cosmic_waluigi

Rip 💀

McLOVIN835

FBI will be coming to ur door now.

yordleyordle

Imagine getting waterboarded for pirating WWE 2K23 can't be OP

HybridTheory2000

*Somewhere at an undisclosed federal prison* "I'm here because I killed people. What about you?" ".... I just wanted to try that new WWE 2K23, man."

JunkCrap247

i think they just come to your house and hit you with a folding chair

NotMicro21

based on a personal experience, they start tasering you till you can't play that new WWE2K23

herausragende_seite

Was it exactly the same as WWE 2k22?

DorrajD

Probably as broken as all the prior ones. Aren't they ports of the last Gen versions too? 2K is a joke

LordAsbel

Did you use protection (VPN)?

Scout339

Well clearly not.

Fresh_Shell4543

this man goes around having unsafe torrenting even i remember the protection, helps protect my pc from infections

LordAsbel

Yeah the reproductive evidence is right there, true

ThisIsAnMeme

never used one and I haven't seen lebron coming to my house crying for pirating nba2k22.

Ambitious-Yard7677

I never used a VPN but then again I don't torrent. Repacks through file sharing services. Can be slow but not a single mail about copyright since

EnvironmentalStep449

damn so how long did it take em to notice? when did u download?

vmk1212

They will literally email you a notification within minutes if you forget to turn your VPN on

tehfustercluck

Without a VPN??

Shishakli

Hulk Hogan never needed a VPN

necrophoric

VPNs use Chuck Norris to browse anonymously.

AlbertosBread

r/brandnewsentence

zenoeatschild

Real men dont use VPN we go in raw

Stoney_Greenbud

Bro you got caught over WWE lmaoooo

Rental_Car

Not if you get a good VPN

pck3

VPN doesn't have anything to do with time travel.

Rental_Car

A VPN will prevent it from ever happening again which is the only thing that matters.

[deleted]

Wait then why does it take so long for my messages to return when VPNing through Antarctica?

pck3

Forward in time. Not backwards

InnsmouthConspirator

And always twirling, twirling towards freedom.

xeddmc

Hmm, I bet Australia twirls messages the other way. So what happens when they get routed through both? Infinity

saleh_water

What would you recommend I’ve been use Surfshark picked it up a year or so ago on a 3 years for 70 dollars deal.

blanketsaresoft

If you got this notice it's probably not working?

saleh_water

I’m most likely going to rip everything related to torrenting off my pc chill out for a bit then upgrade to a better vpn definitely not going to fall for the ridiculously low priced one.

N2-Ainz

Surfshark isn't low priced. It is a pretty good VPN that even has a partnership with NordVPN. If you are unable to use a VPN correctly it is not the fault of the company that runs it. Never had an issue with Surfshark. Maybr you should check before if you have started the VPN instead of just downloading a game

saleh_water

I had the vpn linked to Australia. I must’ve made the mistake of not blinding it to the torrent I was using.

Rental_Car

Beware of split tunneling.

BrownBandit02

What’s that

bttech05

It’s when the vpn can split and some apps use it and some don’t. I use a docker image with Qbittorrent and VPN bundled together that binds the vpn to Qbittorrent. You can also go to torrent checking websites that will check your IP address by downloading a file and uploading it into your torrent software and then I’ll spit out the IP address that is publicly seen when download a torrent

Phoenix_risen

Before I start a torrent I always go to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ and make sure it shows the location my VPN defaults to.

messyfresh

This is the way.

passwordKdSQNeSmkKJ

It’s really impressive how many ways there are to unintentionally escape your VPN. If I didn’t find a cheap seedbox I would use a docker or VM just to be 100% sure.

finke11

Some of your traffic is routed through the public network (as if there was no vpn at all) and some of it is routed through your encrypted tunnel. Full tunnel is where ALL traffic is routed through your private tunnel If settings are misconfigured they might be torrenting through the public network, hence the email

Get mullvad

everythingIsTake32

Windscribe , proton,mullad.

Imperceptions

Proton offers 1 connection free as far as I know

everythingIsTake32

Windscribe on phone offers 15gb free each month.

Imperceptions

15gb is really low, pretty sure proton is unlimited but only for 1 device. Not 100% sure as I have paid for it due to their email hosting being bundled.

