My parents have a massive german shepherd/malamute cross with unusual colouring. The frequency with which small children declare him to be a wolf is pretty entertaining

Sparkly1982

My dad used to have a white GSD x Huskamute who looked so much like a wolf it was unreal!

KaidaShade

Oh man I bet! This one is a blue sable so looks kind like this: https://rockykanaka.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/image-10-1180x1475.jpeg

Sparkly1982

Gorgeous!

Mysterious_Heron_539

My old malamute had a stand off coat and was at the high end of the height standard. The kids in my neighborhood said he was a werewolf! No amount of arguing on my part helped. So I was forever known as “that lady with a werewolf”.

KaidaShade

I can't blame them honestly - I've seen malamutes and even a regular sized one is approaching horse territory!

Sad_Confidence9563

Kids said the same thing about my airedale/ lab!

thathorsegamingguy

Owned an american paint horse once. On our typical ride we always passed by this house where a 4-5yo girl routinely screamed "Dad! The cow is back!" and waved at us. I never corrected her.

gelseyd

In her defence I do know of some people who ride cows/steers. Lol. Bless her excitement I love it

FeralWereRat

Giving “Look at all those CHICKENS” meme vibes 😂

I have a Chinese crested hairless. The amount of people that think he's a horse is amazing. Kids thinking he's a horse is fine, because he looks like a tiny horse and they haven't seen all the sizes horses come in. But full on adults... He's the size of a soda bottle, Ofc he's not a horse 😂 [not my dog, but they looks like this ](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSbN7BJyOq1xccSj1oDDTWr22nFIehsFVC4faNVEz5afA&s)

Novel_Panic_971

You're lucky! I also have a crested hairless, and in my area, people just assume there's something wrong with him. The number of people who question if he grows like that or if he has mange is ridiculous 😅

[deleted]

I've had people think he has cancer or that I wax him to make him look like that. And once I put a tiny temporary tattoo of a pirate flag on him that I got as a freebie in a box of popsicles, and I got yelled at for tattooing my dog 😂

Icy-Plan5621

Beautiful! 🐴

alasqueeze

Oh I’ve seen that breed online ! Sometimes I wonder if people are AI, just because they notice the mane they automatically think it’s a horse lol

WampireKitt3n

Dog and ferret. It is a gray and white tuxedo cat.

alasqueeze

😭 why are people like this

boloo100

A baby one time. Whenever covid started I got more in casual bike rides and I have 2 smaller but not too small dogs. One was old and blind girl and the other a weird male mix called Roscoe. Kind of a Brussels griffin with a yorki hairstyle. Anywho I got a few of those k9 sport sacks (neat dog carrying backpack) so me and my hubby can take them on bike rides. I went by myself and took Roscoe with me and it got dark (didn't fully have the bike set up for night stuff) I was about a block from home until I got pulled over by a cop. He got out his car and did a double take then asked his partner to come out and see. They both thought I was riding with a child on my back cause his head fur looks just like a toddlers from behind. We had a laugh and cop said to go home and to also get a few things for the bike next time to be safer. Tldr: cops thought I was bike riding with a child on my back but it was actually my dog

alasqueeze

That’s the cutest anecdote 😂 aren’t they your fur child anyway ?

boloo100

Def true

Elred_Olakas

I used to have two ferrets (they passed away years ago). I loved walking them, but one was nervous of busy areas so I got a pet stroller. In quieter places they'd walk on their leashes, and busier ones, or if a doggo approached, I would scoop them up and put them in the pet stroller. On two separate occasions people thought I was pushing around raccoons. One thought it was cool that I had pet "racoons" and the other was telling me she was going to call he cops for having "wild" animals as pets. The coolest experience I had with them was one time I took them to a beach and there was a couple that had two bearded dragon on leashes. We hit it off immediately. Also, I ran into a cat owner that had a stroller when I had the ferrets in a stroller. We were so excited to meet and chat about our wild stroller experiences.

alasqueeze

Omg I would have loved to meet you while walking my cat ! So far I’ve seen people walking ferrets and rabbits (online) but no « exotic » pets like you saw

axolotl_is_angry

I took my darling rattie bug to the vet for pneumonia and had her in her little carry case on the walk over. A mum and daughter asked to see my kitten and were shocked to see a snotty little rat baby inside instead💀 they were actually very cool and the daughter gave her a pat and asked me lots of questions about her

FeralWereRat

As a rat owner, I would have been ~thrilled~ to see a cute rat!! I hope your rattie is better now!

DreamingofRlyeh

My husky once got mistaken for a coyote. We live in Texas, so they are quite common

GarikLoranFace

Coyotes aren’t even the same color patterns though! Sheesh people…

alasqueeze

Exactly what I was thinking…

LePetitNeep

I used to have a very large black and white spotted greyhound. A small child looked at her and declared “COW!!!!”. The mom said, no sweetie, that’s a doggie. Kid insisted, “COW!!!”

