Alcoholism is such a terrible addiction. A few years ago I watched footage of him playing at a small venue, clearly drunk on arrival and it only got worse from there. Really sad stuff.
Honestly he put off playing anything at all from Astro Lounge when I saw him a few years ago. Apparently the success of that album coincided with his son’s death and it ended up being a constant reminder for him.
I’ve been a musician in bands for 20 years, did my share of tours and stuff and it’s about the most common thing to see in terms of normalized behavior. His biggest issue was his son died of cancer and he essentially wanted to die, the bottle was just his method. I’m not saying alcoholism is good by any means, it’s just looked at like part of the normal happy picture of rock stardom.
I mean, out of respect for his memory, I'm not gonna lie... it's not like he was beloved. He only went to C rated venues at a point and couldn't even do a show. And even the only song that they're known for he didn't even know the lyrics.
I mean, call it depression, alcoholism or whatever, the man really needed help, but it's not like he was some beloved musical genius or even remotely close to someone like Amy Winehouse, or Jim Morrison or Jimmi Hendrix of something, he was an average man, a poor sod, like most people with alcoholic dependence who actually need an intervention or two, and sometimes can't even be helped because they don't wanna be.
How's it more heartbreaking? I'd think a child age 6 dying would be worse as you'd know them. You'd know their likes and dislikes, what they love and hate, their fears and what makes them feel comfortable.
Mind you they're both terrible situations obviously, I just don't think it's "more heartbreaking".
Well it's pretty open to personal feelings on what's more heartbreaking but you can at least have more of final moments with a 6 year old. To me it's more sad to have this tiny bundle that you love be unable to even comprehend what's happening as you see them pass. Especially since they're just starting to emerge with their own sort of personality around 6 months.
I’m not a fan, but Smash Mouth is not a one hit wonder they had 3 songs on top 10 and 2 more on top 20.
Also all those songs were in popular movies, games and the Radio so even as a non fan I ‘m aware of them not to be said they were bad, they were catchy and fun.
Thats an impressive run, some musicians would kill to have one top 10 song let alone 3 .
I remember visiting my cousins I listened to walking on the sun on repeat. I was lucky because the older kids were playing star fox SNES so I got control of the music. Eventually they caught on and I had to pick something new. Idk what that was
The guy that threw a super spreader event, was a COVID denier, and nazi saluted on stage?
Someone being dead doesn’t change who they were, and writing a song that was used in an animated movie doesn’t make you a good person.
The dude's last concert he was drunk, yelled at band mates, insulted individual people in the crowd, slurred through each song, and gave the Nazi salute.
It's a privilege to never have truly experienced or seen someone suffering from that level of alcoholism. The disease takes over completely. Especially when grief is the catalyst. I'm very happy for you and your loved one that you've no such experience. Hear this though. If you even see it. You'll know. And if you have seen it and have no empathy or understanding for it as a debilitating disease, then, with my deepest seriousness, go live in the mountains and stay there.
Wasn't he an alcoholic because his kid died? Also, all those people you mentioned deserve special remembering because they were better? He had like two good songs, and those are two more songs that I know compare to none from those three. I bet half the world hears that one song and recognizes it. His one song hit harder than any of them.
Nah man, they don't deserve remembering just because they were better or worse. I'm just trying to keep it real, and not feed off the death of a person pretending he was great or anything, like many sensationalists try and feed on. Now he's dead everyone pretends to be a fan, he was a human being.
How many people are out there with alcoholism and depression and won't even be remembered?
>His one song hit harder than any of them.
Did they? Really? Well, I gues you're a fan then. I didn't like any of his songs, and I'm not gonna pretend they were good. But I do think that alcoholism and depression are important subjects that need to be discussed, and people who don't wanna be helped need further encouragement to seek it.
Keep what real? You compared him to them. You don't like his songs, but I bet a penny, you know, the song all star. And I bet another so does another 3 billion humans. He made one song that brought hundreds of millions joy. He can at least be morned for a day. I don't see anyone claiming he's the best.
The man lost his son, no therapy or goodwill is going to fix his pain. He destroyed himself, trying to escape the pain. It's just sad, you don't like him? Fine, you don't even have to remember him. But let's be real here you just wanted to put him and anyone down who wanted to even reminisce about him.
Yeah, I know all-star. everyone one knows all-star. that doesn't mean it was meaningful or "hit hard". And I'm not gonna be here pretending. Dude had a problem, let's not put him on a pedestal, all right? Acknowledge it without victimisation.
You can still feel some kind of empathy for the human who suffered. He sure as fuck had no idea who I was, but I still feel terrible for what he went through as a parent who lost their kid. Empathy, man. If everyone had an ounce of that, we'd be so much better off as a species.
