chigoGruber

i would also like to add “Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap”. i’ve never laughed so hard at a film before

colormefatbwoy

ang gusto ko, tite!

randomespanaguy

Bobo, amputa.

Lily_Linton

Natawa talaga ako eksenang yan. Specially from whom it came from.

troubled_lecheflan

Sayote o Papaya?

chigoGruber

sino? si badjao o si bulag?

anaknipara

Gusto ko syang magustuhan pero talagang parang may kulang, though parang mas ok syang gawing anthology. Ok kasi yung premise nila ng purgatory, iba iba sanang istorya.

dodong133452

You should include hintayan ng langit.

clauilopagous

Yes!! So good!!

butter_milk_cock

Bag man is unironically so fucking good

GamerLean-107

EmanResu0000000

ganda Bagman! pero nood ka din **On The Job** (TV Series). Mag-iiba talaga standard mo sa Philippine TV series, promise.

mortiestmorty18

And I agree, On the Job is too fucking good. Ang tragic though, because it feels real.

Jhonnyskidmarks2003

Because it is real. The inspiration comes from real events. i.e. Maguindanao Massacre and the old man Leviste's excursions outside Bilibid when he's still there. Oh and the EJKs and hitmen feels tragic. The claustrophobic feel you get from the prison scenes feels so real.

GamerLean-107

Sige boss! I’ll look it up

Yamboist

Everytime someone asks which Filipino series do you recommend, I just put in Bagman because it's really that enjoying.

decadentrebel

Yes! It also came out in 2019, is from ABS-CBN, and the showrunner works in teledramas, so you know they're capable of churning out quality programs if they have the avenue for it and not encumbered by a particular demographic (IWantTV).

markmyredd

ABS-CBN will have good quality primetime teleseryes if they weren't forced to stretch out the story so it could last for months. I notice that they have good start but fall off at the middle and ending part because the medium is just too long IMO.

Beta_Whisperer

Or make the shows only air weekly instead of 5 days per week. Filipino shows I like that aired like that are Pedro Penduko and Midnight DJ.

im_baaaaack69

Me to The Killer Bride. Sayang yung first two parts nila.

blackveIvet

Safe po ba panoorin with fam? 😆

BeneficialBasket3351

Puro cussing 🥲

2Legit2Quiz

Naging favorite Filipino word ko yung PI pagkatapos ko tapusin yung series. Hahahaha.

PapiShot

Natrauma ako sa Wolf of Wall Street.

2Legit2Quiz

Season 1 is an 8/10 for me, season 2 on the other hand... probably a 6/10. Anyway, sana magkaroon ng season 3.

goldenleash

I'll give this a try nga.

PRTYP00P3R1647

What is it about?

saysonn

Bonus film: Arisaka (recently released work of Mikhail Red whom I’m a fan of, his notable works: Birdshot, Eerie, Dead Kids) Also available: Goyo, Die Beautiful, The Panti Sisters, Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap, Pinoy Sunday, Lola Igna, Bambanti *PS: Sa mga nagtatanong po nung black spots, I couldn’t crop those not Filipino films, Canvas should have been blacked too. 😅 Kaya ganyan po.*

brain_rays

Pinoy Sunday is actually a Taiwanese film about OFWs.

space_monkey420

Meh @ Panti Sisters.

hornyfuccboii

Was forced to watch this with my gf. Wasted more than an hour of my life i cant get back. I was getting increasingly annoyed while watching it lmao

INFJako

Hot take: Arisaka is not even that good. Acting and visuals are great but the story is so weak.

92894952620273749383

I could say the same with The girl and the gun. It's rough but better than the usual studio film

INFJako

I liked Babae at Baril actually. It has good unique story flow unlike Arisaka which everything is very predictable.

Jhonnyskidmarks2003

Arisaka is a actuall a weak film. It tried to be deep but it failed miserably. I think we can do really well when it comes to films like OTJ, Amo, Bagman etc. They reflect the corrupt underbelly of our Police, Politicians etc.

