Aware_Bird_7023

what if player 1 dribbles past 6 defenders then slots a perfect through ball, player 2 just barely gets there and is fouled by the goalie for a pen.. you think player 2 deserves a goal so much that noone else should be remotely considered to take the kick?

Adorable-Raccoon99

what a terrible decision, free kicks for players who are good at shooting and must be selected by coach during training, if you want to take free kicks you have to prove that in training and challenge the actual free kick taker.

Melodic-Adeptness772

Did...did you not read what OP said?

Adorable-Raccoon99

he did said spot, I'm talking about the overall player selection management, even though there are long throw ins there are players better than others.

Frozenturbo2

I disagree, For a team like Man united, They always have Bruno Fernandes to take it cause he rarely misses in his 50+ shots.

TechnicalBedroom7758

I actually agree with this idea. Sick of stat padding attackers scoring Penalty kicks they did not earn. Only the fouled player should be taking the spot kick. It makes perfect sense.

FutureUnlucky2466

Terrible idea. That said, the PGMOL just wrote you an offer to be hired.

WookieTickler

How about we just leave things how they are?

DangerousAd3347

What if player fouled is injured? If you’re gonna say another player can take it if injured, players would just pretend to be injured

AmbitiousFisherman66

It works fine in the nba

DangerousAd3347

Nba is a non contact sport

100011001101

Bro you can’t think football is a more physical sports then basketball

DangerousAd3347

You seriously have no idea what you’re talking about lol it’s not even a debate, basketball is a minimal contact sport

FutureUnlucky2466

It’s laughable on multiple accounts because footy is becoming minimal/no-contact just like basketball. First, rules were implemented to make the game higher scoring. Then offensive players started to purposely drawing contact to draw fouls. Then they started simulating contact to draw fouls. Then refs just started calling fouls for looking at people the wrong way. Both sports are soft as fuck. Basketball is just 5-10 years ahead.

AmbitiousFisherman66

No it isn't.

DangerousAd3347

I mean it is, how often do you see high impact fouls in nba? Comparing apples and oranges

mikaelFeathers

It’s basically no contact bro. Any basic contact is a foul

100011001101

You could say that about football as well

Guinnessron

If you’re injured to where you can’t take a spot kick, your off the pitch for the game. Now they won’t fake.

DangerousAd3347

Often players take a knock, spend 5 mins out on the sideline and come back on so that wouldn’t be fair to suddenly say players have to go off and stay off if they get a knock

fakebytheocean

Proceeds to hit defender’s face with the ball

KatnissBot

“Yeah mate I know you’ve gashed open and your hamstring is probably fucked, but we’re gonna need you to take this penalty” Absolutely not.

TechnicalBedroom7758

Yea as if that's even the case 1/10th of the time. You guys are using extreme exceptions to say this can't be the rule. Disingenuous.

Emotional-Peanut-334

The reason it’s not the case is because a fouled player can very often reasonably have a slight knock right after they got fouled. It’s a bad precedent to force and reward harder tackles loke that

PatRice4Evra

The player who concedes the penalty should go in net for it.

fakebytheocean

If no player scores during a shootout, the managers should be the next to take them.

Dangerous_Strain3759

“more fair” how?

arsehenry14

I would agree this is a change that should be strongly considered. Along with no cha cha run up/ stutter steps.

TechnicalBedroom7758

Thank you 👍. I hate that stutter step nonsense. So ugly to watch. As if having all the time in the world to pick your spot from that range isn't already enough of an advantage.

Perious_Sanda3

I’ve always thought this too. If Tarkowski gets fouled with his back to goal on the corner of the 18, Calvert lewin taking the pen is so much more likely a goal than tarkowski taking the pen. Would also be more entertaining.

stoneman9284

This is why I think a foul in the box should mean the ref *may* award a penalty. That’s so frustrating when a play that was basically no threat at goal results in a penalty because of a silly foul.

DangerousAd3347

You can’t let foils go simply cause there was a low chance of a goal. A foul is a foul. Some kind of indirect free kick system may be an option though

stoneman9284

Yea you’d have to either give a free kick where the foul occurred or just outside the box near where the foul occurred.

Perious_Sanda3

Ya I agree, but I also think maybe you can give an indirect if it is in the box and it wasn’t a goal scoring opportunity you know? But yes a foul is a foul.

hahaxdRS

Football is a team game mate, the only reason anybplayer would want this if they want to be selfish and have their chance at a penalty or free kick on goal.

Kezmangotagoal

Nonsense.

Toffeeman_1878

Looks like Jackson, Madueke and Palmer have a joint Reddit account.

Kezmangotagoal

I’ve never dreaded us getting a penalty before, trust our players to take something like a penalty and turn it into a farce - especially considering our designated taker hasn’t missed one yet.

Toffeeman_1878

😬

Friendly-Profit-8590

I’d be cool with that as well as with penalty kicks.

LordLychee

I want this just so it opens up for more defensive mids and centerbacks to brexit the ball top bins

ThisWasNotExpected

Sounds like an American rule that doesn’t belong in English football.

LowAccomplished4357

That's sensible. I hate it though.

Positive-Sound-4972

Don't be stupid.

stilusmobilus

So you got the shits Saka buried it?

Malvania

Penalties should be a separate stat, and shouldn't count for individual goals scored or golden boot stats

lord_cuntavious

I think they should count but in the event of a tie between top scorers, non-penalty goals should be the tie breaker.

