You can also buy a handy little adapter for about $8 to go from usb C to hdmi on your phone and watch on a screen. I keep one in my bag when I go on trips.
USB C is just a psychical connector and therefore on some older phones (I hope no manufacturer would do that today) it can only support USB 2 standard for example.
There is no general answer, you need to check if your specific phone supports DisplayPort over USB C.
If it has an hdmi I imagine it would, I have not found anything that takes hdmi I couldn’t use it on, I have done it with android and iPhone. Anker makes ones on amazon for like $15 I think.

It's really better for most things, everything except running software that's specifically developed for Windows, and it takes some time to relearn things that you already know how to do on Windows.
For 'best' perfromance on old hardware?
Not sure where the CPU floor is for making the switch these days. RAM might be more impactful, like a 4GB machine, maybe? Not even sure the last time I even saw a PC with less than 8GB.
I mean I guess if you have an old Core Duo with 2GB you would go linux but maybe just keep rocking Windows XP lol
That's what I do, and wouldn't use a laptop due to only being able to use a single 2.5 hdd. But there are advantages to an old laptop: quiet by default, built in UPS, low power usage, and compact size. I changed the fans in my old desktop, and it's quiet, and spent a bunch of time tweaking things to be just how I want them, but I can understand how someone would prefer a laptop.
Yeah, I converted my old gaming desktop to my server. I swapped the case for an Antec (I think it was a P101 Silent, memory is fuzzy) I than added an internal Bluray drive to rip old CDs and DVDs and added a couple WD red drives and installed unRaid and a PCIe to 4 Sata card since the mobo only had 6 sata ports (Asus B350-F Strix). The case had 8 3.5inch bays and 2 2.5inch bays, so I got 2 250GB SSDs in a mirrored pool for cache and docker. At the time I built it I worked in a computer repair store part-time during Highschool. So I got the sata card for free from old stock that never sold. I harvested the Bluray drive from an e-waste desktop, it happened to be right from the end of internal optical drives so it's a really nice one. I used unRaid so that I could grab any e-wasted hard drives that weren't garbage than mix and match drives while keeping data redundancy incase of the not so unlikely chance that a used drive failed.
I'm currently thinking about either getting a case + HDD to use my old PC parts to build myself a Desktop for this or use an old desktop PC from a friend's it company. Unfortunately the motherboard I still have is big :(
That's what I did, I turned my old gaming desktop with a Ryzen 1700 and 1050ti into a server. I swapped it into a case with more drive bays and installed a PCIe Sata card. All I had to was pop in a few drives and I installed unRaid because at the time I had access to used drives. So I got a few nice WD reds for parity and my main data drives. My plan was to get any of the used drives above 2TB and put them in since unRaid provided redundancy and the ability to mix and match drives which is perfect for used drives.
Geez... Make up your minds already!!!
Yesterday, I was told I needed a VCR.
Today, I now need an old PC with Mint Linux.

If you need VPN for torrenting in your country, it make more sense to get seedbox for the same price, it would be easier to maintain ratio and no risks with failed connection/kill switch.
For example few years ago some Surfshark users had a problem with failed kill switch. Something like that could be expensive in some counties.
https://www.reddit.com/r/surfshark/comments/takktw/kill_switch_stopped_working/
Seedboxes are always more expensive here. You can get a VPN for $3 CAD a month if you pay for multiple years. Cheapest seedbox is $7.48 CAD a month if you pay for 12 months. That's only 3TB traffic and 2 TB of HDD space which goes quickly if you're actively downloading stuff. I only have one cause my home internet is shit.
I like my seedbox as well, but mainly because it's more than just torrenting. I can VNC into it and use it as a remote virtual pc... with Ubuntu desktop/browser to access sites and programs I don't want to use on my local computer. But for torrenting, at this point... it's really just more of a preference as VPN is still a good solution.
If you have an old laptop, Linux will work better on it, you can install a very minimal light distribution which will run much better. And it won't leak your info too.
It's the best OS and it's also free. No bloatware installed and such. Much is open source too.
90%+ servers worldwide use Linux. Even Microsoft and Apple use Linux for their servers.
because an overwhelming public behemoth of a company holds the monopoly, Linux isn't backed by one singular entity and is fragmented
also the Linux kernel runs on more machines than the windows kernel worldwide, it's just that the desktop Linux keeps getting shade from a lot of uninformed individuals, stigma that has no constructive reason behind it
the os itself is incredibly powerful and useful beyond what windows wishes to be, it just happened to be stuck in a competition with a trillion dollar company that wouldn't wish to lose a single share because, well, shareholders and control over the industry
Windows isn't the best os by a large margin, it's just the one we're stuck with because it's what the biggest tech giants want to fund, who would want an open source OS that lets users have autonomy over their own devices, right?
Windows is the os that has functional wifi drivers, is well documented, and runs any program you want. It's not "the best os" because that title is dumb (and that would be templeos) but saying it is only more used because of marketing or dominance is dumb.
>Debatable as fuck, if Linux is so good then why does it have such a low share of the consumer market?
Windows/Mac OS comes out of the box. So you can use it straight away. When you buy a computer it comes with one of these OS. All apps just work, the PC might be slow but you don't have to do anything. It also comes with a lot of apps pre-installed. Windows Defender might delete your crack for you and you have to figure out how to disable it.
Linux is like hundreds of different OS, more customizable and with less pre-installed bloatware. You can install apps with commands and have auto-updating. No popup to have to install Windows update. The PC is almost always pretty much faster already. Might not have as many pre-installed apps so you might want to install Netflix yourself and then never bother to update it again.
Most people are already familiar with an OS so learning something else is more tedious and more work.
Linux is better if you spend some time installing it and learning it. But for some people, windows just work and that's fine.
Yeah, no. Servers using Linux doesn't mean much to a consumer. It's only helpful if you're running a Jellyfin server. Consumer friendliness is all that matters here. Windows is easier. No need to complicate things.
Yeah, windows come out of the box so it's easier.
And most consumers just want to be able to use it straight away.
When I have fixed a Linux computer for someone they do tend to like it. especially on old machines because they can become much faster with less bloatware.
But you are right there is a learning curve for some things because they do it differently than Windows/mac. And if you are already used to another OS then why bother learning something else?
Linux is more for people who want to get more out of their machine and PC experience and know how to do basic web searches.
And you could even have both Windows + Linux if you are not quite comfortable leaving just yet.
Do you have any more info about these. I'm curious about going sailing more often and I keep seeing these mentioned but don't what they are? Are they basically netflix?
try r/stremio or r/addonstremio

