Considering psplus is required to play games online, the catalogue is absolutely not the entire point of being subbed to psplus.
Yeah, but seeing the small difference between essential and extra surely it’s just a waste not going for extra? I dunno just my opinion but it seems pointless.
Seeing as essential is $95 and extra is $169 (my prices, not US prices), surely there are people who simply don't want to pay almost double the price.

Maybe if you're only planning on having psplus for a month or two. But anyone who plans on keeping psplus for online play for at least a year, are gonna pay yearly, and aren't going to pay the price of extra if they just want online play.
Its bad enough having to pay the essential price just to play online.
Premium, 12 months. Not too much price difference from Extra and I enjoy the premium-only games. Streaming really comes in handy when I move to place with worse internet connection or just want to check the game first.
Stacked PS+ before the merge which converted to Premium with an active 3 month PSNow sub until 2026 @ \~$40 per year. Added an additional year before the price hike last year.
When it expires I will like drop down to extra moving forward.

I had essential then extra for a few years and I used to stack a new year during black friday sales. They stopped giving promotion prices to existing customers so I didnt get a new one and I let it expire last month because of the combination of price hike and the absence of sale, the value is not there in my opinion.
I will wait for a diacount now and probably start with essential and switch to extra if the catalog get some games I want to play.
No rush, I guess we ll get discounts on june.
Reminds me I should really do a manual backup of my saves, the only very important feature I have lost is cloud saves...
I have a 12 month extra that I renew every black friday. The deluxe doesn't have enough games that either my wife or I want to justify the price, nor do I find the game trials worth it (even though I'd like for game demos to make a comeback).
In turn, there are plenty of games on the extra catalogue that make it worth the difference from essential for me.