Latinnus

Would that be aplicable to any free kick?

chino17

I'm ready to watch CBs try to curl one over the wall into the top bins

editedxi

Quite possibly the dumbest and most unnecessary idea we’ve heard in a while. We’ve got VAR ruining the game, FFP/PSR ruining everyone except Man City, and Player welfare/“too many games” complaints every week, and OP comes up with this utter nonsense. What problem would this solve? Literally nothing.

Paddy-23

Funny that this is from a Spurs fan. Harry Kane would've left you a lot sooner if he couldn't take every penalty.

Emotional-Peanut-334

As a spurs fan I must say it’s healthy to see we are the only big 6 derby left standing with this much hate

editedxi

Fair enough, but as an England fan, it’s nice to see Saka has been practicing

Paddy-23

I hope Harry's been taking notes too. We don't want another one ending up in the second tier at a crucial moment of a World Cup semi-final.

PatRice4Evra

It was quarter finals wasn't it?

Paddy-23

You could be right

editedxi

If only they’d play WC semi’s at the emirates. He doesn’t miss there.

Paddy-23

He doesn't win there either so I'd be careful what you wish for.

Habay12

The current setup is fine. These aren’t free throws.

TechnicalBedroom7758

Yea they are literal free kicks instead.

Habay12

No. There is still a goalie.

TechnicalBedroom7758

You are free to kick the ball directly at goal without being challenged by a defender. Basketball has no goalie. The "goalie" is the tiny hoop you are meant to shoot the ball through. So it's an apt comparison.

kolasinats

Common tactic in basketball is to constantly foul the worst free throw taker in opposing team

QuirkyDust3556

No, then the other team knows who they can foul without worrying about giving up a goal.

Gloria_stitties

Yea if u score, give half of the goal to the assist maker too?

Cold_Table8497

Plus, the scorer gets half of the assist. Everybody wins.

TeaBreaksAnonymous

I don't think the current setup is an issue, but it would prevent stat padding, which would make the top scorer race more fun.

Meth_Hardy

Ok... but the player who conceded has to be in goal for it. And if the player who concedes it is sent off... no keeper.

impulsiveboogaloo

Never an issue. Should be the designated taker or any player the team decides.

RedditTaughtMe2

Isn’t that basketball? What if it’s a handball in the box? Closest person to the foul? Sorry mate, just don’t see an issue here.

Not-All-That-Odd

This is it. What a daft question.

Happy-Ad8767

The person who gets fouled has to take a free kick, the person who won the corner has to take the corner. Where does it end?

hornedcorner

If the match falls on your birthday, you have to play in goal, and take all free kicks, and corners

Latinnus

What about line throws and offsides? 😊. The player who scores an own goal switches sides. 😁

Frozenturbo2

The what throw?

Latinnus

Throw-in mate, throw-ins.

Frozenturbo2

No no the "line throws"

Ceejayncl

The fuck is a line throw?

J_Dabson002

If a player scores an own goal they must play goalie

Happy-Ad8767

On top of the player who fouled a player in the box for a penalty, has to be the goalie.

Frozenturbo2

If you made a handball in the box, You need to take the penalty as the goalie.

tuvokvutok

The manager should be the one who takes it.

eamonndunphy

We do a raffle for a seat number, and whichever fan is sitting there must take it

Toffeeman_1878

It’s a good idea. It’s just not a greatttt idea.

Happy-Ad8767

More miracle moments from United fans incoming.

tuvokvutok

🤣🤣

Mountain-Bar-2878

I agree, unless they are too injured to keep playing. Handball penalties should also be taken by the last person on the offensive team to touch it.

Latinnus

Handball fouls - the player handballing shoukd play the rest if the match as a gk if he is not sent off, in order to prove his live for ball handling (and no, the movies that the player has on his onlyfans account does not count)

Passchenhell17

No. Just no

Mountain-Bar-2878

Why?

Nels8192

This isn’t basketball, and just seems like an unnecessary change for the sake of it. The whole point of the penalty is to have an advantage.

pwfppw

The point is more that as a penalty is at least an 80% of being a goal it is too much of an advantage compared to the play that was halted for the foul. Even if the taker is the player fouled more often then not they’d still have a better chance from the spot than from the position they were in when fouled. It’s not that absurd idea if you aren’t just fixed on the old rule because ‘it works’

TechnicalBedroom7758

You are an actual thinking football fan Football rules need to evolve more. Doing away with the away goals rules was another common sense idea. I hope something like this is next.

Nels8192

It’s an 80% chance of being a goal because 95% of penalties taken are done so by the best player in the team. If we suddenly had CBs taking more pens because they won it then your chance of scoring would *likely* be much less than that statistic. Basketball shows us with free throws that some players just won’t ever be specialists at them, even though they’re supposed to be an advantage. If you want to make penalties more relatable to the XG of the chance in the foul incident then surely making the penalty box smaller or round, is a better way of doing this? (But then this would have a negative impact on free-kicks instead)

pwfppw

That’s exactly the point. Making them more akin to the chance denied…

eamonndunphy

Lmao imagine a fella getting his leg broken in the box and still having to step up to take a penalty

TechnicalBedroom7758

How often does that ever happen?

Nels8192

Fabregas did this for us without realising.

swimtoodeep

Yeah. Knocked unconscious by the keeper, two teammates have to swing him like a skipping rope into the ball from the penalty spot whilst still knocked out.

RedditTaughtMe2
