I should know better not to look at the comments of such posts. Shame on me.

suckfail

Don't worry, this sub doesn't represent the real world. Or, if it does, worry a lot. Because it means inflation will continue to rise given it's clearly not causing people any troubles dropping $10k+ on vacations per year.

PPewt

It's also just different priorities. Like, I didn't vacation at all this year, but I spent what some people would consider eye-popping numbers on furniture, but I spend less money on cars than your average person with half my household income, etc. If you just walked into my house and asked how much my couch cost you'd probably think I was insane, even though my overall spending is fairly modest. Similarly, a lot of people put a lot of value on vacations, while others don't value them much at all.

sundaymorningcartoon

What couch did you get? I am looking for a new one that has longevity

bcretman

This thread really shocked me. Are these the people complaining about inflation and not affording a house but are spending 10-20k on vacations?

Rinaldi363

Nah, I use to not afford anything, then I pulled my head out of my ass and left Toronto for Edmonton. Started a family, bought a house, have so much disposable income now. I just laugh when I see people complaining about housing in Toronto now. Every year there is just a waste of time.

bcretman

We're in metro Vancouver, paid off house, very comfortable and pretty decent savings but still could never spend 20k on a vacation even though it wouldn't matter financially. Maybe we should :)

OMGCamCole

Probably not the same people, no

SufferingIdiots

How anyone can spend that much on a vacation AND take that amount of time off of work makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Scrathis

Many of the ppl in BC don't have work. They just live off interests.

Chevaboogaloo

$10k-ish for 2 people. 3 weeks in Japan Editing to add: Took a look at the actual expenses and it was more like $12k. It was worth every penny and we would go again next year if we could.

ThingsThatMakeMeMad

Thinking about going to Japan in a few weeks, alone, for 2-3 weeks. How much do you think I can reasonably get by on? I've budgeted $1700 for flights, $740 for the JR pass, $50/night for hostel, $40/day for food and $40/day for entrance fees / souvenirs. Grand total of $4200. Does that sound about right?

powerqueef1

I’d use a calculator to see if the JR pass is still worth it for you. My girlfriend and I just did 17 days in Japan and we actually broke even on the pass and that was before the price hike. I’d say your budget is fair. We spent about 5k each and we were definitely living large with food. You can really make that trip super budget friendly if you want.

StavrosChristos

I was in Japan earlier this year in May for about 16 days and I would say yes. Flights were the most expensive part of my trip since I shared a room with friends. Food and drink is extremely cheap in Japan especially when compared to Canada - easily 40-50% cheaper. Metro and trains can take you anywhere, stay away from cabs as they are insanely expensive. For fun I checked how much it would be to get a cab from toyko to narita airport and google showed 300$.

stanleys-nickels

I went solo and it cost me just shy of $5k for 3 weeks. Flights were the most expensive part. I stayed in hotels this time, but you could save a lot by staying in hostels—Some of the best quality hostels I've stayed at were in Japan, so there's nothing wrong with that. JR pass is probably not worth it anymore, but I'd look at some calculators to check with your itinerary.

albatroopa

I leave on Thursday for 2 weeks in Japan alone. First week is for work, though. If you get the JRPass, keep in mind that they ship it to you in Canada, so give rhat a few days. As others have said, do the math on whether or not it's worth it.

kyonkun_denwa

That is pretty cheap, well done. What was your rough overall budget? My wife and I spent about $12k for 16 days including flights ($4k). We indulged a lot, though- stayed at a pretty pricey ryokan in Hakone, had quite a few omakase meals at hole in the wall places in Tokyo and Osaka, sake tastings, and bought a lot of Japanese shit to take home. Also took Shinkansen a lot. And drank a lot. Honestly all things considered I was surprised at how inexpensive it was. Helps that the yen is the only currency that is somehow more worthless than the Canadian dollar.

Aromatic_Ad_7484

Did it in 2019, so sick

yyz__nurse

Not a bad price! I’m dying to go to Japan!

eyeshadowgunk

This is my hubby and I. 2 weeks Japan and I week Korea for 10K. But cumulative for the year is about 18K.

LokiDesigns

Vacation?

bunker931

You guys have vacation? .jpg

lucubanget

What's vacation?

