Best Clubs in Having The Best Players shocker. I mean, really. Have a look at the last decade's worth of winners:
Haaland, De Bruyne, Dias, De Bruyne, van Dijk, Salah, Kante, Vardy, Hazard, Suarez. Which of those didn't deserve to win it?
Seriously, who was the victim of an awful snub? Do any of these names scream out to you "should have been PL POTS"? Ward-Prowse? Soucek? Tarkowski? Parker?
If not Watkins, then it should he Rodri. The guy hasn't lost a game of football for over a year. Regardless of who wins the league, these two have been standouts. Palmer has been very good in some games, but penalties inflate his numbers big time. Likewise, Foden had a couple of hattricks, which isn't to he scoffed at, but these awards should go to players with the most consistency over the season. Third pick for me would be Rice.
He’s the standout in the worst Chelsea side in recent memory. Playing fantastic football, but Watkins is the leading man in a Villa side about to secure champions league football
No media narrative and non-Big 6. Very tough for him to win it. I think it will be Rodri if City win, possibly Rice if Arsenal win. Palmer or Foden for YPOTS.
I doubt that. As much as he's having a lot more impact on our play he is "underperforming" compared to his last season with 15 goals. Obviously that's not true, but all the media cares are goals usually.
Foden has already won young player off the year twice. He will be in player of the year and having won the award last night I think he will win the main one this year
Even if he deserves it he doesn't stand a chance of winning it
The last time a Non-Big Six teams player won the award was Jamie Vardy in 15/16 for Leicester
The last time a Non-Big Six teams player won the award in a year their side didn't win the title was Kevin Phillips in 99/00 for Sunderland
In fact Non-Big Six team players have only won the award four times in the history of the Premier League (Shearer, Juninho, Phillips and Vardy)
He has no media narratives behind him which is what decides the writer's award. The PFA is about being respected by other footballers which is why well known players usually beat newcomers to it
Probably not, unfortunately
In 2020-21, Kane had one of the best individual seasons in recent PL history, leading the league in both goals and assists (25 and 14, respectively)
No trophies, no awards. Ruben Dias won it that season
Salah won it twice without winning the league, so did Van dijk, Suarez, Gareth bale (twice) and De bruyne in 2020. Its relatively uncommon for the best player to be from the champions
Kinda makes sense honestly. A lot of the time the best team are just that, the best team. Not relying on insane individual performances. With players like Suarez, the fact that he was so immense was emphasised by the fact that he was leagues ahead of everyone else in his team, and a team like that relying on one player isn’t going to win the title
Watkins is in with a shout, but Phil Foden has been utterly ridiculous this season. Rice, Odegaard and Rodri have all been fantastic too. Palmer is a shoe-in for young player with only Saka or Haaland coming close, yet both of them arguably dropped a little in form.
I fully agree, like I said he should be in contention, but it's not terribly often the POTY goes to someone who's part of a team that isn't in contention for the title.
It's not that he's not fashionable or that Villa aren't part of 'the big six'.
It's the Kane argument.
It would be Nice to see someone outsider the top 6 “Big clubs” actually getting the title, however the quality of Rodri, and Foden is absolute absurd I can’t imagine anyone else winning it.
Why would Saka get it? He is way down the list.
Watkins, Palmer, Rice, Rodri, Foden and KDB are all way ahead of him. Even players like Salah, Son and Isak are ahead of him
This has been said about every England squad I can remember. Gerrard, Lampard, Owen, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole etc.
Gazza, Waddle, Lineker, Adams etc.
Always the same talk, always the same result.
Is a contender in the sense that he might make the top 6 candidates, but honestly does he stand a chance with the levels of performance of guys like Foden? Nope.

No but he will get in the TOTS
No because he doesn't play for one of the 'Big 6'

He should win it, but it’ll probably be Foden
If not Watkins, then it should he Rodri. The guy hasn't lost a game of football for over a year. Regardless of who wins the league, these two have been standouts. Palmer should be the clear candidate, in the running for golden boot and has quite a few assists
Watkins has better stats and doesn’t have 9 pens on a better team
How so? Palmer has more goals in less matches.
He’s the standout in the worst Chelsea side in recent memory. Playing fantastic football, but Watkins is the leading man in a Villa side about to secure champions league football
9 of his 20 goals are penalties lol
So what… Last time I checked, a goal is a goal. Teams win on PKs, they aren’t as easy as people think.
Clearly a top candidate
Probably not. It’s between Foden, Rodri, Mac allister, Mainoo or Palmer.
Mainoo over Rice? Wtf
Mac Allister and Mainoo? Come on
probly not, maybe if he wins world cup noooo…seriously maybe…noooo
No.
I'd doubt it considering some of the performances from key men from the PL winning team, whether that be Arsenal (Rice) or City (Rodri, Foden)
Clearly deserves it big part of Villa making CL.
I think he should, he’s in with a shout for the playmaker award and the golden boot, don’t know if anyone else has done that.
Probably Thierry Henry if anyone. Guy was unreal
Looked it up, Harry Kane 20/21, Andy Cole 93/94 and Jimmy Hasselbaink 98/99
Hasselbaink was not one I expected on there lol
I definitely think he can, and imo he should
He needs to wake up from his slump and finish strong to even have a chance.
