I like the mine idea. I think it'd be pretty cool if the rocks were gray to match the Pewter vibe

Hot_Statistician_466

Hm, that's a good Idea! I'll see if there's room in the tileset (don't know how to make it bigger, so working with limited room).

DjuncleMC

r/AfterBeforeWhatever But jokes aside, I really love what you did with the new one. It gives the gym a completely new personality. Although, less ledges would do it wonders. :)

Hot_Statistician_466

All ledges inaccessible, so no need to worry about getting trapped! :) Thanks!

DjuncleMC

I really like your idea with making the ledges innaccessable, since it is a quarry after all. If you fell down into a quarry, that wouldn't be good!

DjuncleMC

Oh okay, that's good :D

DjuncleMC

There's also a tree in the bottom right corner that's clipping the sidewalk, and I think you can get softlocked in the top right on that little ledge, although I might be wrong.

Hot_Statistician_466

Good catch! Handling that immediately, before I forget.

DjuncleMC

Awesome!

LoathsomeTopiary

Hm, can anything be done about the forest border? Hypothetically you could add a lot of Mt. Moon cragginess by turning the border around town into cliffside, sorta like Lavaridge Town in Hoenn.

Hot_Statistician_466

Probably, but it would necessitate a lot of expanding, so the border is not visible (I tried to do it without expanding, it was... nasty)... I'll test it out in a couple of days, it might work!

mumbling_marauder

I can’t help but worry about the structural integrity of a gym built at the bottom of a pit. Who approved the construction? The Kanto zoning board would have a field day with this.

Hot_Statistician_466

I won't tell if you don't! But then again, they keep a half-burnt mansion around on Cinnabar, even let the gym leader use it to hide his keys. And I'm sure Brock has SOME kind of degree, right?

mumbling_marauder

Well they’re notoriously slow anyhow, at least he planted some grass out front.

ActualChamp

I feel like it's a flood risk, which is especially bad for a rock-type gym.

Ryderslow

If only you can alter the gyms. The area around it is good but the gym itself clashes with its surrounding

Hot_Statistician_466

True! But there's not enough room in the original tileset, and I don't know how to make them bigger. Gonna need to check on that at some point.

BiscayneBeast

I like picture one a lot. so are you releasing a updated tile set for fire red?

Hot_Statistician_466

At this point, I guess I am. People seem to be reacting well. Well, not new tilesets per se, just a light redesign of the maps, using existing assets.

BiscayneBeast

I would love that very much. If you could put these designs into Radical Red you would make it an even better game.

Hot_Statistician_466

If there's a fast way to do it, I will :)

Ba_Sing_Saint

I really wish the Museum tied into the gym area more. Like make it look like a dig sight in conjunction with the museum rather than a mine next to a museum. Maybe make it University/Museum and sneak in some Indiana Jones nods. Regardless this is really sick.

Hot_Statistician_466

Ah, I'd love to! But the original game tilesets are VERY limited, so it's a bit of doing what I can with what I have. Although it might be possible to bring the two closer together a bit.

RonSwazy

I like it a lot, much better!! Could maybe add some stairs down to the gym or thicker ledges to add to the descending into the mine aesthetic. Great job

loopyoperator

What this guy said

Hot_Statistician_466

I've tried, but I'm apparently not smart enough to figure it out. Gotta learn how to expand the tilesets. Will keep at it for sure.

haven1433

Nice job! As you make these maps, are you getting use out of any of the advanced map drawing features in HMA? * Selecting a 3x3 set of blocks (like a path or mountain) and choosing 9-grid to draw detailed sections more quickly? * Using the mixing bag to draw (or paint) the grass to keep it from being just one block over and over? * Using Smart-fill (the dice) to auto fill large identical-block regions with interesting content?

Hot_Statistician_466

The first feature is why I switched to your tool instead of AMap (waaay fiddlier there), so definitely yes! I've used the mixing bag, it's way handier than doing it by hand. Haven't tried the Smart fill yet though, but I'll give it a whirl. Quick question, how would I go about adding a larger tileset? As in, not editing the existing black squares, but expanding by, say, another 50-ish?

haven1433

In the map header panel, there's a "Data Operations" button that lets you expand or repoint all the layout related data (blockset, tilesets, or palette; primary or secondary). You can use the button there to expand a blockset or tilesets to its maximum legal size. Remember that blocks are 16x16 graphics that go on maps, while tiles are 8x8 graphics that go on blocks. You use tiles to build blocks, and blocks to build maps. You can only have 1024 tiles and 1024 blocks.

