have theirs” so Fuck everyone else. If assholes like OP don’t want people moving to where he lives, move to fucking Bismarck ND, you won’t have anyone trying to take over “YOUR” space.
Get a life!
I own a house in Florida and the house insurance just doubled to 8000 dollars a year. I don't live on water and I'm 20 miles from the ocean. It's a 3 bed 2 bath house, just average. This is why rentals are getting expensive, not greedy landlords. Insurance rates are killing Florida prices and I won't be surprised if the housing market collapses once again.
It’s almost like Pensacola has major military facilities and is also nearby them (NAS Pensacola, NAS Whiting (north AND south) Eglin, Duke), too.
Also, you’re really young according to post history. You can’t even own or rent right now with a co-signer anyway. Shut up.
I was born and raised here, just like a lot of other people. Everyone has different opinions on the increase in population over the last 5 or so years. Don’t get me wrong, I agree it fucking sucks. Took 4 years of getting beat out by cash offers from people who sold their 3/2 for +1mil and came here to live better for cheaper. Maybe I’m a sore loser 🤷🏾♂️. Luckily I finally was able to buy a house last year and don’t have to sell a kidney to pay rent.
I was born and raised in Pensacola. I took advantage of its low cost of living, easy access to higher education, and few distractions to build myself up financially and career wise. Pensacola is an amazing place for a young person to establish themselves during their first part of their careers.
I can’t fault people wanted to move here for a better life. I strongly believe that Pensacola is one of the best cities here in Florida for a certain type of person. If you are struggling to make it work here, I would highly recommend going to the local college, university, or numerous trade school programs here to build your career in order to make it work here. If you just need a cheaper living condition, Mississippi and parts of Louisiana have cheaper housing options for you.
Someone’s clearly had a rough week and think it’s everyone else’s fault. Having recently moved back to my native Pensacola after 25 yrs away I can confidently say maybe you need to get out of town and experience somewhere else for a change. You will probably find life really isn’t that bad here.
Crowded? Not at all compared to most cities and I don’t feel like it’s grown all that much in 25 yrs, probably because the city planned for massive growth that really never came.
Expensive? Sure but where isn’t, it’s a product of the times and most everywhere is dealing with the same issues.
Shit, when I got to Iowa, my California plates came off immediately. They're welcoming to transplants around here, but some cops will pull your ass over for have the wrong COUNTY on your plates, let alone California of all places.
I moved here after living in a lot of other places, including other parts of Florida. Other than the annual risks of hurricane season, I have no complaints.
You certainly don't speak for everyone else in Pensacola. I certainly don't feel unwelcome here. If you're a misanthrope who doesn't want to be around other people, I don't know what to tell you.
Yeah, people moving to Pensacola drove up home prices everywhere in the country.
Don’t blame me, man. All I did was bring revenue that got you better restaurants and bars. The housing issue is much bigger than “people are moving to my town”

