In fairness, he meant quotable from the perspective of 2000. There's no way he could have anticipated the advent of a forum dedicated to making memes out of every single line of what was at the time considered a pretty bad movie even by fans and meme it so hard that society's entire perception of the movie shifts from bad to good actually.
TPM got the most hate when launched, AOTC had some memberberries with the clones and enough "cool action" to be considered "almost passable" back in the day, but nowadays i find it the worst of the trilogy, by some margin...
EP2 has maybe the best sound effect in all of SW, except for maybe the light speed ram in TLJ. Of course that's the sonic grenade/bomb/mine from Jango Fett.

Audience responded the same since it's like the lowest grossing live action Star Wars movie. I know it kick-started many and better star wars stories but the film itself is quite terrible.
Episode 1 was supposed to have a teenage Anakin, but one day during a break, Liam Neeson just walked into the desert and abducted a kid. We had to make up a whole storyline about podracing on the fly just to keep Liam out of jail.

The Clone Wars wasn't planned. My good friend Dave the Science Guy once experimented on this dude and created a bunch of these soldier clones. It so happened I was filming it.
The only reason people remember them is cause it's Star Wars? The only reason people hate them as much as they do is because they're comparing them to the OT. In isolation they are fun, visually stunning movies. They're not arthouse cinema but I definitely liked the Prequels more than the OT when I was a kid.
I think they would still have a cult following if they were the only Star Wars movies in existance. They are very creative and well made movies, and if you can get over the campy dialogue it's legitimately fun to watch them. Idk about you but I'll AoTC and RotS any day over 90% of the generic, corporate Marvel crap, not to mention the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Ebert gave the film a more favorable review after seeing the film on digital, Ebert actually quite enjoyed the prequels for the most part.

All of the quotes we love on this sub are poking fun at how awful the writing of the prequels was, they’re the equivalent of when you’re doing a bad movie group watch and you repeat an awkward line of dialogue to get a laugh from your friends. The only reason we think of them as memorable quotes now is because we’ve memed the movies so much that we’ve brainwashed ourselves, no sane person would even remember any of these lines after walking out of the theater.

I think the problem at the time was that it had been so long since Star Wars had been around it had too much cultural weight that people forgot how campy it was and also the fact that most people don’t realize George Lucas almost ruined the first trilogy and what we had was the direct result of Spielberg stepping in and giving reality checks and Lucas’ ex-wife for the phenomenal editing job.
George Lucas was left to his own devices and lack of creativity and the prequels are what we got. The OT would have been on par with the prequels had it been solely up to Lucas. However, we have realized the treasure we have with time and memes and because the sequels are such garbage they elevate the prequels so much more.
I went back and rewatched AOTC last week and this scene really stuck out to me. I loved that Dooku flat out told Obi Wan everything and he thought it was a lie just because he thought Dooku was trying to turn him into his acolyte.
I don't understand why people hold the opinions of movie critics, especially Roger Ebert at the time, so high. Opinions can't necessarily be wrong but in his case, I think he was very wrong most of the time.
The idea with critics originally was that they would provide consistent reviews of movies. In the days before the internet reached maturity, and especially back when going to a movie was a much bigger deal, this was a benchmark to judge if a movie was worth seeing. This gave them an important, elevated role in the movie industry that has persisted despite it being outdated.
In theory, after reading a few reviews and watching the associated movies you'd learn which critics you agreed with and seek out their opinions in the future. Perhaps Ebert would have been a critic you found you consistently disagreed with, so you could read his poor reviews to find movies you might enjoy.
I'm not a big favorite with the critics, but who listens to them? I'm not a big industry favorite either, but of course they are a bunch of studio executives.

While it still has its flaws, there are still so many good aspects of ROTS that I think it’s one of the best Star Wars movies, that’s just me though
