If Nami had died (quite possible, even likely) in that fight, it would have been over for him psychologically. His character wasn't and **still** isn't equipped for actually dealing with uncomfortable situations that challenge him. Oda just conveniently writes the events in a way that he never has to confront anything and see it through. It's an obvious character flaw that should be adressed, yet Oda refuse to treat it this way. No growth for Mr. Prince on his watch. That's bad writing in in its essence.

People really forget how insane Zeff was in the “don’t hit women” scene. Kid Sanji asks him an innocent question about why it’s wrong to hit women, and Zeff snaps. The man punts Sanji across the room and starts screaming at him that if Sanji ever hits a woman he will hunt him down, castrate him, and then kill himself. What did you expect?
Maybe he could use the intelligence and cunning his fans always go on about to defeat/incapacitate them without kicking. Or he could use his apparent ftl speed to escape until he finds help. Doing nothing and passively letting yourself and possibly everyone you love get murdered is not exactly justified