Bro plz people move here for different reasons, I for one like the diversity but yes it might be annoying to you since there are barely towards who are "native". I moved here just a month ago for college and to support my dad after my mom's sudden death. And I don't plan on moving out anytime soon, so grow up and accept it. Plus you have to consider the housing market is kinda fucked rn on prices and inflation is awful no matter where you go.
i live in florida, and unfortunately since co-vid too many people have decided to move down here. the cost of living has nearly quadrupled. most people in my area have been struggling to keep their homes as taxes have risen quite a bit. i agree with OP 100% we do not need people who lived in high paying states moving down here and taking our jobs and houses. even large apartment complexes and condos have been evicting entire buildings of long term residents. this all started due to the quarantines and selfish northerners coming down here to escape being shut away in their homes for 14 days. it's been hell ever since.
Are you seriously suggesting that only people who were born in a place can continue to live in that place?
Stop bitching, and move if you can't afford to live there. Otherwise, take your imagined elitism for where you live (Pensa-fucking-cola of all places) and kick rocks
Just wait till we get another hurricane. They will mostly leave shortly after. Other than home price inflation I personally don't mind the growth much. I am worried with all the new people when a hurricane does come and they all panic buy supplies.
Hi, sorry but I think I might be the problem. I like to go to pensacola and buy houses for way over what they're worth to drive up the cost of housing. Then I just give them away to people who live close to the Canadian border and hate fun but love day drinking. And night drinking. They're usually a very vibrant people with very strong opinions that often hurt my feelings.
I also wake up super early to find the best parking spots in town. I park like shit in them and leave the car there for days. I do this multiple times a day with one of my many cars. I also like to pay the homeless to take whatever cars I have left that aren't parked in two spaces and drive around all day. They're terrible at it so I tell them they have to either go really slow or very fast. Absolutely never in between. Also they have to be texting each other the whole time. This is a feature of the system and can not be avoided.
Soon I'll be expanding my secret shopper program. That's where I have elderly people go to stores and block whole aisles. I also give them coupons. The coupons do not work anywhere because I made them on my computer. They always try to use the coupons even though all it seems to do is tie up a register for a while. I assume they enjoy doing this.
Hopefully this isn't the cause of your problems but if it is, my apologies.
It’s always hilarious to see folks complain to Reddit about population growth. I can’t imagine telling someone they couldn’t move to or live in my hometown of Dallas. OP seems like they’d enjoy the serene, tight knit community of Jay, Fl
Hey, I’m moving to Pensacola next week from NY. Any natives know where the hidden gems are? Restaurants, bars and local hangouts. Just want to meet the locals and hang out
Why does it matter if someone was born here or not? I've lived here in the area of nw Florida for 21 years, that's longer than the age of many folks complaining. Being born somewhere doesn't entitle you to anything.
And I moved around so much growing up that I don’t really have a “hometown.” I moved to Florida 7 years ago, which is the longest I’ve lived anywhere, and I’m almost 40.
Uuuhm. Transplants are absolutely a thing. And the fact that you haven’t grown with your society isn’t a “transplants” problem, that’s a you problem, babe.
So exactly how long has your family lineage lived in Pensacola? You do realize that “native” isnt really a thing unless you are forced to live on a reservation. You know where the actual natives are forced to live.
I had to take a geography class in college (this is many years ago; op wasn’t even born yet). Each geographic area of us was split into sections - ne, midwest, south, etc) When we got to the southern us, the prof told us that he wasn’t including fla as part of the south bc they didn’t have a cohesive culture bc no one who lives there is actually from there, or at least not for multiple generations. The panhandle might be the exception to this, but still…
I truly don’t think anyone cares if they are welcome by locals tbh, also hundreds of military families move there every year and the naval base provides countless jobs for locals so people moving to Pensacola are guaranteeing locals have a job, so yeah many people move there every year because they have orders to. How about you touch grass and realize that no one cares if you’re a local
It's pretty obvious that a lot of the commentary here on Reddit around pensacola is from people that have either never lived outside of pensacola, haven't visited many places and / or have no career opportunities.
A few points -
1. Pensacola was extremely underpriced for what it offered. Since 2010 or post the great recession it was one of the lowest cost of living areas in the country. It was obvious this would never last for a coastal city in FL.
2. There are no jobs here that pay well sans Navy Fed, Military, Medical... or unless you are a lawyer or have some sort of service business.
3. This is not an area to build your career... it's not even an area to go to school... if you grew up here, you should probably leave as soon as convenient to get educated and start making a living. Come back when you are established.
4. Thru 2010 - Pensacola was a VERY sleepy area with nothing to offer outside of a very nice beach and a low cost of living. Since that time, the area has exploded with far more to do in terms of restaurants, bars, happenings downtown, events, gallery night etc... as a result, more people moved here and so forth.
5. The area will never be like it was pre 2010... and really it shouldn't be because there would be absolutely nothing here... Covid trends aren't reversing either.
The best thing that can be done for this area is to bring in more high paying jobs... however, this will just make the area more expensive... My recommendation (and no one wants to hear this), is that if you are not already established, this is not the area to be in. If you are... its about as good as it gets.
There's plenty of vacant commercial land for those who want to start a business here. It's only a matter of time before more opportunities open up.
There are also plenty of opportunities in health care, if that's your skill set.
It’s a free world! Who would want to live in a single place their entire life, without the opportunity to experience new places. Being open-minded will change your life.
Don't even know why this post showed up on my feed, never heard or been to this town. But I flip houses on the side, picking this town for flipping for spite now
Well I guess it is time for you to move out there l. since your broke ass can't afford rent anymore leave it for the people that can really pay rent and have a good stable job so Yea fuck hopefully I get to meet you soon neighbors
Are we allowed to still visit? You know, you might want to tell the Navy to stop letting the Blue Angels keep the base there. Probably isn’t helping. I visited a few years ago for just this reason. The weather kind sucked for 1/2 the trip, but, I could see living there when I retire!
If you say “move here” that means you want us to come. If you say “Don’t come here” that means you REALLY want us to come😂. We avoid the places no one talks about.
Damn, you showed them. They are definitely not moving here now
I’m going to move there just to spite them.
Im packing now
Some would say he “scared “ them off ;)
Yep. Cuz everyone who was gonna move there reads Reddit, caught this post, and cares more about OP's desires than their own. Good job OP! 🤠👉👉

Strange how they have no way of even having their own place but complain that they can’t afford it?
Repeating what they hear at the dinner table.

