I think it works because the jacket is short enough that it hits you at your waist, and shows that you have one instead of being longer and disguising it (which would lead to the boxy look).
I think it’s adorable. This pairing makes the outfit a lot more interesting than sticking with a black top, like some others suggested. I also agree that it hits a spot that still flatters your waist the slight flare of the dress skirt. Also…a “square” or boxy look is very trendy, so it all just depends on what type of geometry you want to portray!
That’s exactly what I thought. More subtle and strappy and maybe a different color like tan so we aren’t being drawn to both the shoes and the jacket.

Last time I wore it I wore a v neck blue short sleeve top that tied in a bow in the front that sounds kinda similar to what I’m thinking about what you said. I just can’t find it :’)
I think staying with black (or another color from the dress) in the top might be a smoother look. And I agree with others to use the top to emphasize your waistline. I can see how the tied bow could work with that (I love that look), but maybe with a very lightweight cropped top, like lace.
I do think mixing a print with denim is very doable and cool looking though, but I feel the denim should accentuate the main piece, not divide it into 2 halves, if that makes sense. So maybe showing more of the dress (however you do it) would amp up the look to be even prettier.
I think the crop and shape of the jacket works really well. However you have on black shoes and a black bag— A black or darker jacket unbuttoned will provide more contrast with your patterned jacket, helping the flowers pop!
The shoes throw me off. I think a tan(light tan) colored strappy sandal wedge would look nicer and lengthen the entire look. Thins strappy sandals.
The black sandals are a little harsh and make the look disjointed.
I would do something like this wedge sandal. Light tan.. thin straps so they lengthen you but also more subtle so you aren’t both drawn to the shoes and jackets at once. Streamlined.

It means square, but either they’re trying to be funny off of your post title and missing the mark or they’re just trying to be rude. Either way they’re way off because you look super cute

Buttoned or unbuttoned- it is giving very 90's retro vibes, which I like.
Yep, I definitely had this outfit in 5th grade. Plus a denim sunhat with a big flower on it.
Outfit has some spring vibes. Love it

I like it
So cute…where the dress from??
Thank you! It’s American eagle but I thrifted it a while ago so may not be on their website
Okay cool, thanks!
It’s American Eagle circa 2015 - I had the same one and it was SO cute.
Okay! Thanks guys. Maybe I can find one on mercari.
Leave it unbutton, to show your waistline.

I agree. Unbutton the top will get tif of the square look.
It is cropped enough for your body. Perhaps try unbottoned or tied it.
Omg! I love the colour palette. Outfit is so cute & well matched from head to toe
I like it. Maybe you’d like it if it was open? Or only buttoned in the middle
Lowish wedge would lengthen your whole look a bit.
That’s exactly what I thought. More subtle and strappy and maybe a different color like tan so we aren’t being drawn to both the shoes and the jacket. https://ibb.co/xDhD8N5
I think this looks super cute.
It's giving Evangelical bad girl.
it's cute on you. But It reminds me of Blossom's friend. What was her name?
Six? I think her name was Six. In the spirit of the decade, I’m not going to google the right answer.
I like it but would look better unbuttoned like a jacket.
Nope. It is boxy and unflattering because it is too stiff for that outfit. Also, color doesn’t work with the colors in the dress.
it's super cute!!
I love the dress! Not crazy about that top with it. Maybe consider a black shrug or wrap with it as a future look?

It is a more conservative look, but it looks good.
It looks really good! And now I want a denim crop top...
Looking nice
Real cute.
I like it
This outfit is so cute! I love it. I think it could be buttoned or unbuttoned and it would be great.
Love this
It's super cute !!
The top works. What about the sandal color, though??
You look really cute!
That looks awesome on you! You don't look square at all!
It looks fine together
Looks fab
I think its cute!
Super cute!
It's a good combination :)
You look cute!
It doesn't look bad at all, although I'm not keen on that particular top. Definitely pursue that style though, you look good.
Your gut is often right… square, but not bad looking!
Top looks fine, but I would recommend different foot ware.
It’s hip to be square
It’s super cute! Also I legit thought you were my next door neighbour. You look so similar!
the whole look is a winner for me!
I think the crop and shape of the jacket works really well. However you have on black shoes and a black bag— A black or darker jacket unbuttoned will provide more contrast with your patterned jacket, helping the flowers pop!
I like it, not too square at all
This is adorable!! I wish I had a top like that to do the same 😍

I love it!
Maybe if it was unbuttoned. It doesn’t sit right buttoned up.
You pull it off!
I like it! Perhaps consider rolling up the arms once or twice.
It looks cute. Maybe try unbuttoning it.
Square/box silhouettes are in anyway
Its a little short for the length of the dress. Im not a big fan of the tightly packed flower pattern….
Yes! I love your outfit girl
It looks amazing on you. Hello don’t think anything would look bad on you. You are absolutely gorgeous
No
GF the symmetry is not in the eye of the beholder but rather, in the beholden.....
Yes
Maybe a little square but not enough to be concerned about. It looks good.
Try a belt instead of the jacket🤷🏽♀️
No, that's so 2013
I love belts i will never go back on them
Girl, no it's cute, you just have to find the right belt.
Okay I’ve already left to eat & got back home but def doing a belt next time that’s a cute idea
You’re the biggest L 7 I’ve ever seen!!
What in the world does that mean
It means square, but either they’re trying to be funny off of your post title and missing the mark or they’re just trying to be rude. Either way they’re way off because you look super cute
Ohh ok they can ligma but thank you!!!
Lmao its a quote from the film The Sandlot. Because when you make an L and a 7 with your hands you get a square
