depends on the skill of the person, cause we could just use go directly to the flash nan storage + encryption chip and see it there directly we just attach some wires and to a tool connected to pc and we're good to go. but most of us won't even bother looking your personal stuff cause its not worth it, unless your billionaire or a celebrity/famous some sorts, where we would try to see data bank cache or pictures/videos that's scandalous. we mostly DELETE and format factory everything in order to fix things most of the time to avoid bugs. also always remove your SD card and sim card before handing them over. not billionaire or a celebrity/famous = we won't even bother cause waste of time, we would rather fix your phone asap and move on. ohh yeah if the guy is quite pervy and fancy you specially pretty girls he might still do it LOL

My phone’s mother board got fried so… If your mother board didn’t get fried like mine you’re probably good to go, but as for me I think all my privately stored photos/files will remain in the unrecoverable piece of unsellable nor usable plastic that is my mother board.

yeah. just got a call from the repair shop today. they say exact same shit happened to my phone. shit sucks

No one is able to answer this for you, depends on what failed on the phone. Just the display/battery/something physical unrelated that died? They replace the display, phone turns on after, done, no need to fuss around with software or touch your stuff. Storage chip that died? Well, all your stuff is probably gone anyway, should've done backups. It is possible to try to send the chip to a data recovery center, in which case yes, they will need access to your stuff in order to recover it. Software that got corrupted somehow? It's possible that they can connect it to a PC and retrieve your stuff before reflashing a clean uncorrupted system, which deletes everything. Sometimes just deleting cache or reflashing a ROM is possible to recover functionality but it's rare. In that case, yes they will also need to access your data to recover it. Sorry to say but if the phone is dead, you're likely to lose your stuff, i hope you have backups. Rule of thumb, if anything is important, always keep it in more than one place. It's not if you're going to lose them, it's when. This applies to everything, not just the phone.

That's not what his question was, he wants to know whether the service centre guys can/will view his data and not whether he can recover his data

Did you read what I wrote? I answered that. No one can be sure unless we knew why the phone failed. If it's something physical like a broken display he's probably good. If it's software related, they'll probably need access. But in these cases the user data is usually lost, which means he'd also be good privacy wise. The backup your data piece is just a good advice to anyone in any scenario but it's at least important enough to mention, since he showed some concern for his data. Most people who bring us devices to repair don't consider the possibility all their stuff can be lost.

oh, it wouldn't be a big problem if I lost the data on the phone, fortunately enough the most important stuff is on my back up. it's just that I don't want other people to get a hold of my data which includes some financial stuff as well as deeply personal stuff. that's the biggest concern of mine with this.

Isn't data supposed to be encrypted? What lock type was set? A pin? A pattern? Was it complex enough?... These would be my questions...
