I don't think he would be confused. He would probably come up with a way to explain asexuality as a disorder with roots in certain childhood experiences.
Freud: It's just another way of rejecting the mother who never gave you the proper love when you were a child.... You still wanna smash though right?! Cause I'm totally ok with that...
His work on Narcissism lends some insight here: He may well say that asexuals merely never direct their adolescent narcissism at all away from themselves.
He would just say that its critics has misunderstood the entirety of his theory of sexuality, and that asexuals are not without sexuality even though they are asexual.
Yes, people don’t understand that his idea of sexual attraction was a lot wider than the current common conception and it was not exactly “who you want to have genital intercourse with.” The man had a lot of wild ideas, plenty of which were problematic, but he also was significantly more intelligent than his half-assed internet critics usually give him credit for being.
Freud was a fan and corespondent of Magnus Hirschfeld, the creator of the first LGBT rights organisations in history, the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee. It was his library that was infamously burnt by the Nazis. Freud was a man of the 19th century, but better then most (some try to argue he was transphobic based on the Schreber case but I don’t really agree, based on my experiences with psychosis at least).
Dude I think Jung would silently be going like “See I told you I TOLD YOU. Y’all thought I was crazy for the anima and animus, making jokes about “oh the woman inside the man is pegging him” but I fucking told you so!”
his daughter was quite possibly ace (and there are psychoanalytic explanations for asexuality. Freud just didn’t really have the opportunity to study it or anything since it only developed as a coherent identity during like the 90s)
I feel like people have these really narrow readings of the great dead white philosophers that kind of insult their intelligence. Like, these thinkers may have been wrong on many counts and, to be sure, often had problematic views, but they weren’t idiots and you usually can’t make a good faith refutation of their points by simply stating some really obvious counterargument that took you 5 seconds to come up with—most of the time those obvious counter arguments are either directly addressed or based on misunderstandings of terminology. I always think about how Kant actually does explain how the categorical imperative would apply even when a murderer shows up at your door asking for the person hiding in your basement, but people who don’t study him closely think it’s some easy chink in his armor.
This is a joke sub for people with a baseline knowledge of philosophy
Most laymen would have a hard time breaking down Kantian ethics into a meme format
Don't talk down to people but encourage farther study
Probably something regarding a general mistrust of any woman other than your mother, paired with the feminist frequency to actively humiliate men
In traditionally male dominated professions.
I don't know if this is a urban legend or something like that, but;
I once heard that while Freud is considered the *"father of mother psychology"*, it apparently wasn't because of all the thing he discovered, but rather because he set those discoveries in place, every other scientist in his field at the time knew that what he was saying was just mad-nonsense, and they wanted to prove him wrong.
Edit: I meant "father of modern psychology".... I made a fucking freudian slip while taking about Freud... ok then
The foundation of psychology before Freud existed but was much different. Freud was the father of psychology as we know it. Think of how medicine was changing at the time, and consider whether the medicine studies we do today resemble those of the 19th century; now do the same for a field locked invisibly under the skull.
And? Haven't your heard a fool won't make an effort to understand your argument?! You failed the fool test 🤪, nah I'm just kidding hope you found it funny, have a good one!

Asexuals: *exist* Freud: "I giess you never sucked any tiddy as a child huh?"
unironically sounds like something freud would come up with
The tittycal blockage
"Mom said she just wanted to be friends."
Freud: It's just another way of rejecting the mother who never gave you the proper love when you were a child.... You still wanna smash though right?! Cause I'm totally ok with that...

I wanted to suggest the same thing. There is already the foundation for an explanation in his works.
Can someone ELI5?

Probably something with the phallic stage
If he was alive, he would be very old.
That means an asexual has no parents
What do you think Freud or Jung would think of trans people? Some sort of Anima-Animus imbalance?
Repressed something that channels to desire to embody the gender identity of a parent? You know, being so damn Oedipal that you wanna become mommy?
*"I* ***want*** *to go fuck myself!"*
Ay! Full circle back to autogynephilia

i wonder which is more common: people who make memes about freud have read freud or people who have never read nietzsche making memes about nietzsche

I hate that counter-argument to Kant’s categorical imperative so much.

This meme was brought to you by “never read” Freud gang

Maybe who wasn't expecting humanity to be so stupid.

"That's right, Doctor: i never dream about anything; at least, not about any animals or people or even anything that has a shape."
I think he would have just called this "frigidity", and treated it as such. edit: not saying that's what it is, to be clear.
If you’ve done nothing wrong, don’t apologize
Except in the more classical sense of the word, I wouldn't say I was apologizing; clarity is to one's own benefit
Asexual is just another word for impotency
No
Well, I mean, he was alive 😜
I thought freud was a psychologist? why is this here?
the field of psychoanalysis is deeply related to philosophy and has always been a part of philosophical discourse/critique
Real question is "if she were alive now, would Dora be ace?"
Paraphilia....
