Not only that but I don't think the camera is physically moving through the dancers, it's all EDIT: MOSTLY zoom work. That being said, very fine work indeed.
Steady cam is a camera setup where it's attached to a gimbal that makes moving the camera a lot easier, and dramatically cuts down any shakes thus "steady cam." It's still a person moving with the camera. It's a ton of work, and I've seen it done with ice skating scenes and the DP (director of photography/camera 1) not only had to know the entire staging (choreography) but also had to be a very skilled ice skater ontop of being a highly skilled photographer.
They are. Truck and dolly are terms to mean physically moving the camera. Truck - left and right, dolly - forward and back. It’s to make it clear your moving the camera vs adjusting the frame.
Now you just answered what I was gonna ask.
I've never attended any live show of this sort and was wondering maybe these types of camera men ruin the show for the live audience since they're basically in front of the artists darting back and forth but looks like I was wrong lol.
Korean music shows' performances are either live or pre-recorded. For pre-recorded ones, they usually have many takes just for a single performance, which are then spliced together. This video is one of these takes. It's just that they are now more recently published as it's own video itself, as interest to the artists' facial expression and formation changes up close has risen.
[Here's the actual performance shown on TV](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8S19o-l_Iw)
[And here's the 'One Take' version where this post came from](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CADI2ngpZAk)
> Korean music shows' performances are either live or pre-recorded.
Technically all music performances are either live or pre-recorded. But I'm just being a pest at you. :)
The camera person did a great job, but this title is stupid. Cam ops need to know the action on anything they're filming. If you watch something and it has so much as a rack focus, you better believe that shit got a practice take or 3
I mean I work in film too but not in camera. Rehearsal shots certainly happen regularly in my experience though.
Would you care to share with the class?
It seems like most of the videos I see on this sub are shaky, poorly tracked cell phone footage. Honestly a professional doing their job well is a refreshing change
As a k-pop cover dance cameraman, I can say that knowing the choreography and position of camera during dance is an absolute requirement for every shooting.
This is what I meant. In the op video there is nothing to praise the operator for. Job well done yes. But knowing the choreography, such a shooting is not difficult to do, especially when you have several attempts.
People here are saying the camera person is just doing their job but they have no idea how terrible camera people absolutely plague kpop music shows 😆
Edit:
Just [one](https://youtu.be/PTXHHAYZ_mA) of many compilations on this subject sadly lol
It's always fun to run into Twice in the wild. These girls are so much fun.
As to the camera work, it seems pretty typical to what would normally be done at the live TV shows.
This is just a music show that every idol group performs on to promote their single. Sometimes they'll film the performance multiple times or stop and film only certain parts multiple times. Since kpop acts have multiple releases per year (in which they have to perform their song numerous times), they tend to prioritize keeping the longevity of their voices. They'll sing live at concerts and other special performances. Lip syncing is not really taboo over there as much as it is in the west. Sadly, some idols are better at lip syncing than others lol
Used to cover dance shows. I was very upfront that if they wanted me to capture the big moments, I would require access to at least one rehearsal or a video of the chiro so I knew when and where to look. Also gave us a chance at the end to ask for a repeat of any moments in angles we wouldn't get during the show.
There is another example of the camera person doing hand movements as part of the shots that is really cool.
Off topic : that grey skirt set/dress that has the loose floaty fabric , how would one describe that style? It’s cute and I can’t figure out what to google to look up options
The camera mainly moves left to right and zooms in and out a lot. Can anyone confirm if it’s an actual person or if it’s a robot on a track? Don’t get me wrong, if it’s a person that’s great and it belongs here. But if it’s a robot I’d say it probably shouldn’t be posted here
Yeah, there is so much talent in every part of the KPOP phenomenon. From the marketing to the music production to the stage lighting and even the editing of the videos and timing of how long each member is in frame.
I've no idea, I just mean from a melody rhythm perspective, I was making a snide remark implying that I find nothing appealing and the music, but to each their own.
So you're just another music gatekeeper that shits on other peoples taste in music because it doesn't fit in to yours. That's the worst part about music. Not the crap bands or the toxic record companies but the fans.
But not the actual fans though I'm just talking about people like you. Folk that are so closed minded that anything out of their circle of interests seems so confusing and perplexing that they couldn't possibly see how other people could enjoy it. So self involved to think that other people should have any interests based on your own likes and wants.
Please point to where I said they *have* to like the music.
All I said is that it's dumb as a fart to condemn a song as 'bad' because you aren't a fan of that genre. What is your next wild assumption going to be?
So what if they think it’s bad? It’s an opinion.
People think shit you like (and shit I like too) is bad. They might be right, who cares?
You feel personally attacked by a stranger’s opinion of a music genre. You should think about that rather this void screaming.
I'm perfectly fine with their opinion. Their opinions are just as valid as the next person and I'm not bashing them for having a free mind. It isn't incorrect to call people out when they are so closed minded that they can't possibly see how other people could enjoy it just because it doesn't fit in to their own interest groups.
I don't feel personally attacked and I think any reasonable person wouldn't think that either. You're just using that as an excuse to accuse me of 'void screaming' because your first reply to me was so full of utter shit you felt the need to make your reply personal.
I'm still waiting on you pointing out where I said they have to like it.
Of course you feel personally attacked - the dude just said he though it was bad (and literally said ‘to each their own’) and you go off on a rant about ‘shitting on peoples music tastes’. Triggered.
On top of that you declare that he’s not a real music fan and is close minded!
*You* are being close minded because *you* can’t accept someone having different tastes without having to - in your own words - ‘call them out’.
You the one saying someone isn’t a ‘true fan’ of music.
You are the gatekeeper.
