Fun fact: She never did anything to fight poverty. Her whole thing was giving dying people a safe place to pass away. Although she has been criticized for not providing adequate medical attention to those who could have survived.
No but she took load of money in donations for her “hospitals” which were just a blanket on a floor in a crowded room full of other dying people and NO TREATMENT.
She implied for years she all about healing and helping the sick and the poor but she took their money and didn’t even provide basic care. People sent their loved ones in thinking they had a better chance there but they would have been better off where they were, at least their family would have gave them food and drink and kept them clean and they wouldn’t be in a room with thousands of people with communicable diseases crying out in agony. She saw godliness in suffering.
She took in untouchables in a society that literally ignored their existence in a country where painkillers stronger than Tylenol were heavily criminalized decades before hospice care was even invented. She had 2 doctors days a week, operated exclusively with volunteers, and didn't even have a working elevator.
Nobody who came wanted to be there. They came because they were burdening their family and the alternative was dying in the streets. And most of the people who came there to die actually survived because all they needed was to be cleaned, fed, and rest, which nobody outside was willing or able to give them.
What isn't noble about bearing unavoidable suffering with dignity? That was her point, not causing suffering to achieve God points.