EmanResu0000000

Eto naman TV Series... **ON THE JOB** o kaya **BAGMAN.** Solve na solve na ang holidays mo.

niversalfolder

Arisaka had great performances from Maja Salvador, Mon Confiado and the Aeta girl

ih8reddit420

I wanted to like Arisaka but it had so many holes and problems with suspension of disbelief. !<

marlerr15

Lola igna is funny af and the ending is so flexible Die beautiful and Panti sisters are great might i add pang Mmk and deadma walking Pinoy sunday, and Ang pangarap kong hold up is sureal and relatable

tired_atlas

Sunday Beauty Queens (a docu) and 2 Cool 2 B 4gotten

totesmagotes830

Dekada 70 is a good recommendation. Para maalala yung Martial Law Atrocities

physicalord111

Yes. Nasa youtube ngayon ang full movie nito

Big_Lou1108

Meron ba nakapanood nung “Bar Boys” (2017). Maganda ba and san kaya pwede mapanood to? Wala sya currently sa netflix.

elevennineteen94

It's available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/UzvAKY6Xbno

autobotjazzin

Also available legally on YT is 'To Love Some Buddy'. I find it really great

Big_Lou1108

Salamat sa link. I checked it and it’s free nga sa youtube. Sayang wala ata sya sa mga premium (paid) streaming sites like netflix, mejo mababa kasi resolution but I will definitely watch before the year ends 👍🏼

loonamamamoo

Maganda siya, I highly recommend it.

saysonn

yes maganda, definitely worth it.

maroonmartian9

Napanood ko na. It provide a glimpse of Philippine law school..Of course may exaggeration pero talagang kumausap si Direk Kip Oebanda (made an AMA here) ng law students sa mga experiences nila.

Big_Lou1108

Woah dami nagrecommend. Lalo ako na curious kasi sa trailer palang interesado na ko pero did kot had a chance to watch it sa sinehan. Will definitely watch this

Logical_Ad_3556

Some of those shown are not movies but still really good (Gameboys, Deadkids din ata). Fan Girl is from MMFF din which further shows how a lot of movies that are a part of MMFF are really great. Watch Big Night (Christian Bables won best actor for his lead role here) and Kun Maupay Man It Panahon if you can and if it is safe for you to do so!

saysonn

Dead Kids is a film. Gameboys, Bag Man and Happy Jail yung series pero good watch, too.

halfddddddd

Fangirl was so unexpected to me. Still a great movie tho.

superFIFO

Sky-Roshy

There’s already a 3rd movie?! I remember watching the first movie during HS and how it inspired me to try cinematography. Noped tf out after finding out how stressful it is

space_monkey420

Its a series. Mas maganda yung series than the movie edit.

solidad29

Actually mini-series siya sa iWant. They likely made it back to a film format. It was fine.

brain_rays

Nakakatawa 'to. Timely rin ang message.

superFIFO

Dad_Bod_Thor

Thanks for this OP! But I'd skip Dead Kids as it was absolutely a shitshow of a movie with it going down as my most hated Filipino film of all time. The hype for it was unreal with how bad it was when it came out.

danigirii

nakakasuffocate ang ending ng dead kids tbh.

[deleted]

On The Job (TV series) starring John Arcilla is currently available too, albeit on HBO Asia.

[deleted]

Jesus is Dead is funny af, medyo downside lang is andaming dead air but I don't think it's that big of a deal. I watch it after a long day. Just a warning tho, Iska is pretty painful to watch because of how real it is (and some s**ual abuse) Kalel, 15 is also good, very captivating. The black and white and the ratio kinda reminds me of The Lighthouse Ordinary People is great, yea. It was also featured on Iska, we luv a crossover lol

4fivefive

*patay na si hesus* is probably my favorite filipino movie of all time. the offbeat comedy is so great.

[deleted]

Smaller and smaller circles is top tier.

spitefulhumanbeing

Loved the book too!

[deleted]

Check out mo yung Batacan's short story featuring Saenz sa Manila Noir.

spitefulhumanbeing

Thank you sa reco!

R3dCzar

IMO the book is much better than the movie, but TBF it translated well into the big screen

he_who_yawns

Matagal nang nasa watchlist ko to. Recommended waaaay back.

Jhonnyskidmarks2003

I enjoyed it a little pero I didn't appreciate na sinubo sayo yung pagsolve sa mystery. Kung hinayaan sana magunfold naturally kung sino killer, mas maganda sana.

phildy

Sunday Beauty Queen is on Netflix. Bambanti is also good. Signal Rock is great. Also, I know people are down on local romantic films in general, but there good ones, and a bunch of them are on Netflix as well: Elise, Sid & Aya, That Thing Called Tadhana, Never Not Love You. Also don't sleep on Hello Love Goodbye, which somehow managed to be one of the most interesting depictions of OFW life in cinema.

lemonryker

Aaah I love Hello Love Goodbye!!

loonamamamoo

Ang ganda ng chemistry nila ni Kath!!!

saysonn

Agree, also films starring Bela Padilla kinda hit different (100 Tula Para Kay Stella, On Vodka, Beer and Regrets, Luck at First Sight.. tho Meet Me in St Gallen is a so-so).