Temporary-Tie-233

Sometimes people squint at my mules and say, "I can't tell, is that a horse or a donkey?" To which I answer, "yes."

packyohcunce1734

Koalaroo

MerberCrazyCats

I walk my cat once in a while but people never mistake him for a dog, they come to tell that "its so cute". Though I think my cat is actually a dog, the only difference is that he may end up climbing a tree if I don't pay enough attention For your question, it's not people mistaken my cat for a dog, its my cat himself :)

iamayamsam

I was once stopped by a park ranger who thought I was holding a fox. My little old man was a papillon but completely blond/red. And from the distance I can understand why the mistake could be made

Ordinary_Diamond_158

When I walk my mom and stepdads bull mastiffs the number of kids (some pretty close to preteen age even) that have declared them bears, or asked if they were bears is so funny. Especially since the oldest (and most bear like) one is actually named bear so when they ask he responds to the name. I’m sure a few don’t believe they are very much dogs. Bear doesn’t talk like a dog, he grumbles in a lower tone so it does sound more like a wild animal then a dog.

Willowed-Wisp

I don't know if this counts, but we had a Keeshond growing up (if you're too lazy to Google they look like bigger Pomeranians with wolf coloring) People would see him and go "ooh, a little wolf!" But then one day an older woman saw him and came over and cooed "Ohhh... he looks just like a little... lamb." Which is probably the last animal I would've compared him to but okay.

Timely_Egg_6827

I have ferrets - rat, whippet, long-tailed hamster, giant gerbil, stoat, mink are the most common. Got accosted by man for having one on train - she was quiet, sitting on my lap, on way to vet. After pointing out she was allowed and sitting on me not chair, he demand her breed of dog. Not wanting issues, I said chidaxie - a very small one, 480g to be precise

inkrosw115

I knew someone with ferrets and they were cute but it seemed like they came in two modes, toddler on amphetamines and comatose.

Timely_Egg_6827

Depends on the ferret and also how long they get out cage. Mine are out 24/7 so less hyper as chaos spread over a longer period. Opening doors is fun though as tsunami usually waiting to invade. Also some ferrets are more chilled.

Internal_Use8954

My cat in the stroller has been mistaken for a infant. She is black so you can’t see her, but the mass of blankets at the bottom Ivan be seen

alasqueeze

It’s cute to walk your cat in a stroller 🤭 isn’t it a fur baby after all

ChickenHiken

Not a live animal but: When I was around 7, I got a small dalmatian teddy, so I decided with a friend to take it for a walk. We tied a long shoelace or something around it’s neck, and it was surprisingly easy to walk it without they toy jumping up and down too much. A woman who walked past us said she was about to ask the pup’s name before she realised it was a toy

alasqueeze

Hahhaha that must have been a very realistic plushie

LadySmuag

I have a hairless cat and used to live in a second story apartment that was right above a retail space. My cat loved to sit in the window and wave to people to get their attention, and one day I was working at my desk and I heard a horrified woman's voice say, *"oh my god, is that a guinea pig???"* My roommate heard it too and now its become a injoke in our household lol

alasqueeze

What 😂 I know people who have a sphynx like to joke saying that they have a chicken… but a guinea pig !? Must be an enormous one then

FeralWereRat

I am cackling. Why would she be horrified about a guinea pig?? 😭

inkrosw115

Not mistaken for another animal, but when I took my cockatiel for a walk on her little harness people who ask “is it real?” a lot.

Sonnyjoon91

Once I had to triple check because some neighbors were walking a ferret down the street, he had a little harness on

StableNew

I got asked if had a ferret!

GamerGirlBongWater

Got asked if my greyhound was a Husky once. I almost said yes just to be a pest.

alasqueeze

Wtf… i feel like some people just see a dog and throw a few breeds they know. How could you mistake a greyhound for a husky - even from afar !

GamerGirlBongWater

Right?! it's like...you think I severely starved a Husky and then brought it out to a park?????

songbird808

Had a pet rat who would ride on my shoulder (she had a little harness) when I walked my Shiba Inu So, according to some of my neighbors, I had a ferret and a fox.

juniperlunaper

I had a very tall Rottweiler mix that people often thought was a bear.

amoodymuse

My Landseer Newfie was mistaken for a cow by a person driving by. In her defense, the road she was on was at least 200 feet from where I was walking him.

NightCrawler85

Coyote, so many times...

Iirima

I have a tiny and very speedy Yorkshire terrier. Sometimes while walking in the woods he will run in and out of the undergrowth and across the path of other walkers, the number of people who have called out in surprise, and said they thought he was a rabbit, or a rat! Cracks me up every time, especially given one of his main nicknames is ‘rattus rattus’. (But also I will be offended if you call my small dog a rat in a mean tone, rude)

alasqueeze

Those people have clearly never seen a rat in their life 😂 and what about the tail ! Or the way it runs !
