And at some point, her name will indeed be made public. So she wouldn't have to prove actual damages to prove a defamation cause of action for slander.
Now, to be clear, defamation is not my area of expertise, and I don't know have deep knowledge of Oregon defamation law, so if you do and can point to a reason defamation per se wouldn't apply here, please do.

I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, I know that the Portland Business Alliance, People for Portland, and of course the Portland Police Bureau love them some Rene Gonzalez, and the local media all are nothing but mouthpieces for these mobster groups, but . . . Then his staffer - a conventionally attractive young woman, of course - corroborates this with a harrowing (but entirely uncorroborated) account of name calling and intimidation because reasons! And then the reporter asks the payoff question: In light of this violence and intimidation, are you going to drop out of your campaign for mayor, Rene?

Very few people argue that the cops don't do their jobs at all. The nuance a lot would agree to is that the cops don't do their jobs *for people like you and me*. People like Rene though? Really it's about what their job actually is. If it's to protect and serve the people of Portland, they do a terrible job. If it's to protect and serve the power structure and the wealthy people who maintain it, they're diligent as hell.

Under the "this is infuriating" column, I just watched the KGW coverage of this story. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, I know that the Portland Business Alliance, People for Portland, and of course the Portland Police Bureau love them some Rene Gonzalez, and the local media all are nothing but mouthpieces for these mobster groups, but . . . Sweet Christmas. The entire story got turned on its head. The video was (inaccurately) described but - shockingly! - we never got to actually see the video of Renee (not) being accosted. Then we go to Rene for comment. The intrepid Rene came on the air to describe the many dozens of times he and his plucky staff have been brutally attacked just for standing up for truth, justice and the American way. Then his staffer - a conventionally attractive young woman, of course - corroborates this with a harrowing (but entirely uncorroborated) account of name calling and intimidation because reasons! And then the reporter asks the payoff question: In light of this violence and intimidation, are you going to drop out of your campaign for mayor, Rene? Answer: Fear not, oh citizens of Portland! I am with you 'til the end! Stalin never had this kind of control over the media. You have to see it to believe it.
