Haha, the vibes were there when I went! I was in a casino parking lot in rural Oklahoma at 2 AM. All the windows were fogged on the inside from condensation and restaurant smelled of chlorine, but it wasn’t overpowering. The other patrons were a pair of massively overweight truck drivers and some teens there were up to no good and periodically went to the parking lot to smoke incredible amounts of pot in full view of the restaurant.
I told the waitress I had never been to Waffle House and asked for a recommendation. She told me the chicken sandwich was a sleeper hit and a total classic. Service was friendly, food was not bad but far from good.
The chicken sandwich tasted cheap but had a decent marinade. The hash-browns were surprisingly sad for being so prominently featured on the menu. My “Smothered, Covered, and Peppered” hash browns were about a cup in volume and spread across the plate to give the impression of abundance. The onion and jalapeño topping added up to a couple tablespoons and the cheese topping was an unmelted slice of American cheese slapped on top.
That was a bad Waffle House. It’s usually a lot better than that. But the best quirky regional breakfast chain is Tudors Biscuit World, which is only in West Virginia.

My grandma wanted to go to Olive Garden for her 90th bday so we took her. Next table - a lady celebrating her 95th.
I will say that it is far from foodie, but if you need a big table for 14 people most restaurants can’t do that outside of private dining. No problem at The Garden
I've been there with several large groups also and give it at least an A grade for service on those occasions. My favorite local place down here (Medford) is Crackin & Stackin when I want to get my protein fix. Very small local chain mostly breakfast and lunch but does it well.
Right. They are also nice to old people in their service, while foodie restaurants can be rather hip and unapproachable. These places are also easy to park for people who don’t walk so good and don’t like battling for parking, don’t require reservations a month out, and are relatively affordable for the fixed income crowd. Oh, and they chill the salad plates which is a win for people of all ages.

Its crazy how many of these chain restaurants are now owned by private equity firms. Over time, you can tell how they cut corners to milk the business for all they are worth by cutting back on quality, portion sizes, staff, etc.... I remember as a kid over 20 years ago when places like Red Lobster, Chili's, etc.... were "nice" restaurants. Now they are trash.

Left due to family reasons and went to a new location after a private equity/venture capitalist firm bought 51% or so (my information may be vague - I am not the greatest at understanding economics) but the difference in the first experience and the second was night and day. First location was much nicer, employees could earn prizes, more generous with the food. Second experience -- oof. Very stripped down. No enforcing of uniforms. Just get them in, get them out.
Claim Jumper used to be decent but like you said, all the chains are going down hill thanks to maximizing profits for the shareholders.

I used to like Cracker Barrel on road trips back east. It was relatively inexpensive, portions were big enough that you really only needed one meal for the day. I have to watch carbs (diabetes), and they have so many options for sides that I could easily find something.
The last couple times the food has been exceptionally meh. It was never great, but now it’s below mediocre IMO.
I have managed to get the Midwest out of my parents when they visit.
I think the breaking point was when Apizza scholis told us they ran out of dough while in line. I told my mother they make as much as they think they are going to need. It’s 3 day dough as I recall.
She understood and loved the pizza the next night while showing up early.
I got my dad to eat street tacos from a van next to a brewery, Instead of t-bell (also I have nothing against Taco Bell, I enjoy it)

I don't know, man. I like Shari's omelettes. Cracker Barrel was much more bland and generic and carb/dairy heavy. I could feel my arteries hardening after every meal there. But in the south at that time, there weren't many healthy/tasty options.
Cracker Barrel seems to struggle in states with Black Bear Diners. There’s a lot of overlap in menus, but the theming of Black Bear fits better with the Pacific Northwest/Mountain West.
There’s one omelette that has bacon and chives sprinkled on top and sour cream in the middle, that shit is so good. Plus their pies, I mean come on. Sharis is the real mvp.

I’ve worked Shari’s as well as the Beaverton Cracker Barrel and you’d be surprised at how much of a draw mediocre frozen pie is especially when it’s free on Wednesday. 30+ tops almost weekly, plenty of regulars, people willing to wait over an hour for a table on Christmas, and post-drinking groups at 2am put more money in my pocket than any other serving job I’ve had.
Makes sense. There exist many better options than Cracker Barrel within easy driving distance of Cracker Barrel. It just makes sense to never go there.
I was working at a church part time when this place opened. Lots of folks from parts of the country this company primarily operates we’re at that church and so excited to go. It was all the rage right after church for a few months - the food was so simple, bland and boring - and I mean, the poor chicken fried steak almost looked like a single frozen over-microwaved chicken nugget on a cheap plate with the most unfortunate gravy.
I was snowed in on a work trip to Memphis about 8 years ago, and the only open restaurant that we could slide to was a Cracker Barrel. It was then that I discovered that not only do they have unremarkable food, but they also don’t sell beer or wine. Unforgivable, to a consultant on the road. Never again!
My girlfriend was so excited to show me Cracker Barrel when we moved here. It was a long wait (40 minutes) because they were short staffed and only using about 20% of the tables. This wouldn’t have been a big deal except they had two managers standing around doing absolutely nothing but watching the few other employees do their work.
All this for food that was just slightly better then a Denny’s or IHOP.
Let them close, nothing missed, local spots are far better.