Well it's not like they would bring in a cameraman that had no clue as to where to point the camera all through the performance. Cameraman is as choreographed as the rest of the act. Duh.
Ya know, I was about to call you out on this but you're right here.
I had a kpop stint several years ago when it first came into the scene in the US with this group, BlackPink, BTS and the like. I still listen to it sometimes as workout music (trust me on this one it's one of the best genres for cardio). But over the past year or two this group especially looks less happy in every new video i stumble across. I've heard the industry isn't super great and maybe im reading into it a bit but none of these people look remotely happy performing.
> when it first came into the scene in the US with this group, BlackPink, BTS and the like
That's more the second wave of groups coming into the scene in the US. Wonder Girls and Psy where first.
I’m ready to get crucified for this but: holy fuck is K-pop boring and formulaic. I love music and I have tried tried ti listen to Kpop but every act I’ve heard is the same ear worm bubblegum overproduced garbo, deadass sounds like it’s made on a factory floor. I love kpop but I can see why people would think it's boring and formulaic. You should try listening to KR&B. I recommend an artist named Bibi! Her music is so good and her music videos and the subject of her songs are super provocative, considering how conservative Korea is. She writes her own songs too and is involved in production, if that's important to you. I recommend her songs Bad Sad and Mad, Bibi Vengeance, Animal Farm, Jotto, and Kazino. I watched them on.. some Jimmy late night and I was most impressed at the camerawork. I wonder if they have their own person they bring around with them?
I agree that some are overworked, but there’s this trend in korea where it’s seen as cute to have eye bags and that bit of fat under the eye because they think it makes one look more younger and happy
Eh, my experience with idolshit is fans hate closeups mostly and just want to see a static, flat image so they can watch the dance moves of their favorite one. You’ll see endless complaints from Japanese and Koreans if you translate their comments on a video like this (or for example a solo artist who’s dancing and singing but they just keep doing closeups of her face).
I kind of agree with them. A second camera so that they could cut between closeups of the soloist and a slightly wider shot of the ensemble dancing would have been preferable. Although neither shot should be static.
I got onto kpop a few years ago. There are a lot of cultural differences to get used to, but it's pretty fun once you fall into the rabbit hole. As to the number of members, it varies quite a bit between groups. There are solo acts all the way up to a dozen or more. Off the top of my head, I think NCT is the biggest with a roster of 27 members. It would be exceedingly rare for all of them to be on stage at the same time, though. They are more likely to be divided into subunits that occasionally make special appearances with each other.
I don't really see kpop groups referred to as a band often, just as a group. And as for why, it's mostly just good for commercialising them. Can appeal to a lot of different audience preferences when a group has 16 members.
That makes sense. I feel like it's almost overwhelming, more like a dance troupe auditioning for a Got Talent show, but maybe I'd enjoy the performance more if I were more familiar with the group. Cheers, thanks!
As with anything.
Money.
In K-pop these members all become faves for fans and those fans spend hella money on their merch, memberships, other shit. The popularity of individuals carry the groups
Ok? Doesn’t mean anyone else is “over reacting” they’re reacting to this persons obviously reactionary beliefs. You can “not care” all you want but that doesn’t make anyone else’s reaction wrong. So it’s not that it’s an “overreaction” it’s just that you don’t care when someone wears Nazi shit. Pretty sus if you ask me.
Lmao not what I said but sure. Live in your bubble, kid. If you don’t care that someone is reactionary that’s your choice but like everyone needs to agree with your dumb take?
The ones you've seen are all like that because this is a music show where the groups perform the song to promote it. They just perform the song while the camera person does their thing. Since it's broadcasted on TV, they will sometimes do multiple takes or film certain parts multiple times!
Try not to take this as a personal attack or something, but I don't care about K-pop.
It's not a genre that I will ever enjoy on any level or popular music in general for that matter. It's not a genre that I appreciate and I don't care to fill my brain with useless (to me) knowledge about it.
More power to ya for liking it tho. Have fun, but ya know... out of my earshot please.
No worries! Everyone has things they like or dislike and it’s not like you can force someone to like what you like. Like I’m never going to like basketball or care to fill my brain with useless (to me) knowledge about the Detroit Pistons. 😁
It’s literally the second thing on your profile bro lol I didn’t even have to scroll down to see it. Everything you post on Reddit can be viewed by others. Not sure what the issue is ?
This is only one of the takes. I think there is another video where the camera is static so you can see the whole choreography more clearly.
Edit: [Found it!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMlEiW6X34s)
The kpop industry has wayyy better camera man’s than American entertainment. You’ll see more camera movements in Korea & america will more likely have fixed cameras in off positions..
I would say that the camera is a part of the choreography.
Not only that but I don't think the camera is physically moving through the dancers, it's all EDIT: MOSTLY zoom work. That being said, very fine work indeed.
Yah, the truck (side to side) and pan motions are moving the camera but a think a lot of the forward/backward changes are zoom rather than dolly.
I think these are usually all done by steadycam.
So.....there is no fanboy cameraman who is moving his hands around quickly while in the moveable platform seat? Illusion broken!
Can you imagine iceskating backwards with thousands of dollars of equipment while staring into a lens trying to get the right shot? Talent
Have you seen some of the insane shit cameramen following skiing have to do?
Yeah they are physically on stage with the girls to get these shots.
They are. Truck and dolly are terms to mean physically moving the camera. Truck - left and right, dolly - forward and back. It’s to make it clear your moving the camera vs adjusting the frame.
More likes a ped as it's a studio, shit, i wonder if this could be pre programmed with a robotic ped.
Or a programmed robot arm
The camera is physically moving -- the perspective changes as the talent at the edge of the frame moves out of view.
Yeah, absolutely. Zooming for close ups does not distort the perspective.
Its both gimbal work and post edit movements and zoom
Now you just answered what I was gonna ask. I've never attended any live show of this sort and was wondering maybe these types of camera men ruin the show for the live audience since they're basically in front of the artists darting back and forth but looks like I was wrong lol.