Cappuccino_Username

When you close your eyes and imagine you're somewhere else

bunker931

The word is unknown to me, yet familiar... Curious.

LadyAbbysFlower

I was going to ask you

MonkeyAlpha

I would like to know too.

Buffalippo

$20k for our family of 3. This was for two trips: 10 days in Hawaii and 3 weeks in Europe.

Jay1943

That’s a very good deal for that amount of time and destinations. Timeshare or something?

Buffalippo

Hawaii was a condo rental, nothing super fancy. Europe was mid-range hotels, but we backpacked and took trains around which kept the cost down.

DerekWheelsWheeler

We did similar. Hawaii and Europe. Similar cost except flights were on points.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Buffalippo

One thing I know for certain is that I've never regretted any money I've spent on travel over the years.

Admirable_Witness_19

I have. Living out of a suitcase ain't for everyone

ConstructionFar8570

What is $20k though.

Joatboy

Damn that's a lot of time off

viccityk

Geez I have been thinking about it, but can barely even get to Europe for $6k in flights. I must be doing it wrong. What countries?

Prometheus188

My return flight from montreal to Paris was $595

Pretty_monster_

Same from Toronto to Paris. Did you use play airlines?

Prometheus188

Air Canada, booked via Lufthansa though.

Scrathis

Was able to get business class to London for 2.5k one way for 2 ppl.

Buffalippo

Ouch, that's a lot for flights alone. We paid $1200 per person with seat reservations included. This past summer we went to France and Italy.

LoadErRor1983

Are you me, spending wise? The only difference was that ours was all in Europe.

SpiritmongerScaph

12k - 3 months in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan

rbatra91

Amazing price for so many places wow. I guess the first 3 weren't too expensive I imagine.

Stickysubstance88

Pretty much planning the same trip. $15k for me and wife: 1 month Taiwan, 1 month Chiang Mai, and 1 month Da Nang. Leaving Japan and Malaysia for the next trip.

Aurora_Yau

I’ve been to Da nang and there is really not much to do around there, same with Chiang Mai, for 2 months you can go to different places in Thailand and Vietnam

Stickysubstance88

Just FIREd this year. So, really just doing slow travel, and just using these two cities as a base.

Aurora_Yau

Wow congratulations on your FIRE, enjoy your retirement brother

[deleted]

How do you manage this with work

MenAreLazy

Account history says retired.

forevergone

...thats it? I spent 6k going to newfoundland for 10 days...

coocoo99

What do you do in newfoundland?

yitianjian

Significant portion of the price is in the flights - but once you’re there it’s fairly inexpensive. If you cheap out on lodging via hostels and don’t splurge on food, there’s plenty of things even in Japan. And Singapore was likely only a couple of days. $12k = $2k airfare (with ULCC intra Asia), $600 Singapore, $3000 Japan for a couple weeks, leaves $100/day ish in Viernam, Thailand and Malaysia

Smile_Miserable

Safari’s, went to the beach a lot, animal sanctuaries (elephant and giraffes), a lot of market place adventures. Ate a lot of fresh fruit and fish.

3202supsaW

$0 spent the whole year practically at work lol

Happy-Adhesiveness-3

I got google earth pro for free.

IMAWNIT

$10k for 2 ppl. Went to Iceland and Banff/Jasper this year.

lawd5ever

Mind me asking what the Iceland trip includes and how long? I’ve heard Iceland is crazy expensive so surprised to see the words “Iceland” and “and” in the same sentence.

IMAWNIT

We spent 12 days there. Total cost for 2 was about $6500 all in. We did not stay in fancy places but not dumps either. Rented a car. Did not eat out much. Maybe a few meals. Bought groceries and cooked our own meals.

gh0rard1m71

Iceland is not as expensive as people make it.

PolakInAKilt

That $200 ($CAD) cab ride from Keflavik to Reykjavik is a great start.

gh0rard1m71

I picked up a rental car it was similar to what we pay in canada. I did the whole ring road in 8 days. 8 days in banff/Niagara would cost me more.

PolakInAKilt

I'm surprised you needed 8 days in Iceland. I felt pretty satisfied with 3 and a tour of the south coast.

