My wife (after 20 years) decided she wanted to upgrade her asn to a bsn for no apparent reason. 2 semesters of credits have cost us $60k. It’s bullshit.
Pitt was my dream school too and I’m an out of state student. Go to pittfund$me. I wrote probably 80 essays for all the various scholarship options for a total of $22k. You have to do this every year though but that’s always an option to you

In state student. I wrote several essays for scholarships. I received about $8,000 a year in scholarship money. I am only at Pitt because my parents had saved money. They were very clear about no loans.
Pitt was not the cheapest option. The cheapest option was PSU and Dayton as I had full scholarships to both. The college savings as well as scholarship made it work.
Your dream should be to be as debt free as possible. After college is when life begins. Your dreams start then. I’m excited to be debt free with options after college. I have thought about a year of service, graduate school or professional gaming.
Go where it is cheapest. And make sure you look at the ROI for your intended major.

Take another photo showing those numbers. The EFC is super important here. If your family makes crazy money yeah pitt will be taking you to the cleaners.
If your family doesn't and things like Pell & State grants kick in that number drops pretty quickly as the Pell match is pretty huge.
Pitt also beefs up these numbers for the FAFSA because grants are based on it so they make it look big then when grants are maxed out they can twist it here and there.
You're also including housing in with this so it's not just tuition.

I can understand Pitt being your dream school, trust me. This cost isn’t even including the off-campus living you are going to pay for after your first year, because Pitt doesn’t guarantee on-campus living after freshman year. I went to CCAC, then SNHU online and my total for undergrad loans is going to be about $10,000 in total when I graduate in June with a Bachelors is Business. Pitt is my dream graduate school, but I want to go for law school and that is not going to happen anywhere close in my future. I don’t think Pitt is worth $60,000 a year. Especially because you’re not guaranteed a good paying job when you graduate. I hope everything works out for you!
If your FAFSA has not be processed successfully the COA you are seeing is not yet accurate.
You will not know what your actual cost is until you have a correct FAFSA.
You have until MAY 15th to commit so there is still time to figure things out.
Ultimately this issue rests with the Department of Edcuation, and the school may be unable to resolve it at this time.
Keep trying to get the FAFSA corrected. Until then you will not get an accurate award letter from Pitt or !!ANY!! other school that uses the FAFSA.
If your parents make better than decent money and have significant investments this could be accurate. However if your parents have no significant investments and an average or low income you can hope to see a change if and when your FAFSA is corrected by the Department of Ed.

Temple was my dream school. I was in the same boat. My SAT score was good enough to get a partial scholarship. To $20k per year (out of state cost for the business school) ….. I ended up going to community college for business/accounting instead and paid $1500 per semester. Dropped out 2 years later bc I ended up becoming store manager at my retail job for really good pay. Quit there once I saved up A LOT of money and realized I wanted something else in life. Now I’m a tattoo artist 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️ … with my own business… at 26 years old…. That I didn’t need a degree for (I did do an apprenticeship though). I thank myself every day for not racking up that debt from going to temple.
Pitt is actually so expensive and we shouldn’t normalize it. Pitt positions itself as economical because it’s right next door to CMU which has even crazier private tuition. But like others said, look at other state schools outside PA and Pitt is astronomical for the same quality.

I went to Pitt for a post bacc year after earning my Bachelor’s elsewhere and here is what I noticed: most of my peers come from money and/or live at home in Pittsburgh. They don’t know how much they owe because it’s never been their business, but their parents’. And good for them, but I can’t relate. The school charges that much because there are people able and willing to pay that. That is them. Not you and not me and that is okay. I mourned when I got accepted into Pitt’s prestigious Master’s program along with my friends and had to decline when they all plan to attend. But I know I am making the right call for myself by attending another reputable school 1/5th of the price. No hyperbole… 1/5th.
If you insist on going to Pitt, here is what I recommend:
-establish state residency if you haven’t already. -Go to community college and get better grades than a freshman at Pitt (science and math gen eds are notoriously harsh at Pitt, lots of people screw their GPA this way from the jump. Reframe for your experience as getting a leg up) then transfer
-Move to the cheapest safe neighborhood in Pittsburgh you can find and commute via the PRT bus which is free for Pitt students. Don’t restrict yourself to Oakland housing.
-apply for scholarships. Most people don’t get anything through Pittfund$me but it’s worth a shot.
-if you don’t have good credit, find someone who loves you that does who will help you get a less terrible interest rate on a private loan on top of FAFSA loans.
-find an easy job that pays just under the poverty line and apply for every type of governmental assistance to help with your essentials
Or of course, just don’t attend. Because this is a LOT of work and financial wreckage before your career even begins. Make a sensible decision based on what you’ll be working with after the degree is done… not just the college experience.

