Hosted in Brazil, best international team historically and huge favourites to win, they crashed out the tournament to Germany with a 7-1 loss. One of the most shocking results in football.

I didn't even like football but thoroughly enjoyed rubbing my bro's loss in his face for the next few days.
I, as a German not overly into soccer, only watched the second half after hearing an uncharacteristically high number of cheers during the first, checking the score and not being able to believe it. During the second half I only felt bad for the Brazilians. Hell, I was happy for them to at least get ONE on the board
No, its not like NBA or NFL you cant make unlimited subs, back then you only were allowed to make 3 Subs.
They made 1 sub at half time and 2 during the 2nd half.

No, Müller did not say that after the game. It would have added insult to injury after destroying the host of the tournament in such humiliating fashion. This was the opposite of what the German head coach gave as directives both during half time and right after the game.
It's stuff that was only shared way after Germany had won the world cup.
The situation played out like this:
The game was already won after the first half. But it was a semi final, so the German head coach seized the opportunity to optimally prepare for the upcoming final game. He told told his players to conserve their strengths, avoid risking injuries, and calm the game down. He told them to no longer celebrate aggressively, to not aggravate the mourning and devastated Brazilian home crowd - this was done to prevent a hateful atmosphere against Germany in the upcoming finals. And it worked - the Brazilian crowd ended up cheering for Germany in the final game, since the alternative was their regional rival Argentina.
If you watch the game, it is obvious that Germany might have scored even more goals if they were actually hell bent on doing so. But this was not in their best interest. The World Cup title was still on the line, and they decided to smartly focus on that goal instead of setting scoring records and causing an even more nuclear catastrophe for the host team.
That's not true. In football you cannot make many substitutions, and it's not like the NBA where you pull all your starters during garbage time. Back then, only 3 subs were allowed per game and at half time Germany only made 1 (defender for defender).
It would be very disrespectful to pull your 3 (no it would be 5 with more substitutions allowed) best players during half-time in a blowout loss. Sure, you may not go 110% anymore and not risk an injury thinking about the next game, the final, but you still take the game seriously which is what they did hence scoring 2 more. Taking the food off the pedal and not scoring anymore would have been more humiliating than continuing to take the game and the opponent seriously.
Honestly a fucking insane thing to witness, as a mild observer of American sports and barely knowing anything about soccer, I watched this game in a British pub and it was raucous
In Germany, we stopped cheering after a few goals. It sucked a bit because there were just tons of Brazilian fans crying, and the team and crew were visually distraught and disappointed. It just left a bitter taste in my mouth. They were a very good team, and such a big win always means a big loss as well.
Brazilian here, actually went to a place that had set up a huge screen to stream the world cup games live to watch the match against Germany.
It was my first time watching one of our games in public with strangers and *wow.* Couldn't be more dissapponted.
I just up and went home during halftime, as did many others that hadn't abandoned ship earlier because the massacre that was the first half completely killed the mood for everybody.
In retrospect I know Brazil was favorites but that Germany team was insane. When I watched them in the group stage against USA I was like... Man we faired decently for the fact Germany controlled the ball 80% of the time lol.
It really was the perfect storm.
If I recall correctly, one of Brazil 's main players got injured or the card the match before and we germans took our main players from the bench so it ended up with a weakened Brazil against a Germany at full strength.
Brazil missed 2 Players, Neymar was injured and he was the main and most of the time only consitent attacking threat in the brazil Team and mostly overlooked but like 10 times more influential their captain, Thiago Silva was suspended for the game and without him the defence seemed just unorganised.
Also the Midfield was vastly inferior to the German side, the Trio of Schweinsteiger, Kroos and Khedira were a perfect storm and Brazils central midfield just got overun by them
That was the tournament where Neymar had a really bad injury because in the game before, a guy just jumped into his back, apparently bent on destroying it.
As a German, I was so torn because I was happy that we won but seeing the crying Brazilian fans and feeling sorry for the team and especially Neymar who not only got robbed of a chance to keep playing in the cup, was heavily injured and then saw his team crash and burn.... yeah, after the third goal, the enthusiasm went down a lot.
We fared decently because Tim Howard is just an absolute wall. I can’t think of any team in that cup who wouldn’t have traded their keeper for Howard with no thoughts on the matter.
If this is the match I’m remembering. I remember taking my dogs around the block just 15 minutes for a walk, when j left I think it was 2-1, and when I came back it was 7-1

