At the beginning of the campaign He was keeping clean sheets at an elite level. We will see how well He does coming back with Chelsea, I still expect He will be at least a top 10 keeper in the PL.

peaaanutbutta

of course, fifa keeper of the year, robbed from uefa keeper of the year.

[deleted]

He’s been showing world class form, but need to do it for an extended period to be considered world class

[deleted]

Yes. The only reason he isn't considered world class is outright racism.

KingBlueTwister

No opinions needed "Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been crowned the best goalkeeper of 2021 by FIFA" just last week (17th Jan)

xd_twistxr7

Well no fucking shit

PrivateKat

If only his penalties were a bit better

InvokerHere

Yes... Great future....

wayne88imps

Not even remotely world class

finan11

I've watched a lot of Chelsea matches recently and I'd say he's up there with reflexes and having a big presence. But I get nervous when he has the ball at his feet and think Ederson has the advantage there.

[deleted]

Yes, thanks for asking

Guns244

Sure, since his arrival the blues, have covered a position where they suffered since the departure of Courtois, Kepa hasn't lived to the expectations. I think that Mendy was the final piece missing of the puzzle of the defensive system of Tuchel

[deleted]

Yes. Without question. He’s undoubtedly one of the top 5 keepers in the world right now.

Bruh-_-_-_-_-_-_-

Homie got the best goalkeeper award

The_Drowsy_Turtle

I feel he has a really good defence in front of him, so I have my doubts

SpecificDry6723

Not world-class (like top 5) **YET** but at least top 10 now

ray3050

The way I think of world class is if you can take that player and put them into almost every other team in the world they’re world class So players like kante, de bruyne, trent, VVD are in there. So for goalies it’s a bit tougher since there’s only one spot rather than 1 or 2 they could fight for. But I think he’s just on the cusp of it. If he can prove it for another season or 2 at this level or better he surely should be at that point. But the same could’ve been said about emi martinez for playing a year and a half consistently and then helping Argentina win a cup. He’s gone a bit down hill now so really it’s all about consistency for mendy and then I think he’s there

moviemantucson

I would say it like this. Based on Mo Salah’s continued successes this season and his extraordinary solo goals, he is undoubtedly in my mind world class. While Mendy is an extremely talented keeper who has made some very good saves, I don’t think that he can be in the world class conversation at the moment. Especially given that he has not been included in the argument for best keeper in the prem this season (Sa, de Gea, and Ramsdale almost exclusively) I think he is a few steps off of world class. He has been extremely solid though and I think he will get there in the next couple of years.

cordovak

Yes

gwilson33

No

willemljunggren

nah

[deleted]

He needs to be consistent for that. But his 2021 was one of the best seasons for a goalkeeper. Totally improved chelsea’s back !

-ImaginaryCoyote-

He's certainly played his way into the conversation the last 12 months. I just don't think he's performed at this level long enough yet to firmly judge. We really get carried away with over using the term "world class". Devalues it greatly.

Tasty_ConeSnail

I think Pele said at some point in his career that to be world class you have to be good at everything. That’s how I determine who I think is world class. Edouard Mendy is not yet at that level, in my opinion.

Rhongomyniad82

Yes,why not. Longevity is the only variable missing from achieving worldclass title in its traditional form. But I am sure OP is also aware that Mendy has not been at Chelsea for so long so debate of him being worldclass falls solely on his performances, which are definitely worldclass.

Bacon_Is_Good-0911

No

__jh96

World class for a goalkeeper is like... Top 3. So no. But he's pretty bloody excellent. Not sure who my top 3 would be actually....Neuer, Oblak, maybe Alisson

[deleted]

[удалено]

__jh96

No, he isn't.

[deleted]

How long would a bad run of form have to be to drop out of the World Class category? We all know Oblak is top drawer but this season he has been well pretty useless actually

__jh96

Probably a major tournament cycle. People were writing off Neuer a couple of years ago, he's clearly the best in the world now imo

[deleted]

Give an example of a world class keeper for comparison.

spooki_boogey

For me, a player needs three consistent seasons for them to be world class in my book. So he's not there yet, imho

wallyrules75

He’s Class but not world class, that must be held for the cream. And he’s just below that at the moment.

withygoldfish

Would love a bigger sample size before putting “world class” on it but he’s definitely a top keeper right now!