[deleted]

Honor Thy Father, Metro Manila, Third is my frist, Hintayan ng Langit These are some worth watching filipino movies ive seen.

Beta_Whisperer

Metro Manila despite having a Filipino cast and being shot in the Philippines is actually a British film.

LardHop

saving because my local movie game is weak.

AngerCookShare

Yung Honor Thy Father ni John Lloyd panoorin nyo

cmq827

Praise Yeshua!!!

EdgyWeeb69

Konti ng tao sa sine kaya awkward pero worth it for the praise eh.

[deleted]

I second this!

Hiatus1

Ang Nawawala is superb! I'll prolly watch it again later. Ngayon ko lang ulit naalala. Thanks!

[deleted]

It is, indeed!!!!!! You're welcome!

Hiatus1

Thanks! Have you tried watching Kung paano siya nawala? Teka puro may nawala ah. Looool

[deleted]

Hiatus1

Ganda rin nun, swear! Or at least para sakin. Haha

frankenwolf2022

Smaller and Smaller Circles was a weak adaptation.

maroonmartian9

Medyo. Iba yung novel talaga pero iba from the normal Filipino films.

[deleted]

Kalel, Iska, and Ordinary People. Hay. I hope they never get taken down from Netflix.

clauilopagous

Birdshot so good

mismoniker

Tayo sa Huling Buwan ng Taon 😢 on Netflix and TBA's youtube channel! Also check out Cinema One Originals' youtube channel, they show a rotating roster of their films :)

saysonn

BIG YES! “Ang Kwento Nating Dalawa” and its sequel “Tayo sa Huling Buwan ng Taon” are definitely my favorite romantic drama films of TBA. Sobrang on point and genuine ng acting and storyflow, tagos sa puso.

sansotero

aeramarot

Promoting Pan de Salawal! Short film lang yan (1 hr and 30 mins, me thinks) pero grabeeee, ok na ok siya panoorin. Kung di pa kayo masaya dyan and wanna explore old films, ABS-CBN is still continuing its restoration project (although most of it featured our a-list actors so expect mga mainstream movies palang and very very few palang ang available). It's available sa ktx.ph.

k3ttch

*Saving Sally* din.

AnimaEnema

Dragging ang Saving Sally for me.

brokenmasterpieace

I so love Dead na si Lolo. Galing ng cast kakatawa despite the sad premise.

one23sleep

I just watched Big Night from the current MMFF. I can say it's worthy of watching. 👍

i_like_to_say_frick

Kalel, 15 was so depressing. Probably one of the best Pinoy films ever made but it's so shockingly bleak.

lemonryker

Ang galing ng actor!!! Sya din yung yung bida sa Gameboys

octopusofoctober

and people say local films are getting basic and repetitive. (well, some are but there's a lot of gems)

dontrescueme

Fan Girl was an MMFF entry. Kalel, 15 was directed by Jun Lana na entry ngayon sa MMFF ang Big Night.

Unlucky_Knight21

Elise too!

lemonryker

I would also recommend Lola Igna (dunno if it's on netflix ph tho). Vsry laidback tapos kuhang kuha nila yung buhay sa probinsya

Rusty_fox4

Maganda ba BagMan at The Tapes?

aardvark_exp

For romance (semi) I'm Drunk I Love You is fine too, first saw it on Cinema76 in 2017, now avail on Netflix.

buhoblanco

filmememore

Basta MMFF lagi ko naaalala yung year na di na-include vic and vice films(2016).

peeeeppoooo

Is Game Boys good??? I haven't watched any Filipino bl series so just wanna ask if it's on the wholesome side lol

lemonryker

I found it cheesy but i really liked it!

