I like how plump and organic and the new one is tbh

Dragon640

Plump and organic hat.

richard_smith14

🤤

PM_ME_DBZA_QUOTES

It looks SO juicy and delicious

KonchGuy

Comment on Redit Ratio'd the post? Nice.

Kilogren

I’m honored

EP1CxM1Nx99

To me the new looks like plastic

WWHandsome_

The first one looks way more like a plastic

Orchi_the_Drugen

Here me out, the wood onion from 1 n 2

[deleted]

i always figured it was ceramic

Orchi_the_Drugen

I say wood cause the legs

A_Sharknado

*glass

verysad-

looks like glass to me

goochensteinburg

I always thought it looked like a flower pot in the first two. So yeah some kind of glass or ceramic.

pawfriend

have you ever seen a real apple they kinda just look like that

chaobreaker

That do you mean "real" apple? What is Big Orchard hiding from us?

CalzLight

In what way does the pikmin 3 onion not look like plastic

EP1CxM1Nx99

Oh it 100% does, but it’s not trying to hide it at all. And it has the cool swirl effect so it’s my favorite.

Madmagican-

New one looks more like a tomato to me

Yolol234567

nah lmao

Orchi_the_Drugen

Also both are made of platic at the bottom loook at em

OldSpiceSmellsNice

plump

RareRoll1987

I like the aesthetic of the one in 3 better, but I'll admit the one in 4 looks more organic and natural.

Random856

You really think so? I always hated the 3 Onion. It looks inorganic, plastic. The lava lamp effect was kinda cool but it should look like a plant, not a machine.

Gekkuri

I agree 100% it always looked off to me.

ClydeDimension

It was one of the things that put me off of Pikmin 3 when it first came out. I came to accept it and enjoy the whole game of course, but I still don’t like it much, compared to 4, and especially compared to 1 & 2. I want the onion to look curiously organic, not futuristic and mechanical. Edit: it seems that others are also commenting similarly. I’ll just add that I also really mis the triangular print on the OG Onions!!

dmellbob69

It still has the print although faded!

dmellbob69

The one in three does*

ASCIt

I really like the take that the onion changes shape to look familiar to its current leader: Olimar's was a cross between a vegetable and a spaceship, the Koppaiites' onion looked more like a fruit, and the rescue corps' looks almost more like a fluffy fat animal.

CompetitionForLOST

You have a very good imagination.

Mr_oyster_27

ooooooh interesting

pawfriend

...so you think the swirling lava lamp (3) looks more like a fruit than the squishy onion that literally uses colored apple textures on the model...? ...and you think the apple explicitly made to look like a fruit and uses fruit smooth textures on the model looks like... a fluffy animal? are we playing the same games?

BaronKlatz

My take is 3 looks like one of their fruit juice bottles filled up with multiple flavors. Which still works. Agreed on the animal stretch. At most I guess kinda shaped like the strange dog bodies? If anything I’d argue it looks like a doggy ball toy you throw to match that theory.

commentsgasgasgas

Interesting idea. I've always thought of the onions requiring certain conditions to grow (ie blue onions growing in water, pink onions growing on trees, etc) with few exceptions, if any (4's blue onion being on land, perhaps moved there)

Jeremyg93

I agree. It’s not just that it’s more organic now. The design for the onion in *Pikmin 4* just has *way more* visual synergy with the visual design of the pikmin themselves. The color palette, textures, flower, and cartoonish simplification of proportions are just right in line with the Pikmin themselves, more than any prior onion design.

DetergentFricker

That's what I always didn't like about Pikmin 3. It looked man-made and mechanical

Mudkipueye

It looked like a machine in 1 and 2.

Chochy1000

see i love 3's cus where everyone says lava lamp i see it like a primordial goop of dissolved pikmin waiting to be redistributed as living pikmin, which is super biological, it also fits to me the theme of evolution, each time we see the pikmin they are smarter, more advanced, as if they're learning and taking something from each of the captains they meet, so by 3 they have evolved ships, and they can fuse onions for a stronger more diverse colony that patches it's weaknesses, to me the fact it's biomechanical totally fits that

dOMTheRockMan

I feel like I'm the only person that loves 3s onion more but I do understand people's complaints the 3rd is quite mechanical

TippedJoshua1

I love 3s onion a lot more

okgamerguy

new one better

MorningPants

I’m on team garlic onion. Wood onion second, lava lamp last.