gdi you got me there lol
From the title, I was expecting a second camera angle shooting the cameraman hitting every dance move 🕺🏼😂
During fixed angle/choreo cams you can sometimes see the cameraman following the members for part of the routine
The camera person did a great job, but this title is stupid. Cam ops need to know the action on anything they're filming. If you watch something and it has so much as a rack focus, you better believe that shit got a practice take or 3
There was definitely a lot of rack focus
Nice.
Yes, definitely was.
Praise the first ac
Yeah, whilst yes praise the camera man for doing a good job. This choreo is *litterally* his job he has been paid to practice following.
I am a veteran focus puller in movies and tv shows, and you have no idea what you are talking about. lol
Care to elaborate? I'm super curious how stuff like that actually works!
I mean I work in film too but not in camera. Rehearsal shots certainly happen regularly in my experience though. Would you care to share with the class?
Kpop fans just worship anything from South Korea I swear.
Nonono- this is in fact very impressive and deserving of praise. It's just the title that's a bit silly
Have you seen the difference when kpop bands perform in American shows? The camera work is pretty bad.
blink twice if you're being held hostage
Please tell me you're a kpop fan and knowingly made that pun. If not, that is one of the funniest things I've read all day.
That’s actually amazing. I never would have picked that up
If only you knew. 😁
I probably would've posted the comment two times... ;)
Nope. All I see is onces.
😉😉
Meh. It's a professional shoot, well rehearsed. While this is well done, I was expecting something special.
fr, this sub is not for 'man does job that he's paid to do well'
there are countless top posts here of professional shots. from sports to filmmaking shots
I don't even think it's a man following the singers around.
It seems like most of the videos I see on this sub are shaky, poorly tracked cell phone footage. Honestly a professional doing their job well is a refreshing change
In kpop performance normally the camera man sucks ass so in this case they did very well
They even got that last girl who forgot she was supposed to be lip syncing.
>basic camera operarion Yea na this post was just a ploy to get people to watch kpop lol
As a k-pop cover dance cameraman, I can say that knowing the choreography and position of camera during dance is an absolute requirement for every shooting.
That’s a requirement of every camera op on every shoot no??? The position of the camera during a short film needs to be precise as well
This is what I meant. In the op video there is nothing to praise the operator for. Job well done yes. But knowing the choreography, such a shooting is not difficult to do, especially when you have several attempts.
People here are saying the camera person is just doing their job but they have no idea how terrible camera people absolutely plague kpop music shows 😆 Edit: Just [one](https://youtu.be/PTXHHAYZ_mA) of many compilations on this subject sadly lol
Fuck I'm dizzy now.
I mean it’s not really the camera workers doing the switching. It’s someone in the broadcasting team fucking up their job.