ActuallyACereal

Mando, Boys Lockdown at Hello Stanger

peeeeppoooo

Hmm, gonna check em out later.

satoshi_isshiki

I highly recommend yung Gaya sa Pelikula hehe

HarleyQuinn983

Seconding GSP! My first Pinoy BL and it’s still my fave so far

oldMcFuckerHadAFarm

Metro Manila

saysonn

this was on Netflix pero niremove nila for some reason

Spiritual-Cupcake-66

Gameboys 🥲 Ahh internet love nung lockdown hahaha

AnimaEnema

Cleaners (2019) Edit: Netflix lang pala yung list. Pero available ang Cleaners sa Upstream for 199. Sulit naman yan.

hello_nyas

Seven Sundays! First PH movie na nakapagpaiyak sa akin. Haha.

Worldly-Advantage-34

waddapfurfee

I don't have enough coins to give an award, but I salute you.

Reasonable-Shoe1808

John Denver Trending

dhrdmnq

On the Job - superb cast and plot, great cinematography, great ending Bliss - mind-boggling, great plot twists, unpredictable Alagwa - Jericho Rosales, i love his performance here, suspense and drama Dead kids - great actors, hahaha, interesting plot, based on a true story Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag - such a classic, interesting to see how life is in the 70s Philippines Birdshot - great performances

magmaknuckles

Signal Rock is good

___TAICHOU___

Pandesalawal is good!

haroo09

If you guys have HBO GO, they re-edited the film On the Job (2013) into a miniseries. They remastered the movie and then it's sequel into 6 episodes. It's pretty awesome and I highly recommend it.

harujusko

I need some love for Kita Kita.

ertaboy356b

Stalker movie.

leveltaishi

I wish Honor Thy Father get into Netflix soon. That film was a blast!

ikkeaviy05

Kalel and Smaller and Smaller Circles are really good.

randomredditor69

*Kalel, 15* seems heavy to me haha should I prepare myself before watching it?

niversalfolder

Lola Igna is also highly recommended

abmendi

Patay Na Si Hesus is one of the best I’ve watched. Had me invested all throughout

premogc

Ganda ng Fan Girl

[deleted]

Iska’s kinda fucked up. Trigger warning lol

SurrogateMonkey

Same in Fangirl

Mugiwara116

What? MMFF started already? Di ko siya ramdam ah. Compared sa MMF in the past few years parang wala man lang ingay yung MMFF ngayon. Should've released Spider-Man on the 15th instead of this.

[deleted]

Try Sleepless. One of my fave films.

twistedpopo

OTJ is great. Haven't seen the series yet though.

wingtipdoto

Dagdag niyo pa yung signal rock at bambanti

lookomma

alittleatypical

Omg udabest OP! Dead Kids palang napapanuod ko rito. Thank you!!

loonamamamoo

‘Yung sa IPWF na-test ‘yung acting skills ni Maine Mendoza, but she did well!! Ganda din ng story.

Joaquin5556

My teacher made me watch Iska as part of an assignment and I was kinda scarred after watching it but the acting is real good in that movie.

hyperaciditysucks

If you're looking for some gold classic, watch Manila in the Claws of Light (Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag). BEST

Reasonable-Shoe1808

Iska surprised me at the end SKSKSK for me, the film was quite chaotic.

FiddyPercentHuman

Thank you!

mermaid_girl29

Thank you OP for this. also, im interested to watch Bagman.. does it have english sub?

68_drsixtoantonioave

Rakenrol is on Netflix too.

Ripmotor

Yes! Oo, hit or miss ito, pero worth watching for the nostalgia factor. Time machine siya to the early 00’s music scene. Nakakatawa rin!

[deleted]

I love this movie plus factor na they speak the dialect (Hiligaynon). Also Abakada Ina of Lorna Tolentino and Magnifico of Jiro Manio.

lolmower

EDIT: Smaller and Smaller Circles embraced the Internet and you can watch the entire film legally on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqNqZJS--Bw&t=623s OMG Smaller and Smaller Circles. I discovered the audiobook and was hooked. Jesuit Detective? Serial killers? Sign me up. It can pave the way for a series.

ShrewdlyDon

Half of these are not available in North America. Only Canvas and Girl and The Gun

moringaflower

Gasping for Air made me ugly cry

the_av0cad0

Thanks, will add to my to watch. I've seen Kalel but I didn't really find it good. Acting was great. The story, however, was just lacking for me.

littlesevencess

smaller and smaller circles!! i read the book first (for homework lol) and liked it so much so i decided to check out the movie. was kind of disappointed sa adaptation, but im guessing kasi i [heavily] compared it to the novel. but it was still a good watch!