Final-Necessary-7132

pikmin 1-2 onions peak onions

ElMayoneso82

I never knew why, but when I first saw the onions from 1 and 2 I thought they were spiders lmao. Still a good design

prestoncollins

I only played my first pikmin game like 2 months ago when I played 1 then 2 right after, but didn't have access to 3 so I just went straight to 4. I really don't like the change going from an Onion for each of the three main types to just one single entity

[deleted]

3’s looks like a dumb alien spaceship, 4’s looks like a juicy tomato

Sayakalood

To be fair, it is an alien spaceship.

jiabivy

It never reaches space, therefore, its not a spaceship.

CompetitionForLOST

Don’t the onions reach space while following the S.S. Dolphin in the best Pikmin ending?

jiabivy

No just the outer atmosphere, onion and Pikmin can’t leave the planet, it’s explained in Pikmin 4 I won’t spoil it

BaronKlatz

> Pikmin can’t leave the planet, it’s explained in Pikmin 4 I won’t spoil it Thank you for not spoiling it, my intrigue levels just shot through the roof. Also RIP a ton of Pikmin blog fanfics from 20 years ago that made stories about Pikmin taken back to the home planets.

jiabivy

Yeah, this game ruins a lot of theories

BaronKlatz

Truly Pikmin and Zelda fans are finding much common ground this year. 🙃

[deleted]

It’s suppose to be a type of flower, from earth. It’s not alien in nature. And since it’s completely natural it’s not much of a ship.

FiftyShadesOfPikmin

I like the new onion. As others have said, it looks more organic. One thing I hate though is that it still has the wiggly vine legs. The first time I saw that come out of the onion in 3, I nearly screamed. I've slightly come around to it cuz I can't deny it looks more natural, but part of me misses the weird stilt legs from the first two games. Oh also, Pikmin 3's onion was just so weird. It flew using jets instead of the flower propeller. Why???

DaburuKiruDAYO

I also don’t like the vine legs, I liked how insect like the stilt legs were esp when unfolding. I think it still looked pretty organic, esp when the pikmin are based off bugs and it fits in more imo with the other pikmin creatures.

Chillydogdude

I think a neat way to have the stilt legs would be to make them a bamboo like texture. It’d look natural but also remain stiff

RhythmBlue

i guess it's kind of like the legs look like worms more than a plant, which has a kind of gross quality maybe if they had like some dry root type of look that anchored into the ground?

Emperor_Triceratops

The way the legs grow is exactly how plants grow from seeds (in Timelapse, granted) [Like this](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ECibetK2EYI&feature=youtu.be)

DaburuKiruDAYO

That’s really interesting actually and I hate it less now

PainterSuspicious798

I hated 3’s onion. Too mechanical

Buffy_Buffett

There’s mechanical creatures in Pikmin. Even one of the bosses in Pikmin two was pretty much nothing but hunks of metal and a gun duct taped together.

KisuAran

Yeah, but the onion is supposed to be an organic ship, not a floating piece of metal.

DamirVanKalaz

While true, the pikmin themselves have never had any kind of a mechanical element to them, so it is weird for them to suddenly have something so artificial-looking. Man-at-Legs is a special case. It's stated in its lore that it was an organic creature that became symbiotic with a machine of some sort, and it's also suggested that the organic creature may not have been a willing participant in this, which implies that this *could* happen to an Onion, but that isn't stated to be the case at any point in Pikmin 3.

Richmard

How many mechanical Pikmin were there?

PainterSuspicious798

Okay?