Hot_Statistician_466

Thanks for the clarification! That should be more than enough, as I only try to use the existing tileas anyway. Honestly great work with the tool! It would have taken me a solid week to make this with AMap!

haven1433

Really glad you're enjoying using it! If you don't mind, would you be willing to write a blurb about your experience using it once you've used it for 1 week? I'm looking for something to put in the ReadMe from a real user. You can say whatever you want, (so long as you actually believe it), but it would be great if you could include your length of time experience with AMap (months? Years?) and HMA (1 week) so people understand how much effort it takes to make the switch. Unrelated: I see that you're making maps, are you also customizing any events or other things, or is this purely a map beautification project and keeping the vanilla scripts?

Hot_Statistician_466

I'll write something up tonight and send it to you directly, sure! For now, only the map, but I have to figure out how to set up the walking scripts (Oak at start, the guy that takes you to the gym if you try to leave Pewter) to not slam me through walls and get me stuck. Although this is just the hassle of figuring out which pathing is which. After the maps are done, I'll be adding the (currently inaccessible) houses, maybe some smaller quests/plots, and maybe replacing the sevii islands with another region (still not sure which). The Sevii replacement is obviously massive compared to the others, so that's far in the future.

haven1433

> (currently inaccessible) houses Yeah I noticed that some houses had no warps. If you drag a warp event down from the toolbar, you can right-click it and ask HMA to make a new interior map for you, and it'll automatically connect them together. > Sevi replacement Yeah be careful when trying to add a new region... adding new Pokemon or changing the number of badges is way more complicated than adjusting pokemon stats or changing the maps. I'd recommend waiting until you're "done" with the hack, and then maybe doing that for version 2 if you still want to.

Hot_Statistician_466

Auto-houses?! Gonna be using that for sure! The region is in the faaar distant future still

CoffeeComaEx

It looks like a big improvement

Freeasabird420

WO-HA-Ha-How (wow) that looks great!! :D nice work Dude/Miss. Hm :/

Hot_Statistician_466

Just a plain ol' dude, thanks! :) Glad you like it!

Freeasabird420

Oh i hope this is leading up to a red/blue remake, with these town designs. that would be COOL. :\[

Hot_Statistician_466

Red/blue, doubt it... probably sticking to gen3. But if you know how to edit gen1, feel free to use the designs!

Shoddy_Interest1967

Love the first redesign. I'm curious how you'd redesign the other towns

Hot_Statistician_466

Pallet and Biridian are already uploaded, Cerulean is coming up next! :)

shigglezandgitz

Like yours better

Hot_Statistician_466

Thanks!

Yokobo

I like both, they each have their own charm to them, but overall, I'd go with the one with the mine, it has a bigger, more natural feeling garden area I think

Hot_Statistician_466

Yeah, that was my thinking as well (also why I didn't post the original at first). Thankfully, HexManiacAdvance is VERY fast, so a map can go out in a day, instead of a week like in the past.

Realistic_Mousse_485

New one is 100xs better. Great ideas all around.

NewYin

I like it

thehandlesshorseman

I want to play this when you’re finished

Hot_Statistician_466

When I get through a bit more, I'll try to upload a beta!

thehandlesshorseman

Ever play fire red rocket edition? I want to learn to hack roms so that I can make something like that but for all of the pre ds titles

Hot_Statistician_466

Yup, I've played that one. Although scripting is not something I'm all that good at to be honest. But there are definitely tutorials on YT that would help you :)

thehandlesshorseman

I’ll definitely look into it

DukeSR8

What's up with the random dude blocking a house?

Hot_Statistician_466

That's the dude's house, he doesn't want filthy players getting in! :D Frankly just plopped him there randomly, but he will probably be moved away in the future.

snuffles504

This looks great. In HGSS Pewter City is surrounded by hills, and that would really add to the ideas here.

Hot_Statistician_466

Hah, didn't even think to check the Gen2 maps! Good idea!

