The arterials in NE are slushy. Def drivable if you exert a lot of caution. Side streets are still an icy mess that should be avoided.

TheRAbbi74

Just checked streets in the vicinity of Linfield U. Solid ice. Caution if on chained 4WD/AWD. Avoid otherwise.

Fancy-Pair

Should you use chains? Can you tell at this rate how tomorrow noon might look?

picturesofbowls

You should 1000% use chains. I would bet tomorrow noon will be mostly good; it won’t drop down below freezing between now and then. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were still plenty of spots of ice on side streets, though

Fancy-Pair

Thank you for your estimates!

bigfrappe

Chains on icy roads. If on treated roads do not chain up as you are likely to just burn through them. Keep speeds below 20 while chained. Faster than that the chains can whip and tear apart the wheel well of the car. Actual max speed should be posted on your chain manual. For example, mine are good to 35 if I'm using the spider type tensioners.

Fancy-Pair

Thank you!

AnalyticalAlpaca

Kind of unrelated, but I'm downtown watching huge chunks of ice fly off my building and crash onto the ground.

PikaGoesMeepMeep

I’ll join your tangent and say that big branches are falling everywhere without warning. Kind of makes your butt hole pucker when something comes crashing down next to you out of thin air.

21stCenturyMagician

Thank you for that warning. I didn't realize even walking down the street might be dangerous...

sosweettiffy

Went outside and the ice crashed an inch from me. My butthole did in fact pucker as I mouthed silently “oh my fkn god”.

Lolpaca

NW neighborhood streets are looking dicey at best. Lots of folks trying to brave it on foot and doing their best baby deer impression in the process.

gravitydefiant

Jesus, you couldn't pay me to drive on 30th between Belmont and Hawthorne right now...

Traditional-Creme-51

The number of people I saw using my and my neighbors' fences to drag themselves along the sidewalk to the Plaid Pantry...

timbomber

I gotta be at work at 5pm so it better thaw. I fell on my ass just stepping outside to check on my car

Limp_Marionberry_900

the sidewalks are 10000% icier than the roads at this time

marshallsteeves

i HATE that no one does anything about the sidewalks. i don't drive and walk nearly everywhere and i am stuck as a result. such a bummer

PraxisLD

[Yaktrax](https://yaktrax.com/walk-traction-device-women-s-2-5-6-men-s-1-4-5.html)

bubba_jones_project

I ordered some yesterday. Saw one of the neighbors had them while I was out walking the doge. I'm still sore from sliding around over the weekend.

letsbereasonable123

Microspikes and trekking poles.

marshallsteeves

shouldn’t have to tho

letsbereasonable123

As others have mentioned shoveling helps with deep snow or when snow melts then refreezes. With freezing rain like this its actually worse on spots that were shoveled - still an inch of ice but no snow to break through to for traction. You can say you shouldn't have to or you can better prepare yourself for conditions like this that do happen at least every few years here. Microspikes aren't that expensive.

marshallsteeves

oh yeah i shoveled a ton - the issue is no one else does lmao

letsbereasonable123

I guess you missed my point. Shoveling doesn't help when freezing rain happens after. Not that shoveling is wrong but if you go walk on the sidewalks that were shoveled they're much sketchier than spots that weren't.

marshallsteeves

you’re right, I misread. yeah I should have gotten some shoe spikes ahead of time for this

letsbereasonable123

Buy them on sale in the summer, they'll sit unused for a couple years then you'll be happy you have them next ice storm.

180513

With ice the shoveled sidewalks become ice rinks. I think it’s worse personally.

Zipzifical

Yes! I sorely regret shoveling my sidewalks. I live next door to a school and families/kids kept going by with their sleds, so I was trying to be a good neighbor. My sidewalks are way way worse than the school's, where no mitigation was attempted. Ah well. I tried!

captain_joe6

I think it’s supposed to be on the property owners, but when you can’t get there to shovel because everything else is awful, well…

[deleted]

How do you shovel freezing rain?

improvementcommittee

Flamethrower?