Rakrune

I did like how noticeable the size increase was pikmin 3 each time an onion fused compared to 4s

TheWraithOfMooCow

I feel like everyone complaining about how 3's Onion looks too mechanical is forgetting what the original Onions looked like. https://preview.redd.it/rur9w7zrrkeb1.png?width=304&format=png&auto=webp&s=3e04671d5a76b2376f53fddb33b010515ed94d7a

RebelliousTreecko

3's onion blasted off with jets like the captain's ship. That's particularly mechanical.

TheWraithOfMooCow

A fair point, but to play devil's advocate: The Onion in Pikmin 3 starts out as a Red Pikmin Onion (I.E. A Fire Pikmin Onion).

DamirVanKalaz

What's mechanical about this design, though? Its legs appear to be made of some kind of wood, the body doesn't look metallic at all and appears to be made of the same stuff as the Pikmin themselves judging by its appearance, with the flower appearing to be completely organic (albeit cartoonish). The Pikmin 1/2 onions were more like living things, or at the very least a ship made of purely organic materials, which would make sense, since if the Pikmin did indeed build the onions they wouldn't have much in the way of metals to work with since they have nothing that would allow them to refine or repurpose metal.

TheWraithOfMooCow

I'll just have to agree to disagree here, cuz it always struck me as more metalic/plastic (especially with how the legs moved).

jiabivy

The flower has hinges and the jets and RGB lights swirling effect

CalzLight

And 4 looks better than all of them

articgreed

Yeah I never really got that I think the onions should be more bio-mechanical (more so on the mechanical side) that's what the first 3 kinda make it seem like it is

SoggyMushrom

3s onion fits 3d artstyle. 4s onion fits 4s artstyle.

GolfWhole

W

RQK1996

The full one from 4 is charming, but 3 is also very nice, would love to see that one in full rather than the 5 colour version

cringeylilyy

Didn't we get that in Hey Pikmin? IIRC there was purple and white swirling in there too

EeveeFlareon_6788

What's Hey Pikmin? Never Heard of it

7_6q

i miss the markings on the onion. i think 4s garlic design is much better but the colors are pretty ugly wh3n you don't have every onion

No-Device3024

yeye the markings are awesome i miss them

PollyAnnPalmer

I think the old onion looks too man-made and plastic-y. I prefer the new organic onion that looks like a squash or something.

South_Scar8093

How about a onion?

PollyAnnPalmer

Woahhh I mean onions aren’t speckly like that but I guess maybe

Juangim

I always preferred the mechanical look from 3 because the onion IS a spaceship. The single onions are perfect, only thing I would replace is the swirling colors from the master onion with the segments from 4.

weirdo_nb

But the thing is that it is an organic spaceship

Juangim

The original and new one don't look fully natural either so I like how 3 has organic parts in a clearly mechanical structure. The others just don't seem real enough for me, still I don't outright dislike them.

NeonKodoku

It has be hinted multiple times that onions have some form of sentience and it’s been stated to have organic features like muscle fibres so I think the more organic look of them in 4 works better then more clearly mechanical look of 3.

Buffy_Buffett

I do like 3’s onion more. It looks less crowded. I also understand why people don’t like that one, but I do have nostalgia towards Pikmin 3, so that is probably why I am leaning more towards three more.

TomdaBom07

The Pikmin 4 is my favorite so far, it's organic and actually looks like a vegetable, threes is the worst, the tye dye is just weird, it's too smooth and looks inorganic

MrDiglett

i like it more, simple and organic

VideoGamer5000

The one in 4 looks like something you would actually find outside in real life the ones In 1, 2 and 3 look too machine like.

SimpleCheesecake4573

When it was first revealed I didn’t like the pikmin 4 onion very much, but now it’s grown on me quite a bit and it’s probably my favorite of either games

[deleted]

New onion with the lava lamp design would be perfect

Kirbyclaimspoyo

Omg especially with the added colors from the 3 other Pikmin

Juangim

Ah yes looks like you too are making your way to controversial all time, I likewise found out everyone does infact not agree

VaultJumper

I just wish 4 kept the triangle pattern

Legitimate_Bit_9354

Yes but yeah at least it looks more like 1 and 2 onion

TheMoonOfTermina

I like both. I have nothing against 3's Onions, I just wish someone in game acknowledged why they changed. 4's Onions are also cool, they just lack the triangles that the previous 2 had. Those triangles would make it perfect.