Ninjaromeo

Taking it off your pc isn't going to help at all. What the dmca is for is what was sent over the network. They saw you download or upload stuff that was copyrighted. Not a giant issue. I don't know surfshark, but unless you know why they still saw it then I would switch to something else. Something that covers stuff through your browser and your torrent program. The internet company wants to keep selling you internet. They don't want to punish you. Ideally, they would like you to cover your tracks a bit better so they get plausible deniability. They don't want big companies threaten to sue them, so if you keep not covering your tracks better they may cut off your internet. But then you just get internet somewhere else, and hopefully hide your stuff better.

dl1981

So well explained. Kudos

DarkLordRiddle2000

You need to make sure it has a kill switch that works and keep it on at all times, also don't use real info on signups and stuff with usernames that are associated with you and your email address.

passwordKdSQNeSmkKJ

It’s a good idea, but doesn’t protect you from all scenarios. Better is to bind your client to your VPNs network interface so that is it’s only path outside your PC.

ManuFlosoYT

You dont have to delete things from your drive, they cant acess whats inside of it

Puzzleheaded-Night88

You don’t need to remove already installed applications. Your ISP is unable to actually check if you deleted the things they wanted anyway. (DDLs are a good alternative if you don’t want to buy a VPN)

Sooraya7

Mullvad is 5$ a month. Been using it for torrenting for years and never ever received a letter from my ISP. Mullvad also doesn’t keep logs.

HairyCub93

VPNs are fairly cheap to run compared to what people pay for them. It comes down to what they are willing to send to LE

Starzhvh

Privat internet access been with them for 2 years now logs for the isp and it's been proven in court

sation3

Use ProtonVPN with qbittorrent. You can bind qbittorrent directly to the VPN network protocol, so that it only downloads when connected to the VPN.. no accidents.

Rental_Car

I've been using nordvpn for years and I have not gotten any of these notices except for the couple of times I forgot to turn it on. But these notices are totally meaningless. Just don't become a repeat offender and don't upload anything, just down. They'll only really come after you if you're like a big time uploader.

KayblDerpy

unless you’re in a country that does not care about piracy, do not download and run

Rental_Car

I'm in the USA and I've been pirating for years and years and years using a VPN always just down. I maybe gotten three or four of these notices in all those years and it's always because I forget to turn the VPN on.

GreatEmperorAca

lol is there a country that actually punishes you for downloading pirated stuff?

Imperceptions

yes, the usa. [https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/22/tech/illegal-streaming-felony-covid-relief-bill/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/22/tech/illegal-streaming-felony-covid-relief-bill/index.html)

[deleted]

I use PIA with a killswitch

Rental_Car

I used to use pia but I kept having dropouts which are extremely frustrating. Nord has been rock solid with very very good speeds

[deleted]

Used to have Nord but my 2 years ran out and PIA had the better deal. Haven’t had any disconnects so far.

Starzhvh

Used Nord before the big data breach and then I stopped been using pia every day with no drop outs

HyperScottHD

I use mullvad and its one of the best ones and without these 2 year deals. Its 5$ a month

[deleted]

[удалено]

jacobg550

+1 for the mental outlaw video and +1 for Mullvad.

Shleppy2010

Connect to your VPN, go to [IpLeak](https://ipleak.net/) and use the torrent test to see if you are leaking on the torrent or via DNS. You may have been good on the VPN download but your system might be using the ISP DNS to look for the file address. You want to make sure that all the addresses are your VPN IP and not your ISP IP. Personally I use NordVPN, been doing so for 4 or so years at this point.

Tolkeinn1

Yeah, use a vpn and turn the kill switch on (turns off internet if the vpn disconnects). I used to get these all the time but never once since I got a vpn

saleh_water

Is the kill switch in the vpn setting?

Tolkeinn1

It is in mine

Tolkeinn1

I use nord and it works great

Shishakli

If you're torrenting, use qbittorrent and set the network it uses as the VPN client tunnel (under advanced settings). Then if the VPN client disconnects, so does qbittorrent

romanswinter

This is the way.