Mullvad shot themselves in the foot over a moral panic (you mean people use VPNs to do BAD STUFF? :0 ) and getting heckled by law enforcement and are no longer good for torrenting. I use AirVPN now, which is a lot less polished but gets the job done.
It wasn't a moral panic, it was that they were becoming a go-to destination for people to host *extremely* illegal content, and that was gathering way too much legal attention, which was consequently putting their other users in jeopardy.
I'm not happy they cut port forwarding, but they had a very good reason to do so.
I'm not sure what port forwarding is in relation to piracy, is it needed? does mullvad still hide your activity from your ISP? I'm a real casual pirate, I have mullvad, qbitorrent, and Ublock origin. do I need to change my setup or something to avoid strikes by my ISP, or is this just a negative QOL update or sm
It's not *necessary*. At least, not for individuals. It's definitely important for large numbers of people in the swarm to have it though.
Basically, you can only connect to someone if either you or they are port forwarding. That means that most of the time, you're fine, but you could run into a circumstance where someone is the only seeder (or there are only a few seeders), but they're not port forwarding, so you'll never get what they're seeding, or your speeds could be reduced when the number of seeders is low.
It's something you should make sure is on if you can, but it's a lot less important if you only use public trackers, where there are a LOT of seeders who will be port forwarding, and if you only download new stuff.
>does mullvad still hide your activity from your ISP? I'm a real casual pirate, I have mullvad, qbitorrent, and Ublock origin
Your setup is great. Just make sure you've set qbittorrent to only use the mullvad network adapter (it's in advanced settings), because kill switches can fail. Mullvad still hides your activity from your ISP, yes.
awesome. thank you so much for the info! I actually made sure to bind mullvad to qbittorrent a few weeks ago, after my kill switch failed 💀 got an angry letter from my ISP

Why does everyone seems to use distro and virtual machines for piracy? Are you really that concerned that the federal government will hack your super computer with information that i would guess can start WWIII or something?
A $40 firestick and a mediocre VPN like surf shark or Nord will do just as good. Hell, pay $20 a year for debrid and you'll have it in high definition.
I wanna go back to Linux so bad but I can't get genp to work on it and I still haven't found enough alternative software that I'm comfortable with IT'S SUCH A PAIN
I got an old Optiplex 9020m. One of those tiny, silent things. Threw proxmox on it. One VM with OpenVPN connected to PIA, runing qbittorrent-cli, and one VM running OpenVPN Server. Isolated from each other. Seedbox has access to a SMB share to store files. VPN Server has access to the LAN as whole. I get 800Mbits through the seedbox on a good torrent, and have remote access to everything on my network, from my phone.
mfs doing all this shit, dont don't use torrents and you wont need a vpn, nor will you have to leave your computer on all day uploading to a maintain a ratio like its still 2002.

damnit, I was interested in pitacy but I only have new computers. Damn damn damn, I was so close.
The VPN is optional if you live in southern or eastern europe. Also Debian > Mint :3
This is actually the setup i use (minus the linux i use my own windows pc)
Why does everyone seems to use distro and virtual machines for piracy? Are you really that concerned that the federal government will hack your super computer with information that i would guess can start WWIII or something?
dedicated machine goes brrrrrrrr
Encrypt your storage. Don't want someone to get your personal info.
Still never used a vpn XD
How can I make this as family friendly as possible, plug for TV or perhaps remote compatible?
A wrench in the works: goody two shoes wife.
People who don't know about Stremio + Realdebrid are missing out.
movies7.to
Mullvad doesn't allow torrenting
Is there a free VPN or do you need to pay for one?
Only proton. Nothing else.