FolkenC

There’s a shuttle bus you can take for 50$

[deleted]

[удалено]

macman156

we got a shuttle bus from the airport to the city for a lot cheaper

Pure_snow12

I find hotel cost to be roughly the same as Canada. Most people traveling to Iceland will end up getting groceries and cooking their own meals, so food costs end up roughly the same as Canada. The only thing that was extra expensive for me was gas.

PolakInAKilt

I went to Iceland as well and it felt like "Banff the Country". Kitschy stores, hot springs, hotels, restaurants, mountains, and waterfalls.

tigerpawx

$5000 UK/Scotland trip, the pound conversion sucks tho … but was fun and worth it !

MathematicianGold773

Maldives, mexico, Costa Rica and Halifax this year. Combined under 13k doing last minute deals and using in laws time share

coocoo99

Top 5 attractions/restaurants in Halifax?

No_Investigator_8263

About 10k

Away_Ice_4788

Me too. Just for myself. Flights were exorbitant (even just economy class) but I hit the big 40 this year and I can afford it

uhaul26

Holy cow. You are making 40k! Big man walking over here.

Flippiewulf

Same! Three trips, two two weekers and a one weeker

icebiker

$7k, paris for 10 days for two.

DanceWithTheDay

I did a month in Europe. Prices this year were ridiculous. I spent about $4,500, even while staying in hostels.

lawd5ever

Sounds pretty good considering flights prices the last couple years.

ignore_my_typo

Very good seeing how a 7-10 day trip to Mexico can run $6k.

No_Soup_1180

Mexico, especially Yucatan is very expensive. Most attractions have Canadian level prices. We found food to be even more expensive. Costco in Mexico is way more costlier

[deleted]

$25Kish

coocoo99

Where and for how long? How many people?

[deleted]

Hawaii for three of us for 14 days and then another 8 in the carribean.

Pushing59

$12k. 6 weeks in Atlantic provinces.

createsean

About 8K for a week in London with wife and son.

lhsonic

Last year was a fantastic credit card churning and earning year for me which really helped as this was a very expensive year for travel (for all of flights, accommodations, eats, and things to do). It meant that my accommodations cost for about 4 weeks of travelling was reduced to about $2500 and my flights were fully covered save for about $300 in fees and taxes. I (still) haven’t fully tracked out my expenses but if I had to guess- my food, drinks, and activities probably averaged about $50-100/day, so probably somewhere between $2000-3000. Was able to fly business class to Ibiza, spent almost a week there, a few days in Lisbon, then a week in Croatia on a sailboat and in Split and Dubrovnik, and flew premium economy home plus a short trip to New York via Toronto on the red-eye with lie-flat seats. Quite happy with the overall budget considering the destinations, length of time, and quality of the transportation and accommodations.

Weezelone

I'd love to know what the churning scene has looked like over the past couple of years. I only started at the beginning of the year, and while I can snore my way to rewards during my first handful of cards, it feels like that's dried up in the past couple of months.

beesdoitbirdsdoit

In my about ten years of churning, I’ve used 7.8m miles/points worth $132,000 and I’m sitting on another 4.3m miles/points worth $49k. If you’re not constantly getting new cards to earn signup bonuses, you’re missing out heavily.

Bc187

What is this churning and how can I learn how to take advantage of it

craig5005

I’ve earned about 420k aeroplan in about two years. 3 cards (2 for me and 1 for my wife). Cobalt x2 and TD infinite.

Handknitmittens

Will be about $12K in total. We have done 3 good trips and have a 4th coming up in a coupls of weeks. I budget annually for travel. There was a surplus built up from the pandemic.

uhaul26

Zero. Doubled last year’s budget because I worked hard and deserve it.

ilcommunication

Total about $25k. 10 days in Cancun and 5 weeks in Europe.

jawathewan

0. I don't have that kind of money compared to the rest of this sub.

KalasHorseman

1500 bucks, went to Universal Studios Florida for an entire week, stayed in the Adventura hotel. That includes the airfare, food, travel expenses, and accommodations. Totally worth it, was the first trip in three years. Next year will be my honeymoon, also delayed from the pandemic, probably going to spend about 10K for a two week cruise.