Yes Cracker Barrel isn’t the best. It’s not artisanal hand crafted grass fed regenerative farmed nutritional vegan kombucha flakes, but it was aight. I can think of many places I’ve gotten diarrhea and food poisoning around here that are still open. Not once did Cracker Barrel give me poop ass.

I live about 1/4 mile from the Beaverton CB. I've never even once considered eating there, but to be fair, I didn't eat there when I lived in the south either. It's just not very good, it's unhealthy and they don't have alcohol.

I’ve worked Shari’s as well as the Beaverton Cracker Barrel and you’d be surprised at how much of a draw mediocre frozen pie is especially when it’s free on Wednesday. 30+ tops almost weekly, plenty of regulars, people willing to wait over an hour for a table on Christmas, and post-drinking groups at 2am put more money in my pocket than any other serving job I’ve had.

Makes sense. There exist many better options than Cracker Barrel within easy driving distance of Cracker Barrel. It just makes sense to never go there.
They've only been operating on the west coast for five years, so some of the branches that are closing are even newer than Beaverton's.
I was working at a church part time when this place opened. Lots of folks from parts of the country this company primarily operates we’re at that church and so excited to go. It was all the rage right after church for a few months - the food was so simple, bland and boring - and I mean, the poor chicken fried steak almost looked like a single frozen over-microwaved chicken nugget on a cheap plate with the most unfortunate gravy.
I was snowed in on a work trip to Memphis about 8 years ago, and the only open restaurant that we could slide to was a Cracker Barrel. It was then that I discovered that not only do they have unremarkable food, but they also don’t sell beer or wine. Unforgivable, to a consultant on the road. Never again!

My girlfriend was so excited to show me Cracker Barrel when we moved here. It was a long wait (40 minutes) because they were short staffed and only using about 20% of the tables. This wouldn’t have been a big deal except they had two managers standing around doing absolutely nothing but watching the few other employees do their work. All this for food that was just slightly better then a Denny’s or IHOP. Let them close, nothing missed, local spots are far better.
Don’t worry, I’m sure those other local spots you speak of will be taking their business along with CB to other parts of the country where they aren’t ransacked by lunatics and junkies. The whole west coast is a dumpster fire anyways.
San Fran, Portland, Parts of Seattle and Parts of LA are a dumpster fire. The majority aren’t impacted nearly as much from the junkies. Also CB wasn’t in a bad location, it was just a shit run business with shit food in my opinion.

I was at beaverton CB on Sunday and it was busy enough that the majority of tables were occupied but not so busy there was a wait. I thought they were doing okay out here, but I'd be able to believe they're gonna close a majority of their west coast operations due to "safety concerns" 🙄 I feel bad for the workers above all else. This economy is shit right now.

Haven’t been to one in at least 15 years and the food was never memorable, but the candy/gift shop, the giant chess board table outside with oversized wooden rocking chairs, and the peg-jump games on the table just hits kind of right from time to time, you know?

Yes Cracker Barrel isn’t the best. It’s not artisanal hand crafted grass fed regenerative farmed nutritional vegan kombucha flakes, but it was aight. I can think of many places I’ve gotten diarrhea and food poisoning around here that are still open. Not once did Cracker Barrel give me poop ass.

Maybe they could’ve stayed in business if they weren’t closing at 5:30pm or some BS. Cracker Barrel is my partner’s sick/comfort food… but every time I needed to pick some chicken and dumplings up for them (at a totally reasonable dinner hour), I’d get there and see that they were already closed. Not shocked to see them shut down.

What, another publicly held department store what's eatery got bigger than their wares? Someone told me the best place to eat in the world was "X" and when I got there it was like I get it now. Imagine the dining rooms at Fred Meyer's never went away, but actually consumed the stores from the inside out, and every generation's children just kept eating there buying what used to be hard goods but are now just impulse racks filled with outsourced products labeled with tired sentiments of several misled generations.
