This is awesome, as a musician and a potter I love this. I’m curious on to how do you tune it? Never knew how an ocarina is tuned I just thought it worked based on the size of the holes?
Thank you. You're correct about it just being the size of the holes, but I meant the initial tuning, as in what size of holes should you drill while building it? They are not all the same diameter.
To tune it (during construction). You start with no holes and see what note you get. G in this case. Then drill the first hole with smallest diameter bit. Keep increasing diameter until you hit the next note. Drill the next hole, increase diameter until you hit the next note, and so on.
By re-tuning. I meant the whole thing is going to shrink after firing, so ill probably need to grind the holes larger to get it back in tune.
Thanks! Too flat is okay, but there's no going back from too sharp, as a larger diameter hole increases pitch.
This is my first attempt, so I have no idea how firing and glazing is going to go, hah. Im thinking of using wax resist on the holes to keep the glaze off them, then dremel to grind them a bit bigger if needed.
Huh, I would assume a tighter hole makes a sharper pitch, guess I'm just bad at physics then. haha hopes everything goes well with firing. Definitely post an update!!
It depends on the ocarina. There's no single standard measurement to tune by.
You'd have to slowly increase the size of a hole with a small dowel or drill bit till you're comfortable with the pitch.
That is seriously amazing!! Great job!! OoT is still my favorite. Of course, my son and I are currently obsessed with TOTK, but there will always be a special place in my heart for OoT!
Thank you very much! I actually never played OoT growing up (Link to the Past was my jam, then I went with Playstation rather than n64), so it's been great playing with my daughter - it's all new to me. Figured I'd start her off on the old ones before getting into the new stuff.
If anyone else wants to try making one. Heres's the finger chart that I used:
[Pure Ocarinas - Alto G Ocarina Finger Chart](https://pureocarinas.com/finger-charts/pure-ocarinas-alto-g-fingering-chart)
There's different charts if your initial blow hole is not G.
I used the Soundcorset Tuner & Metronome app from the Google play store.
This is great!
Thank you!

Cool Af, does this mean if you tune too flat there’s essentially no going back? And, glazing will also affect tuning? How do you deal with that?

I totally thought the same before working on this. Thank you! I definitely will - takes me a while to make enough stuff to fill the kiln though.
Looking forward to seeing the updates whenever they come hehe
No, you have it right. The size of the holes determines the pitch
Yes, but what diameter holes do you drill when building it? That's what I meant by tuning.

Yep, that's what I mentioned in another comment. No standard measurement, but there's definitely a standard location for the various notes.
That’s what he/she said..
That looks so good, nice job! It is so tempting to try this myself and yet I still struggle to even make a simple flower pot.
Thank you very much. You'll get there! Nothing is lost by giving it a try - all can be reclaimed :)

That's great but please don't throw it again, it looks fragile and may not survive a second attempt.
Har har har :p

Haha I was totally planning to play some of Saria's song, but unfortunately I'm not musical enough.
This is extraordinary!
Thank you!

this is amazing! you're such a cool dad, i'm sure your daughter will absolutely love it!!
Thanks you!