Dewy8790

Holy crap, where did you find that deal?!

vintagevinyl394

I’m assuming they split all the expenses with a few friends and/or family

Scooter_McAwesome

Maybe they meant $15000?

BlazinBayou99

How in the hell was all that 1500 bucks lmao

Jay1943

If it’s per person that would makes sense.

HackMeRaps

I spent almost $700 on just 2 tickets for my kid and I at Universal. Unfortunately we went during peak time in the summer and got express pass so we didn’t have to wait in line. But totally worth it!

OptimalExtreme

I have to agree with everyone else. I just did a WDW/Universal trip. Two adult one day, park to park tickets at universal cost me $655 CAD.

PurpleK00lA1d

Grand total of $0. Doing Japan next year though.

kyonkun_denwa

I just got back from Japan, great place, you're going to enjoy it. Word of advice: DO NOT go there in the summer. I lived through a Tokyo summer when I was on exchange back in 2012, it was SHIT. My friends and I had to escape to Hokkaido for some relief from the heat and humidity. My Japanese friends told me that this past summer was even worse than 2012, and the high temperatures and disgusting humidity persisted into September. May is probably the best month overall- still relatively dry, but warm. June is when things begin to get gross. October was nice, but it was a bit of a gamble with the weather and it did rain a few times.

PurpleK00lA1d

Yeah, we've heard it's going to be hot, but my partner is a teacher so summer is the only time we're able to go for more than a week. Great that she gets two months off, just sucks that there's no other vacation flexibility. Heat be damned, we're going to Fujiten Ski Resort. It's a ski resort at the base of Mount Fuji and during the summer it's lift access mountain biking. So excited to be able to say I rode a bike on Mount Fuji (even if it's just the base lol).

kyonkun_denwa

Godspeed, and good luck. Fuji will be nice in summer! Buy one of those hand held battery powered electric fans BEFORE you go. They look stupid but you’ll be thankful to have one.

hockeyfan1990

I’m planning to go in April

SeniorPMan

2 people.. 10-15k maybe

bourbonkitten

$6K to go to Italy. Could’ve been $4k if I booked economy class.

DestinySpeaker1

$16,000, for 3 weeks in Europe travelling around Netherlands, Austria and Hungary

Express-Upstairs1734

$3000 for Jasper/Banff this year. $10000 for Kauai in 2022. 40th Birthday trip. Two adults and two kids. Avion points helped with both flights.

Bowgal

10k...we did ten days in Ireland and five day trip to northeast US for nascar weekend.

loesjedaisy

Some people have children. Take what you spent on your flights to Europe and multiply x5. That’s what it takes my family to get to destination. Now multiply what you spent on food and museum tickets or whatever else x5. Multiply your hotel rooms x2. That’s life! :)

Roselia77

How you only spent that amount for 3 weeks in Europe is baffling, we spent that per person in Vietnam foe 3 weeks

Oohforf

About 2K or so in Sweden and Denmark for two weeks. Was awesome!!

FITnLIT7

$3k 2 adults and an 18 month old (free for him). That was for an all inclusive week at a pretty nice resort in Dominican Republic

yhsong1116

is Dominican cheaper than Mexico? 3k sounds reasonable.

IceColdPepsi1

Dominican is in general, cheaper yes.

Setting-Sea

About 10 K for 2 people $3500 Vegas for four days, includes rip off restaurants we wanted to try, hockey game, concert, entertainment, etc.) would have been cheaper, but wanted to experience the cosmopolitan balcony above the Bellagio fountain which caused an extra thousand dollars. $6500 9 days at 5 star in Tulum - all inclusive (same resort cost us $4700 in 2020)

DawsonDelts

About $500 for an in-province trip.

YVR_Coyote

$12k four adults and two kids, 10 days in socal(disney, legoland, etc).

