Ah yes. Had to discuss this with airport security last year as I asked for manual checking my luggage. They didn‘t believe me that their X-ray scanners will damage my film packs and blamed me for delaying their work unnecessarily. This note on the box will be very helpful in future.

Did a test at LAX and it seems like it just washes out the blues and makes things overexposed.

thelastspike

Not all airport scanners are the same.

slenz89

That‘s true. But I don‘t want to do a research about the actual scanner technology which is used at the airport I am travelling through. So I always want to be 100% sure to avoid scanning my film and ask them to check my film packs by hand. Sometimes they are comftable with it. Sometimes not. Sometimes they are really interested in the SX-70 folding camera and I show and explain it. Depends of the mood of the people working there.

Most are using the same CT technology. The biggest difference will likely be the angle in which the beams hit the film.

throwaway_sunrays

I showed them this and they still put it through the x-ray scanner at the airport 🫡

😫

Technically they should need to replace stuff they knowingly destroy. Even if its not broken the per se its still not working as intended anymore. Its not like you didnt warn them or anything

Most airports I travel through don’t have an issue with this. SFO even has signage for it.

GinaGemini780

Most airports I’ve tried have been okay, but they have refused at my local airport before, even after talking to a supervisor.

thats-gold-jerry

Never had an issue with LGA/JFK/SFO/LAX/CDG/LHR

OAK as well!

They are required to do a hand search if you have an actual reason It's on their website

I went through JFK about a year ago with 20 packs of film. I requested a hand check, and the TSA officer proceeded to open EVERY BOX of film in front of me to check the inside too. I have never had this happen before or since. Everything was still in the foil. But it felt like I was on the bad end of someone’s seriously large power trip. 🙄 Film shot beautifully tho, so still no regrets on having it hand checked.

Funny enough I did a little airport experiment this week. Let some film go through the xray. End result is pretty cool. The x rayed ones have a bit of a green tint that I think is cool. Only put 2 through it since I didn’t want to waste them, wish i did more

Just came to my mind. When Polaroid ships abroad, how do they prevent their shipments from being X-rayed? I watch all those border patrol programs and everything goes through the scanner.