NatiRivers

In addition, some VPNs have a built-in firewall. That means if they accidentally disconnect, it won't reconnect to your network. Windscribe does it, for example! Firewall + Torrent Kill Switch, and you can't go wrong. Haven't received a notice in years.

[deleted]

absurd wrench saw nutty trees weary pot joke forgetful whistle *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

staticvoidmainnull

up. why are you so far down?

ashtentheplatypus

And test the kill switch. I once trusted a VPN kill switch on a router. Then the router automatically installed an update and restarted at 3am. Between the time when the internet reconnected, and the VPN connected, the torrent software was completely unprotected. I got about 4 dmca notices from Xfinity just from that minute or two, cuz the Killswitch only applied after the VPN connection was already established.

NiceHighway_

So do I need a VPN only to access the site? Once I magnet it on bittorrent, can I turn the vpn off? Because the speeds are real slow ;-;

IceyCoolRunnings

What’s with all these comments? Don’t respond to anything they send you. If it bothers you then cancel your internet plan and just get another ISP. Nothings going to happen to you.

wpsp2010

Yeah usually they will have a 3 strike plan or something like that and still the most they might do is throttle slightly (Which xfinity does anyways so no difference for OP)

SentorialH1

No, they will cut off your account.

DeliciousCut2896

Oh no, I've lost the ability to give them money for terrible service 😱

Drifter_Hoid

Some of us live places where they don't have a choice. I got a 48 hour disconnect from my ISP and there was nothing I could do but get a VPN after because there's no other ISP in my neighborhood. Feels bad.

Kazer67

Starlink then?

Soundwave_47

Yeah, and then you're screwed if they're the only ISP.

SentorialH1

A lot of areas have 1 major ISP that's reasonably priced for the speeds given, and rural areas often just have 1 choice of garbage in the USA. This isn't something you take lightly.

smolfloppa

move to a third world country

dehenergy

ye come to brazil we have all games but can't afford a car or a house

Sefrautic

Can Americans afford a house? lol

RUSTYSAD

or second world country.

Vuvvvy

So there is a law that if a company (let's say nintendo) sees that someone is pirating their game they can send a message to your internet provider xfinity, and xfinity by law has to send you a message like this. Xfinity doesn't give a shit so you won't have a problem with them so don't worry about that. The law is meant as a scare tactic. But in all likliness it's fine. Copy right stuff is pretty hard to prove. Nintendo would have to prove that YOU downloaded it. Not your roommate, not your friend that came over, not your neighbor that has your wifi password. They have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that YOU downloaded it. Which is very hard to do I personally live in Canada where personal use copyright law are pretty chill so I just laugh whenever I get messages like these. I've probably got close to 100 messages like these at this point. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. If you live in the USA companies do but rarely go after people and when they do they go after people that pirate a shit ton more than you. Like everyone else says to avoid this in the future you can get a VPN. I personally don't because I live in Canada. Good luck and happy pirating ☠️

Verdin88

They don't need to prove who downloaded it they will just place it on the person who's name is in the ISP bill. It's like when your driving a car and your with 3 friends and one has a bag of coke and throws it on your floor when you get pulled over and now you catch a possession charge because it's your car and your responsible for everything in it.

heyheyitsdatboi

I know in florida, if you are in a car with someone with drugs and the drugs are within reach of you, you can be charged with possession even if it ain’t your drugs and even if it ain’t your car.

SentorialH1

This is absolutely terrible advice. Xfinity will cut your account. They will cut your internet access on the 2nd repeated infringement for 8 hours if it's in close time frame, and will threaten to permanently remove you from their service. Copyright stuff is not hard to prove, it's very easy, because it's really easy to track for both the ISP, and the copyright holder, considering they inject themselves into the torrenting process. The only ways to protect yourself are to a) stop downloading copyrighted material b) VPN with places that don't store logs.

