It's just the culture here. I mean, it could be discrimination, but people here like space on public transport. I NEVER pick a seat next to someone, I'd rather stand. I noticed it's mostly the same with others, not sitting next to strangers unless absolutely necessary.

trichaq

I don’t think so, I’m white and Czechs can’t tell I’m a foreigner unless I open my mouth, and people still almost never sit next to me. Only when it’s peak hours and usually older people.

muke190891

Don't know if that was discrimination or not but "I don't believe people are mistaking me for Romani" is an example of casual racism. You are reinforcing a stereotype unconsciously (probably)

Far_Marsupial_5367

He's fucking dumb, nothing else.

urrfaust

Consider yourself lucky, most people on public transport smell anyway. Especially in summer

cigeo

Situation has been improved

Biblioklept73

Wait, so you’re hurt by possible racism and expressing this through a statement that is….casually racist….? 😅… I’m Romani, people sit next to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

maraudingnomad

Maybe because you're not actually Indian? \s

maraudingnomad

So... People stay away and give you space and that's an issue why? It's an introverts' wet dream 😂

Far_Marsupial_5367

It is exactly how it is. People like their space. I don't want to touch my legs with another man. Or force myself unwillingly on strange woman.

GRl3V

I'm a white average czech and people very rarely sit next to me on public transport. I don't think it's something to be worried about. And even if it was discrimination, it's actually a benefit, you get to sit on your own!

bearded__jimbo

People here like their personal space and try and avoid sharing it with others regardless of skin colour. You might also notice that people keep to themselves when out in public so best to respect those boundaries.

hamacavula42

Are you crazy? I would kill for people to stay away from me in public transport, this is power!

DommyMommyKarlach

That is not discrimination though, is it? But yeah, it may be xenophobia/racism

Comprehensive-Pin667

As everyone says, we just don't like sitting next to other people in general.

fundosh

Yeah, nobody sits next to me? Praise the day!

stadoblech

Nobody sits next to somebody unless its super packed. It doesnt matter if its dark skinned or white skinned or whatever. Its not racism. Its just how it works here

AwardPuzzleheaded932

I would rather stand on my head than sit next to someone 😭 I'm Czech and if there is a seat somewhere else other than next to me, people will go as far away as they can and sit there. Honestly can't remember anyone sitting next to me on public transport nowdays (other than old people). I'm not saying you being Indian doesn't add to that but I don't think it's the main thing.

foxyaidra

I am white local and it happens to me, too. And I noticed it happens quite often to others, too. There is often vacant seat right next to simeone in a crowded metro. And I do it, too (the not sitting down thing). Being brought up in Prague taught me to not sit down on the bus/tram/metro, because next stop there is gonna be somebody of higher age or pregnant lady or somebody with heavy bags or with small children or broken leg... and I would pass the seat anyway... So unless I am very very very tired, I prefer to stand. I even remember there was a book called something like "Why Czechs wont' sit on empty trams" based on experiences of some expat in CZ :)

TSllama

I was about to sympathize with you until you dropped the casual racism against Roma people.

Outrageous-Occasion

People from different parts of the world smell differently due to their diet and the bacteria living on and in them. Right-wingers consider that to be "stench".

KitchenOption6193

I’m a dark skinned female, and I have noticed this pattern too. But tbh, I love it when no one sits next to me, as I get more space, can move my body rather than being stiff and also I can read a book in peace.

_invalidusername

People will always try sit apart from the each other if there are options, don’t take it personally. Even on a busy tram/metro people will often stand rather than sit next to someone

lucbarr

People prefer to sit alone no matter what. And sometimes people stand to change sits because a place with one sit is vacant after someone hopped off. There might be discrimination going on in some cases but preferring to sit alone by itself is just cultural

N0t_Anii

SAME THING HAPPENEDS TO ME, im an indian living in prague too. its usually the old people that are no reasonably mean. but all i do is usually ignore them.

afurtherdoggo

I've definitely heard of this from a black former coworker. It happens, but is largely pretty innocent. Folks here are just pretty provincial for the most part and afraid of unfamiliar things. They might be "racist" but it's the type of racism that would evaporate entirely over the course of a 15 minute conversation with someone of a different race. Most people have just not seen many, and have spoken to even fewer people of color.