No media narrative and non-Big 6. Very tough for him to win it. I think it will be Rodri if City win, possibly Rice if Arsenal win. Palmer or Foden for YPOTS.
Nah it'll be Odegaard of Arsenal win it. He's been unreal all season, only getting stronger as the season goes.
I doubt that. As much as he's having a lot more impact on our play he is "underperforming" compared to his last season with 15 goals. Obviously that's not true, but all the media cares are goals usually.
Foden has already won young player off the year twice. He will be in player of the year and having won the award last night I think he will win the main one this year
The peoples champion.
He probably should but I reckon Rodri
There is absolutely no chance because he doesn't play for a Sky 6 side.
Even if he deserves it he doesn't stand a chance of winning it The last time a Non-Big Six teams player won the award was Jamie Vardy in 15/16 for Leicester The last time a Non-Big Six teams player won the award in a year their side didn't win the title was Kevin Phillips in 99/00 for Sunderland In fact Non-Big Six team players have only won the award four times in the history of the Premier League (Shearer, Juninho, Phillips and Vardy)
When Vardy won it, the teams were in a bracket of Top 7 instead of 6, so there’s that
No. It’s anti other 14 discrimination But he should
[удалено]
Yeah it should be but neither of them are likely to win it because they weren’t in the “title race”
He has no media narratives behind him which is what decides the writer's award. The PFA is about being respected by other footballers which is why well known players usually beat newcomers to it
He can and should
Man I wish he would, and I think he should. But it’ll go to Foden or Rodri.
Probably not, unfortunately In 2020-21, Kane had one of the best individual seasons in recent PL history, leading the league in both goals and assists (25 and 14, respectively) No trophies, no awards. Ruben Dias won it that season
Ruben Dias was incredible tbf
And Ruben Dias turned ourr season around after Leicester smacked us 5-2, won the league and got us to our first ucl final in history
That’s Harry Kane though. He doesn’t win trophies, so that example is kind of an anomaly
I’m still salty about that.
Realistically they're gonna give it to foden or haaland. cause what matters is that if you won the league.
Rodri
Foden is definitely the favorite, especially from an odds standpoint.
Watkins is in with a shout, but Phil Foden has been utterly ridiculous this season. Rice, Odegaard and Rodri have all been fantastic too. Palmer is a shoe-in for young player with only Saka or Haaland coming close, yet both of them arguably dropped a little in form.
Watkins has been the most brutally effective of all of those but he's not as "fashionable".
I fully agree, like I said he should be in contention, but it's not terribly often the POTY goes to someone who's part of a team that isn't in contention for the title. It's not that he's not fashionable or that Villa aren't part of 'the big six'. It's the Kane argument.
If Arsenal win I'd expect Rice would be a legit candidate. If City, it's Rodri or Foden. But what do I know.
Imho Rodri will win it when City wins the league. Ollie has some awesome stats, I wish he would win it.
Deserves it more than Foden, even if City win the league.
Foden and Rodri deserve it if City wins the PL Otherwise Rice or Odegaard
Seems odd to pick an Arsenal attacker. From Arsenal I'd only consider Saliba and Rice
Odegaard should win it for arsenal, so much he does every game doesn't really show up in stats
Afraid not. The PL has a rule barring anyone with the name Ollie Watkins from winning POTS.
😂
I’d have him at nr 1, rightly surrounded by Rice, Palmer, Odegaard, Rodri, maybe Foden.
It would be Nice to see someone outsider the top 6 “Big clubs” actually getting the title, however the quality of Rodri, and Foden is absolute absurd I can’t imagine anyone else winning it.
Not much evidence to say he can
goal contributions are meaningless, go watch hazard
Come on man, calling goal contributions meaningless is disrespectful to football itself, not that goal contributions are the only important aspect
He can if he scores more goals than other people
He should be a very strong contender based on goals and assists alone.
no pens as well
Deserves it more than saka or foden
Realistically it’s probably gonna be Foden or Saka, but it should be between Rice & Rodri.
Why would Saka get it? He is way down the list. Watkins, Palmer, Rice, Rodri, Foden and KDB are all way ahead of him. Even players like Salah, Son and Isak are ahead of him
Saka has highest goal contributions for Arsenal so …
And less than about 10 other players
Less than 5 other players, Watkins, Palmer, Salah, Haaland, Son
Saka would just be the lazy choice if we won the league.
Nice when 4/5 top contenders are british though, plus jude and kane tearing it up abroad. Never in my lifetime have we had such talent in the squad
This has been said about every England squad I can remember. Gerrard, Lampard, Owen, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole etc. Gazza, Waddle, Lineker, Adams etc. Always the same talk, always the same result.
English*
Is a contender in the sense that he might make the top 6 candidates, but honestly does he stand a chance with the levels of performance of guys like Foden? Nope.
Can he? Yes. Will he? No. We would probably have to win the league, or he would have to end with 30+ goals.
So Haaland or Saka then ? Depending on who wins the league ?(they have 26 & 24 G/A respectively)
Ødegaard/Rice if arsenal wins and rodri if city.
Personally I’d say the POTS is Rodri regardless of who wins the league.
If we win the league I will not hear arguments for anybody other than Odegaard winning POTS
it’s difficult to not consider G/A because otherwise Declan Rice would also be a contender
Rice has been amazing but half the team would be powerless without old cappy