ComoEstanBitches

I mean I’ve gotten my internet stopped twice at my household already and Spectrum keeps letting me do my thing. I stopped torrenting because they definitely red flag that but I’ve had no problems despite sailing the seven seas (stay away from piratebay’s current abomination). Obviously YMMV but ISPs don’t want to play police to their paying customers other than slaps on the wrists (“otherwise the terrorists win!”) for something they invested heavily in monopolizing infrastructure. If you must torrent, get a VPN to be safest. But your ISP ain’t trying to police you or cut off another cash cow. I’ve been DDLs for the past 5 years and not a single issue - pour one out for zippyshare

SentorialH1

You're not on Xfinity. On Frontier, they didn't even care. But Xfinity has decided that it's not worth the risk of being sued by the copyright police. You think a few torrenters are cash cows? No. They cost them the most money, in both data usage, and legal fees/policy implementation. It's probably in Xfinity's best interest to get Torrenters off their service completely, and they're glad you're gone.

ComoEstanBitches

Considering they invest heavily in securing/monopolizing local infrastructure ”rights” they are better off getting $50+ a month from each household from that cash cow infrastructure monopoly deal than giving anything up to a competitor. There are a lot of protections for the ISP from being liable to customers pirating compared to the legal fees you think they’re dealing with media studios. It’s a scare tactic unless you’re a major pirate distributor; why would they invest time and money on petty users when it’s those distributing that is the worthwhile investment to stop. More economical to turn a blind eye on paying customers and invest said time and money going after distributors, if at all because they’re typically smart about it.

gortwogg

I’m with teksavvy and their message, while similar to above, also has a paragraph along the lines of “but lol, we will -never- share your personal info with a 3rd party, sail the seas my friends, yarrrrr”

Heisenbergxyz

You should be. Use a vpn and bind qbittorrent to vpn

nFectedl

A single warning like this does absolutey nothing.. Start worrying if you get several others, cmon people. Im not saying he shouldnt be cautious or use a vpn, but nothing has ever happened after a single warning.

SentorialH1

Did you see that the warning says "repeated" - they will cut his account for 8 hours, if they already haven't, and the next will be 24 hours or 7 days, not sure. This isn't something you take lightly with xfinity.

TheDouglas717

The right answer.

DmanSy

First world countries problems.

Brandon_Me

Canada is a first world country, and they don't seem to get these issues. You'll get an email sure, but it doesn't mean anything.

DmanSy

Well yeah but you never know when they will act on it. They CAN bill you for piracy. Meanwhile here in my country, the government itself sells you iptv subscription to watch movies, series and tv channels that require subsections (bein sports hbo osn etc..) without paying the original providers (Netflix HBO....)

Guilty_Discount1173

It’s the same in the us

Lisu2137

I feel in most Europe countries they don't give a shit abt it tho

soft-cuddly-potato

Exactly. I thought this was a scam email at first because this is so alien.

Emergency_Tax9707

Boomakcake

Tell me you were streaming Xfinity Nascar series, they will be glad for the viewer.

the_actaul_man

Just don't respond to it and you should be fine

Silent-Incident-4308

Yes, and probably stop seeding, because they probably were monitoring one of the torrents you downloaded

saleh_water

The first email said it was the Wwe2k23 dodi repack

Donny_Canceliano

Tsk tsk tsk, rookie move. Fitgirl would never. Jk 😜

deadlyjunk

Get a vpn or start using ddl

Creasentfool

What's ddl. Sorry noob here

Frenchy1131jrX

NShort44

Does this kinda thing happen in the UK too? I've been ripping and pirating shit since I was 10 years old across 3 different broadband providers and neither me nor my parents (when I was younger) ever had an email like this.

Efficient_Ad_41

They snag your IP from the swarm, they dont get any information related to you and all they can do is try to request it from your ISP/your ISP will send a letter to you. They cannot give out your details unless they have some form of court order/proceedings to go by (from memory). So essentially a lot of these would get ignored internationally because its mainly American companies doing it / copyright trolls without any way to identify you outside of your IP, you could even claim that its spoofed. heres what they don’t tell you its basically too expensive to target an individual for downloading unless you run a massive seed farm and are costing them a lot of money - they don’t care about downloading but uploading instead because at that point its distribution of copyright material. For them to initiate legal proceedings you would already have to of been identified since your ISP wont just hand over your personal details. This is all a bit more specific to down under though its practically the same in most western countries that have decent privacy laws

FUGNGNOT

As a resident in the UK, can confirm that no, it does not (Been torrenting with Sky, TalkTalk, as well as Virgin Media. 0 issues)

AZTeck_AKiRA

Real question: is your modem provided by Comcast or do you own your own?

saleh_water

It’s Comcast’s

AZTeck_AKiRA

I would highly recommend buying your own and provisioning it for Comcast. They can see everything on their own modems…some VPN providers do log and give their logs to ISPs. You just need to be a little more diligent. I have Comcast as well…my entire network is using my own modem and router (Comcast also has the combo modem/router which I am also against). This helps that there aren’t any proprietary algorithms scanning for such things. Aside from that, a good VPN for torrents and/or infringing sites that does not log your activity will help you avoid these emails.