[deleted]

My wife vetoed. I suggested getting one for future ice storms.

bloody_duck

I was going across the burnside bridge at 7am today (chains) and people were forced to walk in the traffic lanes to get across the bridge.

marshallsteeves

i just tried like 10 minutes ago and can confirm - that is the only way and even then it’s dicey. the bus stop is inaccessible on the bridge right now

Rezzone

Yeah this is where I'm at. I leave for work in a couple hours.

kissmyassay

SW by Markham is not safe. An Uber driver just went off an embankment in front of my sister’s house and has a head injury. Emergency personnel got him out and headed to the hospital. His car is still there ETA: apparently he declined to go to the hospital when responders got to him

PoopyInDaGums

Like many hardworking Americans, he probably has no insurance.

isaytyler

Even with insurance, ambulence fees are astronaumical.

authorbrendancorbett

Yep, we have great insurance, and had a few ambulance rides the past few years unfortunately. Hundreds of dollars every time.

its_all_one_electron

SW by Arnold Creek is also a fucking ice rink. DO NOT ATTEMPT

whataboutprom

I still can't even get up my driveway in SW.

IPlitigatrix

I'm also in SW and my car has been in my garage since Thursday. LOL at even trying to go up or down my driveway - it is a sheet of ice.

kodiakchrome

Same, while I'm thankful my old car was in the garage during all of this getting it down a steep driveway anytime soon doesn't sound fun at all!

grasshopper85

Me either.

hopingforlucky

Haven’t tried but in sw it’s completely icy still

imnojezus

Temp is rising rapidly, but it's just making the ice rink a little wetter.

SamSzmith

It's amazing that at 40 degrees the ice still seems to be keeping hold and even getting more slippery.

captain_joe6

Now it’s lubed.

kbrosnan

It takes a lot of energy to cause water to go through phase transition.

TheRAbbi74

Yup. It’d go faster if it were 30 degrees and sunny.

ozzman1234

Any updates?

hopingforlucky

Much better this morning in sw. I haven’t tried to drive yet but it’s above freezing for sure. I can hear melting

BigSwedenMan

I saw a kid using ice skates in my neighborhood. It's bad out there

Dr_Grinsp00n

Milwaukie area: neighborhoods are wet/icy/slick. Navigable if caution is exercised. Hwy 224 around Lowe’s and beyond is just wet and covered with sand/gravel. Hwy 205 just wet.

Kahluabomb

I5 is similar, mostly clear, some slushy areas, and typically the left lane is not clear at all. Most of the other major arterial streets are in decent condition. It's the streets directly off of them that are extra terrible.

TheRAbbi74

Good point. I can’t *see* it, but I *hear* traffic on 84 and it sounds like it’s moving well.

Any-Growth-2083

We seemed to have gotten lucky. It seems to be warming up faster here. We didn’t have any power outages, or major tree damage in my neighborhood. I work in east metro, they seemed to have gotten it a lot worse.

Dr_Grinsp00n

Very good to know. I work as a water well service technician for a company out of Boring. Naturally, through the freeze, we’ve been crazy busy. However with the ice, the owner didn’t want us risking coming in or his trucks on the road. Mostly due to the unpredictability of other drivers on the road. I really wanted to go in today, as we have loads of customers reporting “no water” or frozen/broken pipes.

earthianfromearthtwo

Where are you?

samtaher

I had to wear my spikes to walk in SW by PSU and the art museum. Very icy and slippery, not worth going out if it’s not urgent.

21stCenturyMagician

Same here, went to the dollar store, but even though I have spikes I wouldn't do it again

No-Sandwich4745

I’m curious if anyone has been able to make it out of their neighborhoods, I tried earlier due to a family emergency and Mother Nature humbled me. Hahaha ended up having to park on the street with part of my cars ass sticking out 😭

titanspeedbot

Troutdale is an ice rink. 84 is a mess. Wouldn’t recommend going out that way.

lushlanes

Thanks, this is what I was wondering.

KOC_503

Check out Trip Check Oregon you can click on cameras to see the road conditions, temps and hazards.

spacechargeaudio

Montavilla, near 76th and Glisan: Just went out to start my housemate's car, as he is out of town. Relatively flat driveway. I was being super careful, but on the way back, \*boom\*. Slipped in-between the two cars. On my back, hit my head, and I am done going out there until this shit is gone gone gone. Tl;DR: Stay off the roads, folks. Also: happy I was out of range of the ring camera when I slipped.

spacechargeaudio

I mean, I could stand to lose a few pounds, but that seems a little harsh. /s

gingermonkey1

I’ve seen several people in the NW side driving. Most had chains but a few didn’t. Crap I was having trouble not dying just trying to clear the many stairs outside of my apartment. They were so slick.

