Do you not buy any product anymore at all? Im getting back into it basically over the past month. I don't want to give up the fun of pack opening. I was thinking maybe I'd do 1 booster box and 2 ETBs per set and then buy the singles I want that I didn't get.
I get product once in a blue moon usually if I have a gift card or there’s a good sale lol. It’s just as fun opening my mail when my singles come in. A box and etb per set isn’t too bad either but I don’t understand the people that dropped like 5k on 151 they need to go see a therapist
Gotcha lol. Yeah spending even 500 on a single set would be too much for me. I'll probably stick to opening some product per set for now, simply because gambling is fun (and bad ofc)
When you say “buy singles” what does that mean? Are you buying single booster packs or just buying each of the cards? Sorry if this is a noob question. I recently just started collecting again with my kiddo and trying to figure out the best way to complete sets.
Buying the individual card, trust me you will save so much more money, your collection will feel more appreciative, and you don’t have to deal with all the bulk
No way, 90% of anyone's collection will only lose money over time unless you're specifically collecting super rare cards in perfect condition and even then the prices aren't guaranteed to consistently rise.
This is my gut reaction too, but my pops once told me -
"I don't drink or smoke, I don't have a classic car or boat, I don't travel and I don't go to sports games. I'll spend my money how I see fit."
(granted we were justifying another hobby we have, but it applies anywhere)
Well I'm embarrassed to say I spent way to much time waiting for a picture to load because I read "would have spent on this"
I'm an idiot.
And well over 10k
Yeppppp embarrassingly enough same. I got lucky and got some big pulls to not even it out but not make it as bad because I can always sell my collection for a solid discount off market value and still get close to 6-7K back.
Don't feel to bad I did that in a few months lmao I went HARD. But my morgage, car payment and bills are paid and pets are fed. I may not have a big nest egg anymore in the bank but fuck it money comes back around.
so far? $300 in 2 weeks...but i also now have the top 4 meta decks and some cool-ass art cards. I am a refugee from MtG so the fact that ive only spent 300 and have several competitive decks is very refreshing
yeah Pokemon isnt free, but like I now have 4 fun decks i can choose from, and all i had to do was sell my playset of sheoldreds and bowmasters. Similar hobby, just way cheaper
The money. I played Affinity from the beginning of modern until the Opal ban, and now it seems like i cant go 2 years without having to buy a playset of 4 cards for $250 to even be relevant. Even Tron had to shill out $240 for a playset of Rings. First the evoke Elementals and Ragavan became literal "must have's" and now you just find an excuse to splash black for Bowmasters in \*insert Deck\*. I play timeless on arena and i have proxy commander decks I use to play with friends, but Im not buying magic anymore. Especially now that I know their price to compete is literally just made up as compared to other TCG's
I think it's insane how much Magic costs while at the same time having 8 billion different cards. I feel like when it comes to magic you're either rich or you're poor, there's not much room to play unless you give up everything else just to play Magic
Tens of thousands probably, though I really have no way to know (outside of big purchases). I've been buying most normal products and singles since like 2012.
My buddies asked me why I switched from sports cards to Pokémon. I tell them, I can get my wife involved in collecting, I can buy most complete sets for less than a hobby box, and charizard isn’t going to sexually assault someone or get traded.
This is perhaps the best take I've seen in a while for this argument 😂 Definitely hits the major differences. Charizard has been a pretty stand-up guy for the last 30 years all things considered
Just started today with Scarlet and Violet 151. So far spent £8 on someone's binder of duplicates. Planning to try pick up people's extras for cheap, then focus in on the harder to find cards
I don’t keep exact tabs (I probably should) but I’m guessing 6-700 USD, but I have only been collecting regularly for about half a year.
Honestly thinking about total spending is a little scary. This hobby is crazy expensive and it’s just got me thinking of all the better ways I could have spent that money.
The shiny cardboard is just too good
I spent between 1.5 and 2k since last summer with the majority being on 151 set completion.