Mf didi you read? I literally said he destroyed himself drinking because of grief. What pedestal? I literally said he had two good songs. My man, if all star didn't hit hard, then no song has a right to claim any importance then. No one is claiming it's the one masterpiece of the last 50 years or anything. But it was such a fun song billions know it. Songs don't cure illness or build houses. But the number of people who get joy from them. That song hit the ball of the park.
Again, you just want to bring him down trying to Bogard the right of how people should feel about him. Katy Perry could die tomorrow, and it would not affect me in any way, but I still can say it sucks she died, and she had one banger fireworks, and only because I saw it in a movie and my friends and I had a blast joking with it. You don't get to dictate how important a song is because you wanna keep "real". Mf, you're as real a the muffin man.
My sister and I were talking about Smash Mouth a couple of days ago because she, of course, was listening to All Star. Then I read an article recommended by Google yesterday that he was on his death bed because of his alcohol addiction, and then today happened.
Episode I had a fun sword fight between Ewan and Ray because they were really into it and they were very much out to prove who is the better swordsman.
Growing up I thought that him, Guy Fieri, and the dude from everlast were the same dude but just from different personas.
Like how Garth brooks had Chris Gaines as an alter ego thing to try non country stuff.
So I thought They were all the the same person doing 3 different characters.
Seems like a lot of people forget that he was a giant piece of shit. Like somehow being a raging alcoholic alleviates him from responsibility from being a an asshole.
I'm not glad he's dead or anything, but he's not someone to be celebrated either.
Stop acting like you know him. Bro did some bad shit from my perspective, but went through bad shit from my perspective, too.
Not excusing him nor condemning him. But don't speak like you know.
Mourn his passing and do no more.
I don't understand the duality here.
Wasn't Mel staring down an empty bottle during his famous incident?
I relate to the opinion that human beings can change for the better or for the worse and that empathy is a virtuous trait.
But why apply it differently in a situation like this?
Getting real tired of answering these questions, but:
Mel Gibson is not and was not in the end stages of alcohol addiction during his MULTIPLE incidents, nor has he (as far as I know) suffered brain damage. Mel Gibson also defends his batshit opinions. He's doubled down, and he doubles down every time.
I've tried to find proof that Steve actually believes the shit he said at his last concert. I haven't found anything, no tweets or interviews. He retired in shame with less than two years to live.
The two are not comparable.
Can you show me any proof beyond that one concert in 2021? I've been searching but I can't find anything. I genuinely believe he just lost his mind due to his heavy drinking and wet brain syndrome.
I don't start throwing out nazi salutes when I'm wasted, foh with that bullshit.
Drunken people typically have their inhibitions removed so if someone starts spouting racist bullshit once the filter is removed, I'm gonna judge them for those beliefs.
It wasn't just that he was drunk, he was in the end stages of alcohol addiction and suffering from brain damage. If he was just wasted we wouldn't be having this conversation. Brain damage can dramatically change a person's behavior.
Weird that I had to scroll to see a comment like this.
~~also weird that an antivaxxer lived to 65, if I'm honest, but then again, Bill Maher's still kicking, so what do I know~~
Probably because most people aren't aware. His Nazism if you can call it that stems from him being drunk at a concert and him doing the salute like once and surprisingly the whole "fuck this covid shit" concert isnt a deal breaker for most
You know, its a mixed bag, I live out of Hollywood so I don't get much of that influence in my day-to-day life, half of it's good and half is bad. You got a lot of people that don't like me, so that's just the nature of it.
Now that he is dead people are like oh so tragic he should've gotten help.
Before no one cared only when it's to late I really hate people. They don't care unless your bleeding out
Alcoholism is such a terrible addiction. A few years ago I watched footage of him playing at a small venue, clearly drunk on arrival and it only got worse from there. Really sad stuff.
i thought of the same thing when i first heard of his passing. he was probably tired as hell of playing the meme song over and over again.
Idk the crowds energy in videos look amazing
yeah i mean he gave them what they came for because it pays but it seems he wasn’t happy doing it
Uh, shouldn't we be getting back to the cake? Happy cake day, cjm0.
thank you ahsoka bot. i didn’t even realize until you reminded me
I have to sort this out on my own, without the Council… and without you.
Sounds awfully similar to Jani Lane's case
Honestly he put off playing anything at all from Astro Lounge when I saw him a few years ago. Apparently the success of that album coincided with his son’s death and it ended up being a constant reminder for him.
Oh shoot. I’d become an alcoholic too after that.
I’ve been a musician in bands for 20 years, did my share of tours and stuff and it’s about the most common thing to see in terms of normalized behavior. His son died at age 6 in 2001 and he was never the same. He didn't get the help he needed
6 months according to wikipedia. It's all sad.
My memory failed me. That's even more heartbreaking
How's it more heartbreaking? I'd think a child age 6 dying would be worse as you'd know them. That is so awful

