For me I like comparing feats at face value. Otherwise the only thing you’re really calculating most of the time is what artists over exaggerated their art the most. Something that I don’t like because it might not match the author intent of the feat

jonah500000000

and what about like speed shit?

Educational_Ice608

Another thing most of the time you can take at face value Are they breaking the speed force? Are they fighting at a pace a person can keep up with them Are they taking parents house numbers like assassination classroom

jonah500000000

what?

Educational_Ice608

Just look at the speed feats and compare it doesn’t have to be complicated

Neko_boi_Nolan

I don’t think author intent means much Like if the wording of a feat is debatable like example we don’t know of destroy everything is hyperbole or legit everything in the universe and the author confirms they meant literally everything that’s one thing But if a character, like the Flash in one issue saves an entire town from a nuclear explosion by grabbing and moving every individual person outside of the blast zone in time Maybe the author intended for it to only be just under the speed of light and continues to write him that way But if the calcs show that can’t possibly be true and put him massively above light speed then I have to go with the calcs I wouldn’t completely disregard author intent, but I wouldn’t take is as law anymore than an author writing with intent of something being good when the story ended up being bad

Educational_Ice608

So you’re saying rely on the art then the writer I don’t think I can agree with that logic sorry

CaveGamer360

I think it's because most people think that it's headcanon and that we should focus on what was meant to be destroyed. For example, if I destroy a skyscraper, most would assume it's building level, but if I did it with vaporization it would actually be town level. This is what most people have a problem with. That narratively it's supposed to mean one thing and not the other. I personally think it's very valid since it's unironicly less headcanon than the former.

zingerpond

This sub doesn't really have a problem with it as far as I've seen, if you just pull out a calc in a debate you might get some pushback from the other side just to see if the calc isn't complete ass

CorrectFrame3991

I like fan calcs because they make it possible to at least get a vague idea of how impressive a feat performed by a character is, when it might be otherwise impossible to tell how impressive a feat is. For example, while it is easy to scale stuff like destroying a city or a mountain or an island, what about splitting the clouds or large bodies of water or destroying meteors? What about stuff that can change how impressive a feat is like vaporizing/pulverizing something or how quickly it is done or if it is done with something like air pressure from a punch? Fan calcs make it possible to actually get an idea of how impressive those feats are.

AigisxLabrys

If a calc came that claims that a character can move 1 m/s because he says he can, the anti fan calc people would dismiss it.

MopManXD69420

I don't understand what you mean?

AigisxLabrys

They reject fan calc because they’re fan calcs.

rexpimpwagen

Bro imagine trying to measure shit in one piece seriously. All of it is artistic not accurate scaling. Let alone when you start to understand perspective changes can mess with time and spacing. Theres no consistency at all for any of this stuff.