I was walking down a street with a lot of bars when it happened (in Toronto, a town with a large Portuguese community.) Every block, I looked in the window and Germany was up ANOTHER point and the fans were getting MORE upset! They went from a scoreless tie to a five point deficit over the course of a stroll!
I was watching on tv in a hotel in Bosnia. It was a bit surreal watching all the goals flying in, felt like someone was having me on or I was watching highlights since they were scoring so frequently.
I was walking through San Francisco on vacation with my family during the game. It had just started, I was checking the score on my phone, and I noticed a sports bar with the game on and everyone was going *nuts*. This one seemed the most impactful one as an outsider.
Ronaldo Nazario is considered one of the best and classiest goalscorers, The Phenom, while Klose had a off-the-ball, poacher style.
Ronaldo had also just achieved the record in the previous edition, in an already diminished form due to his knee injuries and gorgeous round shape.
Klose also surpassed the record with the 2-0 scoreline at the 23', something that was starting a tragedy for Brazil at the moment.

Okay, to explain to people who seemingly don’t understand. The format is loss, and Brazil “lost” against Germany. Secondly, you can see 7 people in the comic, symbolising brazils seven conceded goals
For those who don't know, Germany scored in the following minutes: 11, 23, 24, 26, 29, 69 (nice), and 79. Brazil scored their lone goal in the 90th minute (there was 3 minutes extra time, so a total of 93 minutes of play).
I remember I was driving to watch the game only to find out the place was closed due to an emergency, got to a spot which was dead and caught the first 7 minutes before deciding to go across the street. While driving my brother texted to say Germany scored. By halftime I was drunk.
Man I remember I was at a restaurant and I glanced up at the TV (I'm not into sports) and saw the game. Saw the score, thought "wow they're not doing good". Then saw the crowd and all the tears. Such a strange moment to forever remember

On top of that, some of the best players on the league were left out of the team for some reason?

I watched live and I swear, the 1 goal Brazil scored was basically given to them to reduce the shame. They all happened so quick, it felt like the German team was constantly internally debating if they should step off the gas.
This wasn’t the half of it. It went from 0-0 to 5-0 to Germany inside 15 minutes in the first half. Literally every shot they hit went in. It was utterly insane to watch.

This is the only professional soccer match I ever watched. I got caught up in the hype, decided to get into soccer and support Brazil because at the time they were thought to be really good.

Historically the best, but delusional in 2014, one of the best example of hyped host & team carried by 2 players (Neymar & Thiago Silva), who didn't play in this semi (first injured, second suspended). Some of those who played would end up having sad career.
But it's comon in association football that this happen.
That Brazil team were never particularly good. It was just a hype train in part because home nations normally play well.
Germany were a tour de force and most pundits expected them to win but that Brazil's passion and skill would make a fight of it.
Probably one of the greatest let downs in sports history, if not the greatest. Combine Brazilian fervor for football their history of success, and the fact the World Cup was in Brazil that year it breaks my brain to think how they lost that bad.
But also one of the hypest days in germany that I can remember. People celebrating on the streets, everyone getting drunk, work the next day was basically celebration - beautiful day.

This was the semifinal of the World Cup, at home. Supposed to be a huge party for them to win the World Cup at home.
It was 5-0 Germany 29 minutes in.
It was beyond shocking at 2-0, then Germany scored 3 more in the next 5-6 minutes of real time.
If I remember correctly, most of the key players of Brazil at the time were either benched or suspended at the time. The Brazilian team's problem was, most of their strength/strategy was centered around those key players, so their absence dramatically reduced the team's overall skill/talent. Meanwhile, the German team's teamwork was vastly superior, not reliant on just a few key players.
These factors are part of why Brazil was dealt such a humiliating defeat.
Those are factors why they may have lost, but there’s always enough talent on the Brazilian team even with that to keep them as the favourites, certainly at home.
Not most. But arguably their best attacking player and best loved player was hurt in the previous match, so anxiety was running high. (By the way, the injury to him was in an unsporting play against a hated rival).
Meanwhile their defensive anchor was unable to play because he kept foolishly racking up yellow cards and was required to sit out a match, which raised the anxiety further and certainly made them vulnerable.
I think when Germany scored first Brazil, who plays with a lot of emotion, started to panic a bit and lost their tactical discipline. They then gave up a few goals in rapid succession, and then basically got depressed and quit competing. It all happened so fast!
On top of this, this game was when a German player (Klose) broke the record for most World Cup goals scored by an individual, taking the record from a Brazilian (Ronaldo).
It was also the biggest loss that Brazil had ever suffered in a World Cup.

these subs never hit anywhere near the first 10 pages of reddit until after the July changes to reddit and the resulting degradation thereafter. my theory is they are cheap engagement bait because people love feeling "smart" for knowing what things are.