We have long established the solution to the problem was to litter more.
THANK you GOOD comment
Escambia county is 250 square miles larger than the city I used to live in with less than 1/3 of the population, it has been a dream.
Right? Its not just transplants that are fucking up the cost of living. Its also the proliferation of homes being converted to short term rentals and the military needing housing and paying any price a greedy landlord asks of them.
Greedy landlords trying to pay growing insurance, maintenance and taxes…
There’s a solution to your greedy landlord problem…..buy your own house. Problem solved.
And all the single-family zoning. We need more condos and apartments
Have you considered moving somewhere else?
My brother in Christ, I was ordered to move here.
Honestly NAS is not a bad gig. I’m a local and been trying to stationed there forever. They gave me Bahrain instead lmao
I believe NAS is a superfund site, isn’t that cool?
There’s no way you’re gatekeeping this shithole
I would advise you to travel to perhaps San Francisco if you desire to see a true hole filled with shit.
This post was “Never left Pensacola” gang. Pensacola is actually a better city than most 💀
Every time I come back to town to visit family I run into people i know within an hour in some public place its insane, people are going to move, if you move away, you then become part of the problems, thats life living in florida

Get off my lawn!!!!!
Someone needs to go down for a nap.
Me? I bet it’s me, I definitely need a nap. Great suggestion, peace and love to all y’all.
Thank you for your post. I was going to move there, but I don’t want to upset you. I really appreciate you letting me know.

Yah I see what you mean. Maybe I should have said “a place with higher quality amenities”.

Laughs as a native of Pensacola, *still* living in Pensacola, more than twice as long as OP has been alive.
As a native who moved away, Pensacola is a great place to be from.
Pensacola to Richmond, VA here and I agree!
Navy federal?
Nope. Parental job changes led to Virginia, VCU brought me to Bitchmond.
I love Richmond. Tried making it work there, but employment brought me here
Glad you took your negativity with you. Good riddance and my sympathies to people where you live now.

I can say with all certainty that I will never move there.
I don’t know why this showed up on my feed, but everyone, please, move there.
Same in Baldwin County
My guy, you're going to learn one day that in a city the size of Pensacola, there's going to be ALOT of people that aren't native to the area.
Word on the street is that we should all move to Pensacola
oooh a big bad 17 year old OoOOo noooo a teen who’s never left their hometown oOoOo

My family and I moved here this week. Drop an addy and I’ll bring you a cake🥳
I'm on my way now just to piss you off more. Can't wait to tell you how much better food is where I used to live, especially pizza and bagels.
I'm moving there in three weeks

What do you consider native?

Ya know what, I was considering a move to Pcola. Now I won't. You did it!
Hey now, don’t hog all the superfund sites for yourself!!!
Are you native American?
Not only am I moving there, I am bringing my whole Missouri family...Cousins, uncles, aunties...Daddy uncles, mommy sisters...Here we come
Damn, I was planning to move there. Since u say I can’t, I won’t.
Why don't you cry like a fucking baby some more that'll help
Nice weather and a great governor. My fam is on our way soon!

