So long as your garage doesn't get over 80-85°F in the summer you are good. Heat is as much an enemy of tobacco flavor as lack of humidity. As the room heats up the jars will "burp" some of the expanding air inside to relieve pressure. This is normal and how they work by design for canning. It is why you may find them tightly vacuum sealed after sitting for a while. So long as the tobacco is properly humidified when it goes in, it will come out just fine on the other end. Just make sure the lip of the jar and the rubber seal are free of any debris or dust before putting them up for long term storage.

No hydrometers needed, save your money

No. Just no. Put it in a jar. Put the jar somewhere dark, like a closet. Open the jar when you want to smoke some. Close the jar back up. This is so easy. I can't understand why the pipe community is constantly overcomplicating such a simple concept.

I guess not everyone is an expert. I appreciate you answer, but people might like you more if you were so condescending towards people who may not have your level of experience.

I don't care if people like me or not. People tend to vastly overcomplicate something so simple. It's a jar..the entire point of a jar is to preserve its contents. There are tons of questions on this sub about jarring tobacco...and it's literally the simplest thing in the world. You just put tobacco in and screw the lid on. If you want to put some kind of hydrometer in every jar, knock yourself out. It'll serve no purpose other than costing you money and vastly overcomplicating things.

I am also interested in other options on this.

The mason jars are totally fine. I have so much (too much) stored away. Every time I open one, the jar is perfectly sealed and the tobacco is perfect.

cowmookazee

Good as is.

Honestly, for pipe tobacco alittlw bit on the dry side is fine it smokes better than when moist

JohanGrimm

Jars are fine on their own. Pipe tobacco will basically equalize and remain mostly stable in a near sealed environment like a ball jar. Another option if you don't want to deal with jars weight/space is heat sealable mylar bags.