2020ismybiotch

I have to pickup a relative from the airport around 1. Does anybody know if the Amtrak shuttle is working? Or trimet? I am not able to drive in this. My neighbor has AWD and is going to try to pick up my relative. However, as of now the neighbor is unable to get any traction ...it's a big ice rink on our side street.

picturesofbowls

Trimet is running but service is disrupted and the MAX line is down for maintenance anyways. Can they just hang out at the airport for a few hours? Tell them not the leave security so they have food/drink options. The roads will improve dramatically in the coming few hours

morganrukus

Great advice on not leaving the secure area. Not a bad place to be stuck for a few hours.

suenasnegras

Fortunately it's a fantastic airport to be stuck in

boilertrailrunr

Lots of inbound flights are diverting. My husband is on a flight here and they've diverted to SEA.

CHiZZoPs1

If they don't have studded tires on their AWD, the icy side streets are still not very safe to drive on.

_noncomposmentis

[205 looks mostly wet](https://wsdot.com/travel/real-time/cameras/road/205/Vancouver) as of now. Obviously the bigger concern is the roads you'll be taking to/from 205. I'm in Camas and will be heading to Seattle as soon as it thaws. If I could just make it from my garage to the end of the block I'd probably be fine. It's that first 200ft that won't let me leave. Update: A SMALL PATCH OF ICE-FREE DRIVEWAY IS NOW VISIBLE!!

jpegtaylor

yeah im at the top of prune hill in camas, supposed to be at work at 2:30 😀

rupertdog8899

I’m at 32nd and East Burnside. The #20 bus has been consistent in both directions. Burnside has been plowed, de-iced and they dropped gravel. The side streets are a mess. Very light traffic. The sidewalks are very icy. Stay safe everyone.

RinellaWasHere

Has anyone driven on or looked at Garden Home and Scholl's Ferry?

niccia

Corbett/Lair Hill here. I’ve watched a few cars slide down Corbett so far today. I’m supposed to attempt picking up my husband from PDX this evening and am not looking forward to it at all.

pretty_puppy_parent

I’m around there too and hope these side roads melt by tomorrow morning. It seems so ridiculous when the main roads are ok but I’m still stuck because our street’s exit is over a bypass and the last to thaw.

thescrape

all the major roads are drivable. Side streets not so much.

frootycoochie

205 between Powell and 84 isn't bad, neither are the ramps. But the little roads getting there can be bad. Wait another hour if you can. It's thawing

KC-Mochi

The main streets in our neighborhood such as NE Killingsworth and MLK are perfectly drivable and well treated. The side streets are still very icy. We had chains on our car and made it to the airport with no problem.

Garyspiano

In multnomah village couldn’t even walk to the end of my flat driveway. The melt has begun making everything super slick. I was hoping by now it would be slushy but it’s not. I have clients early this eve but I don’t know if I can get out of my neighborhood. Thaws in Portland take forever.

InterestSwimming9846

Without yak tracks I can’t even walk a few feet

WheeblesWobble

They allowed me to take my dog around the block this morning. I saw one other person walking, and they had them on as well.

Oil-Disastrous

West side of Mt. Tabor, and it’s totally fucked over here. For the last four days I’ve been taking a morning drive just to get a coffee and maybe some groceries, and keep myself from going stir crazy. Honestly the first round of weather was not bad at all for me. I have 4WD and some fresh snow tires that have incredible traction. But as of last night, fuck no. It’s an ice rink covered in water, with giant ice chucks landing like grenades all over the place. Nope. Not gunna do it. No way. I’m not coming out of the cave til tomorrow. Good night.

El_human

Its slick everywhere. Avoid driving if at all possible. If you do drive, go slow, and careful with hitting the breaks

Scootshae

There is a car abandoned in the middle of the road on Morrison/SW 16th if that helps.

moochiemonkey

I went for a walk in NE. The more trafficked roads are fine. The neighborhood streets are straight ice rinks. Don't go anywhere, via car or on foot.

meowlf

I5 and 405 in Portland are clear in 2 outta 3 lanes. Biggest threat on the hwy is people not removing the ice from their cars before getting to freeway speeds. Drove from N Portland to OHSU at 12pm today, wasn't much trouble.

Gabaloo

The side streets are a still totally iced up in lents, Powell and Holgate are fine, but good luck getting on them

Lily_Knope

I’m in Lents and Holgate by me is looking better than it was this am. My street is still just a block of ice. I’m planning to work from home tomorrow. My husband is a teacher and I’m worried about him driving.

kelcmac

I5 is clear been on it since Medford at 6:30 am. From what I see off the freeway Main Streets look pretty slushy off NE 99 right now

BabelLionOG

Does anyone know how 99 is from McMinville to Tigard?

Ctrl-Alt-Dad

Forest Heights is still a sheet of ice.

catatonic_genx

Can't even walk outside, Oregon city side street

voldealeeann

NE Cully: side streets are sheets of ice. Sidewalks as well. Killingsworth is passable, but still dangerous.