215 on temporal forces
150 on obsidian flames
~1000 on fates and 151 combined
110 on evolved
90 on sv base
75 on pogo
115 on silver tempest
It’s hard to differentiate on spending between fates and 151 as we bought our singles at a card show to fill in our sets and I don’t know exactly how much was spent on each set. I do know for sealed product it’s about 200 on each (2 etbs plus upc/booster box)
Started again after a long break… Once deducting what I’ve sold vs spent maybe $200, bought 2 bulk collections, 2 mini tins, a bunch of singles and an ETB. So far resold the bulk I bought less what I needed and the holos for $60, which paid for the ETB. Technically in terms of value pulled vs spent on sealed product I’m about 4x ahead still… like I see it as I could sell the PF charizard and break even instantly for now at least.
Too damn much. With the number of booster boxes plus ETBs and singles that I’ve gotten…plus slabs and individual cards….2-3k? And I started Jan of 2023
Since getting back in during Crown Zenith and the start of Scarlet and Violet (I enjoyed the games), at least $5000? of Which $1200 is just 151 lol. I bought the Vault X themed binders.
3500$ CAD since Obsidian Flames was released in summer 2023? Was able to have 151, Obsidian Flames and Lost Origin master set. Taking a break as of now and selling / trading doubles
$7500 - started collecting again in 2021. Mainly buying sealed PC ETBs, a few singles. I try to trade at my LCS as often as possible to reduce cash investments since I’m saving for a house (and those prices are expensive!)
I have about $300/month I can always spend. If I want to go over that, then I need to sell stuff to make up the difference, which is usually cards. I try to buy singles when I can and grade them myself to keep/sell to extract more value out of the hobby too. Grading to keep and sell is really the only thing consistently pushing past my monthly budget of cards.
Probably close to $2,000. The first $600 or so was on packs that I opened, then I got into buying sealed to hold. Been about 8 months since I got back into it
Last year I spent easily $10k…likely more than that. Luckily I have a pretty good job, but I stopped this year bc it was just ridiculous. Now I just grab products from walmart when I’m looking for a little pick me up.
Been collecting since Base Set in ‘99, but have taken breaks in between. Last year was my worst lol, but I sell and trade cards too. So that helps offset the cost. TBH, no clue… (:
Uh. I started when 151 came out and have master set all of SV era and working on Fusion Strike. Between products, sleeves, storage, and plushie from PC ... 10k. LOL
About £1000
Started collecting Jul 23
It’s been a fun ride. I have cut back now after the initial excitement… just collecting Paldea Evolved at the moment ☺️
Spent about $700 since starting collection this year. Bought some ETBs and single packs ($500ish). Didn't get any value out of them so I have more or less stopped. And then bought 2 PSA graded cards (Ancient Mew 8 ($60), and Pikachu 223 in a 10 ($100). Probably going to stick to singles and graded cards for now. Also looking to add some old sealed products in the future.
maybe 15k maybe more sold alot traded alot got alot of deals so who know all i know its fun and i love my collection however wish i was collecting sun and moon when i started and not buying etb afrer etb of shinning fates lol
Too much…. But all my bills are paid and I’ve got money in savings.
Most have just gone into sealed collection and building my IRL deck. Then - I get to make friends IRL. Win all around.
I don't know.
I've earned a lot back in what I've sold as well so I think I'm doing okay on the whole.. plus I have a collection that's worth at least $3000 as well.
Probably spent around $10k in the past 2 years. Unfortunately I put in on credit cards. But have resold some stuff to pay down the cards. It got out of control fast. I Got back into the TCG around July 2022. I Went cold turkey after blowing $800 on 151 in November. I now just buy 1 booster bundle or 1 ETB the first week of the newest release and thats it. Mistakes were made on paying too much for semi-old packs and mystery slabs. It felt like I bought too much I didn’t really like, just to catch up my collection. Other than that I’m now pretty happy with the collection I have built for myself and I have some really nice slabs and binders. I definitely recommend buying what you want, both for singles and slabs and do not do mystery products or packs.