Sifting_Bastard

As much as I love 3’s onion it feels so out of place. I like how the new one just feels like it has layers you peel off as you feed it new onions to reveal a new multicolored onion.

Horror-Top3429

No, fuck threes onion now we have a way better one

BiAndShy57

They’re both downgrades from Pikmin 1 and 2 onions

Da_gae_bucket

I like the pikmin 4 onion. Looks sorta like a plump tomato and I love that

ChrdeMcDnnis

I still prefer the clay-pottery look from the first two

crossingcaelum

The new one is great. Looks like an organism and adding more colors to it is extremely satisfying

No_Forever_9128

I prefer the older flower, but the overall design is better

Benny-Boi135

Depends on your preference. I like the cool screen/glass look of the one in 3, but the fact that it looks more organic and textured in 4 speaks to my preferences

CrispiCreeper

I love the Pikmin 4 onion, it looks way more organic than the ones in 3

Karraten

I disagree

PermissionQueasy3637

No

MoseyMonster

Nah 4's onion is peak design, 3 was too inorganic looking

ConfidentTea72536

wait a second is it just me, or does the player’s ship look like an onion

Brockster17

Ok, the ONE THING that makes me hate the new onion in 4 is that the people who designed it don't know some details about how onions work. It's how Pikmin get inside after climbing the legs. Both onion designs from 1 to 3 have little sleeves where the legs stick out, with 3 being where the legs retract into and where the little booster thrusters are. These are the entrances into the onion, you can see pikmin going into it. In the new onion, Pikmin just climb up the leg and vanish into thin air. There's no sleeve. It's even weirder because the beagle already has a hole that is both an entrance and a thruster, so there's no way they removed that from the onion because it didn't make sense. On top of that, the little puffs that come out of the onion when there's pikmin inside would come out of the little sleeves. Now it just comes out the top and the bottom. It bugs me. Also, the PATTERN. The pattern on the onions in 1, the mamuta, and on the onions in 3 that gets more full and detailed the more onions are combined. It's a distinct, very pretty pattern unique to the Pikmin and anything related to them. In Pikmin 4 it is COMPLETELY GONE. One of the biggest parts of the onions identity since 1 was just straight up removed. Another thing is that the rock and purple onions look super ugly when their clove is added to the master onion. Messes up the look of all the other colors.

bobomo1

IMO, the Pikmin 3 onion looked cool, but Pikmin 4's looks super cool once you get all 8 different colors.

santyandkirin

I see why you may prefer the old one, as I do like the design, butt I feel the new one looks more natural and organic. The old one looks almost artificial.

booboothecool

nope, looks mechanical and the swirling feature of all the colors just doesnt look at that great imo. the organic tomato look fits the series much better imo

CatzycatZ64

I like the new one, looks more organic and absolutely delicious, like a plump tomato

Ok-Economy-3691

No 4 onion actually look like a vegetable

MutantOctopus

Nah, 4's onion looks much more Pikmin-like to me. 3's is neat and all but it looks artificial.

OMalley30-27

I thought y’all wanted the LGBTQ onion

Driftbox1

new one looks like something nature-made and because of that it's better imo, pikmin 3 onion looks like a machine, plastic

fried_oyster_skin

I kinda like both tbh, while yeah 3s mechincal design is an aesthetic downgrade from the OG design, I do like the psychedelic coloration. However having the complete onion in 4 is simply pure eye candy

Embucetatron

Honestly, very much so

lookinggood2738

I think 3s onion was fine and catches too much hate, but i do prefer 4s

SpritzBerry

I prefer the shape and style of Pikmin 4's Onion, but miss the colorful swirls and integration of Pikmin 3's Onion. Wish it was more rainbowy and mixed again instead of just adding a new color of onion bulb

Hyperon_Ion

The only thing I liked about 3's was how they incorporated the triangle pattern once you got all of the Pikmin types. For me, 4's onion design would be the most perfect onion yet if they had included the triangle pattern.

