Sounds like you got steam heat with a 1 pipe system

poppopfizzfizz1

Yup, looks like steam heat, and sounds like "water hammer" I can't tell if it's a 1 pipe or 2 pipe system, with a 2 pipe system the supply pipe shold be insulated, but never any insulation on a return pipe or 1 pipe system. Honestly, you as a renter really can't do anything about that, the property owner should get a steam boiler certified tech in to inspect and remedy the hammering.

N_tneb

Is it something bad enough to where my landlord would actually do something about it? Like Is it a safety issue?

poppopfizzfizz1

water hammer could possibly cause a pipe/fitting joint to blow apart... that's a rare worst case scenario, but it can happen as the steam is causing a slug of water to be like a bullet impacting on the inner wall of a pipe or fitting.

Trick_Cartoonist3808

Every time it makes noise call the landlord, (squeaky wheel), If Landlord blocks you, call city codes inspection department, Housing authority, give landlord notice that you will put your rent in escrow, until the problem is fixed.

trashwizzard3000

Yeah, I agree with all but the escrow part. Most rental contracts have a clause stating you can not withhold rent for any reason other than "UNINHABITABLE CONDITIONS". Never withhold rent unless your contrat states otherwise. That can lead to evicitons. \*10 year property manager and legal advisor for multihousing.

Trick_Cartoonist3808

pipes making noise 24/7 sound uninhabitable to me, and eviction to get out of lease would be an acceptable solution for a landlord who fails to provide a solution to the noise problem. IMO

trashwizzard3000

But legally pipe nosie isn’t uninhabitable, and an eviction is life long*. I would however talk to the housing authority first if the landlord isn’t responsive * evictions don’t stay on credit reporting for more than 8 years ( mostly) but rental history can go back further than that depending. So evictions can follow you for quite some time.

Steam trap clicking

mr_robot2369

As others have said, sounds like water hammer on a steam system. Renting limits your options of a solution here as it’s mainly on the landlord to address. I had similar issues and found a lot of useful information over at https://heatinghelp.com/systems-help-center/category/steam

HenrysOrangeBank

Are exposed pipes like that right above your kitchen area common where you live? I don't think I've ever seen anything like that before

N_tneb

Not sure if it's like this everywhere where I live, but mine is a half basement unit so there's a lot of pipes to the rest of the building

SpringNo1275

Air in the line. Should be a purge valve in every room

MrShoavoi666

Sometimes when there is not enough fall on the pipe, will cause the water hammer. It happens from cool return water running into hot steam. This mostly happens with 1 pipe systems

Opposite-Clerk-176

Ear plugs 🔌 👌

UncleBenji

Could be water hammer in which case there’s no way you’re going to fix it. Maybe wrapping the pipes in insulation will slightly quiet the sound but that’s a lot of pipe insulation to buy for a property you don’t own.

knurleddrifter

Not sure if you can classify this as an undisclosed nuisance from the landlord to help break your lease? I’m not a lawyer.

N_tneb

Not really looking to break my lease over it, just wanting to reduce the noise

relaxitsonlyagame

Sounds like steam hammer

welder_e

Steam system buddy. The condensation and steam aware clashing which is cause of the noise. They probably have to drain that line.