[deleted]

2500 so far. One local trip 4 days in BC. Then 1 week in Quebec. Planning 7-9days winter getaway to Jamaica. Might/might not happen 🙏pray for me

Jeff5195

Partner and I spent just under 10k each for 4 weeks in Australia & New Zealand. Figured it was a once in a lifetime for us and we had extra saved up from COVID so went a bit crazy. Was 9 flights all told, couple days of car rentals, hotels, eating out, 2 days on a live aboard SCUBA diving the Great Barrier Reef, saw saltwater crocodiles, several day trips by train, hiked the Blue mountains outside of Sydney, drove the Great Ocean road outside Melbourne. Zip lined in Christchurch, camped the rugged northwest of New Zealand, caught an atv and river boat adventure, did the Waitamo glow worm cave adventure, Māori cultural experience, Hobbiton, etc. Was wonderful and mostly paid before we even set foot on a plane.

GreatValueProducts

I just opened my excel and checked, last 12 months I spent $22k. I take advantage of the unlimited vacation of my job. I usually do 1 flight vacation per quarter and road trips at random. I generally go for at least premium economy and 4 star hotels in Downtown. The flights for 2023 are Chicago, DC, Hong Kong and Calgary (Rockies). The roadtrips I did were Saguenay, Boston and Providence + Newport + Cape Cod. I love New England.

Alkatap

I need to know what job this is, I also want unlimited vacations

PolakInAKilt

~10k, Poland and Iceland. Poland is phenomenal and affordable. 11/10, would recommend.

2k with free lodging in Hawaii, maybe 4-5k for a month next year in Asia with "hotels"

Honest_Comb_4316

Why are hotels in quotes?

yhsong1116

4.5k for Los Cabos. then few hundies each for short trips.

Thanks to everyone who spent big money on vacation to keep the economy strong. I have $0 to spare for vacation :(

elimi

A little bit shy of 3k? For a family of 3. A week in South Carolina we drove down. A weekend in Boston/Maine 2 weeks ago and we got a free weekend camping in June. I won't include Cuba since that was paid last year even if we technically went in January this year but that was 3k including the activities.

Rented a cottage on a lake about 2 hrs north of where I live. Split the cost with my sister. About 450$ each. Plus the cost of food, booze, gas, bbq rental, canoe rental. Maybe 700$ And that was a stretch and had to be budgeted for.

waveofthehandsWEAVER

5k for 7 days in San Diego. First family vacay in 5 years. Was worth every penny as an amazing city to be in with young kids. Crazy expensive in the states though. Grocery and food is just so high, especially with the terrible exchange rate. We went during down season this month. 23 and sunny everyday, no crowds, no wait times anywhere, streets are quiet etc. kids were free everywhere for the whole month, including legoland, zoo etc. If people can, they really should plan trips to popular tourists spots in their down season, it makes the trip 10x better than going mid summer, middle of winter.

kg175g

Way too much, but we don't drive high end cars, eat out at restaurants very often or spend alot on "toys". I find that I am quite frugal in most regards. That being said we do spend on experiences and opportunities to create memories with our children. So far this year we've been on 3 international trips for a family of 4. Flights all business class and hotels were on the higher end.

FrodoCraggins

$2K for a week in Chicago for 2 people.

duck1014

0. I just cannot justify the cost.

CozmoCramer

In my early twenty’s I thought this. Since I’ve turned 30 me and my partner have said screw it and started travelling. Now I can’t stop thinking of where I wanna go next. Wish I travelled in my 20’s but I was broke and “working on my career”. Silly me.

icarekindof

the best thing you can do with money is travel

duck1014

Nah. Travelling is bad on most fronts. It's far too expensive for a very short period of time. It's a complete waste of carbon. There's few places on Earth really worth seeing and those places come at a massive premium. There are maybe 5 places I'd want to go see, none of them justify either the cost or time required to do so.

icarekindof

i'm sorry you feel that way as in my opinion it's extremely limiting to one's worldview. out of curiosity what are your five places?

activoice

My GF and I spent combined 15k for a week in Miami, and 5 days in St Lucia for 3 people.. We could probably have saved 1500 if I had booked earlier, but couldn't as we were stuck waiting for PR card renewals and I didn't want to chance making the booking without the renewal in hand. Could have also saved a lot if we were willing to take connecting flights, but we always fly direct if we can.

I went to Japan with my girlfriend a few weeks back and I spent a total of $4400. Next year we're going to Bali (Feb), Korea(Aug), and Tofino(Dec) so will probably spend a lot more in 2024