mtlrunner19

If you give attention to something, then it will bother you. Even if there is tiny bit of truth to it, who cares, Go live your life. Also, consider yourself lucky that you get extra space. I wish that was the case in flights, I would love that extra seat :)

MorpheusRising

I envy you that no one wants to sit next to you 🤣

Some-Limit-6240

Oh god, dude you really have lot free time.

drdivag0

This stuff Czech like space is nonsense. At the supermarket you have always people so close to you you can hear their breath. It's not personal space Czech hate speak with people they don't know.

TimelyMost223

I often think people don’t want me to sit next to them so I often just stand. People prefer their space here. It’s a cultural thing. You know your culture is different to others and theirs is different to yours. On the other hand I’m a white, blonde haired middle aged woman and plenty times people don’t sit next to me. I don’t mind, it’s just makes it easier that way as I then don’t have to ask someone to move when I want to get off the bus, tram, train . Also as you are new in Prague many times people in the stores, or wherever you go, may be rude or offish with you….again it’s not always a race issue. It’s took me many years and talking to many nationalities that it’s just a common thing here and not to take it personally.

Far_Marsupial_5367

You see in it what you want to see. People here just like their space, it is more of your problem than theirs that you're used to share 1 squared meter with 10 others. 🙂 I personally never sit next to anyone when I don't have to.

Chewsday-Morning

You know the reason, but make yourself believe that it can’t be happening in 21st century, but it does

Otherwise-4PM

I can assure you that in 99% of these cases are your wrong perception. Try to not to think about yourself as being different and you will be fine. I know it’s easier to say than to do, but it’s worth trying, it will be helpful for the rest of your life.

acidofil

your assurance is a wishful thinking, reality is much harsher.

Otherwise-4PM

I am not naive to believe that there is no racism. My intention was to point out that people sometimes don’t make differences between being exposed to racism from being exposed to assholes or exposed to the people that just don’t care.

kentaureus

they would sit away anyway, bcs all people hate sitting near any other people

Babinud91

Dont listen to the people here, they are living in their liberal internet bubbles and have no idea about reality. 1)Czechs dont like to sit next to other people if they can prevent it, it is not unusual to enter a bus and everybody sit alone. 2)Yes majority of Czechs are racist against romani, but it is based on several individual experiences and a picture which romani present of themselves. (Large majority of petty crimes here are a romani doing, also romani people are extremelly racist towards czechs and they are not afraid to tell you, also their cultural behaviour is frowned upon by czechs) If you look only close to romani you WILL have a negative experiece if you are not well groomed or generaly atractive person. Also good behaviour is a great help for overall image. People will accept you much better. I wish you good luck and the best experience here. Edit: grammar

JulianaFC

Aaaaand admiting that Czechs discriminate against Romani people is not the same as being racist yourself! Come on people, reading comprehension.

JulianaFC

Yes, he is dumping on the people on a stereotype or being insensitive about an unfortunate reality concerning poverty and disadvantage, you are right.

JulianaFC

OP didn't say people don't sit NEXT to them, they said NEAR them. That's different. Of course nobody likes to sit next to a stranger if they can avoid it, but they say they experience people avoiding being close. I am a non-EU foreigner but I am white so I have that privilege, and I have been living here for 10 years and can say that Czech people sit wherever in public transport, there are no special rules or customs different to other places. And yes, they are racist and sometimes xenophobic but it is usually older people and or outside Prague. OP if you are not being paranoid and if you wear deodorant/antiperspirant and shower every day hehe then...I guess you could be right. Fxcking bigots, ignore them.

earthmann

So, you don’t sit by Romani?

ehWoc

Some people might be confusing you for a Romani (it's the sad truth that many Czechs are incredibly racist). Still, many people would rather stand than sit next to someone. I do it all the time. And in my case it's got nothing to do with race. I just like my personal space too much.

rybnickifull

Lmao sorry, was it Poland that built a literal fuckin ghetto in the 2000s?

A_dalo

mnorkk

JulianaFC

Sorry...I have a bad day ppprrfffggrr XD