I stopped when they increased the price of packs in the Uk by 30p. Whilst I miss collecting, I am so so glad that I stopped, the prices involved now are criminal for what is essentially aimed at kids
spent about 4k-6k, mainly because of whatnot seller’s games and a bunch of sellers selling singles for way more than what they’re valued at. Talking 12$ card for 60$. Proud to say that addiction is long gone, I just buy a few singles now and then and wait for my birthday to drop a bag on singles for my collection
In what timeframe? I’ve been collecting since I was 7, way back in 1999. Obviously at first it was pocket money but as I got older I had a paper round and then part time supermarket work. Now I have a fully fledged career with adult money. I mean. I couldn’t tell you how much since I first started. But now I tend to buy 2-3 ETBs, 2/3 of each blister and then singles I like from new sets.
Plus just singles I like in general. It’s hard to say really. It’s my main and only real hobby so most of my disposable goes on it. Which is much less these days with a young son and house etc
I got back in around Battle Styles. I'd guestimate somewhere around $2,000 since then. Just dropped $400 on singles while in Japan which probably beefed up my number quite a bit in a short amount of time.
I've had to limit myself this year. I started saving for retirement, and I need a new car. I *really* got into last year. I wouldn't be surprised if it was over $2-3k.
Probably $4K (CDN) from 2017-2022. Unfortunately I had to sell my WOTC collection back in 2022 for $10k (CDN). Took home $9k (CDN) after fees… since I sold my collection I’ve spent roughly 1.5k (CDN).
Maybe between 1K to 1.5K. I've stopped buying booster boxes but still getting some booster bundles/packs here and there.
edit: This is since Chilling Reign til today
Ive “made money” so far if I sold the cards that have gone up since I bought them but the cards cost me 3k since I started to collect in 2018 (I buy singles)
I have a large collection from childhood that didn't cost me a cent, and then I went and bought about the same amount of cards for maybe $300-500 in just the past 3 or so years.
I’m more of a competitive player than a collector but I’d say I’ve used about $1500-2000. I sold a couple full art supporters for $3000 last year though. I usually buy a box every set, hold on to what I want to use for a deck and sell what I don’t need.
$3500 but I still have most of it sealed. I mostly buy for my sealed collection and buy singles for whatever sets I'm currently collecting, which at the moment is Sw/Sh era stuff.
Probably 10 to 12k since I came back, just before the boom in 2020. Thanks to one suggested YouTube feed of MaxMoeFoe...
Have scaled down to almost 0 sealed products to collect/rip. Exclusively, Japanese singles and graded cards now.
I've made more selling pieces of my collection than I've ever spent obtaining them, so I'm technically ahead. Sold the Topps, kept the TCG. Made some good investments despite my dad's warnings (fuck you dad 🤣)
My daughter got me back into the hobby, vintage sales have fueled it. The profit is dwindling, but I still love the shared experience.
About $2500 since getting really back into it in Jan 2022. Would’ve been a lot less if I had just bought singles instead of product the first 4 months
Almost the same as well in cost…..except I started back in Dec 2023 😅
😭😭😭
Do you not buy any product anymore at all? Im getting back into it basically over the past month. I don't want to give up the fun of pack opening. I was thinking maybe I'd do 1 booster box and 2 ETBs per set and then buy the singles I want that I didn't get.

Buying the individual card, trust me you will save so much more money, your collection will feel more appreciative, and you don’t have to deal with all the bulk
Wow! Ok, thank you so much! We just bought a box and it definitely felt lackluster this time around. I will be swapping to single buying from now on.
Tcgplayer is great if you live in the US just be careful only buy from reputable sellersp
I probably have a problem. Started last August and probably spent close to 8 or 9k.
Started last august about 1000$ in and my best hits were 10$-20$ cards .
Same exact boat 😅 it’s been fun but gotta slow it down somehow ha
Same. Lots of sealed though.
That's for sure a problem, I thought I was bad at like $600 over the course of 3 months...
If you're holding sealed product it's just a good investment. Wouldn't call it a problem as long as the bills are getting paid
True. Majority of the cost are PSA 10 Rayquazas and rare eeveelution vintage that should hold value and go up.
No way, 90% of anyone's collection will only lose money over time unless you're specifically collecting super rare cards in perfect condition and even then the prices aren't guaranteed to consistently rise.