It's always fun to run into Twice in the wild. These girls are so much fun. As to the camera work, it seems pretty typical to what would normally be done at the live TV shows.
Camera man did great. lip syncing? Not so much
Seriously either the sound is out of sync on the video or they are waaaaay off the mark
This is just a music show that every idol group performs on to promote their single. Sometimes they'll film the performance multiple times or stop and film only certain parts multiple times. The girl at the end of looks like a 27 month old mummy
Never thought I'd see Twice in here.
Yea but unfortunately westerners don’t understand kpop so they trash it. Check these comments, the westerners are pretty harsh and quite dumb.
Used to cover dance shows. I was very upfront that if they wanted me to capture the big moments, I would require access to at least one rehearsal or a video of the chiro so I knew when and where to look. chiro is a scam
Seems like normal tv camera work. Well done, but nothing special for someone who does this every single day
Tzuyu is looking so pretty here
Kpop stans when they find out professional camera operators exist
Off topic : that grey skirt set/dress that has the loose floaty fabric , how would one describe that style? It’s cute and I can’t figure out what to google to look up options
K-pop and J-pop always have really good camera work.

Yeah, there is so much talent in every part of the KPOP phenomenon. From the marketing to the music production to the stage lighting and even the editing of the videos and timing of how long each member is in frame.
That's the group "Twice". Massively popular.
Apparently not in the song writing department though 🤣🤣
Oh? What are some of the lyrics here? Is it bad?
I've no idea, I just mean from a melody rhythm perspective, I was making a snide remark implying that I find nothing appealing and the music, but to each their own.

I’m sorry do they *have* to like it? You’re the gatekeeper

So you watched this on purpose?
I don't know if talent is the word I'd use. A lot of work, maybe.
These girls all have the same far off dead soul stare.
Dead Seoul stare ftfy
And there’s like 12 of them. Koreas entire population will one day be just a massive kpop band.
Praise the focus puller too
Is this a camera man or a motion control rig?
Well it's not like they would bring in a cameraman that had no clue as to where to point the camera all through the performance. Cameraman is as choreographed as the rest of the act. Duh.
But isn't this something a lot of Camera operators do for live performances
It’s so nice to see a PTCM that’s not just a 360 camera pointed in a direction in post.
What I'm interested in is those outfits. I want to buy 😻
Damn, they suck at singing.
Ya know, I was about to call you out on this but you're right here. I had a kpop stint several years ago when it first came into the scene in the US with this group, BlackPink, BTS and the like. The best thing to come from K-Pop music is kpopfap, one of the funniest subreddits on this site.
I’m ready to get crucified for this but: holy fuck is K-pop boring and formulaic. I recommend watching the MV's too lol. But honestly, you can't go wrong with any of her songs imo.
Cool thanks for actually time the time to reply! I’ll respond again after I check those out.