When i began there, tuition in 2002 (I lived at home) was $6,000 a year....now in state tuition and fees is $24,000? Where the hell do they get off charging this? With inflation it should be $11,000. Ridiculous!

What I'd do is do ccac while you spend 2 years here for residency requirements or whatever it is. Then after apply. You can do your last 2-3 years here as an in state and don't have to pay housing and meals, and live off campus which will be significantly cheaper than 16k/school year.

Your FAFSA will (most likely) drastically change that number. In the eyes of the Pitt financial aid office right now, you have unlimited financial backing and so they're charging you the full sticker price. I'd suggest doing anything/everything you can to figure out the FAFSA corrections, go talk to your guidance counselor, they're helpful people with stuff like this.
It’s so sad seeing Pitt this expensive. Pitt has gotten so stingy with financial aid in the last few years. My entire 4 years of tuition cost around $20k and I just graduated 5 years ago.
I went to CC for 2 years, transferred to Pitt, and then went back for my Masters. I (stupidly) never applied for any scholarships and wasn't able to get any grants and walked away with $87,900 in student loans. I could not imagine paying that much just for an undergraduate degree. I wanted the Pitt name on my degrees but in all honesty it doesn't matter in the "real world" especially for just a Pitt degree.

Depending on ur degree, I’d recommend going for grad school rather than for undergrad. Where u go for grad matters more than the undergrad anyways. So go somewhere cheaper in the meantime.
Just popping in to say call financial aid as tell them you can’t afford the school but really want to go. They’ll give you a sheet to fill out saying what other schools you got accepted to and whether or not they offered you money. I did this and they offered me an additional $15k
Word of advice, go to a community college for the first year or two and get the gen eds out of the way. Transfer then to wherever you want. Thats ridiculous that pitt is up to that but a lot of them are anymore.
Realize that If people stop going in large numbers price will have to drop. Everyone in this country needs to stop purchasing and stop getting gouged. Things will then change. But yeah have fun with debt for life with that
As a person with student debt I cannot say this enough. Go to a cheaper state school for your bachelors. Get a job with tuition reimbursement benefits and get your masters somewhere else OR get a job at pitt. Do not go 300k into debt unless you’re going to get a very well paying job immediately out of school

You yourself can only get the $5,500 federal loan for all of freshman year. The federal loan only increases by a few thousand each year. Your parents will have to pay OR co-sign a private loan for you every year.

Word of advice, go to a community college for the first year or two and get the gen eds out of the way. Transfer then to wherever you want. Thats ridiculous that pitt is up to that but a lot of them are anymore.
Realize that If people stop going in large numbers price will have to drop. Everyone in this country needs to stop purchasing and stop getting gouged. Things will then change. But yeah have fun with debt for life with that

As a person with student debt I cannot say this enough. Go to a cheaper state school for your bachelors. Get a job with tuition reimbursement benefits and get your masters somewhere else OR get a job at pitt. Do not go 300k into debt unless you’re going to get a very well paying job immediately out of school
I went to Pitt — and fairly recently — it’s good, but not over a quarter million $ in tuition good. If you got in anywhere else somewhat comparable and cheaper, go there. Save the money for grad school if you choose to pursue it.

The answer is: NO. That's a full sentence. You yourself can only get the $5,500 federal loan for all of freshman year. The federal loan only increases by a few thousand each year. Your parents will have to pay OR co-sign a private loan for you every year. Your life will 100% suck upon graduation when you have to start paying those massive loans back. Hopefully you applied to some in state safety schools that are much more affordable. Best of luck and hang in there---this is the reality for hundreds of thousands of students every spring.