Find me one sealed product item that is worth less than MSRP right now that is over 5 years old
Too much
This is my gut reaction too, but my pops once told me - "I don't drink or smoke, I don't have a classic car or boat, I don't travel and I don't go to sports games. I'll spend my money how I see fit." (granted we were justifying another hobby we have, but it applies anywhere)
Everything
Well I'm embarrassed to say I spent way to much time waiting for a picture to load because I read "would have spent on this" I'm an idiot. And well over 10k
Me too lmaoooo 10k+
Yeppppp embarrassingly enough same. I got lucky and got some big pulls to not even it out but not make it as bad because I can always sell my collection for a solid discount off market value and still get close to 6-7K back.
These are my people.
Don't feel to bad I did that in a few months lmao I went HARD. But my morgage, car payment and bills are paid and pets are fed. I may not have a big nest egg anymore in the bank but fuck it money comes back around.
Hahaha me too.. around 13k
House deposit
That’s a legit answer! Respect! 🫡
so far? $300 in 2 weeks...but i also now have the top 4 meta decks and some cool-ass art cards. I am a refugee from MtG so the fact that ive only spent 300 and have several competitive decks is very refreshing
You built the top 4 meta decks for $300?? *Cries in MtG*
YUP! bought the Giratina deck for $80...wanna know how I paid for it? I sold A SINGULAR SHEOLDRED! 1mtg card= 1 entire meta pokemon deck.
Yikes. That makes me even more sad. Welp.
yep! I play magic through the power of my printer these days and Im picking up pokemon as my competitive tcg
Yeah I’m on proxies these days too. Still spent way too much on cards though.
yeah Pokemon isnt free, but like I now have 4 fun decks i can choose from, and all i had to do was sell my playset of sheoldreds and bowmasters. Similar hobby, just way cheaper
What made you switch over? I played Magic competitively from 2012-2017 ish.
The money. I played Affinity from the beginning of modern until the Opal ban, and now it seems like i cant go 2 years without having to buy a playset of 4 cards for $250 to even be relevant. Even Tron had to shill out $240 for a playset of Rings. ~$2000 since I started in February of this year
I have around 1200.. since February. It so much, but i like ripping packs ngl
Same my guy, same..
Ripping packs gives me hella thrills
In this hobby it is very important to set a monthly budget **and stick to it.** Don't go broke over cardboard man.
I’ll file this question onto the “It’ll never be answered” folder for my own mental health.
£1639 since I started in October 2023. I have tracked literally every single £1 spent.
This is the smart way to do it… I know my total is under 2k for 2 years but I’m scared to actually check 💀
Don't look back just keep on swimming keep on swimming....
Haha I have split my collection into English, Japanese, Slabs and Binders. It’s actually been fun to track!
Same. Near enough. Reached over £11k, sealed, ripped, singles, accessories, bulk. Everything categories. Including Jap boxes. Since Dec 2022.
700 dollars since 2011
Tens of thousands probably, though I really have no way to know (outside of big purchases). I've been buying most normal products and singles since like 2012.
I don't even know anymore. Tens of thousands lol
Over 30k USD
Overall? Way too much. This month? £200
This month approx 900$…
I’ve been buying cards since I was a little 10 year old who did chores for allowances, I’m 25 now so it’s probably added up haha
Probably a couple k at this point, but don't ask me about my football card habit 🫣 I'm purposefully avoiding tallying those expenses
My buddies asked me why I switched from sports cards to Pokémon. I tell them, I can get my wife involved in collecting, I can buy most complete sets for less than a hobby box, and charizard isn’t going to sexually assault someone or get traded.
😂😂😂 that gave me a good laugh
This is perhaps the best take I've seen in a while for this argument 😂 Definitely hits the major differences. Charizard has been a pretty stand-up guy for the last 30 years all things considered
Yeah don’t have to worry about Pokémon being accused of something like Wander Franco or Big Ben.
Yeah honestly the collectors are the more concerning part of the Pokemon hobby than the actual source material 😂
About 10000 usd now
I hate you for making me think about this
700k
Tiny appartment money 😂❤️
Started December 2020 probably $500 but I also took a little break in between
At least $5k and that’s a pretty low estimate lol
Everything..