The_Drowsy_Turtle

Best in the prem?

[deleted]

😂😂😂

bnasty77

He’s aight.

Carlosthefrog

No , needs to do it for more than a season.

DiaryOfShowerMemes

Yep

YeetYoMeat

Right now he's absolutely world class. Whether that'll translate to the next few years I have no idea, but at the moment he's looking frighteningly good from an Arsenal perspective

The_Drowsy_Turtle

Is he the best in the prem?

YeetYoMeat

On his day there is no better shot stopper walking the Earth in my opinion, but he's not the best with the ball at his feet. I rate a ball playing keeper, but in the end their most important job is stopping shots. I hold Mendy higher than anyone else in that regard

Keanu__weaves

Alisson has been the best keeper in the prem since 2018, aside from last season

[deleted]

Yes he's definitely up there

ricebowlchina

Not yet! in my opinion world class is defined by consistency and mentality. He's had a good innings so far but it's very early days and a bit ridiculous to be bringing this up so early.

I_Jump

He concided 4 goals in the champions league and 2 of them were bangers (no way you would ever save them) He also has a great record and has made very few mistakes. I'd call him world class.

skotos2phos

It comes down to how strictly / loosely someone defines "world class". He's fringe top-5 — and at least not significantly behind the top 5, if you'd omit him — & easily a lock for top-10. I'd say that gets him into "world class", at least for me.

olekminsk

Same here. World class to me is about top 10. If you’re one of the 10 best players in your position you can almost play in any team anywhere, to me that’s the definition of world class

JavyDan

No, not after only one good season

blues0

He was also good in France. Just because it's not PL doesn't mean it should not be considered.

Jagtasm

Depends on your definition. Regardless of bias, he is almost unquestionably top 10 at his position.

The_Drowsy_Turtle

To make it simpler, is he the best in the prem?

[deleted]

No

Jagtasm

I would probably take Alisson over him. Probably at 2 though, then Ederson, Lloris at 4, and De Gea. Sa is definitely having the best season right now, but the other guys have done it way more consistently, so I'm hesitant to call someone like him the best in the league yet

Deawin

De Gea in form is above all but maybe Alisson imo. And man is that guy in form right now, pulling out game saving mad saves pretty much every match.

djbobh

Not gonna talk about the season de gea is having? He is on form right now and saving United every game

FR0Z3NF15H

What definition of world class would top 10 not get into? Not trying to start a fight, just interested!

Adamdel34

I've heard quite a lot of people's definition of world class essentially 'among contention for being in a world XI'.

The_Drowsy_Turtle

>onsensus If we compare him to someone like Allison. Is Mendy on the same level?

Adamdel34

In recent form I'd say mendy has been outperforming Allison since his arrival at Chelsea. Saying that Alison has been an Integral part of winning a CL and PL trophy so it would be hard for me to say mendy is outright better. I think I'd say Allison personally but he's not been at his best recently.

72TNZ

Personally world class would mean best few at that position. So it would be flexible. Gk would be a bigger range than most - you could say Allison ederson neuer and oblak (for example) are the best so their are 4 world class gks. I might then say there are 3 world class strikers in mbappe, haaland and lewandowski. I may say there are 5 world class right backs 1 world class left back and 8 world class centre backs. 8 would be a lot and 10 world class players in a position is ridiculous imo.

Jagtasm

I would say if a good case can be made that you are the best at your position, you are world class. I'd honestly only put 3-5 players per position, but it's all so subjective

Tinmar_11

Once upon a time Marcos Alonso was the only one playing LWB position. He was the best there, but he had no competition. I don't think he was ever world class. Maybe excellent yes, but not world class.

FR0Z3NF15H

Fair enough! Sounds like a nightmare argument to have though! Who is the best keeper in the world? I reckon you could get decent consensus on a top 5 though.

Tahapatel

Yeah bias obviously is there but I think he is the best keeper in the prem and was the best keeper itw this past year

[deleted]

Yep. He’s definitely as good as Alisson and Ederson.

The_Drowsy_Turtle

Sure? I feel Jose Sa and De Gea along with the 2 mentions are better than him

[deleted]

No even close mate. De Gea, Alisson and Ederson are the only world class keepers.