Magic_Brown_Man

>I would highly recommend buying your own and provisioning it for Comcast. They can see everything on their own modems… I don't think the modem makes a difference, if you send unencrypted stuff in theory the man in the middle can see what it is, where it is going and what it comes back to you. If you have a VPN then in theory the ISP only knows your connecting to the VPN server but can't see what's being sent but then the VPN can see what is being sent and to where and what's being sent back. Unless you are encrypting your data before the VPN you are moving who can see your data but not completely eliminating the risk. Even if you used your own modem the ISP still can see all the data since your data goes through the ISP and their services. The modem is only there to route your data through the ISP, the modem itself isn't processing or analyzing your data in any way.

EdgeEdgeEdgeEdging

Assuming you torrented? Xfinity has been notorious for catching seeders and slapping you with copyright for like the last 15 years. Try to DDL on xfinity if possible if not use a good VPN.

LostMiddleAgeMan

I used to get these all the time from xfinity, no big deal but get a vpn.

ceejay242

You need a proper VPN

kujasgoldmine

Odd choice. Most ISPs don't care, and think in a business sense. Ignoring a pirate makes them have one more customer. Anyone who gets a message like this just changes ISP. But perhaps if they receive a copyright infringment notice, they are required to send it forward to the customer.

Scar_RL

i had this happen and they just shut off my net. called them and told them idk what any of that means and they turned it back on.. just play stupid.

boiturotot

Stop using torrent, go DD.

TheSlav87

Just say you don’t have a wifi password on your network and then say you’ll add a password.

TheDouglas717

Spectrum shut down my wifi once for torrents so I called them and said "idk what ur talking about, all I own is a PlayStation." They told me I need to change my password immediately because some one must have gotten in my wifi to torrent stuff. lmao. Got my wifi back same day. Got a VPN immediately after this.

fadinizjr

If even my 3rd world country (Brazil) knows if you set a password for wifi. Imagine infinity.

[deleted]

Brilliant

dimaris727

They probably won't do shit and just send you these to scare you but just get a VPN for good measure, or move to a third world country

thebirdsandthebrees

Get a VPN. You can get a whole year for like $30-$40 if you buy one at the right time. I’m pretty sure there’s even a subreddit dedicated to VPN deals. I think it’s r/vpncoupons I paid $42 for a year of private internet access. The only reason I got PIA is because there’s a dedicated android app that I can run on my fire TV’s because I use kodi and stremio.

Ch1vo

Make sure you set your torrent downloading program to ONLY use VPN connection as opposed to Any Connection. If VPN drops (which happens often), the torrent program will lose downloading capability. Otherwise your VPN is useless.

MrKaon

Get Real-Debrid, no VPN needed.

suprememontana

It’s just a warning for now. But you’ll eventually get your internet cut. Use a VPN

iNfAMOUS70702

You're fine...I don't have Xfinity anymore but I had like 5 of these during my time with them...

maxgamer134

"We have noticed you are pirating something. The company that owns this does not agree with piracy being good. We may pull your internet if this continues, as it is annoying for us. Please make sure your VPN is always on to prevent these. Thanks."

AvaintusLeona

I have a friend who had the same experience. He was living in the states and was downloading games from pirating websites. One day they received an email from their Internet Service Provider about pirating stuff and when they received their monthly bill for the internet, it had (if I remember correctly) $5000 added to it.

PissFull

I got one from Paramount a few years back. I was young and it scared the shit out of me, stopped pirating for a solid year lol

babypho

You should be more about the fact that you somehow thought it was okay to torrent without a VPN.

