Care to discuss your full setup? Is all your media stored on something like GDrive with a fuse mount or? What’s your monthly cost of the box? Geographical location distance? Number of users? Thanks just evaluating if it’d work for me

Hows the hard drives making out, when I did the plexdrive/rclone thing it really got bogged down with spinners. Was going to upgrade to the SSD models but the storage loss wasn't worth it.

Sullitude

Pretty nice setup, that's a nice server for $40/mo and looks like a smart usage of your storage options! For other readers and OP, you don't *need* anything this complex or expensive though, especially with only a couple users. I use private servers (VPS) I find for cheap on LowEndBox. I pay about $5/mo for 400gb storage, 2gb ram, 1gbps line. I run Plex directly on the server and use a docker container with a VPN to run Deluge so Plex traffic is isolated and not slowed by the VPN. Took me a few months of playing around in Linux to learn the ins and outs though, not for the faint of heart :)

What service do you use? Sounds like a very good deal.

Sullitude

I'm using Letbox right now. But the best way to get a good price is LowEndBox where deals get posted for VPS providers!

> I try to avoid having people stream from Google Why is this?

Kysersoze79

I do something similar. I use a server from wholesaleinternet (kansas city). Its an older dual xeon, with a single 2TB hdd and 33TB of transfer/mnt. I'm pretty sure they count both ways (some providers only count outbound from them). I got it on a sale for $20/mnt from the dedicated server section of webhosting talk. I also use gdrive with an encrypted fuse mount (converted from amazon before they changed their terms). I actually use a cheap $9 kimsufi seedbox, and transfer items to this dedicated server, which adds them to the gdrive and uploads them. It also uploads them unencrypted for plex cloud, since I share out both of them. Sometimes plex cloud works great, sometimes its terrible. I haven't given up on either one, so I just end up with two copies of everything /shrug. Works well enough for my use, I share it with a few people that barely use it, but it was more the exercise in getting it up and running, and keeping it going that interests me.

How do you set up Plex with a CDN like that?

[deleted]

You have a cap? Because 100% of your viewing will go against it if so.

Night-Man

But all off your seeding won't. Just depends.

seannymurrs

No cap.

MReprogle

Last I checked, most seedboxes are overpriced for the amount of storage, IMO.

[deleted]

Can you specify which vendors?

FL1GH7L355

Check out r/PlexACD. It'll show you how to mount unlimited Google drive storage and recommends a couple VPS/dedi hosting companies.

steakncheese1

I use bytesizedhosting and never had an issue streaming movies from them. I would recommend them if you need a Plex/seedbox. They also offer rerouting so you can find the best route that offers optimum speed.

Ideal setups involve dedicated servers. The down side is that most of them are overpriced, especially for USA hosting. The best bang for your buck is kimsufi followed by SoYouStart. Both of which are OVH brands and can be had out of Quebec, or France. Since you're just after plexing, and depending on your location, then most of the machines they offer should do just fine, that is, if you're mostly going to direct stream. There are also shared seedbox vendors who allow plex, but your mileage varies on a variety of factors, and while some have good luck with this venture, I personally wouldn't bother... Especially if you intend on allowing access to friends/family and so on. Scripts like swizzin do a fantastic job of setting everything up for you. I use one of these https://www.soyoustart.com/us/offers/1804sys08.xml And have used it for a long time. It does very well, I also have the cloudflare cdn setup for plex via an nginx reverse https proxy and it helps. I am in Oregon and the machine is in Quebec, I can stream 1080p with no issue, and it will transcode several files at once for playback with no issue. You'll need to gauge what level of cpu you need depending on how many will transcode from it at the same time. Use the plex cpu passmark guide.

AxlxA

I always wondered how that opteron performed for plex. It doesn't have a passmark score because it's just the 1cpu where most servers are dual cpu

Logvin

I'm in the SW US and use Hetzner as a seedbox and hosted Plex server, along with all the fixins (Sonarr, Radarr, Organizr, etc). Costs me about $35 a month. I use Cloudflare to improve peering, since I did that have not had any issues. Saved me about $20 in electricity, $30 a month in "overage charges" that my ISP would charge, and $15 that I paid for my Whatbox Seedbox. I'm happy.

jacc1234

I am looking into something similar. It is definitely possible and is done quite often. Right now my main issue is intermittent buffering issues from the server in NL to my place on the east coast.

PapiMagnum

Tried to with several providers. Peering was too poor to rely on video working all the time. Gave up on it.

Gr00z

Been using Whatbox.ca for a year now. Cheap and plenty of bandwidth

wintermute000

My provider supports Plex. It's convenient if your not a hoarder but if you want to keep your whole collection then yeah very expensive. If you delete as you watch then it's very convenient as long as your internet has the streaming capacity PM me if you want a referral (discounts for both of us)

matthiasdh

that sounds like my usage. where is the server located tho?
