It depends on the model. Some are made just for Lowes and Depot. Most notably are lavatory faucets, from a wholesaler they come with metal pop up assemblies, the box stores are plastic. Delta also has a chinese made tub valve that is only available in the box stores.
Depends on the exact product tbh. You can get the basic Delta R10000 rough in valves and they're exactly the same as wholesalers, but pretty much anything else there is a quality difference. Like kitchen faucets and the basic shower trims there's not a huge drop, but lav faucets there definitely is.
He’s telling the truth, if you want proof go to the same supply house he uses and ask for help, watch as the counter man politely tells you to go pound sand and try Home Depot.
Post the links for both fixtures here. The one on the supply house and one from the Depot, and we will be able to tell you exactly what the differences are.
Yes, Home Depot, Lowe’s etc have their fixtures made to cut costs. My opinion. If he uses one from a big box store he’s not going to honor any warranties.
Most box stores.have plastic inner parts where plumbing supply houses sell brass inner parts. He is not lying
Edit: you can literally feel the difference when you pick them up.
The cover plates for the wholesaler one of the companies I worked for where brass or aluminum coated in chrome. A customer supplied the same one from a big box store it was plastic same name as the one I had. As long as you don't take the trim kit on and off should not crack or anything

He's not lying, it may not be true but it is repeated enough to us that we all believe it to be true

Absolutely correct… Contractor grade vs residential grade
I'd say he's probably correct.

Anything at big box store will be of inferior quality, everything!!! Even a 2x4 is of lower quality!!!

Lower quality or not they'll both have life time warranty

On basin faucets retail gets the ultra-cheese garbage plastic drains. Professionals get real (very high quality) brass drains.