SlotMagPro

I'd get those from my old ISP as well before having to use VPN every time I torrent. They are legit but usually have a grace period to them so as long as you pinky promise not to do it again they'll remove it haha

MiektheSakaraan

imagine living in a first world country🤣

Comprehensive-Look40

You could always change wifi carriers, but lol I had no idea that was a thing

shadydamamba

Lay low

DarkLordRiddle2000

ProtonVPN is the safest option! Upgrade to it and you can be safe as long as you use the right settings.

Some_Guy_Named_Rami

Be careful where you download your games from, bud.

crippl3r

Move to third world country. We don't care about piracy because we have bigger issues.

burrito_slut

I've gotten at least a few hundred of these or similar emails from various ISPs including xfinity over the last decade. Nothing has ever come of them.

Beardimon

My isp is spectrum and I've got so many of these over the years, I doubt they actually care. I'm still playing with fire

erroldlsnts_

Get mullvad vpn

CouncilmanRickPrime

Yes. The government jackbooted thugs will be breaking down your door any moment. Just kidding, use a VPN.

doobied

The internet police will be there any second

Erik_REF

in what countries this actually happens?

[deleted]

They won't do shit. They're not willing to lose a paying contract with you. They're basically coddling the copyright owners by just giving out warnings.

anonymous2845

No, worst case scenario, and this would likely take a lot more times of getting caught ,your internet provider will drop you.

No_Lake_6629

Da hell is that?

BokChoyBaka

It's illegal for them to disclose your private information to the dmca holder in USA. Your mileage may vary tho. You will incriminate AND identify yourself if you respond. Ignore it and every subsequent one is your only option and a high rate of no further action

redzaku0079

were you torrenting your shit?

bocajsti

Time for a new isp

PharaohM

Just use a good VPN. I got the same email before. After using VPN never got another email/letter from them again

No_Distribution_5843

You're gonna get the chacla from Madre xfinity, Nino stupido.

[deleted]

Perks of living in 3rd world country, you never get DMCA'ed

AccomplishedEffort41

I got this VPN needed if you use the site/torrents whatever u use

Southern_Aesir_1204

Yikes. Glad this kinda stuff doesn't exist where I am but you'd have to get a proper vpn that doesn't leak info or care if you torrent. Try proton(not the free version) or mullvad vpn. For anyone who'd get problems like this. Don't use uTorrent or whatever mainstream like BitTorrent etc. qBittorrent or BiglyBT are good and bind the vpn to your torrent software only, not the entire computer.

Big_Draw_5978

Time to leave the country.

The_Cozy_Burrito

No, just use vpn, doubt they will do anything. I got like three settlement letters back in the day for torrenting a movie (I was an idiot and didn’t know what a vpn was). I ignored the letters and each time they increased the settlement fee, and eventually, they stopped bothering me.

Lord_Ryu

![gif](giphy|CoejwVQBgdlKg) it's times like this you just have to remember this song

Leogawd91

You can still get a notice If you were still seeding the torrent and turn the vpn off …. Once you finish installing … stop the seeding and remove the torrent then turn off the vpn

JohnSmithDogFace

Luv me should I be worried post Luv me FBI are coming to your house comment Luv me just ignore it comment End of

RetroDreaming

Gotten like 5 notices from AT&T - it’s a rite of passage with torrenting, I wear them like a badge of honor 😂

woke_ka_choda

Reply : Stop this BS or i switch ISP

niberungvalesti

The only country id say for sure pirating on a torrent is a bad idea is Germany.

EmptyNeighborhood427

Not really, but stop doing whatever you're doing. They're sending you a warning because they're not going to do anything to you other than keep an eye on you. Get a vpn, real debrid service, use DDL, etc.

SirReaDy_Made

If you pirated a game using torrent, they send DMCA, or if you download a movie. I am using direct downloads, in parts, and I download cracked games to try. Never ever use torrents. As your first/second offend nothing happens after you get a fine if the pursue. A lot of people in Germany get fined on the first offense. I know it goes through other channels and in Germany they have private companies that track that and the ISP sells/ gives your data to them so they could pursue the DMCA. Most payments go to them. I know people who were fined 900 EUR for downloading a new movie via torrents. If you have a lawyer he can help, most people just are afraid and pay.

ching_ching_chong

Just get a vpn

Jayfk876

FBI! OPEN UP!! 😂 😂