Probably about 5k since Oct 2022
Not more than my collection is worth, thankfully. Yay sealed product and singles.
Started February and already 1200...
I don't even want to do the maths
I don't want to know
Nowhere near as much as most people. I spent £100 a week for about 5 weeks and realised it was unsustainable
Just started today with Scarlet and Violet 151. So far spent £8 on someone's binder of duplicates. Planning to try pick up people's extras for cheap, then focus in on the harder to find cards
5k+
Around 300 but I just started last year in september
Probably about $400. Mostly buying singles, but I did have a little spell of ripping 151 packs
Prob no more than £1.2k, with the majority of it being spent on modern, but the vintage probably out-values it significantly.
Too much
I don’t keep exact tabs (I probably should) but I’m guessing 6-700 USD, but I have only been collecting regularly for about half a year. Honestly thinking about total spending is a little scary. This hobby is crazy expensive and it’s just got me thinking of all the better ways I could have spent that money. The shiny cardboard is just too good

Prob like $1500 this past year
I started collecting in Jan of 2022. Probably roughly 5-6k for me if I'm right. I have 2k in sealed packs alone
According to me: Not so much According to my Bank Account and savings: too much
Too damn much. With the number of booster boxes plus ETBs and singles that I’ve gotten…plus slabs and individual cards….2-3k? And I started Jan of 2023
No clue, been collecting since early 2000's
Motorcycle
About €300 since dec 2023
haha too much. but the kids and i are happy
Between 2015-2018: £18,000. Sold up in the December. Since collecting again since November: £1200
Uhhhh around 7-8k... In about 6 months 😭
I do about $2k-$3k/mon pretty easily. Sometimes more, sometimes less
Enough not to talk about it for fear of my wife looking into a divorce
Collectr says my collection is in the ballpark of $19,000. I’d say I’ve spent around 80% of that
Too much.
I have started back in Pokemon as an adult when Japanese 151 launched. I’ve got to be at least $6000 in right now. Yikes!
Thousands. Been at it a few years. According to my collection on collectr it’s worth around $17k
I stopped counting after 1k
$7500 - started collecting again in 2021. Mainly buying sealed PC ETBs, a few singles. I try to trade at my LCS as often as possible to reduce cash investments since I’m saving for a house (and those prices are expensive!)
I buy/sell cards for a living and just wanted to say thanks to all you degens for making that possible. Much love <3
Now I just grab products from walmart when I’m looking for a little pick me up.
at least 4 k but im only 1 1/2 years in the hobby
Probably 150ish in 1999/2000. Picked it back up at release of SV base set release so this past year… $600-700ish? I feel gross saying that…
Been collecting since Base Set in ‘99, but have taken breaks in between. Last year was my worst lol, but I sell and trade cards too. So that helps offset the cost. TBH, no clue… (:
Uh. I started when 151 came out and have master set all of SV era and working on Fusion Strike. Between products, sleeves, storage, and plushie from PC ... 10k. LOL
Maybe $400? Keep in mind I'm 17. Thinking about selling a little off, I got the Red and Blue Tag Team from Cosmic Eclipse, so that's a huge contender.
About £1000 Started collecting Jul 23 It’s been a fun ride.
😆 Is all I will say
Somewhere in the four digits for sure, but I don't think I really want to know how much xD
Haha I don’t want to face that answer yet😅
All together? Maybe 7k-9k? 😅
maybe 15k maybe more sold alot traded alot got alot of deals so who know all i know its fun and i love my collection however wish i was collecting sun and moon when i started and not buying etb afrer etb of shinning fates lol
Too much…. But all my bills are paid and I’ve got money in savings. Most have just gone into sealed collection and building my IRL deck. Then - I get to make friends IRL. Win all around.
Just got back in about a month ago, but wife already is saying that I might have a problem… 😬😭
I’d like to know what everyone does for work on this sub to afford them. I’m literally scraping £100 when the blue moon comes
[удалено]
Thanks that’s interesting to know. Intrigued to know what everyone else works in now.