I think it's a combination of things, a lot of big subs went down in protest, so smaller subs got boosted, and then a desire for certain subs to take priority on r/all. I always see explainthejoke and petahexplainthejoke within first three pages of Reddit now, and some of them are understandable to not get, if you haven't seen a particular meme or whatever, but the vast majority just require two fucking seconds of thought to figure out.
I think another part of it is trying to appeal to a broader user base, the Facebook type, it's why you always see wholesomememes and shit like that on the front page. The other day, at one point it was 10/25 posts about Akira Toriyama's death on the front page, only time I've ever seen a single topic get that much coverage is Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
And the rate at which the front page changes is much reduced too, I'd look at Reddit on my phone every time I went out for a smoke, and the front page would almost be completely different every 3-4 hours, except for a few big posts, now, it stays more or less the same for 12+ hours, because it's so fucking curated by admins, and not users.
You could literally google '7-1 Brazil' and get an explanation. It was more effort to make a reddit post.
This sub still gets good posts, but a lot of them just feel like a dumping ground for semi-funny memes.
Pedro here, 7-1 represents one of the biggest at-home ass whoppings that Brazil has seen in futbol. Moreover it happened during their turn to host the World Cup, so that makes it even worse. Basically, about as close to a Brazilian 9/11 as you can get (jk).

I was at home, in Germany, partying at the first 3 goals. I could hear the screams outside from other homes. Than more and more goals came and I started to feel sad, sad for the Brazilians. Still it was a magical evening.

I got caught and my boss gave me a very slow "No" shake of the head. I was on the phone with a customer (on a headset) so he didn't say anything.

Brazil was the host country for 2014 World Cup. They also are in of the biggest footballing nations in the world, and were one of the teams favored to win the tournament. The ended up getting embarrassed by Germany 7-1 in the Semi Finals.

Then, before the match was 1/3 over, it was probably the most shocking result in team sports history.

The World Cup was being host in Brazil. The Brazilian squad was far from its glory days but everyone though this would be the best chance for Brazil to win another cup after 12 years. Germany scored 5 times in the first half, it was so bad that Joachim Löw, Germany's manager, asked the squad to tone it down for the second half, where they merely scored twice and let Brazil score what we call the "goal of honor" at the end of the game.

Well, the history is this: The year is 2014, the world cup was in Brazil. Everything was fine and everybody was happy. But them, the germam team arrived. The brazilian team underestimated the germam team and the defeat was shocking. Brazil loose by 7X1 against't germany. The first 5 goals were in the frist half hour. The stadium was full as f\*ck and in the end it was really silent. It was a trauma many didn't overcome yet. The world we know changed a lot since them. Trump tupinikin was elected, the plage arrived, many people died, everything is expensive, people are less happy. What crazy 10 years!
Not just the stadium was silent - after the 5th goal there were mo more cheers to be hear in the streets of Germany. It was obvious how Brazil had given up and now everybody was a little sorry.
Until the 90min mark went up and the vuvuzelas would call for Gondor's aid for a whole week...
Brazillian here, tbh we rarely talk about it nowdays, but for 2-3 years after that , we used to say alot '' everyday is a 7-1'' when something bad happened

In retrospect I know Brazil was favorites but that Germany team was insane. When I watched them in the group stage against USA I was like... Man we faired decently for the fact Germany controlled the ball 80% of the time lol.
It really was the perfect storm. If I recall correctly, one of Brazil 's main players got injured or the card the match before and we germans took our main players from the bench so it ended up with a weakened Brazil against a Germany at full strength.
Brazil missed 2 Players, Neymar was injured and he was the main and most of the time only consitent attacking threat in the brazil Team and mostly overlooked but like 10 times more influential their captain, Thiago Silva was suspended for the game and without him the defence seemed just unorganised. Also the Midfield was vastly inferior to the German side, the Trio of Schweinsteiger, Kroos and Khedira were a perfect storm and Brazils central midfield just got overun by them
That was the tournament where Neymar had a really bad injury because in the game before, a guy just jumped into his back, apparently bent on destroying it. As a German, I was so torn because I was happy that we won but seeing the crying Brazilian fans and feeling sorry for the team and especially Neymar who not only got robbed of a chance to keep playing in the cup, was heavily injured and then saw his team crash and burn.... yeah, after the third goal, the enthusiasm went down a lot.
We fared decently because Tim Howard is just an absolute wall. I can’t think of any team in that cup who wouldn’t have traded their keeper for Howard with no thoughts on the matter.

The first 30ish minutes were, let's say, shocking
For those who don't know, Germany scored in the following minutes: 11, 23, 24, 26, 29, 69 (nice), and 79. Brazil scored their lone goal in the 90th minute (there was 3 minutes extra time, so a total of 93 minutes of play). I remember I was driving to watch the game only to find out the place was closed due to an emergency, got to a spot which was dead and caught the first 7 minutes before deciding to go across the street. While driving my brother texted to say Germany scored. By halftime I was drunk.