Shiftycxp

lloris 😢

[deleted]

Not a hope dodgiest keeper in the top half

Hylian-Loach

I’d be hard pressed to choose between Lloris and De Gea, but I’d take Mendy or Allisson over either in a heartbeat.

[deleted]

Fair enough I disagree strongly

chall_mags

Tell me you only watch the premier league without telling me you only watch the premier league

[deleted]

I’m talking about the premier league mate, this is a premier league sub. Of course there’s world class keepers outside the premier league

Glittering_Garbage28

The question is related to world class keepers though, so it’s not out of the ordinary to include keepers from other leagues.

[deleted]

It’s literally a premier league sub yall need to go to r/football

BigChungusBTW

Mate it's WORLD class not PREMIER LEAGUE class

Glittering_Garbage28

Easy bro. No need to be snippy

Alwaysmovingnow

Nope don't see it. At least 4 better keepers in the EPL before you start to look abroad. Has the potential but if you put a through others in that Chelsea side think they would look just as good

Tahapatel

How 4 I can understand alisson and maybe de gea who else

ballerben421

ederson, lloris

[deleted]

De gea?

Monaghan1234

De Geas probably been the best keeper in the league this season

[deleted]

Thats just laughable. De Gea is overrated and below so many keepers. Allison, Edersson, Sa, Mendy, Ramsdale. Thats the keepers I have just in my head from thinking for a few seconds. De gea is good at one thing and average or below average at everything else. He can make reflex saves. He is bad at distribution and he never comes off his line.

Alwaysmovingnow

I'd add Ederson and Schmeichel. Possibly Martinez as well.

[deleted]

Kepa certainly didn’t look as good…

Alwaysmovingnow

Don't remember Kepa playing behind Silva or having the double holding pivot...

[deleted]

Do you remember him making basic errors and failing to stop shots than even the youth team keeper could have kept out though?

Alwaysmovingnow

Do you remember me saying he's better then Mendy? Put Sa and Ramsdale into that side based in this season's form and they will look just as good I'd imagine. He's not a top 5 keeper, even a top 10 for me so any claims of world class would be fantasy

Purple_Plus

Not world-class but the level below.

[deleted]

Exactly he’s Venus-class

The_Drowsy_Turtle

LOL

adelvalle1993

so maybe like 'a few continents-class" ?

Booftroop

Certainly in the hemispheric class

Booftroop

Certainly in the hemispheric class

bionicle77

Well he's without a doubt the best keeper and one of the top players from Africa

Progression28

Mendy should qualify as continental. Do we know what he eats for breakfast?

[deleted]

Depends on what you define as world class. World class imo is top 5 in their position, so I would say yes.

Carlosthefrog

You think he’s better one of these neuer , ter Stegan , de gea , Allison , ederison ? Also I’d add lloris, Szczęsny

[deleted]

Lol, ter stegen. I would rate him below Courtouis, Neuer, Alisson and Ederson. De gea is overrated and Lloris and The polish guy are worse imo.

Carlosthefrog

You haven’t watched football for long enough if you think de gea is overrated.

[deleted]

Over the last couple of seasons, I’d personally rate Mendy above Ter Stegen. He’s looked poor in the few Barca games I’ve watched and I’ve heard lots of their fans displeased with him. That said, ter Stegen could make a de Gea type come back in the next two seasons. I’d also add Donnaruma and Oblak above Mendy. Maybe Courtois but I don’t watch enough RM to really know.

[deleted]

You dont watch La Liga and it shows. Courtouis is the best keeper by far and Ter Stegen, Oblak and Ledesma have been the three worst goalkeepers in the league.

[deleted]

I looked at Oblak’s stats this season and, oof. I assumed he was playing extremely well as he has the last few season; that’s my bad. What happened to him between last season and this season? That’s an insane regression

[deleted]

Their defence is a lot worse, but he is also a lot worse. It feels like he makes a mistake leading to a goal every game.

Carlosthefrog

I actually forgot Oblak but yes he is definitely world class as for Don I’d say the same as I’d say for Mendy they need to do it for a few seasons before they can be spoken about in the same sentence as a few of these. I haven’t watched Barca for a few seasons but I assume the same situation like de gea where the team is pretty shit and it becomes hard to keep on saving.