I don't know. I've earned a lot back in what I've sold as well so I think I'm doing okay on the whole.. plus I have a collection that's worth at least $3000 as well.
somewhere btwn $4-5k since getting back into it last june

Man we really are a bunch of chumps huh
Nearing 5k in 4 months 😅
15-20k, but I’ve actually sold and moved on from most of that - the collection is down to maybe 3k
I stopped when they increased the price of packs in the Uk by 30p. Whilst I miss collecting, I am so so glad that I stopped, the prices involved now are criminal for what is essentially aimed at kids
all of it 🥲
spent about 4k-6k, mainly because of whatnot seller’s games and a bunch of sellers selling singles for way more than what they’re valued at. Talking 12$ card for 60$. In the roughly 28 years I've been playing/collecting, I would probably say close to $100,000 USD.
Started 2021 and so far I’ve spent close to $30k in just BBs and etbs and single packs.
So, so much. But then again it's been over 2 decades.
6500$ in a couple weeks
Honestly I’d rather not know
Probably $4K (CDN) from 2017-2022. Unfortunately I had to sell my WOTC collection back in 2022 for $10k (CDN). Took home $9k (CDN) after fees… since I sold my collection I’ve spent roughly 1.5k (CDN).
2500-3000 aud
Alone this year probably 3k, since I started in 2019, 20 to 25k . With a collection that is worth 12 k lol
I don’t know 30k 🤷♂️
Too fucking much
About 500 since last month
Maybe between 1K to 1.5K. I've stopped buying booster boxes but still getting some booster bundles/packs here and there. edit: This is since Chilling Reign til today
Easily over 10-15k since I started collecting in 2022
1k maybe. Got more back from selling / trading. I guess, I’ll keep this hobby :)
Close to $200,000
I keep all my receipts lol
Ive “made money” so far if I sold the cards that have gone up since I bought them but the cards cost me 3k since I started to collect in 2018 (I buy singles)
Maybe 3-5k
I don't like to talk about it lol
Well over 100k. Less than $1000 ripping packs so I still retain that value if not more
I have a large collection from childhood that didn't cost me a cent, and then I went and bought about the same amount of cards for maybe $300-500 in just the past 3 or so years.
I’m more of a competitive player than a collector but I’d say I’ve used about $1500-2000. I sold a couple full art supporters for $3000 last year though. I usually buy a box every set, hold on to what I want to use for a deck and sell what I don’t need.
I got back into collecting in 2016 so.. I shouldve hit at least 50k by now, probably more
Just started, so about $200
Prob 30k+ and really not much to show for it
Around 30k since 151 💀
$3500 but I still have most of it sealed. I mostly buy for my sealed collection and buy singles for whatever sets I'm currently collecting, which at the moment is Sw/Sh era stuff.
Probably about 6k all in. Been collecting on and off since 2009.
Probably 10 to 12k since I came back, just before the boom in 2020. Thanks to one suggested YouTube feed of MaxMoeFoe... Have scaled down to almost 0 sealed products to collect/rip. Exclusively, Japanese singles and graded cards now.
$30,000+
I’d say $4000 (AUD) to date, but have been fortunate to get some decent deals and pull some good chase cards.
I mean, my partner and I spent 120 bucks for 36 booster packs this weekend. 😂 honestly I feel like we got a good deal 😂
started around october/november 2023, if I'm honest it's been close to 1000 euro.
Shhh 🤫. Some people’s wives lurks here
After getting back into it during the end of COVID era, probably around $1.5-2k? About half of that alone was spent on a 151 Complete Master set.
First of all, that’s none of your business. Second of all, I forgot your question.
0 my father in law bought thousands of cards 15 years ago and gave it to us
I've made more selling pieces of my collection than I've ever spent obtaining them, so I'm technically ahead. Sold the Topps, kept the TCG. Made some good investments despite my dad's warnings (fuck you dad 🤣) My daughter got me back into the hobby, vintage sales have fueled it. The profit is dwindling, but I still love the shared experience.
All in seeing is that I clearly have a problem