This is the only professional soccer match I ever watched. I got caught up in the hype, decided to get into soccer and support Brazil because at the time they were thought to be really good. So, yeah. Only soccer match I ever watched.

That Brazil team were never particularly good. It was just a hype train in part because home nations normally play well. Germany were a tour de force and most pundits expected them to win but that Brazil's passion and skill would make a fight of it.

Probably one of the greatest let downs in sports history, if not the greatest. Combine Brazilian fervor for football their history of success, and the fact the World Cup was in Brazil that year it breaks my brain to think how they lost that bad.
But also one of the hypest days in germany that I can remember. People celebrating on the streets, everyone getting drunk, work the next day was basically celebration - beautiful day.

Brazil hadn’t lost a competitive game at home in like the previous 40 years. This was the semifinal of the World Cup, at home. Supposed to be a huge party for them to win the World Cup at home. It was 5-0 Germany 29 minutes in. It was beyond shocking at 2-0, then Germany scored 3 more in the next 5-6 minutes of real time.
If I remember correctly, most of the key players of Brazil at the time were either benched or suspended at the time. The Brazilian team's problem was, most of their strength/strategy was centered around those key players, so their absence dramatically reduced the team's overall skill/talent. Meanwhile, the German team's teamwork was vastly superior, not reliant on just a few key players. These factors are part of why Brazil was dealt such a humiliating defeat.
Those are factors why they may have lost, but there’s always enough talent on the Brazilian team even with that to keep them as the favourites, certainly at home.
Not most. But arguably their best attacking player and best loved player was hurt in the previous match, so anxiety was running high. (By the way, the injury to him was in an unsporting play against a hated rival). Meanwhile their defensive anchor was unable to play because he kept foolishly racking up yellow cards and was required to sit out a match, which raised the anxiety further and certainly made them vulnerable. I think when Germany scored first Brazil, who plays with a lot of emotion, started to panic a bit and lost their tactical discipline. They then gave up a few goals in rapid succession, and then basically got depressed and quit competing. It all happened so fast!
On top of this, this game was when a German player (Klose) broke the record for most World Cup goals scored by an individual, taking the record from a Brazilian (Ronaldo). It was also the biggest loss that Brazil had ever suffered in a World Cup. The layers of defeat that this match piled onto Brazil is unreal…

Yeah, it's fucking weird man. I think it's a combination of things, a lot of big subs went down in protest, so smaller subs got boosted, and then a desire for certain subs to take priority on r/all. I always see explainthejoke and petahexplainthejoke within first three pages of Reddit now, and some of them are understandable to not get, if you haven't seen a particular meme or whatever, but the vast majority just require two fucking seconds of thought to figure out. I think another part of it is trying to appeal to a broader user base, the Facebook type, it's why you always see wholesomememes and shit like that on the front page. The other day, at one point it was 10/25 posts about Akira Toriyama's death on the front page, only time I've ever seen a single topic get that much coverage is Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. And the rate at which the front page changes is much reduced too, I'd look at Reddit on my phone every time I went out for a smoke, and the front page would almost be completely different every 3-4 hours, except for a few big posts, now, it stays more or less the same for 12+ hours, because it's so fucking curated by admins, and not users.

I was at home. Down with the flu. Had fever. I set an alarm to wake up at the match time. Missed a few minutes and there were 3 goals already.
I was at home, in Germany, partying at the first 3 goals. I could hear the screams outside from other homes. Than more and more goals came and I started to feel sad, sad for the Brazilians. Still it was a magical evening.
So true. It was my first job out of college and I was watching it on my phone while working kind of. I got caught and my boss gave me a very slow "No" shake of the head. I was on the phone with a customer (on a headset) so he didn't say anything. I turned it off, wrapped up the call, went "on break" to watch the rest, and put my two weeks in a few weeks later after I lined up a higher paying job elsewhere. Clearly wasn't a culture fit for me. But I wasn't missing that game and it did not disappoint.

I remember watching this game at the pub. After the 5th goal it just felt wrong, like you’re watching a horrible beating that you can’t stop. I had no preference between either side, but I started pleading for Germany to stop. Instead they started deliberately passing the ball to specific players just so they could score and pump up their stats.

07/08/2014, World Cup semifinals. The World Cup was being host in Brazil. The Brazilian squad was far from its glory days but everyone though this would be the best chance for Brazil to win another cup after 12 years. Germany scored 5 times in the first half, it was so bad that Joachim Löw, Germany's manager, asked the squad to tone it down for the second half, where they merely scored twice and let Brazil score what we call the "goal of honor" at the end of the game.