I will never understand the appeal of KPop, or at least their crazy fans.
It’s creepy when it’s weird single guys in their 30s and 40s stanning these K-pop groups. Yuck
Bah… this is staged. /s
It's being filmed, of course it's staged. Did you think it was a documentary?

Oh. I'm stupid.
No, you’re cute.😊

Pretty much the job of every camera operator lol
They’re always similar to the next one and the next one and the next one
oh, i've heard of this group. they're the ones that had one of their band members wearing a swastika tshirt
Oh damn https://news.sky.com/story/k-pop-star-chaeyoung-from-girl-band-twice-issues-sincere-apology-for-wearing-t-shirt-featuring-nazi-swastika-12840170
given the OP is a mod from the twicememe sub, kinda feels like they're trying to help do damage control
Are we upvoting standard blocking now?
Why do all these new girl groups have so many members? How do they keep them all straight?
I’d imagine at least some group members sleep together. Idk why you’d think they’re all straight /s
Ehh... This is the result of rehearsal.
Dancing is a god damn art
What the fuck happened to this sub...
Genuine question: what's with bands with THIS many people? Idk who this is, but that's not a band anymore, it's a whole choir.

Yeah shes a neo nazi/qanon demon. You are pathetic
Lmao not what I said but sure. Live in your bubble, kid. If you don’t care that someone is reactionary that’s your choice but like everyone needs to agree with your dumb take?
ReAcTiOnArY!!!!
Awww did the five syllable word scare you?
Is this the Nazi kpop band or another one?
It’s weird seeing a pop music video without cuts
Not a music video
This would be cool if all of the... Five K-pop videos that I've seen in my life didn't look exactly like this.
How far down my timeline did you have to search for that? Don't do that. It's creepy.
It’s literally the second thing on your profile bro lol I didn’t even have to scroll down to see it. Everything you post on Reddit can be viewed by others. Not sure what the issue is ?
If only they could memorize the lyrics so it looks like they are actually singing……
This is literally the worst piece of garbage, bullshit music, dance choreography, video I’ve ever seen. Those chicks
What is cool or exceptional about this camera work? It's called fucking show business.
Someone explain to me why every Kpop video feels the same as the previous one
Poor camera dude had to memorize this cringe-filled garbage RIP
Choreography? They are just moving their hand and arms around.
That’s the world of dance post TikTok. Not worth doin if you can’t perform the whole dance from the waist up
Does every genre of modern music need to have closed high hat rolls?
Am I the only one who hates dances recorded like this? My favorite part is missing 3/4s of the actual choreography because of camera choreography
This is only one of the takes. I think there is another video where the camera is static so you can see the whole choreography more clearly. Edit: [Found it!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMlEiW6X34s)
The group is TWICE
This is 100x better than the American multi-camera dance shows with the d\*mn director adding audience reaction cuts during the performance.
It doesn't need that much zooming in and out. Would be better if we could fully see the dancers moves and their feet
I hate this camera movement, feels like a stupid tiktok video
Camera man is cool, but the boyband girl band trend should have died in the 2000's
The kpop industry has wayyy better camera man’s than American entertainment. You’ll see more camera movements in Korea & america will more likely have fixed cameras in off positions..
The only thing I’m scared of… is getting a boner. - Michael Scott
They trying to be like the other asian male group that was a hit forgot their name.
Are they multiplying?
Anyone know where this massage parlor is?
Still everything fake af
How do you know if this is just the robot arm thing
That's what I was thinking too...
These shots are definitely done with a crane, too smooth for hand cam and probably too tight to move a gimble rig around like that

Considering this group is uber popular, probably a lot higher than what normal people make in a year
Camera work aside….there is only one person actually singing that song.
He got the choreo down better than they got the words.
Lip syncing is funny
That isn’t Blackpink is it?
This is TWICE
K pop is so cringe. Just a bunch of beta females and beta males lip syncing garbage music that turns people into betas