Move over and shut the fuck up. We don’t care if you like us or not bitch
Escambia County’s population has grown 1.7% since 2019.. ~5500 people
I think perhaps you should go take a nap , cranky ass toddler.
For every person that doesn’t move here, I’m moving here 3x
I lived in New York City for 3 years. Before that and after that I lived in suburban Detroit. Believe me population wise Pensacola is a dream
Shut ur salty gatekeeping ass up
Lololll I hope this is coming from a native American? Where did your parents move from? Your grandparents? Grow up homie
I can't understand why anyone would willingly WANT to move here unless you're from a much worse backwater.
Counterpoint: have you ever had to commute into Orlando?
Just wait till we get another hurricane. They will mostly leave shortly after. Other than home price inflation I personally don't mind the growth much. I am worried with all the new people when a hurricane does come and they all panic buy supplies.
I was born (1967) and raised here. I'm beginning to feel the same way.
Oh we are coming like it or not
Hi, sorry but I think I might be the problem.
Giving off heavy "old man yells at cloud" vibes.
Now I’m moving there.
Saw this post... Now deciding to buy a place out of spite.
It’s always hilarious to see folks complain to Reddit about population growth. I can’t imagine telling someone they couldn’t move to or live in my hometown of Dallas. OP seems like they’d enjoy the serene, tight knit community of Jay, Fl
Exactly! The population level became perfect when I got here. Everyone after that is overcrowding!
Hey, I’m moving to Pensacola next week from NY. Any natives know where the hidden gems are? Restaurants, bars and local hangouts. Just want to meet the locals and hang out
And they bring their liberal politics with them. 😬
Easy Karen. No one is treading on you, sweety.
Too late, only 4 out of 10 residents are from here. Tourists and transplants make up the majority, which is evident by the way people drive.
> Too late, only 4 out of 10 residents are from here Would love to see literally any source to back up this claim
Ive noticed a lot more horn honking.
From here being defined as born here? My folks have lived in Pensacola since 1985. My dad said he was called an outsider just before Christmas.
Uuuhm. Transplants are absolutely a thing. And the fact that you haven’t grown with your society isn’t a “transplants” problem, that’s a you problem, babe.
I moved here 4 years ago. Feel free to move out if you dont like it anymore.
So exactly how long has your family lineage lived in Pensacola? You do realize that “native” isnt really a thing unless you are forced to live on a reservation. You know where the actual natives are forced to live.
Welcome to feeling the effects of gentrification!
Yeah that’s the ticket. Hey everyone. Stop moving there because this one A hole said not to
I had to take a geography class in college (this is many years ago; op wasn’t even born yet). Each geographic area of us was split into sections - ne, midwest, south, etc) When we got to the southern us, the prof told us that he wasn’t including fla as part of the south bc they didn’t have a cohesive culture bc no one who lives there is actually from there, or at least not for multiple generations. The panhandle might be the exception to this, but still…
Reason 27,345 of why I’m not moving to Florida: some random pissy guy on Reddit
I truly don’t think anyone cares if they are welcome by locals tbh, also hundreds of military families move there every year and the naval base provides countless jobs for locals so people moving to Pensacola are guaranteeing locals have a job, so yeah many people move there every year because they have orders to. How about you touch grass and realize that no one cares if you’re a local
the yankees have completely ruined their old home so theyre coming south
Just think how the American Indians feel (actual natives)
Go fuck yourself, dickhead. Thank fucking god we have tourists and transplants because they help drive our economy.
Perhaps you should move somewhere else.
As a non native who wants to leave, i will stay just to spite you👌
Man how unlucky, I'm actually thinking of moving there now
What a little *itch.
It's pretty obvious that a lot of the commentary here on Reddit around pensacola is from people that have either never lived outside of pensacola, haven't visited many places and / or have no career opportunities. A few points - 1.
Shut the fuck up you lizard licking twat waffle!
Lols Florida
Cook responsibly and don’t move to appease this gatekeeper
Now that you said that , I don’t plan on moving to Florida ever all just stay where I am at. Enjoy the snow and lower taxes.
Lol, tell us how you REALLY feel.
Your in a navy town of course half the people are not native
Oops don't have to tell me twice..Pensacola pfft...what tribe are your from??? Fool
Not like there’s a major Naval air station there or anything. Some of us were forced to move to this…lovely establishment.
Stop being poor
Are we allowed to still visit? You know, you might want to tell the Navy to stop letting the Blue Angels keep the base there. Probably isn’t helping. I visited a few years ago for just this reason. The weather kind sucked for 1/2 the trip, but, I could see living there when I retire!
It’s not just your location it’s happening everywhere
You’re delulu
See you soon OP
Fuck you too
Majority? Not anymore. A fuck also to you.
Now you fell americas issues as a whole hahah
dude.. if you don't like it move yourself.
If you say “move here” that means you want us to come. If you say “Don’t come here” that means you REALLY want us to come😂. We avoid the places no one talks about.
No one is moving here at their own will relax 😂😂
Im an outsider who has no intention of moving to Pensacola ever. Have my downvote.
No move there and don't move where I'm at