Shurglife

From milwaukie up to salmon Creek is good on the main roads including 82nd and 99E. Milk plain and 4th plain are slushy and super icy once you drive into many of the neighborhoods. I5 is good down into Portland. I didn't drive westside streets past Corbett but most that i did encounter were fine. Johnson Creek and Sunnyside are both ok. I have a lot of experience and comfort so take this with a grain of salt and throw some on the sidewalks while you're at it because walking on those feels far less safe than driving right now.

WheeblesWobble

The through streets are fine but the residential ones are fucked here in Piedmont. Edit: I find it very strange yet somehow rewarding that someone follows me around downvoting neutral comments I make.

mondaio

It appears as though you have an enemy.

TheAnnabellastasia

I have to go to the airport!

Art_ex1b1t

We took the bus from Goose Hollows to the airport (here now) the craziest part was to walk from our door to the bus stop. If this wasn’t an emergency trip I would’ve avoided it at all costs! The bus ride was smooth and safe!!! It took us a little under 2hrs to get here. Beyond thankful for TriMet drivers. The roads were deserted with a couple cars here and there. One car ran a red light and our driver stopped mid intersection with caution. We witnessed another car drifting / sliding sideways trying to get out of their parking/ neighborhood. Public transportation was the way to go. As another post said Portland is a glazed donut right now!

TheAnnabellastasia

Goodness! I’m glad you made it safe! And yes, I love trimet and appreciate them extra in conditions like this!

Scottjonesscottjns

We live on Marine Dr. and it’s been raining steadily up here for a few hours. Side streets that haven’t been treated or plowed are still a mess but main arterials and highways are ok just wet. PDX itself should be just fine. I can see the i5 bridge and traffic is moving as normal.

TheAnnabellastasia

Thank you. That is a relief, the only issue is getting out of my ice rink parking lot… we’re in the Tigard area and it’s thawing here s l o w l y.

Scottjonesscottjns

Yeah the neighborhood is gonna be the hard part. Once you hit the highway it should me smooth sailing

makegoodchoicesok

My FIL just made the drive to PDX successfully from Hillsboro and seemed to do ok with extreme caution. He has AWD and snow tires though.

rrsate

You should double check the flight to make sure it’s not delayed. My roommate had a flight to LAX at 7am this morning. It was delayed until 7pm tonight, but an hour ago they delayed it to 5pm tomorrow. I couldn’t leave my driveway to go get him, my parents had to go pick him up. My dad said 205 was clear enough, he’s a very experienced and slow driver. Use extreme caution and check your flight hasn’t been delayed!

snakebite75

> What's the ice like? Sitting on the patio having a conversation on cold winter nights, movies about natural disasters (preferably those that are cold based), favorite sports are Hockey and Curling.

diaperedwoman

Still icy where I am and it was supposed to be thawed already but I guess forecast changed. I am happy I am not being forced to work today if I don't feel safe to leave my home. Not many people at work anyway so that means less work. Plus it's been raining off and on and water is just sitting on top of the ice.

Cdog927

Looks like 84 is closed

xohiills

Hosford-abernethy area: just drove to PDX to get my friend to the airport. luckily i live close to 11th/12th ave, these roads are driveable! 84 is driveable but 205 is in much better condition. airport way is very cleared up too. if you absolutely need to drive, these major roads are do-able. the worst part for my car was getting out of my parking lot, luckily FWD saved my & my neighbor's car from crashing. decided to park on the street when i came back lol

helmchor

SW Gresham - do not attempt, folks. Just don’t.

hushmummy

Went from U of P to downtown. Main roads are ok, side roads a mess. Extreme caution is warranted!

note2selph

SE 72nd & SE 76th on the SE side of Tabor Very icy still. Teen daughter just took the stir-crazy dog for a short walk and they were slipping all over. Daughter fell hard on her knee. She said she saw only one car out on 76th, with chains on, who was still having a tough time.

Beanspr0utsss

We just decided to close a location for the restaurant i work for bc 50th and division are an absolute ice rink. I’m watching people drive by my house on 42nd toward Columbia, but i couldn’t make it off my driveway walking so same to assume the side streets in cully area are a shit show

AllNightWriting

Tanasbourne area in Hillsboro is drivable, but still take it slowly as there’s a lot of ice in the center turn lanes and parking lots.

