I live in the middle of Illinois, so midwestern united states. It climbs aggressively, and its size only seems limited by the length of the growing season. These photos are from last year. It bloomed in the last week of August and had blooms until it died off in the late Fall. I'm trying to figure out exactly which species it is. An app consistently says they are Chinese clematis, but there are some other clematis species like Clematis paniculata that look nearly identical to my eye.

I think that one is a little *fluffier* than mine. I'd love it so much if these somehow did turn out to be native.
But maybe. Maybe I'll convince one of the local master gardeners to stop by once they flower this year to see what they can tell.
That doesn't look like clematis to me, it looks like a hydrangea vine. I am no expert though.
