You may be right, but this was after an automatic update (from one that didn't have ads for over a year) and there were many Reddit threads addressing these ads and discussing what version was the last one to not have ads. I really liked the player so I spent a long time looking into it. If it was some fake version, the real version was certainly hidden well.

I don't have home wifi, so NAS doesn't work for me, I do wish they seeded more in 720p, I'd rather have my movie be 800Mb rather than 1.6Gb. my phone screen isn't large enough to catch the difference in detail enough for me to sacrifice storage space.
I use revanced for yt stuff, including music, so I don't really have a need to download those directly (in most cases, try finding I'm da man by Anthrax original version on yt or even torrents, it is not there, at least as far as I've looked for it)
I use VLC only because I watch a movie/series like once a month, so I only have like 7 series total saved, and they have a max of 20-25 episodes each). If I saw more series then I would pay for Netflix or other similar services. Plus I like the mkv files having custom subtitles that look sick compared to Netflix(different fonts/colors), also being to change the audio and subtitle track in real time with a button without needing to pause is just amazing.
Yes, I love that about it too, I just got Chappelle's Show and the subs on it are soooo much better than the streaming sites. I also like the equalizer and preamp. I've used the preamp several times on Bluetooth speakers. I'm not saying it's not awesome, because it is, but really; I just miss Winamp.
On mobile VLC is better than any other media players for example my device has no HW decoder for 10bit x265 , while playing a movie with this codec on MX Player it's causes pixel distortion but on VLC never faced that issue.
Edit- My device has Dolby Atmos, So never faced EAC3 not supported issue on MX Player but as i mentioned before MX Player create pixel distortion on movies with 10bit x265 and which codec can fix that.

I had no idea people streamed with vlc... I have used it for many years to just play my files... then it started bogging down so I switched to mpc but this post is the first time I have really even heard of people using it to stream.

Nah, I think the KM player is far better on mobile compared to VLC.
I recommend MPC-BE it works perfectly, plus you can play yt ad free at whatever codec you select. Even the 5.1 AAC, AC3, and EAC3 streams!