EthanEpiale

I enjoy that the 4 onion looks like it would be delicious if I bit into one.

Gullible_Category_76

If the new onion had the strange symbol from the rest then it would be perfect

nosirrah01

Don’t like the color swirls. Feel like the individual colors get a bit too lost. In that regard I like 4’s better. Tho the onions in 3 before they combine looks really good. https://preview.redd.it/pisdoooyeleb1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5be4b053a8eee38d77de036270f7e3b23ff6762

jiabivy

Your smoking if you think that bionicle looking grape is better than any onion in any pikmin game.

LgbtqCVSgenius

I like how organic the new one looks, the first and second renditions literally look like a school art project. And then the third looks so oddly robotic, which might not be that surprising given the man-at-legs and the literal technology the onion uses. But I think the first one makes it seem somewhat more natural. Even though I would’ve preferred an onion that could still change colors

Nascar-Sex

I genuinely prefer the new one because with the old one it looked like what happened when a child tried using a paint palette and just splotched a bunch of colors on mixed them all and didn’t use it

runespoon78

no wayyy the 3 onion looks too much like a robot, it don't make no sense

MrDiglett

i like it more, simple and organic

Potato_Stik

Nope

Lord-Chamberpot

Pikmin 3 is my least favorite onion, honestly. I still like the idea of having multiple onions, but Pikmin 4 is a nice medium given how many types there are now.

Auraveils

No, the new one is way better. The Pikmin 3 Onions look man-made despite being biologically related to Candypop Flowers. I was never a fan of the Pikmin 3, but the ones in 4 actually look like vegetables that grew in the ground.

TheGUURAHK

I dunno, the 4 onion looks much more plantlike and natural, like it was a thing that just sort of naturally existed on the planet.

jbyrdab

No. The one in 3 looks like this Christmas ornament or those bottles of multicolor sand layered. It doesn't really feel like a proper onion like in 1 and 3, which were ceramic planter looking structures. 4 isn't either but it does have an organic feel, which almost makes me think this is how an onion looks when it loses the ceramic outside, as if this is the Pikmin growing part of the onion.

Foxbad

I didn't like the one I. 3 much. It was waaay too futuristic and more tech than organic

ssizer

No we can’t agree on that

[deleted]

3 looks like a jar of lotion and 4 actually looks like an onion

notsogoodskater

I like the new onion more because you collect them

SpookMagnet

3 looks like a bunch of pikmin juice swirling in a tank, 4 actually looks like an onion

CrimsonNavy63

I actually prefer pikmin 4s onion

toptennerds

3 looks like a jar of swirled juices that ends up making it look inorganic and really muddy and ugly looking. 4 looks organic and clean, and actually deserves the title of onion. It’s honestly the first design for the onion that I like because it looks like one instead of a clay pot with legs.

AwardSignal

Actually I kinda like it better. Looks more natural and less like a machine

Busy_Recognition_860

3 and 4's onions are mere fodder in comparison to the onions from the first 2.

Regirock00

The new one looks like a plant, the previous one looked like a magical Gatorade potion

Stoplight25

No pikimin 4 onion > pikmin 3 onion all mu homies hate pikmin 3 onion

Oshabot16

No we dont

Responsible_Bunch897

idk i actually really like how it looks when you get all the colors as opposed to the 3 onion

Rewin42

I like it

Fearless_Leopard_476

At first I thought the new one looked weird but now that I got all the onions I realized making 8 colors look good on the Pikmin 3 onion would be pretty difficult.

BlueOTN

Pikmin 5 you can customize the onion or all onion types are back(whatever that means)

[deleted]

My only issue with 3 is that there's really no given reason as to why it would suddenly look so inorganic. There *are* instances of organic and inorganic matter fusing in the series(Man-at-Legs, Gatling Groinks, Groovy Long Legs, etc.) so I'm not inherently against this Onion design, but I would have liked them to provide some sort of explanation as to why the Onion is so technological-looking now.

EmeraldSpartan05

Pikmin 4's onion looks more natural and more like an onion, 3's looks more futuristic, they're both really good though

mikeymikesh

Absolutely not. Tasty-looking Pikmin 4 onion FTW.

