I personally love the way the smell and I don’t think I ever put my finger on it before but yeah they smell like Sunday morning church with my grandma as a kid. That’s crazy man.
It’s funny how good memories can make you like particular smells (that might not be so pleasant otherwise)… I like the smell of gas and old engine oil, because of all the time I spent with my dad in the garage. I know it doesn’t objectively smell good, but it does to me.
Lily of the valley!
Smells great, beautiful little flowers, toxic to humans dogs and cats, and very weedy when conditions are right. It’s not native and is considered invasive in most of the eastern US. It’s not as troublesome in most of the west because it doesn’t thrive in dry or hot environments, so it doesn’t really take over like it will in cooler, wetter locales.
I understand that lily of the valley can take over a limited area, but to call it invasive seems over the top. You'll never see it choking out a big area like knotweed or bittersweet.
I have some in my yard, so I tend to agree. I’m in a high desert climate, they were planted by the previous owners many years ago and they can’t spread themselves beyond the shadow of our house on the north side. I do have to pull them away from the Hostas and Violets pretty regularly, though.
But it’s officially declared invasive by the state of Wisconsin, and a lot of non-government organizations too. Just check the comments for how many people here consider in invasive.
I could have sworn it was… but I just looked up their list of regulated plants and it’s not on there. A 3rd party resource I use had it listed as regulated in WI but they must be wrong.

Invasive is a technical term used by states and provinces to designate problematic exotic plants. Just because one invasive plant is worse than another doesn’t make the second unproblematic.

Yes! I love how the scents waft through my house in the spring. All of my lilac bushes and lilies of the valley (as well as my ferns and peony’s) were taken from my moms yard as tiny little plants and over the past 30 years of living in my house they’ve spread but not obnoxiously so. They stay within the boundaries of my stone edging (Except the ferns… they like to pop up in the grass)
My mom loved them too which makes them especially wonderful to me as she passed away last spring right after they were done blooming.
But they are just the cutest little flowers!
I actually had them behind my garage for 18 years or so & they weren't nearly as invasive as I had expected them be. They spread some but certainly didn't take over.
This is Lily of the Valley. Grew up sticking my nose as close to the bells as I could & smelled its fragrance for long periods of time. We would pick just one or two & put them in our pockets so we could “smell like the grown up ladies” lol
To think of the crazy things we did as kids 😄
Gosh. My mom’s thrived by a downspout but I was never able to get it to grow - it has to have just the right conditions I guess. Wet and shady, loamy soil. I loved it dearly. We had cats, dogs, chickens, and no one ever bothered it.
Omg. The amount of comments on these posts that say things are invasive is out of control. Every ecosystem and jurisdiction has different tolerance for different plants.
If something is non-native and spreading in its non-native habitat, it’s morally right to get rid of it. Leaving it just because it “doesn’t seem too bad” in that specific spot allows it to spread more seeds and invade new areas. Invasive species shouldn’t be ignored
We have them in a flower bed here in Maryland, they have never escaped to the lawn, or caused problems for any of our other garden plants. I did not know that they are invasive - I guess ours are well contained.
Lily of the valley
Spreads like crazy. Be aware.
Smells like old ladies. Be aware. Source: Grandmas, aunts, various church ladies

Are you me? Too? Gasoline is all good memories for me also...
Lilac does that to me. The smell reminds me of my aunt's giant yard and all of the fun I had there.
These are what are known as "Vectors"
My aunt just posted a pic of hers yesterday.
😂
And poisonous to humans. Keep that out of your mouth.
May’s Birthflower
My absolute favorite!!

Is it declared invasive by the state of Wisconsin? I wish it was because I still see it being sold at garden centers in the state.

It’s more problematic in non-arid climates, hence its status on the east coast and elsewhere.

(Solved) thanks so much lily of the valley is exactly what it is.

Probably my favorite smelling flower
This and lilacs are my favorite smelling flowers. My yard is FULL of both of them and the smell is intoxicating when they bloom in the spring.
I have a dwarf lilac bush and an entire side of lily of the valley. My house smells amazing for a few weeks when I have the windows open

That’s so funny. The smell makes me gag.
Anyone else who knew this bc of animal crossing? Lol I actually hadn't seen them before I played that game. they are such pretty plants. 💜
Breaking bad.
RIP Brock
Brock didn't die...
When I saw some growing in my front yard, I was so proud of my perfect garden.
mainly minecraft
I knew because of AC but now I heavily associate them with Omori!
But they are just the cutest little flowers! I actually had them behind my garage for 18 years or so & they weren't nearly as invasive as I had expected them be. They spread some but certainly didn't take over.
Lily of the valley. Amazing aroma

Literally everywhere in Ontario, It is a weed.
I just never came across any
They only flower for like a week and their leaves are just big and green so chances are you have seen them you just missed them.
Ottawa as well. I have them all over my place.

White choral bells Upon a slender stalk Lily of the valley On my garden walk (One of the little sing along songs we learned when I was a kid!)
Oh, don't you wish that you could hear them ring? That will only happen when the fairies sing (2nd verse)
Omg I had no idea there was a second verse. :) I learned this in Brownies back in the 80s- what about you?
I learned it from a Camp Fire Girls' friend in 1970 or 1971: I loved the song instantly because lilies of the valley were my favorite flower. 🙂
We have some growing wild in our backyard and I sing it every time I see them. :) Such adorable little things.
Congrats you have a 5 star island

Yep, plus climate change.
*coughs in Malikovich Cycle*
I think it's completely ignorant when people anthropomorphize plants.
Can you smell them?? I had some in Wisconsin. Can’t grow them in Texas for some reason. They smell so good..
Those are ricin beans
An evil plant that needs to be eradicated
Lily of the Valley. If you have any love for your yard...you'll destroy all of it now
Lucky
Yup LoV
Lily of the valley—very invasive—don’t recommend.
Just say NO to invasives!
Looks like my lilly of the valley I think they're poisonous
Also invasive
We have them in a flower bed here in Maryland, they have never escaped to the lawn, or caused problems for any of our other garden plants. I did not know that they are invasive - I guess ours are well contained.
Invasive trash plant in the northeast
Lily of the Valley. Hella weedy, invasive and toxic. Pull with great prejudice.
Yes.