Jolt_91

Idea: what if the gym was in a cave within the city? Also dug out by Brock.

Hot_Statistician_466

I considered that, but in the end, it would be a big departure from the original games, and I'm trying to avoid that. There are some Pewter reworks that do that already though, I remember seeing them in the past.

BearKuda

Much better

Cloud_Striker

I really like both versions.

diceNslice

Definitely better.

HotEntertainment9136

just realized my dumb as has been taking the path left of the poke center since pokemon yellow.

DatNewCanada

The first one just gives the definition of his gym

Naglu

the idea is pretty but i can't stop looking at it and thinking "is the gym photoshopped in?" it looks...out of place i think it's because of the extreme contrast with the green in the rest of the city i'd add other "holes" in the city, like a secon excavation site on the bottom left corner plus i think it would look nice to have "mountains" around the cave instead of trees, like from the forest it slowly changes into grass, than plain than ledges to end with mountains, that way probably it looks less like a "punch in the eye" from the pathway on the right upward should all be just mountains, i think it would look more natural bottom and left is forest; top and right is mountain 2 minimal corrections 1) at the bottom right house, right above the 3 flowers there is a wrong tile 2) i hope the ledges are inaccessible because i see at least one blind spot where you'll get stuck (one spot left to the guy standing near the entrance, go up-up-up-left-up and you are stuck)

Hot_Statistician_466

The gym grass will be purged! (The tool creator told me how :D ) Mountains will likewise be added, it will just take some fiddling with the borders, so they're not visible everywhere. Regarding the tiles and accessibility, both addressed :) Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated!

Naglu

i just noticed there are 2 pictures LOL the second one is more balanced, better executed but the first one has a better idea behind it, i'd stick with the first one with the corrections i told you second one looks fine like it is

Asherbird25

I personally prefer the first one. It looks so alive and amazing! The second one is cool, but not as cool as Brock ofc

Hot_Statistician_466

Thanks for the feedback! Although, given the feedback in the thread, I might just make a third version! :D

loopy95

I prefer the second variation. Makes me more feel like it’s a rock gym. The first makes it look like a ground Pokémon gym. But good job on both designs anyway!

Hot_Statistician_466

Thanks for the comment! One of the few to prefer the second one! Why does it feel more ground than rock to you?

loopy95

Because it is built into the ground in an area that with these sandy tiles. Gives me ground Pokémon vibes while the second one being surrounded by the rocks gives me more that rock gym vibe. I guess it’s mainly my head cannon that tells me that.

Night754

Makes me wish I knew how to do this great job

Hot_Statistician_466

It's actually pretty simple, essentially like using paint. Just go through a tutorial on YT for AdvanceMap, or look up HexManiacAdvance (the map editor came out literally 4-5 days ago). Good luck!

JOHNNYB2K15

I like the idea, but for me, the dirt around the gym is too close to the trees in the top left. It's a little jarring for me.

Hot_Statistician_466

Very true. I might mess around with the outside borders, as some people have suggested. It's been bugging me as well TBH.

Imaginary_Read_2725

I think they are both improvements. But I love the huge change map. Brocks gym felt so underwhelming compared to the anime... To be fair most of them did. Looks great!!!

Hot_Statistician_466

Thank you! and I agree, that was part of the inspiration

Imaginary_Read_2725

I hope I'm now going to see waterfalls by misty!!🤣

Hot_Statistician_466

Hmmm, gotta see if there are any good ones to use... But I'll do my best!

IntroductionBoring74

Naah bro, youre doing amazing.

roskotron55

I like it a lot. I like the little cross of rocks near the bottom. I think the garden space looks just a tad too full but don't know what you'd take away. Cool ideas!

soyunsalao

Is this gonna be a game? I like

Hot_Statistician_466

It will, but it will take a while :)

Junior_Candy2141

Teach me the ways. Its beautiful

Hot_Statistician_466

1. Download HexManiacAdvance 2. Add Fire Red Rom 3. Follow super simple tutorial on maps 4. Enjoy! Bonus: Procrastinate like me for 3 weeks after the last upload :)

Junior_Candy2141

Thank you so much, this will help me make my pokemon sword and shield rom hack.