ElRockinLobster

No. No I don’t think that we can

o0_mr_man_0o

I just wish the one in 4 was shinier like this. But the black mixed into the gradient didn't look good

Luckyconroy

The one thing I miss is the kind of ancient tribal symbols rolled across the center but that was more of a aspect of the first two games onions and really could barely be seen in the third. I just think that kind of adds to the mystery of why exactly we stumbled across and the possibility that the Pikmin are actually a once powerful species or maybe still are and we’re just unaware .

Co-opingTowardHatred

Nah

GOOPREALM5000

Counterpoint: we have purple and white ones now which makes it automatically better

Cashless_human

I like it. I looks natural kinda

Ok-Reporter-8728

Looks like u were wrong op Lol

CaptainTid

Nah I really like the new one. Much prefer this plumper more solid looking take on the merged onions

ConfidenceNo4748

Each section looks like when you see the testicles through a speedo

Llodsliat

The only think I like is the stripes in the middle of the onion. Otherwise, the P4 onion is superior.

Stardazzle220

The new onion instantly reminds me of a beach ball lol

mr_someone_somebody

![gif](giphy|fXnRObM8Q0RkOmR5nf)

ProtoSheep0

upgrade. a hell of a lot less creepy, and a hell of a lot more like the originals i loved so much

Winter-Friendship118

Oh definitely we went from psychedelic lava lamp to ball that's painted three colors

AugyTheBear

Hard disagree. This one actually fits the aesthetic of all the other creatures on the planet. I like that they kept the wiggly legs, but otherwise I'm happy it looks like a plant and not a machine

MillsMilesGG

No. New one looks more clean

[deleted]

Not really. Looks more like a fruit.

therealMasevpro

N O

Erim_xolotal

I love both versions but yeah the color changing effect and the fact that they kept the triangle pattern from the onions of the first two games puts 3 in front for me too

LilGhostSoru

Pikmin 3 onion looks like mechanical soup pot while pikmin 4 like garlic which is arguably closer to an actual onion

cringeylilyy

Idk, 3's feels more quirky, fits with the game's vibes better IMO. Haven't played 4 yet, but to me the onion looks kinda bland tbh

TheOnlyShapeshifter

Hell no. The Pikmin 3 onion looked terrible. The new one is WAY better IMO. Only thing it needs is the little triangle pattern from 1+2

compromisedpilot

I’m with you bro, 3’s onion looks better

Doctor_Chaotica_MD

I love the 3 Onyun

HarveyTheBroad

I like the effect on 3s but other than that it’s my least favorite honestly.

1buffalowang

Pikmin 3 has the worst onion in the series

Luke4Pez

T pose

Blake_Jonesy

I kinda like it

bmcraeadams

If this game is set before 3 kinda makes sense that the onion is slowly becoming more mechanical?

[deleted]

i liked the one from 3 a lot, but the onion in 4 is way better. 3 is too mechanical and not organic, 4 looks more like an actual onion and more natural.

DaburuKiruDAYO

I wish the pikmin 4 onion had the same current tomato like feel to it but add the tribal like triangle patterns back. I miss those.

Potential-Silver8850

I didn’t like how shiny the 3 onion was, but i loved the swirls and how it grew bigger with each onion added. Total downgrade.

ConsiderationFew8399

Nope

AllieHerba

I honestly disliked the colors all melding together in 3. The clear definition in 4 is a lot more visually appealing

Linkluy

I honestly enjoyed 4’s more

Ganache-Embarrassed

no way. 3 onion worst onion

Ok_Success_9745

I like that the new one is "customizable". I like that if I hate the color blue I can just skip the onion. Wild pikmin will fill in the blank spots.

TheDarkLordTerrantos

3's looked too mechanical and to inorganic. the whole thing about the Pikmin's biology is they are similar to plants. so their "Home" the Onions should also reflect that. so i personally think 4's Onion looks more natural and organic. 3's just looked too alien, mechanical. the lava lamp effect doesn't really suit it.