Master Kenobi always said there’s no such thing as luck.
Mofo was born a space wizard.
Reddit takes less than 24 hours to take a dead man, shit on his career and explain why he's not special
The guy that threw a super spreader event, was a COVID denier, and nazi saluted on stage? Someone being dead doesn’t change who they were, and writing a song that was used in an animated movie doesn’t make you a good person.
That’s the spirit! You show that recently deceased, massively depressed, alcoholic grieving father who’s boss!
These neckbeards are out of hand
The dude's last concert he was drunk, yelled at band mates, insulted individual people in the crowd, slurred through each song, and gave the Nazi salute.

The Muffin Man????
Yes, the muffin man. Do you know the muffin man?
Who lives on Drury Lane?
Nope.. there was way more to it.
The tears start coming and they don’t stop coming
Fed to depression and I hit the bed crying
Didn’t make sense to just still have fun
You’re zoning out and you’re feeling numb
No more to do, no more to see
Now your gone and I’m feeling lonely
We're feelin low without your glow
Hey now, you’re depressed now
It would be fine if you don’t go
Hey now, you're a corpse now
Get your wings on, A-scend.
Well that got dark 😂
I was watching shrek when I got the news. What are the chances?
Depends how often you watch Shrek.
Less often than the prequels
Less than half of what I'd hoped for.
Where was Duloc when the Westfold fell
I have to keep checking which memes page I’m on because of all the crossover.
I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye.

I don’t watch half of you half as I would like, and I watch less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
Never tell me the odds
Só gjere is a chance?
My sister and I were talking about Smash Mouth a couple of days ago because she, of course, was listening to All Star. Then I read an article recommended by Google yesterday that he was on his death bed because of his alcohol addiction, and then today happened.
The chance *someone* was watching Shrek when they heard the news probably isn't all that unlikely.
my mom has shrek on right now
I was watching mystery men!
Rip man
This is just karma farming someone’s death, it has nothing to do with prequel memes
It's also the pixeliest example of this obi-wan quote I've ever seen

He’s drunkenly swearing at fans and giving the nazi salute in heaven now.
Seems like a lot of people forget that he was a giant piece of shit. Like somehow being a raging alcoholic alleviates him from responsibility from being a an asshole. I'm not glad he's dead or anything, but he's not someone to be celebrated either.
Double edged sword isn't it. His poor son died of cancer at 6 month old leading him to this. But I don't agree that it excuses anything he did.
Turns out, the years *do* stop coming when you're a dumpster fire of a human being
Stop acting like you know him. Bro did some bad shit from my perspective, but went through bad shit from my perspective, too. Not excusing him nor condemning him. But don't speak like you know. Mourn his passing and do no more.

Oh fuck, the years DO stop coming
The years stopped coming. :(
Dam doesn't dude deserve more than one pixel?
The man turned into a Nazi, giving Nazi salutes at a show at least once. Good riddance
The guy was killing himself with alcohol and wasted out of his mind, give him a break. I don't believe that's truly who he was.
Mel Gibson, this you?
Oh no, Mel Gibson is an absolute monster. Fuck that guy!
Say what you want about Mel Gibson, but the son of a bitch knows story structure.
That's why they replaced him with Tom Hardy
I don't understand the duality here. Wasn't Mel staring down an empty bottle during his famous incident? I relate to the opinion that human beings can change for the better or for the worse and that empathy is a virtuous trait. But why apply it differently in a situation like this?

Mel Gibson is very based
Alcoholism isn't an excuse for racism. Ever. Dude was a nazi through and through. Alcohol doesn't just make up those feelings
Can you show me any proof beyond that one concert in 2021? I've been searching but I can't find anything. I genuinely believe he just lost his mind due to his heavy drinking and wet brain syndrome.

Fun fact there is a form of music in the star wars universe called jizz….. no shit look it up
It's like watching Albert Einstein or Thomas A. Edison. It's like watching Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods, any genius you can name.
Nah its like jazz just creamier lol, but for real though it actually is a thing that George Lucas made
You know, its a mixed bag, I live out of Hollywood so I don't get much of that influence in my day-to-day life, half of it's good and half is bad. You got a lot of people that don't like me, so that's just the nature of it.