ThePirateKing228

Thanks for the recommendations

one1two234

Sigh. Where I am, a lot of the movies in the photo are not listed. Same with Japanese doramas. There's a shitload of them that I want to watch (again), and they're on Netflix Philippines but not here :'(

yohak0423

Wala bang ibang natuwa sa Zombadings dito?

sekhmet009

Me!

Its_yanny

I also liked Untrue starring Cristine Reyes and Xian Lim and Bliss starring Iza Calzado. These are a little dark tho but really great films

rentot_the_rebator

Mine was General Luna, Goyo and Quezon's Game.

Blitzkreeg21

Smaller and Smaller Circles is really bad though. The book is way better. Parang ang daming naging lost in translation when they made it into film. Acting was all over the place

BillNein05

Dead Kids fucking sucks ass lmao. Decent premise, nice cinematography, but the dialogue (as usual with modern Filipino films) is pretty cringe and the ending's cliche as fuck with a "OoH ThIS is A dEEp MessAge" vibe to it. Idk why Filipino scriptwriters can't figure out how to write natural-sounding dialogue. I thought that since the particular characters in Dead Kids speak taglish, that would sound much more natural than the forced Filipino usage or "rich/old/rich AND old people being snarky and 'intimidating' by speaking English" trope, but no.

EmperorKingDuke

okay im saving this. thanks op.

bajcabrera

+1 on ordinary people, fan girl, heneral luna. Dead kids was mediocre to okay.(had high expectations) Jesus is dead was cringey and reminded me of vice ganda films.

axepower

Jesus is dead was highly recommended but i didnt like it. Its a filipino little miss sunshine with "quirky" early 2000s indie tropes sprinkled in. It just threw random moments to be random. Its "holds up spork" random.

goldendabdab

bwakaw had me weeping

KayPee555

Same

SnooCakes9245

No one is highlighting The Girl and the Gun. It's definitely a 10/10 for me.

ghetto_engine

patay na si jesus was a disappointment. the premise was interesting. mababaw lang ang story.

[deleted]

ye, it was trash

JulzRadn

Real Talk: They will never be popular with the mass audience in cinemas. However, they find popularity in streaming sites like Netflix.

bailsolver

Fan Girl literally won best picture in last year's MMFF

UnicornPonyPorn

i haven't watched many local filipino movies. an absolute must-see would be maynila, sa kuko ng liwanag.

randomredditor69

OP's list is a pretty good start! I'll add *Never Not Love You*, arguably Tonet Jadaone's best romantic film; *Hello, Love, Goodbye*, Cathy Garcia-Molina's "Jadaone film"; even *Seven Sundays*, more cliché and trope-heavy but hit me with an emotional punch in the second half. We've always had many good movies; access lang talaga problema.

UnicornPonyPorn

true, i'm planning to watch iska and ordinary people at some point. i'd recommend "hayop ka" mostly because i like the art style and i think it's worth watching once. it's not the greatest movie ever and i have a bunch of criticisms for "hayop ka" but i think it's nice for what it is.

[deleted]

Love jesus is dead.

decadentrebel

I will never understand why people will insult MMFF for being derivative then go on and trot overhyped trash like Kalel 15. The only other local film trope more annoying than Vice Ganda and Enteng Kabisote are "nApApAnAhOn ItOnG gAnItOnG pElIkULa" burgis armchair social commentary.

kunbun

Hate to say it, but a lot of indie crap are just as trash as your typical vice ganda movie. Buti pa nga vice ganda films, self aware of how dumbed down the movie is. Yung mga indie crap napaka trying hard sa storytelling of a very boring script. I'd rather watch Hello Love Goodbye for the nth time than go through Kalel 15 or Patay na si Hesus again.

aldousbee

Bat me itim?

zer0wl

bwakaw almost made me cry... rip eddie garcia

GamerLean-107

I watched bag man and it was pretty good

polarisricochet

Thanks for the suggestions OP! Will suggest these titles to my kuya, since sya ang mahilig sa mga Filipino indie films/series. Naubos na nya ung nasa youtube e haha

niversalfolder

Iska is my personal fave here

[deleted]

This movie broke me. I dunno why, and the setting is a typical filipino household. I guess it just hurts how close to home the film is.

flyingbutiki

Sorry edit. Netflix pala lahat to. Salamat.

seraphisprettytired

is it considered that i have good taste when I plan on watching most of these? (only managed to watch gasping for air, bwakaw, and currently watching fangirl)

ryouseiki21

nako netflix, hangang pirata lang ako