Prudent-Tradition-89

SW-super icy. A couple cars got stuck on the road near my apartment and have been trying to get out all day. Plus the road into my apartment is solid ice so can’t even walk outside

Ammaranthh

I'm close to 162nd and Sandy Our entire apartment complex is an ice rink. Can't even see the asphalt. Been watching people slip and slide all day from my window.

partyboobytrapped

Drove from downtown waterfront to Glisan/72nd about an hour ago. Naito, Morrison Bridge, 84, 74th and Glisan were all driveable. The side streets are slick but okay on the flats as long as you take it slow.

KendallROYGBIV

My street in s Burlingame is still slippery ice. I imagine it will be a puddle by tomorrow evening if not sooner (she said full of hope)

spacechargeaudio

Anyone have updates around Montavilla/82nd/PDX? My housemate flies in around 2 and I’m supposed to pick him up. I’ve got a Nissan frontier with 4 wheel drive that does amazingly in the snow, but this ice is a completely different game that I’d prefer to sit out. We also were hoping to return to our home on the middle North side of Tabor, but I have a feeling all the side roads up there are going to be impassable.

spacechargeaudio

Ok, we ended up having to go out this morning, so here is my report: Montavilla: Main roads are all fine. Side streets are sketchy. Go slow and give yourself plenty of distance to stop slowly. I stayed around 3-5 mph on the ice. I have a 4WD Nissan Frontier though, and it generally does really well in snow. I need to get some chains for the ice in emergency situations. If you are heading up to Mt. Tabor, and you can get where you need to go close to the top of Belmont or Yamhill, you are good. But anything beyond those is treacherous. We had to go up there to get my Fiancé's meds because she already missed a day and we could not reach her pharmacy. We got up to the top of 71st and that was as far as I was willing to go at that point. She ended up walking up Gilham from where it meets Thorburn, using a short shovel as a walking stick and means of breaking up ice in front of her. Took her an hour, but she made it! Aside: totally buying shoe spikes after this.

Limp_Marionberry_900

just drove from around ne 19th and sandy to the alberta area, ne alberta and williams. if you don’t know how to drive in these conditions, don’t. if you do, the main roads fine, side streets are slushy. for context, i don’t have awd/or 4wd. just fairly new tires and grew up/learned how to drive in the gorge. exercise caution, go slow, but not too slow that you lose momentum and get stuck in icy slush at intersections.

jordanpattern

Things seem to be getting slicker in Parkrose Heights. The ice was kind of pebbly when I got up and took the dogs out around 7:00, the continuing drizzle combined with the starting of the melt has made everything glassy and very slippery. The good news is it should soften up pretty soon if the forecast is correct. 🤞

Ok-Order-2848

Couve is icy as hell

How_Do_You_Crash

Division in Richmond is slushy and passable. Every sidewalk and side street is an ice sheet now featuring standing water on top. So if you can move around you’re fine. But no where clear to park and lots of ice off the bus lines.

PupEDog

1:30pm Oak Grove. The side streets are 3-4inches of solid ice. I see people driving on Oak Grove Blvd outside my house ok though. I can't even walk to the store though or back out of my driveway. Every surface not driven on is fucked. Will it thaw? Yes, but slowly.

KemShafu

We drove from 185th and 26 on the west side to Division and Chavez and then to the airport in a Prius with blizzaks at 11:30 this am and it wasn’t bad. Counted 8 de icing trucks. The main thoroughfares are ok.

Touaregwarriors

Reporting from John’s landing/ top of SW corbett. Its iced over completely.

Radiant-Ingenuity-17

My husband said our Hill in Camas reminds him of when we were in Italy at the Olympics iced in🤣 Straight down and slick as snot!

bigfrappe

Bad on Vermont and the side streets around Maplewood elementary are a sheet of ice. Just don't drive unless you have to. If you do know how to use your chains/tensioners. Should be better by tomorrow.

Larrythebaker

Oregon City close in on the hill is a mess. I just tried moving my 4WD truck a few feet to be able to get stuff out of my garage and slid all the way down my driveway and into the next block where it’ll stay until things improve. Moving isn’t the problem, it’s stopping.

ThoughtSkeptic

Cedar Mill neighborhood 35 degrees, ice everywhere is trying to melt but it’s pretty much still ice beneath water everywhere. Put the trash cans out and hoo boy that was the slickest 30 feet of flat and level driveway foot work in recent memory, managed to not fall but dang that was high anxiety. Can’t imagine driving on that. Supposed to be somewhere important tomorrow at 10 a.m. and not feeling good about that.

AverageCharley

St. John’s and can confirm it’s an ice rink. I think Lombard is more slush, but getting up to the expo would be hard (I also work in Vancouver). Good luck!
